Strange noise buzzing behind my Mac

Lately my Mac has been making a weird buzzing noise from behind the screen. It might be the fan or something, but I hate to say it, but I hit the back of the computer and the noise stops. It only happens after my computer sleeps overnight or for a long period of time and then when it starts up, it makes that noise again. I have been reading other posts about this noise, but not sure if anyone had the same solution as me that hitting a certain spot stops the noise. It has nothing to do with how many programs are open or if a certain one is open.
Has anyone had this problem and has anyone fixed theirs? I do not have the apple care warranty anymore, but not sure if there was an easier fix or if I should just take it in or if I just need to suck it up and do what I have been doing. Also, I am not sure if doing the hitting is going to damage my computer in the long run. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I wouldn't keep hitting it; that could be quite bad for the drive if it's spinning. Could be a few things, but sounds like it might be a bad inverter, but you should at least bring it in for diagnosis for which there is usually no charge. When this is happening do you notice any difference in the screen? The inverter supplies AC current to power the fluorescent backlight of the screen. The buzzing noise maybe not very different from a buzzing fluorescent bulb.

  • Strange noise from my new mac pro

Bit of a silly question: my Macbook Pro keeps making these short 'whooshing' sounds, but I just can't figure where they're coming from, or why they're happening. I notice these when I have just my browser and/or iTunes running. It's from some software (i.e., not a fan noise). Any ideas?

    Hello, thanks for the responses!
x4...: Haven't tried using another account; my computer has only one registered currently (it's spanking new)
I did try logging into safe mode - while I received no indication that it was on safe mode, all sound functions appeared to be terminated when I logged on after long-pressing Shift. Panicked in a small way there, ha ha.
Bart..: Quitting email clients (mail, gmail, outlook on web) didn't help
And nope - no one else logged into computer.
All this said, the sound has stopped mysteriously right now. There's a good chance it'll start again though (it's done this before, with no connection to newly opened programmes or anything)
    Thanks, all!

  • 3 week old x1- strange low buzz/zipper noise- HDD?

    Hello all
My x1 (1291-26u) started to make a strange noise today- sounds like a low buzz or zipper type noise. It is short, and happens once every 30secs - 1 min or so. It is the noise I would imagine a fly would make if it somehow got caught inside the machine. At first I thought it may be some sort of interference with the speakers, but the noise persists when the are muted.  Ive had the machine for 3 weeks, and It has not left the house yet.
My only guess is that it is coming from the hard drive, as I have a model with a 320gb HDD- but I am a total computer novice so I honestly have no basis for that assumption. The noise occurs whether the hard drive light is on or not , and it seems to becoming from the right side of the machine.
The noise is driving me nuts- any ideas before I start a service request?
    thanks so much

It is very probably the hard drive you're hearing. Mine is audible, but has never reached a point where it has bothered me. You can always try using Lenovo's hard drive quick test tool to see if there is a problem with the hard drive, but I think it might just be the normal sound of the hard drive. I only noticed this sound on my laptop because the fan is almost silent at all times, until I put the computer under load, after which the fan emits an unbearably high-pitched sound. You shouldn't hear this sound when using the laptop anywhere else as the ambient noise is usually more than sufficient to cover it up though.

  • Strange lines appearing behind itunes

I went away for the holidays, and when I got back I booted up my 2006 iMac. Today for the first time, there are strange lines appearing behind iTunes whenever it is open but not the active window. I tried quitting and restarting iTunes, but the lines come back. I wish I could upload a screen shot of what this looks like on my desktop, it's very weird. It does not happen behind any other program window. Only iTunes. The lines appear as if they are extensions of the iTunes window formatting, in line with the side bars, etc. Has anyone else experienced this? Any tips for getting it to quit?

I just wanted to add that I am also seeing the same problem: strange lines around the borders of the iTunes window. The most obvious ones are a set of four vertical lines running parallel to both sides of the iTunes window, although there are other strange bits as well, mostly around the top corners of the window, as well as a single thin horizontal line above the top of the iTunes window. These unusual lines started appearing "out of the blue" sometime in the past few weeks -- as in, not right after an update or any other configuration change to my mac... The only change I can say I did recently was to update to OS 10.6.6, although I know others who are running 10.6.6 and aren't having this issue with iTunes. I also wanted to add that in my case, I only see these strange lines when iTunes is the active window. Further to that, updating to iTunes 10.1.2 does not fix the problem, unfortunately.

  • I have a strange noise coming from within my 2011 iMac Desktop.

I have a strange noise coming from within my 2011 iMac Desktop. This started 1 week ago and is intermittent. It sounds like an electronic drill. I have removed all external connections and powered up the Mac and just left  it running. Some 2 hours later the noise started. On hitting the space bar on the keyboard the noise stopped. I did a similar test and the noise started within 2 minutes so I have discounted any overheating issues.
With keyboard activity there is an increase in the frequency of this fault.
If you open safari when the fault reappears the URL web link text starts flashing at the same frequency as the noise. This fault can appear with or without the noise.
I’ve been typing these details out on Word and as soon as I went to save  the document the noise started  and as soon as I hit the OK option in the save window the noise ceased.
    Any thoughts will be appreciated.

I think this issue might be related to my wireless Keyboard. have just noticed that certain combinations of keys do not work. The Right hand shift + ? didn't work but started this noise. Hit another key and the noise stopped Also I have problems using the right hand shift key with the letters  Y, H & N , they don't work and are all in line.
So I'm taking the keyboard back to John Lewis. it will be easier to carry that the screen !!

  • Has anyone experienced strange beeping/buzzing in Lion, with bizarre vertical stripes?

Has anyone experienced strange beeping/buzzing in Lion, with bizarre vertical stripes?  This has happened three times in Lion.

The SMC is the System Management Controller, it controls power flow to hardware in the Mac
    For iMac and other desktops
-unplug the power cable and hold the power button for 10 seconds
    For portables with removable battery
-remove the power cable and battery then hold the power button for 10 seconds
    For portables without removable batteries
-connect the charger, press shift+control+option+power button
-The light on the charger will cycle from orange to green then back to orange

  • Satellite C855 - strange noise when tried to watch/listen something

I bought this laptop around a month ago. When I first tried to watch or listen something, sizzling kinda noise came up for a few seconds and gone.
I didn't think that it was important. But now, it happens everyday and lots of times when I listen or watch something. It buzzes, sizzles for a few seconds and it is really annoying.
    What could the problem be?
    Please help me...

Are you sure the buzz and sizzle come from the speakers / headphones?
Maybe the strange noise comes from HDD?
In this case it would be an HDD malfunction.
It could be also possible that this strange noise appears because of stressed CPU.
In such case the applications (player) hangs / freezes for a second and creates some strange noises.
Would be interesting to know if system restore / system recovery would fix it

  • N97, strange noise inside the phone

    Hei,
today I noticed a strange noise when waving the phone. It was heard behind the camera.
The noise was  heard after taking the battery, sim & SD card away, but not when the key pad was opened.
It sounds like something were lose inside the phone.
So went to Nokia service point. There we noticed that the other two 97's, that they had there,  had the same noise although not so loud as in mine.
The service guy had not noticed the same before and told me to wait until he gets more information.
Has some of you the same problem?
    N900, N95

I hear a strange noise in my phone too. After a bit of testing I realised that something is moving slightly only when the phone's keyboard is closed. When you open the keyboard and shake the phone, nothing is heard. I suppose the plastic hinges thingy mechanism that holds the keyboard makes the noise and when the keybord is close its a bit loose and makes the sound. I also think that this is the reason why on some phone the vibtation sound weird- cause this plastic thing rattles about when the phone is vibrating.
    Can someone confirm this?

  • Strange noise coming from headphone port on Macbook Pro

    Hi all
I have recently bought a brand new Macbook Pro 2.4gh Intel Core 2 Duo, and was browsing through my iTunes looking for something to play... I had plugged into the headphone jack my pair of BOSE around-ear headphones and could hear a strange noise that sounded like electrical interference. I can only hear it when nothing is playing through the headphones, like the situation I mentioned above. And i know it is a problem exclusive to my MBP as it does not happen on my iMac, iPhone, iPod ect.... any ideas what may be causing it, of how to get it to stop....?
    Thanks

    Hello
I have the same problem. I can't use my Sennheiser / V-Moda inear headphones because of that noise. I changed the MacBook, but the noise is still the same. I spent one hour talking to one guy from AppleCare and we came to the conclusion that headphones with low impedance (16 Ohm for the headphones mentioned above) are not working properly with the new MacBook Pro.
What do you think ? Is this possible ?
The solution for me was to buy a Logitech speaker system with external audio jack... and it works fine now (speaker and headphones)!
I'm a new Mac user and I'm quite disappointed about this audio issue. I really didn't expect Apple to have troubles with a headphone jack...
    Thanks for your feedback.

  • MBP 1,1: strange noises, battery failure

My MBP 1,1 (SL, 64GB Samsung SSD) recently started to make strange noises from within. It's hard to decribe, but it sounds like rapid crackling, like a hard disk put into overdrive (however a SSD is installed). Along with that, there's a high-pitched monotonous  sound.
The noise is the loudest somewhere between the ExpressCard cage and the battery multiconnector cable.
Further, when the Mac is running solely on  battery power (without the MagSafe being connected), power suddenly goes off without any warning. Although fully charged the battery LED blinks indicating it's empty.
    What I tried so far:
    - SMC reset
    - deleted power management plist
    - deleted caches
    - AHT - ok!
    - safe boot
    - second battery
    - checked connectors inside
    - disconnected fans
What could that be? My guess is the I/O-Board. Or could a malfunctioning logicboard produce such sounds?
    Thanks!

Since computers should not be making crackling sounds, that would be a good candidate to backup all of your data and have the apple techs at the genius bar run some diagnostics to see what is not working right.  Could be a loose connection that does not show up on AHT.

  • Logitech z4 Speakers making a strange noise.....

I have a Mac Pro and I am using Logitech z4 Speakers.
Recently i have noticed a strange noise that comes from my speakers. It doesn't happen all the time but when it starts it keeps doing it every minute or so. It sounds strange as if someone is talking but it is muffled...? Almost like a robot gone wrong!!!
I have unplugged the speakers and listened from the Mac Speakers and that seems to stop it. Then after I plug the speakers back in it starts again after a little while.
This is really confusing and I can't seem to find any answers on any forums.
If someone could help that would be much appreciated!!!
    Thanks!

You might be able to find some answers off of this link. I can only think of some kind of electrical distortion or a defect in the Macs sound card. Apparently Apples is not too hot and people have have had a few strange quirks with it. Good luck.

  • Strange noise (like a clock Tik Tak) from my Intel iMac

    Hello everybody...
So, in the last few days i got a very strange experience from my (usuall great) iMac.
I started to notice that I hear a strange noise around my desk, and figured out it comes from my iMac. Strange as it may be, it sounds as if u put your ears on a Swatch watch when its all quite at night, and all u can hear is the Tik Tak or something liek that....
The mac also became really slow, freezing from time to time, so i thought backup and reinstalling viia the Apple Dvd is a good idea. The mac is faster now, but the voice stayed.
So after i made sure It is a noise from the iMac, (disconnecting all devices, moving it to other rooms and so on...) and appears in any user, i contacted Apple Chat and got adviced to reset Nvram and SMC, which i did both, along with Apple Hardware Test, nothing helped, no error in the test, so was told to go to the Apple lab ....
Since I really can not afford "losing" my mac for 14 days, as i use it for my studies in uni, i would appreciate first that someone is actually reading so far my message and mayb omeone else has / had or heard about this problem and can assist me with....
Thank you very much for any info.......
    Elad

Well, I read your message, but I have no idea what could be causing the issue. If none of the standard troubleshooting remedies solved the issue then an Apple tech needs to "hear" your Mac, especially if it's loud enough to bother you.
Perhaps you got the Mac with the secret internal geothermal nuclear device.
