Strange internet connection behavior
I am experiencing strange behavior with my internet connection. Overall, it's erratic. E.g., when I boot the system, the internet connection fails. Yet, after it does so, I am able to run my browser, load web pages, access streaming media -- all while right-clicking on the internet connection button on the menu bar shows no connection in effect.
However, for the most part I am unable to to download my email -- though occasionally that works, too.
Finally, I am never able to initiate an internet connection. E.g., if I right-click on the connection button in the menu bar and click on "Connection PPPoE," the system eventually informs me that it "could not find a PPPoE server."
Throughout, my DSL modem shows that I am connected.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Eric Weir
The MacBook is connected directly to a DSL modem. No router.
I checked and reset my account settings, although they were as you recommend before I did so. I also reset the modem -- disconnected power for about 30 seconds, then held the reset button in for about 10 seconds after reconnecting the power cable.
After doing that the system attempted to connect and reported it couldn't find a PPPoE server. After getting that report, however, I was able to load web pages and download my mail.
Checking network settings through system preferences with the situation as above shows that I have an ethernet connection but not a PPPoE connection. However, if, with the window for the latter selected, I click on "help me" and then "diagnostics," the system reports that the internet connection is working properly.
Bottom line at this point? I can load web pages and download email, but the menu bar indicates no connection. Paralleling that, the system says I have no PPPoE connection, but diagnostics says the internet connection is working properly.
Five minutes from now I may or may not be able to download email. I probably will be able to load web pages.
An AT&T technician is scheduled to be here this afternoon. This strikes me as an operating system problem, however, not a problem with my ISP.
Again, additional clues would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Eric Weir

A strange Internet connectivity error whern using IE 9
Hello,
I experience very strange Internet connectivity issue which happens specifically with Capital One Banking site. I wonder if somebody else already reported the same problem.
I'm on Windows 7 machine with Verizon DSL connection and uses both Internet Explorer 9 and Firefox 4.0.
The same thing happenes every time I try to use IE to make a payment. A first payment screen opens normally, but after she enters payment information and hit Continue it starts to spin and after a couple of minutes of fruitful attempts it BREAKS Internet connection!
Windows allows to fix Internet connections settings, normally blaming bad default gateway settings. Then it is enough to open your site in IE and try to pay to break it again.
Firefox, on the other end, works normally and allows to pay. So, it looks like an error in IE, but really strange one.
I also have another Win 7 machine and IE 9; the only difference is that it is on Comcast Cable rather than on Verizon DSL. There I can pay to Capital One using IE 9 without any problems. So, it must be a combination of IE bug and Verizon Internet settings, I guess. Are the machines by any chance using different Security Software or have you by any chance installed Verizon software onto the PC hooked into the DSL service?

Very Strange Internet Access Behavior After upgrade to systemd
Currently I'm having very strange issues with my wireless connection. Currently, if I connect using netcfg to a wireless access point, I have the following behavior:
1. chromium can connect to any website
2. thunderbird can send/receive emails
3. curl, firefox and opera can connect to some https sites but not http (yes: https://www.facebook.com, https://bbs.archlinux.org, no: https://archlinux.org, https://github.com)
4. wget does not connect, neither does pacman -Syu
after I upgraded to systemd, I was getting errors because of groups, so I removed extra groups. Here's what I have now:
There is currently no rc.conf in /etc
$ id ambantis
uid=1000(ambantis) gid=100(users) groups=100(users)
$ id root
uid=0(root) gid=0(root) groups=0(root),1(bin),2(daemon),3(sys),4(adm),19(log),1000(wheel)
If I try to remove the wheel group, then netcfg does not allow me to connect, neither can I connect manually with wpa_supplicant and dhcpcd
Here's the output of $ systemctrl

Really Strange Internet COnnectivity Problem
I have a wireless-G 2.4Ghz Broadband Router (Model No. WRT54G) with three computers (all wireless) and two printers (both wired) hooked up to it, but right now only one computer is able to recieve any internet connectivity whatsoever.
I've tried repairing the connection, turning off both the modem and the router and leaving them off for 15 minutes, and still I have had no luck.
Any suggestions?one way to check if you have internet connection is to go to the command prompt and type in >ping yahoo.com if you get 4 replies, then you have the connection. open your internet explorer and click on tools. on the general tab, click delete files and delete also cookies. try to use default security and make sure on the connections tab, the "never dial a connection" radio button is selected. click on the LAN connections sub-tab and uncheck all the boxes in there. try to open a website now using your internet explorer.

Strange Internet Connection Problem
I have encountered a problem with my wireless and Ethernet connections on my Windows 8.1 in my college dorm. My computer shows the symptoms of a dead internet, except I can still use Skype and play Team Fortress 2 online with other people like normal, but
whenever I try using IE, Chrome, or Firefox, it doesn't work.
Some other info: I believe a windows update may have caused it, as no other setting changes took place between when it worked and when it stopped working.
I can still connect to Google by typing in the IP address and perform searchs on the site, so I believe it may be a DNS problem. But I have tried many other things on the internet I thought to be in a similar situation over the past few days, but none of
them have helped.
I'm hoping posting here will give me some answers as I am really running out of options for ways idea on how to fix this.I am having the same issue. I can go to the Microsoft store but when I try going on the Internet it says I have no Internet connection. Can someone please help.

Very strange internet connection speed issue,
Good Evening all.
I have a strange issue. I got hooked up with a new ISP a few weeks ago and since that time I have had very slow PC connection speeds. I have done speed tests, and I get between 16 and 17mbps down, but the PC runs and acts like I am getting 4 to 5mbps. I have a Compaq Presario running Windows Vista Home Premium. Service Pack 2. There is 3 gig of ram and a 3ghz processor, with a 32 bit OS.
Here is how the setup looks. The netgear modem is plugged into a regular phone jack and then goes through a router and then it is hardwired to the PC. If I wire the PC direcly to the modem instead of going through the router, I get the same mbps no matter what. Between 16 and 17.
The wierd thing is that I can watch a movie on Netflix through my Wii with no issues. This is strange to me because I would figure there to be more issues with wireless connections rather than wired connections.
I have a netgear modem and a netgear router.
I am almost wondering if my PC is not processing the incoming speed correctly. I don't know if this is correct, because I used to have Xfinity internet before this new internet and had absolutely no problems. BTW my new ISP is called Edge Networks. The boast speeds up to 30mbps. I know that 16 to 17 is pretty good, I just do not know why It seems like I am not getting anywhere near that.
While on the subject, I also have another PC that I have gotten a USB adapter and am using wireless to access the internet. This PC gets 5 to 6mbps down. It is a Compaq running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1. It has 3 gig ram and a 64 bit OS with a 2.3ghz processor.
I do not have a clue why I have such slow inernet page loading speeds, other than the possibility that my PC's are just severly outdated.
Can anyone help explain this issue?Evadfa, welcome to the forum.
I suggest contacting your ISP for help with the problem. They should be able to help you since they know their product better than anyone. I don't believe that it is a computer problem, since it is happening on two separate computers.

When I got uyp this morning, my machine was asleep and I saw that my router is active. Little Snitch shows a connection to http://www.ltes.ilc.edu.tw/, which is a site in Taiwan that I am not familiar with/ Little snitch shows two connections with the prefix sshd.
What does this mean and how can I stop the connection?Hello again:
Is it your understanding that this site is trying to make a connection, but not successful
That would be my guess, but it is just a guess as I cannot replicate the situation you described.
I use the most robust OS X firewall setting +"block all incoming connections."+ My router also displays a dummy IP address to the internet - yours may do that as well.
If you go to utilities>console the firewall log files will have all sorts of stuff. In my own case, I get lots of stealth connection attempts because, I think, I use OpenDNS to address a slow Mail send issue.
By the by, I am a long way from a connectivity "expert!"

Bit of a strange question regarding security and internet connection
This is a bit of an odd question so bear with me for a moment.
I sold my old G4 to someone I didn't know yesterday. While he was looking at it to make sure it was working I allowed him to plug my ethernet cable in (connected to both a netgear router and a cable modem) and go online to install an application on the computer he was buying. It did't take long and I didn't actually see what he installed but after he left and I plugged back in to my mac pro, my internet connection started suffering. It started by being very slow and then timing out with servers. I reset the modem and even bypassed the router but the connection did not improve and eventually I could only get a self assigned IP address with no internet, although the modem appeared to be fine.
Aside from finding my I.P. address at my location, is there anything else he could have compomised security wise, either in the name of harvesting some kind of info or just creating a problem in the cable network when I let him use my connection on the g4?
I think that most likely I'm being a little paranoid but the timing of this is a bit strange. It literally went down hill just after he left.
Today the cable company is reporting a wider internet outage than just me but I just though I'd throw it out there to see if there are any security wholes exploitable when someone uses your internet connection (I would think and hope that there are not).
thanks a bunchWell, in the closing the stable door approach it is a good idea to do a complete erase and install when selling any computer. There's lots of references to this and even one about removing a certain file so when they start up they get the brand new Mac greeting window. If you do not erase the drive using the secure erase feature in Disk Utility then with an $80 investment plus an empty spare drive the purchaser can likely recover any files you had on the computer recently if they consider it worth the effort.
I suspect the internet issue is not related to this, especially since your ISP commented about problems. -
Strange problem with the internet connection
Hello,
I've a strange problem with the network connection , I have bought a Iphone 3g in Italy in date 31st
October 2010. Now in Italy I have just subscribed a telephone rental with Wind company, where there is an unlimited internet service. The problem is that in my Iphone there is not the line.
All this is strange because I receive the messages from social networks (like facebook and msn) but I cannot open tha page for the internet connection. I have gone to Apple store and I have tried to put my SIM in an other phone (iphone 3g or 3gs): my SIM is perfectly working.
The problem is only for the internet connection on my phone because wifi connection is good.
Thanks!!Please help everyone who has the same problem by posting yr solution, thx!

Strange itunes internet connection problem
Hey all,
i've been experiencing a strange iTunes problem this summer and was hoping I could get some help. If it helps, im on windows XP (sp2) with the newest version of iTunes.
Here's my problem:
When I insert a CD to import into my library, iTunes fails to retrieve any track info from the internet. This is despite having my preferences set to Automatically retrieve CD track names from the internet. I don't get an error message or anything, just a failure to get any names. However, I can click Advanced -> Get CD Track Names and it will retrieve the names like nothing was wrong in the first place...strange. But there's more:
I can no longer see any Radio stations or categories when I click the Radio tab, just an empty window pane appears with no accompanying error message. To confuse me further, I can get on the iTunes Music store with no problem whatsoever. I haven't tried downloading a song yet, but I can at least stream samples...
so then I go Help -> run Diagnostics -> Network Connection, and I get a FAILED red light for "Internet Connection Status"
what is the DEAL?!When you run network diagnostics and anything fails, there is a help button that should come up to help troubleshoot what might be blocking itunes.
Try turning off any internet security, firewall or anti-malware that you might have running on the computer. If this works, then check the website for the programs you turned off and see if there are any updates.
Here is an article from the apple support website that might help out.

Airport extreme takes long time to establish stable Wifi to Internet connection
Hi,
I am using Airport Extreme together with Airport express (to extend the Wifi signal). When I connect my MBP, MBA or my PC to the Wifi network it takes (in 90% of cases roughly) quite a long time - even up to 20mins - to get stable Internet connection. The connection drops due to time-outs or with "DNS server cannot be reached" messages. Connectivity on my local network is just fine and does not seem to show similar behavior. After some time all settles down and my connection is fast and stable. The strange thing is that my iPads are not affected by this - i.e. I can browse internet fast on my iPad, but my MBP cannot reach a single internet page at the same time. When I switch to wired connection, everything is just fine from the beginning - no time-outs etc. Sometimes it helps to switch the Airport Extreme off and on again, but it's about a 50/50 chance.
Anyone got an idea what's going on?
Thanks a lot for help! You have wireless gremlins.. plus voodoo..
It is the nature of the beast.
My recommendation is to clean up, simplify and start over.
1. Reset the AE to factory and start over. This time use all short names no spaces and pure alphanumerics. Same for passwords but longer.
2. While you have problems try using different names for the two bands.. eg AE24ghz and AE5ghz
3. Use fixed channels.. 11, 8, 6 in that order for 2.4ghz and usually one low and one high for 5ghz.. say 36 and 149. (actual number depend on geo-region).
4. Reset the Express to factory and test extend on both the 2.4ghz and 5ghz.. (assuming gen2.. if gen1 just 2.4ghz). The express must get excellent signal to transmit excellent connection.. if it is poor then it will make things worse not better.
5. Use the apple wireless diagnostics.. to help you determine how the signal is in various parts of the house.

http://support.apple.com/en-au/HT202663
There are plenty of these available .. paid for and free but since it is built in give it a go.
6. Setup IPv6 to link-local only.
This setting is here.
7. In the client computers with issues.. clean out all current wireless names.. reboot the computer and rediscover the wireless again.. put in the password and set to remember the network.
With Yosemite.. wireless issues are a given.. expect them.. they are part of the deal.
You might even need to do a clean install of the OS.. any upgrade install to Yosemite with issues should be treated as so normal.. it is just always going to happen. -
OS 10.4.9 Combined Update Killing Internet Connection
Hey All,
So here is my situation - last night I ran TechTools as my ibook has been acting somewhat erratically as of late (shutting down completely without warning when the battery gets to about 1/4 strength). Techtools found errors and I asked for them to repair it...and it wiped my drive clean.
So, I erased and restored using the provided discs. Once this was done, I was able to connect to my wireless network no problem. I ran the software update which of course found a number of downloads. After completing most of them, my internet connection was suddenly lost. I noticed that this happened while the 10.4.9 Combined update was being installed, and it was marked as not being completed.
Network Diagnostics shows that I was able to connect to my Airport, but could no longer reach my ISP. I tried to connect via ethernet directly to my cable modem, and could still not connect.
I decided to erase and reinstall again, and the same thing happened. My internet connection was fine until the OS 10.4.9 combined update started to download. This is killing me...help?Thanks for the advice - I do have a strong suspicion that the logic board needs to be replaced based on the other behavior that brought me to use TechTools which caused this whole mess to begin with, however AHT showed that everything passed. I do find it quite strange that it works fine until it starts to download the 10.4.9 combined update though.
I will download the combined update and burn it to a disc and try to run it on the machine tonight and see if that makes any difference. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? -
Internet connectivity issues with SA 520W router
Hi,
We have configured Cisco Small Business Pro (SA 520W) in a small office and all computers are connected with wifi. We are facing following problems:
1. Computer is connected with network and 100% signals available but there is no internet. After repairing network from computer or sometimes rebooting computer fix the this problem. What cause internet connectivity problem?
2. Sometimes computer is connected with internet and everything work fine but suddenly there is no internet. May be internet come back again after 2 minutes etc. Strange behavior.
3. Sometime there is no internet connection even after trying all possible tuneing but internet connection become alive again if we reboot router.
All these problems appear randomly on different computers. Can anyone tell what's the reason of all these problems and how can fix it?
Thanks.
SajjadI have the just similar problem since few days , for long time I have no issues with wireless router
I have five static IP addresses I am using 1 static IP for the Router and other for the internal use
I though it was my inter provider technical issue,
The internet is working through provider gateway router but not through a Cisco SA520W
some times it works some time it wont resolve host name, internal LAN works perfect ,but internet drops packets and it is very slow
If we dynamically setup the router, it works but not for the static IP address
my old configuration is not saved , reset to factory defaults even then it did not work
I do have 24 port cisco switch when I login there is no gui console just blank blue screen with text boxes
I appreciate some can guide.
I believe we need the update firmware on both devices .I appreciate for the help
Thanks

Since updating to 10.5.5 yesterday, I can not connect to the internet nor email anymore.
My Time Capsule (Airport) is working fine because I can connect using my iPod Touch that is also using it.
By the way, I've sent this message using the Explorer browser in Windows XP, running on the SAME Mac with Parallels emulation, which is working fine. Strange, hm?
I suspect the bug is in the update. Now I wonder how we are going to do Software Update without internet connection.
Anybody have the same experience? This thread caught my eye, because I have spent a lot of time trying to help people with internet problems... and the solved status made me curious! There seems to be a few people with the DNS changer trojan horse at the moment..
I wonder how it got there.
Trojan Horses are usually installed when you agree to provide your admin credentials to install some software (whilst visiting a website).
Installing software from the net that you have not explicitly verified first (through mac forums) is generally a bad idea. Once you have given a process your admin credentials, it can do whatever it wants to your system.
This is also a reason why it is a bad idea to run your regular usage as an Admin user. It is possible to install software as an Admin user without entering any username/password - and it can easily give itself root access to your computer.
Cheers,

Dock and Internet Connection Problem
Since downloading some software updates recently, my computer has been behaving strangely. Most notably, I no longer have an internet connection on my Mac. My Mac is the computer connected to my wireless router and my other computers pick up the internet signal fine. Network Diagnostics show all aspects FAILED.
This all became apparent when I hit F12 to access my Dashboard. All of my widgets were INOP and then my Dock went dead--wouldn't pop up. I had to restart my computer to get my dock to show.
Can anyone help?Well after some troubleshooting, it looks like my network card may be the culprit. Does anyone know the cost of replacing one and/or where I can order one if it comes to that? Maybe it's just some settings (wishful thinking?). Can anyone help?
