Stuck during string break-up....

Question

All,
I have a table say, sample. it has a column col1 with varchar data. i want to have the broken list of characters in the string. For example.
SQL> create table sample as
  2  select 'apple' col from dual
  3  union
  4  select 'banana' col from dual
  5  /
Table created.
SQL> select * from sample
  2  /
COL
apple
bananaI want the output to be like this.
COL       CHARS
apple     a
apple     p
apple     p
apple     l
apple     e
banana    b
banana    a
banana    n
banana    a
banana    n
banana    aBelow are my trials and couldn't succeed.
select item, substr(item, rownum, 1)
