Strange bug - flashing transparent rectangles

Hello - I've just upgraded to a 2.4 ghz imac, 2gb RAM, Radeon HD 2400 graphics card, OSX 10.5.6. I've been trialling Photoshop CS4 and occasionally notice a random bug - (I haven't been able to identify what sets it off - sometimes just making a layer invisible then visible, or selecting an area with the lasoo) - transparent (ie. grey/white chequered) rectangles start appearing as the screen redraws, and parts of the image start blurring and shimmering. I quit, restart, and all is fine again for a few hours, and then it starts again?! The files I'm working on are by no means massive - 35MB . Any idea if it is a RAM or graphics card or Adobe or Mac or ? issue?! I'm also using an old Wacom with current driver - I haven't experienced this problem in any other program, though. Many thanks!

The last external harddisk I bought privately was an IOMEGA 750 GB with all the alternatives for ports on it. I am very happy with it. That one is partitioned into 2 halves, one housing my Mac Book backup, the other housing my iMac backup. The original plan for that disk was not for backup, but for working (and I used it until recently for startup disk for various betas I didn't want to mix with my regular stuff)and for scratch.
But along came the Mac Book alu (2,4 GHz) at work which replaced my black MacBook (2,16 GHz). Not my choice, but that was what we got (I would have preferred the new Mac Book Pro alu WITH FW). (We are also going to combine those with iPhones instead of regular SonyEricsson mobiles and regular phones before March - around 700 iPhones we are talking about - we are becoming entirely mobile, except for the editors which will get iMac 24" instead of the present old G5s).
We (the Helpdesk of Scandinavias largest daily newspaper) are trying out the MacBook alus before we swop all the current MacBook and MacBook Pro users to them (several hundred users)during the coming spring (when we also switch to Leopard and CS3-CS4, CS3 for the editors (because of plug-in development for the publishing systems we use), CS4 for the photographers probably as they got brand new very advanced CANON cameras recently).
So now my external harddisk for scratches is a meager 160GB LaCie with firewire only (which also houses one backup of my photos in addition to dvds) which I cannto use at all with my Mac Book Alu.
Without the IOMEGA with all the ports on it I would not have been able to migrate my MacBook to the new Mac Book Alu as easily and fast as I did. My collegues struggled with it over the network by wireless hub and Airport for whole days.
Conclusion: if you can find one with both USB2 and firewire all the better for the future. That's what I am looking for personally. But I only see usb 2 ones in all the stores (unless I go to Apple store and pay a lot more than in a regular electronics store like MediaMarkt). The Swedish Apple Store has a IOMEGA 1TB Minimax with both firewire and usb that looks interesting. Reading specs though tells me that USB 2.0 is faster than the firewire 400 in it. FW 800 is not present on all machines. I guess a Western Digital 1TB My Book Studio Edition with both fw400 and 800 and usb 2.0 gives you more for the money. Or a Iomega UltraMax Desktop Hard Drive 750GB And in the long run is a better investment regardless of which machines it will be connected to in the future.

  • Cannot draw a transparent rectangle in Flash CS4

    Hi,
    In Flash CS4, when I draw a rectangle (or circle, or anything) with a color that has 0 alpha, nothing is drawn. Also, if I select a piece of drawing and change the color to 0 alpha, the drawing (e.g. rectangle) disappears!!
    Is there any way to disable this astonishingly stupid behaviour?
    I know I can draw a non-transparent rectangle, convert it to movie clip and set the movie clip's alpha to 0, but I'd like to avoid this.

    No it isn't a feature. It is definitely a bug. I experienced this once before. I had the part where if I selected something that already existed and changed its fill to alpha 0 then it just disappeared. And I too thought it was somebody had made a really bad programming choice when writing CS4.
    But then it went away. I've never figured out what caused it or why. I think at the time my response was just to set the alpha low (1%) with a thought like, "Well, that is hella annoying, I don't have time to deal with it now I'll come back and figure it out later." And then it just got better on its own.
    Sorry I don't have anything specific other than to tell you that you aren't alone and you aren't imagining it!
    You have updated to 10.0.2? I can't remember if it happened to me before the update or not. Are you on a Mac or PC? I also can't remember if this happened to me at work or home, so I don't know which one I saw it on. BTW I just tried it on my Mac and I can draw and/or change a shape to fill alpha zero.

  • Urgent - strange black flash on my website

    Hello all
    This is somewhat an urgent matter, the website just got published and this bug appear. Open FIREFOX and go to my webpage at www.episodesoft.com and just move the cursor in and out of the button menu. do it a couple of time.
    You should get a full screen black flash of light each time.. Anyone know why ?
    The transparency of the flash ( menu) is correct for both firefox and IE.. i don't understand.
    The website work perfectly with IE, and Chrome. It is only a FF problems
    Please feel free to look at the source.
    I'll keep looking for the problems

    Hi Hans
    Thanks for the answer! but I fail to see how this help me in the current situation.
    I've managed to narrow the probleme to the flash itself by doing a small but usefull test.... After having disabled everything but the part require for the flash to work ( and the script to show/hide it ) i've added an image just above the flash itself. I've put that image in the same cell of the same tabloid of the same Div, so the image is just before the flash. I try to run in firefox and i discovered that the image will appear the right way, and that the flash ( below the picture ) will make his strange white ( now it is white ? ? ! ) flash before appearing. however that strange white flash didn't touch the image itself.. So something in the flash code must be wrong.

    What is wrong with my code here please ? i don't understand,
    As for the FLA/SWF itself, the background inside the flash is white and since you cannot remove the background in flash, i had to do it in Html here with the Embed.
    i can't find my mistake.

  • Why is Flash's Rectangle.intersection() slow?

    For some reason I can't fathom, I have long been able to get faster intersection tests for my own version of the Rectangle object. This is silly. Why should my code be any faster than the Flash player team's code - who have had 10 iterations of the Flash player to get it right?
    example:
    package {
         import flash.display.Sprite;
         import flash.events.Event;
         import flash.geom.Rectangle;
         import flash.utils.getTimer;
          * @author Aaron Steed, robotacid.com
         public class Main extends Sprite {
              public function Main():void {
                   if (stage) init();
                   else addEventListener(Event.ADDED_TO_STAGE, init);
              private function init(e:Event = null):void {
                   removeEventListener(Event.ADDED_TO_STAGE, init);
                   // entry point
                   var t:int, i:int;
                   var flashRect:Rectangle = new Rectangle();
                   var myRect:Rect = new Rect();
                   t = getTimer();
                   for(i = 0; i < 1000000; i++){
                        flashRect.intersects(flashRect);
                   trace(getTimer() - t);
                   t = getTimer();
                   for(i = 0; i < 1000000; i++){
                        myRect.intersects(myRect);
                   trace(getTimer() - t);
    class Rect{
         public var x:Number;
         public var y:Number;
         public var width:Number;
         public var height:Number;
         public function Rect(x:Number = 0, y:Number = 0, width:Number = 0, height:Number = 0){
              this.x = x;
              this.y = y;
              this.width = width;
              this.height = height;
         /* Do two Rects intersect? */
         public function intersects(b:Rect):Boolean{
              return !(this.x > b.x + (b.width - 1) || this.x + (this.width - 1) < b.x || this.y > b.y + (b.height - 1) || this.y + (this.height - 1) < b.y);
    Hell, even if I write a separate method and use
    return !(this.x > b.x + (b.width - 1) || this.x + (this.width - 1) < b.x || this.y > b.y + (b.height - 1) || this.y + (this.height - 1) < b.y);
    with a flash Rectangle it's still faster than using crappy old Rectangle.intersects()
    Why?
    Is there anyone at Adobe that could fix this, as I'm a bit fed up of up of having to write my own versions of Flash's geometry objects.

    Hi, I tried running a benchmark to test the speed, and accuracy of your intersects(), and I discovered that yours is not only 2x faster on my computer, it is also more accurate/robust than Flash's Rectangle.intersects()!
    Below is my benchmarking code, just copy into the first frame of a new Flash document and run.
    I have no idea why your suggestion (http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/ASL-65) is marked resolved, when it is clearly not,
    but I have filed/cloned a bug report (http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-5350) regarding the issue, and also listing your version of intersects() as a workaround.
    Thanks, and cheerio XD.

  • Strange bug on skype (is this a sign that the pers...

    Hello
    I have the latest 5.9 version on my Iphone 5s
    and I couldn't help but notice a strange bug.
    When I turn on Skype,
    at first everyone is offline (just loading I guess),
    then I see some green lights appear
    at the bottom of the profile pictures of those that are online
    (normal up to this point).
    The strange bug is that in the case of one of my contacts
    whenever i turn on skype the green light appears for 3 seconds and then disappears.
    I find this strange since the green circles of other contacts that are online remain
    whereas this contact's green circle always disappears after couple of seconds,
    which leaves me wondering if this contact has blocked me.
    After I noticed this strange bug I turned skype on and off numerous times
    to see if the same thing happens everytime and indeed it does.
    I could not ask the contact directly since we are not in good terms
    and I cannot imagine this contact going offline everytime I go online.
    So why is this happening?
    Is it a sign that the contact has blocked me?

    the same thing happens to me with one of my contacts... Tried asking Skype about it but they had no useful response for me. Did you ever figure it out?

  • Strange Bug in oracle.jbo.domain.Number

    Hi
    There is a strange Bug in oracle.jbo.domain.Number. Look at the following code:
    System.out.println(new Number("12E4"));In JDeveloper 9.0.5.3 this code prints
    12000which is correct. In JDeveloper 10.1.3 this code throws an exception:
    java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input string: "E4"
         at java.lang.NumberFormatException.forInputString(NumberFormatException.java:48)
         at java.lang.Integer.parseInt(Integer.java:447)

         at oracle.sql.NUMBER.<init>(NUMBER.java:277)
         at oracle.jbo.domain.Number.<init>(Number.java:289)
         at project1.Main.main(Main.java:10)I think this is a serious bug since some very basic behaviour is not working as expected anymore.

    It's a bug.
    The parseInt method is called and from its javadoc it's clear that it throws a NumberFormatException:
    Parses the string argument as a signed decimal integer. The characters in the string must all be decimal digits, except that the first character may be an ASCII minus sign '-' ('\u002D') to indicate a negative value. The resulting integer value is returned, exactly as if the argument and the radix 10 were given as arguments to the parseInt(java.lang.String, int) method.
    Maybe the earlier implementation of oracle.jbo.domain.Number didn't use the parseInt method.

  • Very strange bug: random keyboard disposition

    Hi,
    I just experimented a very strange bug. I have Arch installed with the XFCE desktop and Firefox3b05 from unstable. I was reading my favourite austrian newspaper online: http://derstandard.at. There's the possibility to post messages under the articles, so I clicked on "Post", and suddenly, within the posting window... my keyboard disposition went crazy. Instead of "a", I had a greek omega, instead of "s", I had a euro symbol, and so on. And more: all the other apps were suddenly affected too. I opened mousepad, same story.
    I restarted X, went to the same site... and had the same experience. But after the third time, things seem to have returned to normality.
    Anybody ever experienced something similar? What could this be related to? X going crazy?

    Well, viewing the site is not the problem. You'd have to get an account and actually try posting a message on their message board. That's where the havoc begins.
    JavaScript from hell, maybe...

    Hi,
    I'm having a strange bug in my new iphone. I recently upgraded to an iphone from an older model of phone and had my contacts transferred to the new phone by the sales rep at the store. I dont know how the process worked exactly, but im guessing it has something to do with the sims cards or something like that. anyway, ive ad my phone for a day and it has been working fine up until an hour ago. suddenly, i am able to make and receive text messages from my new phone, but i can only make and receive calls from my old phone. i was told that once my service was activated with my new phone, that the old one would just have no more service. that was the case until about an hour ago. now i can text from my new phone, but can only make phone calls from the old one. anyone ever hear of this happening? please help. thanks ahead of time.

  • Import flash.geom.Rectangle could not be loaded?

    Hello everyone,
    I currently have a .fla file in folder a/. I have a .as
    called CollisionDetection file under a/com/gskinner/sprites/.
    In the .fla, I am importing the .as like this:
    import com.gskinner.sprites.CollisionDetection;
    In my .as file, I have these four lines of code in the
    beginning:
    import flash.display.BitmapData;
    import flash.geom.ColorTransform;
    import flash.geom.Matrix;
    import flash.geom.Rectangle;
    However, for each of them, it tells me that
    "The class or interface 'flash.geom.BitmapData' could not be

    Any ideas of why this is happening?

    timerClip can be referenced by code in frame 16, that
    executes after your gotoAndStop(24), but code in timerClip, even in
    its first frame, will not execute until the playhead actually
    enters frame 24. in particular, from frame 16 you cannot reference
    any functions defined on timerClip's timeline.

                    setDeleteLog("Erro ao tentar excluir o arquivo");
                    setDeleted(false);
                this.finalize();
            } catch (Exception ex) {
                setDeleteLog("Deu erro: " + ex);
            } finally {
                if (this.deleted) {
                    if (this.uploadedFiles.remove(file)) {

        }Well, when the method run the f.delete() line, sometimes, something strange hapen. With is, the file data is deleted as expected, but the file it self is not deleted. And even when i run the line this.finalize the JVM still using the file, with don't allows me to try to delete it untill my tomcat stop (with kill the application that was using the file). And this don't hapen every time that i try to delete one file.
    And worse, once it hapen every next time that i try to delete one file hapen the same bug.
    My question is...what could it be, and what can i do to solve this?!

    About this is not a possible cause. Because before i upload a file I verify if the file already exists and even after i change the file name:
    //this method change the file name and eliminate all the special characters, and also attach the current day of month,
    //month, year, minute and second to the file name
    public String generateFileName(String fileName){
            Locale l = new Locale("pt","BR");
            Calendar cal = Calendar.getInstance(TimeZone.getTimeZone(TimeZone.getTimeZone("GMT-3").getID()), l);
            int ext = fileName.lastIndexOf('.');
            String name = fileName.replace(fileName.substring(ext), "");
            String newName = RemoverAcentos.remover(name).toLowerCase()+cal.get(cal.DAY_OF_MONTH)+cal.get(cal.MONTH)
                    +cal.get(cal.YEAR)+cal.get(cal.MINUTE)+cal.get(cal.SECOND)+fileName.substring(ext);
            return newName;
        }the upload method
    String fileName = generateFileName(item.getFileName());
            try {
                File uploadFile = new File(filepath, fileName);
                if (!uploadFile.exists()) {

  • Strange bug in GO-OpenOffice 3.1 regarding file opening of long names

    I've noticed a very annoying bug regarding go-openoffice 3.1.0.99.2-1, reproduced by me multiple times. When I try to open some kind of file, regardless of what it is (could be an .ODT or .DOC), and do this by selecting it with File->Open, OpenOffice gives me an error like the one below
    As you can see although I've selected the proper file with the proper name, OO is trying to open a file with a name somewhat shortened, i.e. missing letter "T" at the end. The same file opens without any problem when I selected it in Dolphin. Now, what a strange bug! Anyone had similar experience? Any known solutions to this? It seems to happen only when the name of the file is longer than one line in the OO "opening tab" or whatever it's called.

    Don't know about vanilla as I don't have it installed at the moment. Maybe someone else can confirm this bug?

  • Matching Color of Transparent Rectangle to Solid Rectangle

    Hi,
    I have a solid color rectangle on a layer.
    I would like to create several similar rectangles on different layers with different opacity levels (i.e. 90%/75%/50% etc), that will match the solid color rectangle exactly, when they are against a white background.
    I used Hue/Saturation on the transparent rectangles to approximate the solid color, but the eyedropper shows that I am a of couple values off. Is there a way to accurately match these colors exactly?

    "...But they don't seem to control RGB values individually-only the direct swatch editor seems to allow direct RGB value entry, and of course, that is useless for a layer with opacity settings, as it only shows the 100% opacity value..."
    The above excerpt suggests you are not really grasping the role of opacity. Let me take another shot at explaining it and then I promise not to pound on you further.
    Opacity does not change color values in a layer. A pixel with RGB values in a layer of 134/174/154 will still be 134/174/154 no matter what the layer opacity. To appreciate that, underly the layer not with white but with transparency, and check the layer color values as you change its opacity---they will not change.
    What you see and the info palette shows, however, is a combination of the layer color value and that of the substrate. The percent of the top layer value contributing to the result is its opacity. The percent of the substrate's color value added is the top layer's transparency, which is nothing more than the inverse of its opacity.
    Thus, in normal mode, the resultant color value is a mixture of the layer value and the substrate value, the proportions of which are fixed by the opacity. Again, layer opacity does not change layer color values but, rather, the net effective color value of the layer in combination with whatever lies beneath it. And probably needless to say except that some users think of it as "nothing", the values of a white substrate are 255/255/255---color to the max!
