Storage capacity - extension? future?

I'd like to buy iPhone, but the currently available capacity of 8GB is definitely not enough to transfer my mp3 library into the iPhone, so I stil can't use it as my primary mp3 player.
Is the storage capacity extendable?
Will there be any iPhone with higher capacity (>100 GB) in soon future?

The current shipping iPhone isn't extendable/expandable.
The kind of storage capacity you're looking for (100GB+) would require the iPhone to drastically change in size. Forget about the costs and all that, it's a matter of the technology used to store that kind of data. Instead of using incredibly small 'microdrive' devices, 1.8in or even 2.5in drives would be required.
Never say never. In a few years, I wouldn't be surprised if drives capable of storing more than a hundred gigs were even smaller than what Apple's using to store 8GB. Technology tends to work that way.
If you're looking for a way to get into an iPhone and work with your music, think different. First thing to point out is that the iPhone doesn't work as a file dumping ground (you don't just copy a file to the phone). It synchronizes with your computer. So basically the computer has to have the file on it. Even if a 200GB iPhone was out there that could function as your primary player... the computer has to also hold your entire MP3 collection.
So, regardless of what you use to listen to tunes, your computer is essentially your main MP3 repository. From that point, the way the iPhone works is to sync with various iTunes playlists. So long as you're able to access your computer from time to time to sync the phone, you can pretty easily change out the music on your phone.
I have over 100GB in my big library too.. but honestly speaking, it's hardly essential. ****, it's more than a month's worth of music. I sync my phone a couple times a week, there's no way I could even play 100GB worth of music between syncs even if it was playing 24/7.
Since I got my iPhone in October, I've been managing the music on the phone really easily, by changing out which playlist I'm syncing to. I'm not a huge playlist nut, but I have about a dozen or so. Check the box on the iPhone sync screen, and it puts it on the phone. Uncheck, and it's gone (though still on the computer, since that's my main repository). So long as you use playlists on your iTunes (even a little bit), you should be able to get a ton of use out of an iPhone that has 8GB memory (mine's been fine, and right now nearly 50% of the space in my phone is video).
I hope that info helps!

  • Best storage capacity for a student

    Greetings everyone,
I have the desire of buying the latest iPad in a near future and I was wondering, what storage capacity will I be needing?
-I intend to record many classes at university
-I intend to take pictures of the boards at university
-I intend to use it to store documents, books, dictionaries.
-I might get a good lot of apps and a few games(but not much)
-I do not listen to a lot of music(100 tracks max, really)
-I would like to have a few movies at hands(I also am subscribed to Netflix)
Wich would be the best for me? 16, 32, 64 or 128G?
Meanwhile, I'd appreciate if someone could give me a hint of how much space recording parts of my classes might take.
    +
If someone was kind enough to explain to me ''***'' is 3G and Cellular?I have no idea what it could be.
    Much appreciated,
    Agesilas

I'm happy that Demo solved your question. I had read it and waited until my younger son got home to ask him a few questions. I figure the more opinions you have, the better. And Demo has the right idea that you should buy your ipad with the most storage you can afford. That tends to be the general concensus in responses to this question.
Our son got his ipad 2 64 gb before as he started his junior year in college this past year. At first, he quickly loaded it with music, a few movies, tv shows, apps, etc. It came to over 22 gbs. After his junior year he has used over 50 gb. He said the books do not take up much space, but the tv shows do and if he needs to, he can delete them. So it can add up fast. You want to record (video and audio?) it adds up. It will add up more quickly than simply taking photos. You might have to buy newspapers (or be given for free through your university) and they add up if not deleted periodically. Engineering projects take up space. Others might say you don't need to go too big because you can store things in the cloud. (We haven't done that here, so no opinion to offer.)
Like Demo, our son has no idea about recording, but as Demo said,it will add up. Movies eat up the battery more quickly, so that might be an indication that your recordings will take up more space.
So we suggest you consider the 64gb, and if you can easily afford it, and want to, consider the128 gb. (Personally, for me, the more it costs, the more I'd worry about it.)
And FYI, at least in the USA, most colleges have wifi throughout campus, so you might not need it too often on campus. But if you can afford it, the cellular will ensure constant connectivity to the internet anywhere! And because you aren't too familiar with cellular, depending on where you live and go to school, you will pick a carrier (often the carrier for your cell phone.) And when you are out of wifi range, your phone carrier will charge you, so you might want to do some comparison shopping.
It's great that you have Netflix.
Oh. Please be sure to buy a good strong case for your ipad.
Reseach independent reviews (esp. re storgage given the price,) and don't hurry to make a decision until you're sure.
Whatever you decide, enjoy your ipad and your years at university!

  • Deleting files on time machine - why doesn't the storage capacity refresh??

    Quick question,
After I permanently delete a file off time machine (something that has storage mass ~3 G), I am not seeing the storage capacity of the time capsule refresh with a higher number. In other words, before the file was deleted from all backups, the time capsule disk read 399 G available. After I permanently deleted the backups for this 3 G file, the available storage capacity was still 399 G. I checked to make sure the file was deleted from the back-up volumes and it was. Do I have to wait sometime before the time capsule updates the available storage capacity. Just curious.

remote TM backups are stored inside sparse bundles. if you open your TC in finder you'll see it. when you delete something from a sparse bundle it doesn't automatically compact and recover the free space. TM will use it up again in future backups. you can also manually compact the sparse bundle from terminal if you really want to.
    the terminal command is
    sudo hdiutil compact /path/to/sparsebundle
you have to put the correct unix path to the sparse bundle in the command and enter your admin password when prompted for it.

  • Consumption of storage capacity in in SNP capacity view

    Hi Experts,
when I check a storage resource in the capacity view the key figure "Capacity Consumption" (9ACACON) is displayed.
Could anybody please explain how is this key figure calculated?
This does not take place in a macro - I think this is related to the assigned key figure function done in the planning area customizing. The key figure "quantity stored" (9ASTOCK) has the key figure function "6007 Storage Quantity with Resource Consumption". Therefore the amount stored in this key figure (and other key figures with the function 6007 assigned) consumes the capacity.
I want to check capacity consumption of the projected stock in the future which is only calculated in auxiliary key figure u201CStock on Hand (Projected)u201D. This key figure has also function 6007 assigned.
    So I assume that
    a) the calculation of capacity consumption takes place by the key figure function - How specifically?
    b) if I create a new (non auxiliary) key figure where the projected stock is stored in the consumption is correctly calculated?
    Looking forward to your answers!
    Julian

    Hi julian,
let me rephrase what I said above:
When I say:"the capacity consumption for storage capacity is not based on projected stock but on the orders": I mean:
The capacitiy consumption calculation is not based on the proejcted stock key figure.Instead the storage quantity is calculated based on initial stock, receipt AND demand.
This should give the same result, but what I meant is: I don't think that the changes you have done for the projected stock have any impact on the storage capacity consumption.
In you case it looks like the result is based only on receipt as you mentioned, but to be honest even that look wrong (something arriving on day x should consume the storage untill it is removed and send somewhere else, and not only on the date of arrival)
Note the standard data view 9ASNP94/SNP94(2) - the capacity view- does NOT contain the projected stock key figure.
What you want to see is correct: in standard it should work! (except that it is not based on the projected stock key figure itself, but it is recaculated...)
Did you check if the standard view 9ASNP94/SNP94(2) was showing the right result?
I asked you:" How your system behave with other order types (e.g ditribution demand, production...) "
I meant: when you have a distribution demand, is your capacity consumption reduced?
    Thanks and Regards
    Julien

    1. I have an iPod which has purchases synced with I tunes with an apple ID. I now have an iPad with a new ID for cloud. I have cloud storage capacity of 5gb which came with the iPad. How can I use one ID and store my existing music in cloud?

    HI Frostyfrog
CHeck out iTunes Match which has an annual fee of £21 or thereabouts. You can store a maximum of 25,000 songs there and they all become available on your other kit, iPhone, iPad and iPod. I know it works as I have over 23000 songs uploaded of which only a few we're bought through iTunes.
it works by comparing your music to the whole iTunes music dadata base so you access the same tunes that you could get from iTunes. If you have obscure stuff, it uploads your own music to the cloud as a copy.
I Find it incredible that on my iPhone with its 16gb memory I can view almost 200 gb of music (ie my 23000 songs) and play any of them. Anything I add to iTunes becomes available via the cloud fairly quickly from a few minutes or a little longer if adding a lot.
The first time you use it it will take quite a while to match your music if you have a lot, but after that it is all automatic. Read the stuff on the apple site. Your PC needs to be at least running Vista. I recommend it and at less than 50p a week it's good value.
    Good luck

It seems to take up to a couple of days for the upgrade to take hold, at least that's the experience of some users.  Give it 24 hours before contacting apple.

  • Can I use HP System Recovery Disks on a new hard drive replacement with a lower storage capacity?

Can I use the HP System Recovery Disks from my HP Pavilion dv7t-4000 CTO Select Edition Entertaimnent Notebook PC when I replace the failing hard drive with a smaller storage capacity hard drive?  Right now it is a Toshiba 750GB SATA hard disk drive, 5400 RPM, 2.5 inch small form factor (SFF) and I am planning to replace it with the Toshiba HDKCB26 500GB 2.5 inch Hybrid Hard Drive.  I read that I cannot use a System Image to restore the hard drive because it is a smaller capacity then the original Hard Drive. If this is true, it seems that my only option is to use the HP Recovery Disks.

    Hi:
Normally the HP recovery disks don't work on a smaller hard drive either, but it may be possible in your case if HP offered a 500 GB HDD in that model series.
    No guarantees though.

  • SQL Server 2008 Express R2 exceeds the storage capacity of Oracle XE

Hello, here is a novelty: SQL Server 2008 Express R2 exceeds the storage capacity of Oracle XE, XE you still limited to 4GB of data from, the competition gets better and offers a bit more, XE remains the same, hopefully Oracle 11g XE exceeds storage and memory to SQL Server.

Yes, I do good work is correct, I have not thought to migrate from Oracle XE to SQL Server Express because it could not work with the flexibility of PL / SQL and other Oracle features own, however, SQL Server 2008 R2 Express if takes the lead XE in storage, at which Oracle Corp. will match or exceed, offer more storage in response to competition and not only compensate for the limitation of 4GB with Excellency good features.

  • Ipod Touch showing incorrect storage capacity

I have an Ipod Touch 64 GB 5th Gen running iOS 8.2. I'm not certain when this issue occurred initially from the devices perspective - only when I first noticed it. The device was running 8.1.1.3 at the time. I was working with it in Itunes and clicked on the iPods summary screen to check for the iOS 8.2 update. I noticed the capacity of the device was showing as 56.62 GB. Available space was 43.19. The little memory symbol for the Ipod shows 64 GB. I was troubled by the capacity message. No help there. I ran the Update to iOS 8.2. Succesful. Still same capacity. Checked the iPod's Gerneral/About screen - Capacity listed 56.6 GB.
Have I lost access to 8 GB of capacity here? Should I reset the thing?

Total of Audio, Video and App Data is 14.12 GB.  Available shows 43.19 GB. That adds up to 57.31.GB. So there is a 700 K discrepancy. Total Photo Data happens to be 700 K. Just saying.

You only have 56.6 GB available to you. The difference between that and the 64 GB advertised capacity is taken up by:
The operating system since you can't use that for storage
and how GB is advertised and used/reported by the operating system. See:
How OS X and iOS report storage capacity - Apple Support
The update did not change anything except likely reducing the capacity by 10 or so MB since update typically add things and thus takes more storage for the operating system

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
First check that your device is correctly connected to the wifi/internet (settings > wifi)
If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.
If this doesn't help, try turning off some items for back up in a pattern to try to establish if your problem is being caused by specific data on your device.
Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

  • Does the 7th generation ipod nano have the same storage capacity as the 4th generation ipod nano

Just bought a ipod nano 7th generation to replace my 16gb 4th generation nano as its battery life is getting shorter
Went to load my library on to my new ipod and it could not take all the songs, wheras my 4th generarion had room to spare
so i have had to uncheck a lot of songs to get my new ipod to accept loading
my guess would be around 300 mb
Is this difference right when they are both rated as 16gb and showing on itunes at keast the same storage capacity?

Need to add I have restored the ipod twice with no change to storage capacity
    'others' is showing
    4th gen    119 mb
    7th gen 136 mb

  • On iPad 2 can files be compressed on HD to increase storage capacity?

I bought my daughter an iPad 2 3rd generation.  I know the HD capacity is 16 Gb and iOS 7.01 takes up about
1 Gb of het capacity, giving her about 15 Gb to use for apps and data storage. I have three questions about that.
Q1.  Can She use a flash drive to download apps and files to the flash drive, then access the flash drive as an
external data storage to view/listen to photos, video and music and; most important; can she download apps
and run them from the drive on the system itself if she does so?
Q2.  Can she compress the files on the HD to increase the storage capacity of the HD, and still have the ability
run the downloaded apps, view videos, etc.  Can she still access the compressed files, if she can do so?
Q3.  iPad 2 has no paper guide or owner's manual, but. Apple has an ipad Guide (140pp) that can be down-
loaded and viewed. Can she download iPad User/Owners "Guide for iPad Using OS 7.01 ondto her iPad and
put an icon for it on her iPad desktop for easy reference?
    Thank you for your help.

Q1. There are compatible flashdrives tha allwo you to do this through their own Apps such as the Sandisk Wireless Flash Drive among others.   http://www.sandisk.com/products/wireless/flash-drive/  It cannot eb done with regular flash drives though.
Q2.  No. No compression is available on the iPad.
Q3. She can bookmark the iPad's manual website and place an icon on the home screen for the url, or download the Book version to iBooks for free.
Just tap on Arrow coming out of a box icionin Safari, and then tap on Place on Home Screen.
