Sudden, drastic slowdown - SWOD - ideas?

Hi all,
A few days ago I woke up to a nightmare - macbook pro running extremely slowly, SWODs all over, every program slow to open and run, approaching unusability.
I looked at activity mOnitor - plenty of ram. Looked at HD - plenty of space. No process was eating up power. This problem persists when I restart - slow bootup and slow to draw the windows on the desktop.
I cleaned up the desktop, cleared out my pRam, which helped for a day (kind of) but now back to slowdown.
Any ideas? Is this just the death rattle of my hD?  It was a very sudden and drastic slowdown. Before this the comp had run very well for 2 years with few minor problems.
Thanks
John

  • New Mac User Facing Sudden System Slowdowns - Advice Appreciated

I recently purchased a MacPro for video editing, switching from Premiere on my PC.
Everything was working great for the past month, and now suddenly I've been having terrible slowdowns in Final Cut Pro. Shortly after these slowdowns occured (constant dropped frames), I tried to restart the system and received a black screen with messages:
    exited abnormally, bad system call;
    respawning too quickly; throttling
I restarted, and this time the computer seemed to start up normally, but I'm still experiencing the slow performance and the dropped frames in Final Cut.
I'm fairly adept at solving performance issues in a WinXP environment, but am very new to this.
If someone could give me some troubleshooting info, I'd greatly appreciate it. Could this be a RAM issue? I did purchase extra RAM from a third party to up my total from 1 GB to 3 GB shortly after I purchased the Mac Pro. I'm also using an ATI X1900 graphics card purchased through Apple.
The only thing I have done to the system over the last couple days before this happened was download a couple free plug-ins for Final Cut and connect the Mac to the internet through an ethernet cable coming from the same router that is attached to my PC.
Again, any help, general or specific, would be greatly appreciated.

I use Final Cut Express and I wouldn't have installed the "free" plugins at all. Best advice: remove them and reinstall Final Cut Pro over your current installation of Final Cut Pro. I'm assuming here you are using the latest universal release of FCP.
As far as I know there are no or few universal plugins. And more importantly I know of no "free" universal plugins.

  • Sudden System Slowdown

Today, inexplicably, my system has slowed down dramatically. I'll double-click on a folder, it'll wait a second, then open. I'll scroll my mouse wheel, it'll wait a second, then scroll. I'll hover over the dock, it'll wait a second, then jerkily appear. What could be the problem? I've restarted a few times, I've repaired permissions, still, slow performance. How can I bring my Mac back to its springy self?
I did install Adobe's Creative Suite 4 recently. Could that have anything to do with it? (I still have over 200 GB left of hard disk space.)

Percentages read 1.88% for User, 5.55% for System, 0.00% for Nice, and 95% Idle.
Does any of the above point to a slowdown culprit?
If those are the type of readings you get while it's slow, it rules out contention for you CPU . . . No one task is taking much, and only 5%-30% is in use, total!
It looks like you have a number of windows/tabs open in Firefox, which would also explain WindowServer having a lot of threads and a fair amount of CPU to manage them. If you don't, that may be worth investigating.
It also pretty much rules out insufficient memory, but take a look at it if you want. Click the +System Memory+ tab towards the bottom, and watch the total of Free and Inactive memory. That's the amount of memory not being used, and available when/if needed. As long as there's even 50 mb, you have enough, and OSX isn't having to swap it out to disk. Another indication of that is the +Page Out+ count; it's no doubt zero or low in your case.
FYI, I'm listening to Pandora (streaming radio) on Firefox if that gives you any necessary info.
Can you do that via Safari (or any other browser) rather than Firefox? If so, see if you get the same results with another browser. There may be something in the way Firefox is handling it that's causing a problem.
The hardest part of this sort of thing is narrowing-down just what's running, and what it's doing, when things slow down.
If the slowdown lasts for a while, try quitting open apps one at a time, to see if stopping one suddenly speeds things up again. If that's consistent, at least you know where to look.

  • Sudden latency problems - any ideas?

    Hi all
I am recording on my iMac 27 Quad Core using an Apogee Duet.  I've got a track up-and-runnng with only a small amount of stuff going on.  Last night, while recording, I had NO latency whatsoever.  Now, the next day, when I arm a track to record, I am getting a noticable delay.
Why would it suddenly start like this?  Any ideas?  I can normally handles tens of tracks with no problem at all.
    Thanks!
    Steve

This is an old post but for anyone else who searches this and wants a soultion I've found a great workaround:
    - Go to your Ultilities > Audio MIDI Setup
    - A list should apper on the left of all interfaces. The interface you are trying to use should be on the list.
    - Click on the '+' symbol on the bottom of the list and select 'Create Agggregate Device', this should add a new virtual audio interface. Name it whatever you want, but make sure it's different then all of the others on the list.
    - On the right should be a list of available interfaces with inputs and outputs. Select the interface you would like to fix to be part of the virtual device.
    - Open up Logic and go to Logic > Preferenes > Audio
    - There should be an input and output device listed. Open up the drop down menu for the input device and the device you just created should be there. Select it as the input (and output as well if you're using it for the output) and it shouldn't have anymore issues. I don't know why this is, but it worked perfectly for me after I had this issue.

  • Sudden system slowdown, start up and software functional issues

The following happened when I started up my iMac in the morning. The only thing I did the night before that was outside my normal email/browsing/dreamweaver routine was to plug in my iPad to update apps and download an instagram phone app. iTunes did take me to my billing login and asked me to confirm CVV code which I hadn't expected. It told me I was using a different computer than the one I usually use - I wasn't.  Other than that, nothing seemed out of the ordinary all evening
    Following morning symptoms as follows
    Start up
Slow start up grey screen with progress bar and wheel which leads to a log on screen. Normally no progress bar and no need to login.
Desktop appears but the 20 or so files and folders take a while to appear. The Finder bar top of screen does not appear until I click on the Finder icon in the dock. Wacom tablet doesn't function and preferences for the wacom when clicked throws  up a warning " Wacom tablet driver has a problem - reboot system or reinstall or update the driver. Items that usually start up such as Skype and stickies do not open automatically. Icons that would normally appear on the finder bar top screen such as dropbox and sophos do not appear.
    Other behaviours
Clicking a link to a web article from an email throws up the prompt "You are opening the application 'Firefox' for the first time. Are you sure you want to open this application?"
    Documents in Pages appear blank
    All operations are slow/delayed
Disk Utility: Verifying disk permissions shows about 1200 permission errors. Repaired them, verifyed again and it looks like they are all still wrong.
Tried  running sophos but it seems to sit in 'Calculating...' mode and doesn't indicate it has scanned any files.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on here, what might have caused it and what the best course of action might be? Please note, I will be going away on holiday for a week on Sunday, so I will not be able to respond to anyone between the 14th and 20th April.
    Thanks
Also just removed sophos and downloaded it anew. The install is taking an age - it's been 15 minutes now. Could be part of the general malaise or maybe it just isn't going to install.

If this started happening without your having made any changes and without a warning of low disk space, then it's likely that the startup drive, or some other hardware component, is failing. Back up all data immediately, then run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test.
Even if the test is negative, you should make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested more thoroughly.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) on the advice of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

If you are having issues with free apps, you may want to verify that the billing information you have on files with the iTunes Store is correct and up to date, even if you aren't going to be charged for the apps. You may find the following article helpful:

  • Drastic slowdown of speed from router to computer.

This morning I found my internet connection had slowed (iPlayer kept buffering every 30 seconds).
I checked my speed on Speedtest.net and found I was running 1.24mb download and 0.3mb upload. It is normally 6.5mb download and 0.34 upload. I turned off my mobile and the other computer and retested. It was the same.
I did a test on the BT speedtest and it was the same. I switched off the router for one minute and then re-tested. I got the following result 7.55mb download to the router but then from there to the computer I am only getting 1.23mb.
I've not come across this before and was wondering if there is anything I haven't done or is this a hardware issue.
    Any help/pointers greatly appreciated.
    Martin

  • Wireless suddenly stops working, no idea why......

Over the last two days, my wireless router has just kinda stopped working.  I've lived in a two story home since April and when I had my services moved over, the router was placed in an area where it would be about the same distance from devices on either side of the house.   We've had absolutely no problems since the installation 5-6 months ago.  This is with Computers/Laptops upstairs and down, as well as gaming consoles and an iPad.
Everything has worked seemlessly....until about two days ago.
Out of nowhere, literally....most of our devices upstairs away from the router couldn't even find the network at all and the ones downstairs were extremely slow.
After contacting Verizon and troubleshooting it (to no avail), they've decided to ship me out a new router which I guess will be here next week but I just am having trouble understanding why it just stops working out of nowhere.  The router hasn't been moved nor have any settings been changed.
The guy on the phone had me reset the battery box out in my garage and that did absolutely nothing but after doing some research on my own, it seems the router/modem is a piece of junk and tends to quit working after a little while.
When I hardwire myself into the router, it works without fail but the wireless aspect of it has just curled up and died on me over the last few days and I'm simply at a loss as to why and how this isn't something I should be able to correct on my own.
I have Fios and I pay for one of the higher speed packages, I don't recall which off hand but the router that I have Actiontec MI424-WR Ref F.
Anybody else have issues with this thing dying?  If so, any way to fix it/make it work?
I understand that Verizon has shipped a "new" router to me but it won't be arriving until probably next week and I have to get this figured out sooner than that for my online classes if at all possible.
Halfway tempted to just go buy a modem/router.....

Log into the Westell at http://192.168.1.1/ (same goes for ActionTecs) and visit the Wireless Settings. Disable Automatic Channel Selection, and choose Channels 1, 6, or 11 to use, whichever gives the best performance, range and stability. Make sure, before applying the settings you ensure a check box for Remembering your settings through reboots is checked, this way the settings remain permanent.
The FiOS routers should be using a login of admin for the username, and the router's serial number as the password.

  • FileMakerPro shut/slow down on G5/Tiger network with G3 server OS9

We have recently upgraded (insurance co. mandated) our medical office from a happily running system to one that's driving us insane. We were running 6 older iMacs, OS9.2 with a G3 server running OS9.2.1 over a TCP/IP network. Our office software is a FilemakerPro based system uses FMPServer on the server. We now have workstations iMac 1.8 GH G5s running OS10.4. Software company told us we could continue using the G3 server running OS9.2.1 with the upgraded Filemaker Pro software. (Same network) They had recommended that we not go to dual core Intel due to incompatibilities they knew existed. Since the install we have had numerous problems with sudden drastic slowdowns that can only be fixed by a reboot of everyone on the network and the server. Also individual computers get thrown out of the software with "the application FileMakerPro quit unexpectedly" message. This can occur during work or while sitting idle. Software co. suggested upgrade of software to 10.4.6 to the G5's, (they do not recommend .7 or .8) to stop problem. Have verified permissions-nothing much there. Upgraded one workstation to 10.4.6 with no difference in performance. Am questioning that the system software on the server needs to come up to OS10.4 even though they have told me no. Would have to buy CD's for the G3. We're looking for any suggestions before all employees quit.

Hey Bee-Had to pack it in last night-too many hours at the office this week. Thanks for looking at this. When I did the verify on each of the workstations very little came up-I apologize for not remembering message at this point but maybe only two or three lines on each of the G5's-same message on each with statement "verified and repaired" at the end. I don't remember if I ran permissions on the server. My employee Kevin-the best-may have done it. He's a PC user but trying very hard to help on this. I'm giving him one of the old red imacs to take home-maybe convert him. It occurs to me that since the software company did the data transfer, it's possible that an AFP connection may be hanging around on something. Not quite sure how to track that down. Thank goodness I spent time on the forum-I was going to try intalling Tiger on the G3 server this weekend-would have slowed us down to a crawl. Am heading over there soon after Acme delivers groceries-Acme online has changed my life. Have to install new version of Timbuktu so they can get in to fix some other problems-so many glitches. Had Timbuktu on the server-buuutt-after Verizon guy put DSL connect on server, workstations would not see the server-disabled internet connect on the server-then they see it. So in order for network to function, have to keep the server off the DSL ine for now and load Timbuktu on a G5. Someone suggested a faster drive-my Dad-Mac guy since the beginning-thinks that would be useful.By the way we have two drives for the server and copy back and forth in case one goes down. Patient data base has over 9000 patients plus insurances/providers/billing going back to '98. We do our own billing. I know TMI but I'm trying to knock these problems down one at a time. We are being mandated-both federal and insurance company to go all electronic for referrals, claims submissions, etc. Next immediate need is to get data out for an e-prescribing pilot program-husband is one of 150 BC of DE docs to RX from a loaded PDA. Sorry for the length-Yikes DEW

  • Slowdown in Connect Speed

I an experiencing a drastic slowdown in my connection speed. Usually, I achieve a speed of 7mbps, currently the maximum speed is 1.9 mbps. I have run all the internal checks, inlcuding directly connecting to the 'clean' Master socket and they make no difference. I also checked with a couple of other users I know who use BT Broadband on the same exchange and they are suffering the same problem.
BT are not reporting any problems on the Whatton Exchange, but it appears we are receiving an ASDL service rather than ASDLMax we should be getting.
I am not prepared to go through the Telephone Help Desk as in past experience it takes them weeks (if ever) to escalate the problem to an engineering level.
Any ideas how I can get this problem resolved.

Sorry to hear you're having problems with you BT Retail Services
You will either be on the ADSLMax (upto 8mbps) service or if your exchange has been BTw 21cn upgraded you maybe on the ADSL2/2+ (upto 12/20mbps) service depending on your line quality and length.
However these upto speeds may not be the speeds you will get as ADSL broadband connections are very dependent on the distance from your property to the exchange and the quality of your line. The further away you are from your local exchange the slower your broadband speed will be.
    1) Can you please run a BT speed test (including IP Profile) http://speedtester.bt.com (not beta version)[Best done with a wired, Ethernet, connection] After Quick Test is done you need to click "Further Diagnostics" to get IP Profile.
    2) is there any noise on your line. dial 17070 option2 ,called quite line test, from landline phone. Should be silent but slight hum normal on cordless phone.
    3) please post adsl line statistics
    ADSL Line Statistic Help:
If you have a BT Home Hub like the one below...
    Then:
    1) Go to http://192.168.1.254 or http://bthomehub.home
    2) click Settings
    3) Click Advanced Settings
    4) Click Broadband
    5) Click Connection or sometimes called ADSL (see picture Below)
The direct Address is http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9116 (for bthomehub3.A firmware ending in 1.3)
or http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9118 (for bthomehub3.A firmware ending in 94.1.11)
You will need to copy and past all the adsl line statistics ( Including HEC, CRC and FEC errors). You may need to click " More Details"

    • http://192.168.0.1 for a netgear router and look for ADSL adsl statistics with information like noise margin and line attenuation, connection speed
    • http://192.168.2.1 for a belkin router and look for ADSL adsl statistics with information like noise margin and line attenuation, Data Rate
**Edit**: To me it sound like your on ADSLMax (upto 8mbps) service though your ip profile could be stuck at 2mbps but you need to supply all the above information to proceed.
    Hope thy helps,
    cheers.

in iPhoto '05 I began experiencing quits only afert opening the print dialog and then clicking on Advanced. The usual box pops up to notify Apple.
I went ahead an repaired permissions and then installed iPhoto '06. Same result. I can do books, etc. just fine. But hitting that Advanced button causes a sudden quit.
Any ideas, all? I've seen some comments, but no one really seems to have a handle on this that I can see.

Are you using OS X Mavericks? If so, you need to get your finder windows and the PSE Open window out of cover flow view. Switch to List or icon view instead.

Im browsing in my ipad then suddenly it shutsdown, any idea why?

Something went wrong in the iOS if you are getting the connect to iTunes screen. you will have to exactly that - connect your iPad to your computer's iTunes using the cable. You will need to restore the iPad now.
Read this all the way to the end before you begin. Make sure that you read about recovery mode at the end of the article.
