Strange powersave mode

In PowerMac G4 MDD 2 x 867 there appeared, after being two months not in use, a strange new behaviour: If computer is not in active use in about 10 minutes, the OS does not react to the mouse click or keyboard signal in few seconds.
In other words, there is 10 second delay after the first click of the mouse. the behaviour is very similar to awakening of the HD when the optio "put hard disk to sleep when possible" is checked.
Not a big problem, but irritating anyway.
Is there a known solution for that?

I asked the same question in hardware section.

  • Powersave mode does not work

    Hi,
This is my first post.  I have a new HP Laserjet CP2025dn.  The printer is connected to a home network via an ethernet cable (the printer has a built-in connector for this).  It is not connected wireless.
The powersave mode kicks in intermittently.  The printer should go into powersave 15 minutes after it's been idle, as long as I do not print to it or touch the control panel.  But when it goes into powersave mode, it comes out of it by itself into the "ready" mode, without any print job having been sent to it or anyone physically touching the printer.  It later goes into powersave mode, but the time it takes to do this varies.  I have tried installing the latest firmware but it makes no difference.
Now if I disconnect the network cable, it works properly, that is that it will go into powersave by itself and stay there (since I cannot send any print jobs to it with the cable disconnected).  So I must assume that some network activity is causing the printer to come out of powersave mode, but I would assume the printer is designed to do this only when a print job is sent to it, regardless of any network traffic or PCs on the network turning on or off.
Is this printer behaving as it should?  If not, is there a solution?  HP tech support seems at a loss to fix this.
    Thanks.

hello its not firmware  9.42 causing....

  • Hp officejet 4500 goes into powersave mode and won't wakeup

my hp officejet 4500 wireless printer will not wakeup from powersave mode unless the power is unplugged and plugged back in again . you can't even shut it off when in powersave mode I've had this problem since it was new and HP didn't seem to be able to solve this problem.

  • Slipped into strange video mode - how to reset?

My mac slipped into a strange video mode. It looks like some kind of reverse-video. I was playing around with configuring the icon view, and with a script that automatically positioned my windows, when this happened.
The video mode - when I boot I see the normal white-screen with apple, then the normal blue background for a second, and then it switches into "reverse-video". Menu bar is dark, lettering on menu bar is white. The usual "shadow" effect appears like a highlighted halo; the pop-up menu on the desktop appears black; the letters on that popup appear white. etc.
If I re-boot in safe mode the video appears normal.
Any suggestion what sequence of things I might try to get this reset?
    Thanks!

    Thank you!!
I had used that key combination as a shortcut for my window scripts, never even occurred to me that it might have triggered something like this.
    Thanks again.

  • 7515 Photosmart all-in-one goes offline every time it goes into powersave mode

I bought the Costco Photosmart all-in-one 7515 and it worked fine for a long time. For the last several months, every time it goes into power save mode, it goes offline and will not wake back up until you go into the wireless settings and even then, it has to be disconnected and reconnected in order to come back online. I haved checked for updates and downloaded the printer test app and it still goes offline when it goes into power save mode. Is there any way to disable the power save mode. When it goes offline, you can still ping it, so I am at a loss.

  • Strange target mode behavior

I've found when moving large files back and forth that you have to be careful about how you delete them. I use the iBook as a DVR, feeding the signal through a Dazzle, and then transfer the iMovie file to my Power Mac.
However, if you then move the file off the desktop of the iBook and into the trash on the Power Mac, you have to empty the trash while the iBook is still connected in target mode or the iBook will think the disk space (~12gb for an hour of video) is still occupied, even though that iMovie file is gone from the iBook.
    PowerMac G5 dual 2.5GHz, 1.5GB; iBook G4 1.33GHz, 1GB   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   200GB&500GB LaCie FW HD, 16x LaCie LightScribe

When the iBook is in FireWire Target Disk mode, items on its hard disk that are moved to the Trash are stored in a folder with a path along the lines of /.Trashes/501/. In normal usage, the iBook hard disk's trash is considered to be inside the home folder of the logged in account unless that folder has been moved off the startup partition. Therefore, items moved to the Trash in one usage mode will not be seen in the Trash in the other, but they can be moved back and forth by using the Go to Folder command in the Finder's Go menu, providing the first path, and then dragging the items. The 501 in the path will always be a number, and is normally either 501 or slightly above 501.

  • Officejet 4500 wireless locks up in power saver mode every few days. can I turn off powersaver mode

recently set op for wireless operation  with laptop and now leave printer power on all time and unit goes to pwoer saver mode. if in this state for more than a day or two it will lock up and must be unpluged form power sorce to restor operation. how can I correct this problem.

You can't fix it and HP techs say that a fix is in the works, but they have been saying that for over 1 year.   Some folks say to depress the 1 key and it works for them, but most folks, including me, say that does not work.

  • Macbook pro will not "wake up" after going into powersave mode?

I've tried everything. I hit the enter key any key for that matter, reclosing the macbook or even giving it a few moments. I've had some issues with it lately. Like a kernel panic last week, tried a disk utility repair option. Fixed some things but NOT this. any ideas? I think we had a recent update like two, three weeks ago this is becoming annoying. Is my macbook dying? The only time my macbook comes back to life is if I hit the power button for a few seconds. Then a grey screen appears along with a black screen then my regular screen.

    Hello, Libracious,
It sounds much like your system may be entering what is referred to as 'Safe Sleep.'
Mac computers: Progress bar appears after waking from sleep
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1757
Safe Sleep ensures that data stored in main memory will not be lost should the computer shut down due to the battery being drained completely . Prior to your computer entering sleep, Safe Sleep automatically saves the contents of main memory—such as desktop settings, open applications, and other work in progress—to the hard drive.
There are two situations in which a computer will enter safe sleep:
In the event the battery becomes completely depleted while the computer is asleep, the computer will shut down. But when a power adapter is connected or a freshly charged battery is installed, the computer can be restarted. Press the power button as if turning the computer on and it will automatically return to the desktop state that existed prior to entering sleep. This means that applications and files will remain exactly as they were prior to the computer being put to sleep, making it easy for you to continue with your work.
With the release of the OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2 supplemental update 2.0, a new feature was introduced to enter safe sleep after four hours of the computer being connected to AC power. This is an effort to comply with the European Energy Standards (ErP Lot6). This will only occur if there is no wireless or Ethernet activity and no activity from external devices such as USB storage devices.
    Cheers,
    Allen

  • Strange K7T Pro2-a problem

i have this strange problem with me k7t motherboard.
sometimes, when starting up a CPU intensive application such as a game (or while running one) the computer will automatically go in somethiing similar to powersave mode.
anyway, when i try to turn off the computer and turn it back on, when turning it back on, it will only go into this strange powersave mode, the D-Leds show different things all the time. i have to reset the bios and leave power off for a few hours before the system will run normally again.
i have tried replacing everything with other parts, including ram, hardrive, video cord, powersupply basically everything. have flashed the bios to latest version and problem still persists. anyone know why this happens?

    I have a K7T  Pro v.1 BIOS v.3.0, Duron 1200 Mhz with VIA 4 in 1 v.4.38.
i have had some serious problems recently, including the death-led's. After reading the thread in the old forum about the problems with the MS-6330 series I'm getting pretty nervous about the future of my poor MB.
But what i've been wondering about is wether these problems might have something to do with the AGP port and using heavy 3D graphics. I have read that several users have provoked failures when using 3D-screensavers.
My problems seemed to start when i installed an MSI G2mx400 AGP card (replacing a Cardexpert SiS 6326 8Mb PCI card). Using the DirectX Diagnosis tool (v. 8.0 and 8.1) my machine crashes on the 3D-tests. I've also tried an ATI Rage 128 16Mb AGP card with both Win2k and WinXP with exactly the same problem.
After finally getting the four red-leds I tried replacing the CPU with a Duron 600Mhz, but nothing happened so I guess the advice about doing that somewhere earlier in this post doesn't always work... Eventually i managed to wake the system by shorting the CMOS.
After this rescue I have replaced the AGP card with my old PCI card and it seems to be working fine so far. So after all I've been reading about the bad/overheating chips and capacitators and so on, I'm thinking maybe the AGP card could be one of the causes of this?
It would be interesting to hear if anyone has experience with the failure rate of AGP vs PCI...

My iphone 4s will not find my 6500A  710n-z when in powersave/sleep mode.  I really don't want to disable the powersave mode...it already has latests firmware installed.  Suggestions?  It will print if I wake up the printer by hitting the power button to wake it manually.

I had this problem for about 3 months Now, but today I think I fix it,  by clicking on SETTINGS and then DO NOT DISTURB and switching MANUAL from green to White, now I receive my calls, try this it worked for me..:)

  • G5 strange sudden "sleep" mode

Just noticed some strange new behavior on this PowerMac G5:
left unattended for a while, I came back to the machine running on high fan mode with black screen.
Neither mouse nor keyboard activity could to get the G5 out of this strange sleep mode, so I had to force a shut down.
Subsequent Safe Boot and Disk Utility check did not find any issues.
Energy Saver settings: set to put computer & screen to sleep after 1h (harddrive option was not selected)
Anyone have an idea what could cause this strange stand by mode?

    Thanks, old comm guy.
Unfortunately, no luck with any of the suggested solutions:
display not coming up after resetting the PMU, reseating the video card or in single-user mode.
OK, the one other area is the PRAM battery, which Apple claims can also cause this problem to occur. If the battery is more than a couple of years old, it is suspect. I would definitely try that route, as it is easy and relatively inexpensive. You can get the battery at Radio Shock but if you are near a Fry's, for instance, it's a lot cheaper there. Or you can check the open-circuit voltage with a good DVM and get a clue, the magic number being greater than 3.6 for confidence. More confidence comes with loading it with a 200 ohm resistor and measuring the voltage.
Could the video card failure have been caused by the AppleJack session
    - or did the video card just decide to go?
I wouldn't expect AppleJack to have had any effect on the video card. I had a 9600 Pro tank last December, which led to a succession of replacements until I finally got to where I should have been to begin with, which is the Ultra 6800. Nonetheless, do the battery thing before trying another card.
As an aside, I started my little video card adventure by putting in a PCI video card from my G3, which did give me video but zip support for the cool stuff. That at least let me see that things were otherwise OK (I had already done the network trick, which gave me some confidence).
These things can be an adventure, so say the least.

  • Display changes color mode after restart.

I recently turned off my computer for a couple days and when I restarted my iMac screen is displaying in a strange color mode. It looks like the contrast is turned up and the color depth is in 256 color mode. I've gone into the preferences and tried about eveything I can think of but nothing switches it back to normal.
When I restart, everything goes back to normal for about 3 seconds and then it switches back to this strange display settings again.
I'm stumped, any help would be appreciated.

  • In ios 7, how do I get the calendar to open each time in list mode?

In ios 7, on the iphone 5, how do I get the calendar to open each time in list mode? It always opens is strange new mode and goes to list mode only if I click the search icon.

For some weird reason beyond my comprehension, and I am a smart fellow I think; Adobe starting with acrobat/reader 8 has decided to hid the menu icon Ribbon (i guess you would call it) until you have a PDF open. In versions past if you had these icons on the screen you could actually use them to open Pdf's or create pdfs from scans.
Pesonally for me its a dumb idea. But was justified as allowing for more screen area to view. The guy that thought up the idea should be taken out behind the barn and given 10 licks for stupid ideas. :-)

  • Indicator-powersave & throttle

Thanks to some very useful advice here in the thread and a lot of time on google, this is shaping up into something worthwhile!
indicator-powersave is a fork of indicator-cpufreq with additional controls for system-wide powersaving. It is not a detailed reporting tool like powertop (see throttle check), but enables more comprehensive powersaving than powertop checks for. It is not as multi-purpose as tlp but should be as effective for anything other than a Thinkpad and with a convenient, user-discretion menu to select options by mouse.
The front end is an application indicator:
The backend is a bash script which does it's best to manipulate runtime system settings (sysfs/procfs) rather than modify config files or employ external tools where possible: ENERGY_PERF_BIAS (x86_energy_perf_policy), HDD (hdparm), LAN (ethtool), WLAN (iw), and GPU (nvidia-settings) need optional, external tools. This script works without the indicator.

For maximum effectivenes, it's best to apply the settings to new devices immediately with udev. Not all of the powersaving options are accessible from udev directly. These rules enable most of the powersaving settings on boot and for all newly connected devices. I'm not quite satisfied with this, so it isn't currently packaged with indicator-powersave.

Settings that require modifying unique configuration files and on/off only switches have been intentionally omitted.
Settings for proprietary and OEM devices are being added as needed (on the hardware I have; open to suggestions for more!).
    ::UPDATE::
    Massive under-the-hood improvements for throttle:
-All external tools are now optional; missing tools will be skipped over.
-Option stacking works as advertised (among other code improvements).
-Better option style: "option setting" eg "ht on" The old style still works too, ie "ht-on" as still used by indicator-powersave, and all options can take {performance, powersave}.
Throttle cut systemd service: throttle-cut.service (disabled by default)
indicator-powersave's "GPU Throttle" menu still does not work for no logical reason. throttle gpu {full, cut} works.

Thanks! This will be best for making sure the system starts up in low power mode (udev rules probably take effect earlier than my systemd service would). Still need to work on a way to toggle all of them on and off. Something like "systemctl start/stop runtime-pm"... Maybe I can have it toggle the powersave mode through udev?
Then use a script if you need to disable some of the settings to maximize performance when needed.
or you can write systemd service that simply runs the powersaving script.
This may be what I'm looking for.
you can disable nmi watchdog via sysctl or kernel command line
These days I compile the kernel without watchdog support, but a good idea no less.
There are also some additional power saving possibilities for your HD, although they may not be best suited for desktop hard drives.
I have four SATA II drives in a 2TB RAID:0 array... if they have powersaving options I'll give them a shot.

  • 6120 - Blank screen in power saver mode

    Hi everybody!
I have recenty become a proud 6120 owner (my first symbian :-)), and I have 1 question:
how can I prevent in power saver mode, my screen to go complety blank??? I would like to see the status of my phone (time, missed calls, messages, etc.)!
    this is really annoying!
can anybody help me, how to change/prevent this?
    many thx in advance
    daniel

In menu/settings/themes/powersaver I have to tick one of three options (time/date, text or animation). Whichever is ticked I get at least the clock in powersaver mode. Events show under the date (or text if you choose text) so keypad locked has a symbol, missed calls have a number (of missed calls) and a symbol and so on.
However I have also noticed the screen is totally blank after a while and pressing a button starts the powersaver cycle again - briefly showing the dark main screen (including missed call message etc) before showing the clock with the symbols for a short while again. The time it takes to enter powersaving mode is in the display settings but I can't see a setting for how long it shows for.
Why the clock etc doesn't stay I do not know - I presume even this would eat the batteries more than strictly necessary. I can't see any option to keep it but it may there somewhere!!
