Storing Documents on the File System

Can anyone tell me how to store the documents on the files system?
Probably, I need some kind of pointer records on the SharePoint content DB that point to the document locations on that file system.
I need the detailed info on how to implement this approach to reduce the size of the contentDB on SQL.
The goal is to reduce the size of the content DB and we know the option of splitting it into the multiple site collections/content DBs but wanted to know the different options.

if you're storing the files on the SQL servers' file system, you're not reducing the disk capacity requirements, just moving them from the MDF's to standalone files.
Additionally, backups become more complicated since you need to grab not just the database, but the files.
what you're talking about is remote blob storage. There are also lots of settings that control when RBS is used and when it is not, which, combined with SP2013's file sharding, can be confusing to configure for the results you desire.
Given what you've stated, I would strongly recommend looking at alternatives.

  • Disappointed - Where did the file system go ?

Am I just missing the obvious ? My old HTC TouchPro 2 had an accessible and complete Windows 6.5 file system - Documents, Music, etc. Has that file system access been disabled on these Tropy's ? I have PDF fioles (maps, etc) and other files from the old phone that I want to use. Am I going to reactivate my TouchPro 2 - or is there a way to get to the file system on the Trophys ? Looks like Verizon needs to get more serious about Windows power users (read: BUSINESS clients) - TouchPro's were good but there is no meaningful replacement. Any advice ?

There is no file system. One way you can get PDFs from the old phone to the new phone is to send the PDFs by email to yourself again. Another way is you could access your SkyDrive (skydrive.live.com) and upload the PDF's there (you'd then go into the Office app and move to the 'locations' pivot. In either case, once you open the file in the Adobe Reader app, the PDFs will be stored on the phone until you delete the file yourself. I don't know what other file types you're trying to access, but I have yet to find a file type that won't open (Excel, Powerpoint, Word, TXT files work, MP3, WMA should work, ZIP files will redirect to Internet Explorer but they will be opened).
As far as Windows power users, that wouldn't be on Verizon, that would be Microsoft, and probably chances are it won't change.

  • Crystal Report failed scheduling onto the File System

    Hi,
We have set up a Crystal report file for scheduling via file system. This report has been running fine with regards to generation all through last few months, but has started failing to generate the report at the scheduled time onto the file system from the last few days. When I checked the logs of the Instance Manager, it shows an error like this 'Unable to connect: incorrect log on parameters. Details: [Database Vendor Code: 1017 ]'.
Please note, I was able to run the report from InfoView without any issue, so I don't believe there is any issue with stored procedure/report/database connection but something else.
Can someone please provide some insights on this.
    Thanks.

    Hello Satish,
Is this issue specific to FileSystem location? What about default enterprise location?
When you view the reprt in InfoView, click on Refresh button to get current data. If the repot was published with Saved Data option, then you would see data in the report but it would be old one.
Above step would confirm that there is no issues with database user credentials specified with the report.
Also, open the report in Crystal Reports 2011, refresh it and publish without saved data in BI 4 repository and schedule it.
    Regards,
    Mahesh

  • An internal error occurred while writing imported graphics in this document. The file has been saved

An internal error occurred while writing imported graphics in this document. The file has been saved, but has lost some image data. Please report this error to Adobe Technical Support.
How do i fix this, there are no images in the document
    thanks
    emma

We are running FM version 7.2b144 on MS Win xp Pro (32 bit), and I did not notice this until service pack 3 was installed. I believe I have found a work around to the situation and another contributing cause. If graphic files are placed directly in an anchored frame instead of importing by reference, the file somehow becomes misplaced. If you right click the graphic and open the Object Properties dialog box, and see the phrase "no referenced file" below Main Editor: Referenced File: in the lower left hand corner, this has happened. I found if I removed all graphics files without references and imported them by reference, the source file may then be properly saved. I am also using a program called CCleaner, which removes cookies, temp files, browsing history and the like from a system. If the program settings are chosen too aggressively, and the application runs when FM has a file open, this same error will occur, even if all files are referenced properly. I don't know if SP3 has some similar application which is now running in the background and causing this.
To summarize, if you want to retain SP3, I have eliminated this error by confirming the links to referenced graphics files and avoiding using 3rd party "cleaners" while FM is open.

  • IPhoto9: "library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported."

Can please anyone help me with this issue.
After upgrading from iPhoto8 to iPhoto9 my library won't open anymore. I have stored all my pictures on a NAS (Buffalo Link Station Duo). It all worked fine but since upgrading to iPhoto9 I do have the following problem:
When opening iPhoto I receive a message that the library needs to be updated. I assume that iPhoto should just do this sort of automatically in order to upgrade to iPhoto9.However, next message I receive then is
"The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported."
Apple support so far does not seem to be able to solve my issue. Anyone else having had the same issue and having a solution to this?
Thanks a lot for your help.

    There is no solution.
IPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos. While you have been lucky to date, many folks with a library on a NAS found that it worked for a while and then the problems started.
Workaround: Put the Library on a Disk Image formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and store that on the NAS. But the real solution is to use a properly formatted disk for the Library.

  • Adobe pdf problem; the message comes up:- There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired.

    Dear all
I have got  3 mac computers. 2011 13 inch air, 27 inch mac and 2010 pro. latest softwares. all of them have a problem in opening pdf files;esp older files. the error message comes up 'There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired.'
I have reinstalled reader, checked software updates etc.
    Any help will be appreciated

It isn't likely to be a problem with the software. You have two different applications which have no interaction between them, neither of which can open the same group of files on three different systems. It's possible that one application has a problem, but not both or that one system has a problem, but not all three. Typically if there were software corruption, it would not show as a failure to open a specific type of file, but in opening and running the application itself.
I realise that that doesn't really help you since it doesn't resolve the poblem, but I think you need to start with a known-good pdf, preferably one you can download from an internet source, and see whether that opens. If it does, then it would confirm that the software is working properly.
For a known-good PDF to download, try one of the manuals from the support site here.

    @shl1024 ,
Hello and thank you for posting back with the screen shot.
Now if you can boot into your system and get to the desktop.  Back up all your files you do not want to loose.
Once this is done.  You will want to enter the system BIOS. You should be able to access the BIOS by tapping the F10 key as soon as you see the HP welcome screen. Once you are in the BIOS you will want to run a hard drive test.
Testing a Hard Disk from the BIOS
You will want to do this to make sure the hard drive is still in good shape.  If it comes up with a bunch of issues in this test.  Replace.
If not run other hard drive tests.
HP Notebook PCs - Testing a Hard Disk using the Built in Self Test
Now if this finds issues then if you have everything backed up you may be able to run the Windows system recovery to put it back to the way it was out of the box.
You may just ran into an issue with corrupted data in the system file and the system is unable to read.

  • What's so hard about the file system?

I've heard that the file system is hard to understand/navigate recently. I heard Jobs mention it yesterday in the keynote.
I just don't get it. Since OS X they've made a home folder. That's pretty simple. Is this a case of catering to people
who are very new to computers?
I made a folder called Art. In it are all my works in folders with appropriate names. When I save a file from Illustrator
and put it in the art folder the next time I save it goes in that same folder unless I change the path. That's pretty
    straight forward, no?
    Thanks for any insights.

    > Is this a case of catering to people who are very new to computers?
My guess is yes.  Apple has been getting a lot of new Mac users via the iPhone, iPad, iPod, and iPod Touch devices which do not expose the file system to the user.
It is my guess that based on support calls, they figured if they minimize the need to understand and navigate the file system, they will have happier customers, where that is an over all average and not necessarily specific cases of experienced users.
One area where new users get confused is where should I put something?  There are different existing folders, but they can create their own.  Should they use an existing folder, or create their own.  Documents sometimes becomes a dumping ground until it becomes difficult to find things.  Should the user create a new home level folders or subfolders in Documents?
There are 3 Library folders (assuming you know where to look), what goes where.  home folder -> Library is not used consistently by all applications which can confuse users that figure out how to find something for application X, only to have application Y store it differently.
Besides you cannot argue with the success of the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, and Apple does look at its bottom line and everything there is telling them "Less is More".

  • Where exactly the KM folders resides on the file system .??

Please also answer the given questions???
Does the userhome folder in the KM also exists on the file system on the portal server. If yes, whats the navigation for the same.
Where does the favorites specific to a user in the userhome resides on the file system?
Where exactly the KM folder resides on the file system?

The only part of the repository you will find in the filesystem (as a default) would be the /etc repository.  Its specific location depends on your implementation - it could be a local directory or on a share somewhere.
The only other parts of the KM subsystem you would find in the filesystem would be any custom repositories you had defined as FSDB or similar.  Otherwise as reported everything else is stored in the DB.

  • Strategy and Process on how to best enqueue from the file system

I have a single database that must accept BFILES from one location via a directory folder, http text documents via proxy server, and unstructured XMLTYPE CLOB from another database.
I have created an ANYDATA queue, and will try to transform the dequeued output to XMLTYPE payloads for a pl/sql callback.
My problem is how to monitor both the file system BFILE folder, and the XMLTYPE CLOBS, to automatically begin then enqueue process. The queue would have to accept from (1) to anynumber of files, and given that requirement the use of an array batch is what I would like to use, but need to populate the array.
Any help would be most appreciated.
    David

Thank you for the quick reply.
    The database version is 10.2.0.3.
There are three sources of documents coming into the system.
Source 1: Outside entity (in-front of a secure firewall) who must place their XML (XSD compliant) files on a shared file system server (the BFILES).
Source 2: Internal entity (behind firewall) who publishes their XML files to a defined database directory on the database server.
Source 3: Enterprise Intranet contributors submitting their individual files via url.
On entry for each file they must be validated for XSD compliance then if passed submitted to the main enqueue for propagation to 5 additional process queues with separate callback procedures.
If reasonably possible, separate agents of some sort would "listen" at each folder location, then begin the enqueue process when either a batch of files or a single file is placed in the directory folder.
AQ itself has no such mechanism to monitor locations, and a scheduled job makes sense - however the job would have to continuously run given the very short processing requirement. However, using DBMS_SCHEDULER may be the best solution given ALL rhe requirements.
Thank you for your professionalism - I appreciate the assistance.

  • When I attempt to open a PDF file I saved from a website, I get the message "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired." Is there any way to correct this problem?

When I attempt to open a PDF file I saved from a website using Safari, I get the message "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired." When I save the same PDF file using FireFox it opens up immediately. Is there any way to correct this problem with Safari?

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Crystal Reports XI String [255] limit with the File System Data driver...

I was trying to create a Crystal Reports XI report to return security permissions of files and folders.  I have been able to successfully connect and return data using the File System Data driver as the Data Source; however the String limit on the ACL NT Security Field is 255 characters.  The full string of data to be returned can be much longer than the 255 limit and I cannot find how to manipulate that parameter.
I am currently on Crystals XI and Crystal XI R2 and have applied the latest service packs but still see the issue.  My Crystal Reports Database DLL for File System data ( crdb_FileSystem.dll ) is at Product Version 11.5.10.1263.
Is it possible to change string limits when using the File System Data driver as the Data Source?  If so, how can that be accomplished.  If not, is there another method to retrieve information with the Windows File System Data being the Data Source?  Meaning, could I reach my end game objective of reporting on the Windows ACL's with Crystal through another method?

    Hello,
This is a known issue. Early versions you could not create folder structures longer than 255 characters. With the updates to the various OS's this is now possible but CR did not allocate the same space required.
It's been tracked as an enhancement - ADAPT01174519 but set for a future release.
There are likely other ways of getting the info and then putting it into an Excel file format and using that as the data source.
I did a Google search and found this option: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/16772-45-display-explorer-folders-tree-structure-export-excel
There are tools out there to do this kind of thing....
    Thank you
