Sudden slowdown

I have been running fine for months and all of the sudden my throughput has died. If I go to www.giganews.com and run their bandwidth speed test with my PC directly connected to the internet ( without the WRT54G ) I get 8573 kbps. If I run the same test now using the router, I get 375 kbps.

ensure that the router is on the latest firmware .... if not , upgrade it first , reset and reconfigure ..

  • Sudden Slowdown of iMac 2.0 GHz

    Hello,
Suddenly I have noticed a quite extreme slowdown of my iMac, especially noticeable in Safari. It can take up to 10 seconds to open a new tab. Safari isn't in Rosetta mode. And I've found Finder slowed down a bit too, opening folders takes a little while. Does anyone have any idea why the iMac so suddenly experienced a slowdown. I've checked Activity Monitor and I have 300 MB unused RAM and the CPU appears to be used only around 5-10 %. Note that these checks were carried out with only Safari and no other apps running.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jonathan

Cron scripts are maintenance scrips run by OSX. To run this go into terminal and type "sudo periodic daily weekly monthly" (without quotes) and press return. Technically you should be able to do this with Onyx but i dunno as i've never used it. I'd also consider the RAM idea, make sure its seated properly and run file system check which can be done as follows.
To run OS X File System Check:
Click on Apple menu – Restart
During bootup, press and hold Command + S to startup in Single User mode
At the command prompt local host:/ root# / type the following:
    /sbin/fsck –fy
Press the Return key. This executes the File System Check and allows any repairs needed. Notice the display indicating what is being checked (HFS Plus volume, Extents Overflow file, Catalog file, multi-linked files, Catalog hierarchy, volume bit map, volume information)
If errors are found, you’ll see the message FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED. Run the File System Check command again until all errors are repaired and you see the message The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK
At the command prompt local host:/ root# / type the following:reboot
PS-the command+s key combination may differ for intel macs but i doubt it.
    Hope this helps.
Oh one more thing you may want to empty your favicon folder this is the main culprit for safari slow downs.
Go to Home/Library/Safari/Icon. Check inside for any files and trash them in fact just trash the entire folder and safari will generate a new one.(quit safari before doing this).
Personally i just set this folder to Read Only and it has helped alot. Also one more thing...lol, Safari is set to render pages at 1 second durations you can reduce to milliseconds by launching terminal and typing this command sequence:
"defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitInitialTimedLayoutDelay 0.2" (excluding quotes) (make sure you quit safari first too)
This has also been a huge improvement for me. Note u can use any value between 0 & 1 (i use 0.5)

  • Sudden slowdown of EVERYTHING.

Yesterday, my iMac suddenly s-l-o-w-e-d d-o-w-n - and opening any new programs makes the system pause for about 20 seconds and then gives me the spinning ball for about a solid minute or two. I cannot open any of my Office docs at all (but can on my MacBook - so the files aren't corrupt).
Ran Preferential Treament - but it came up with nothing.
Running ClamXav to check for viruses, but so far have come up with nothing.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm a newbie to Mac - give me a PC and I could probably figure this out, but a lot of the advice on this column is greek to me.
    Thanks!

One thing to check that is common with folks who have recently switched from Windows to a Mac.
Closing a file window does not necessarily quit the program. You need to quit the program using Command-Q or from the file menu.
The spinning beach often means that the system is swapping out memory and this often happens when their are programs open. Look at your dock and see if there are many triangles below an icon, those are open programs.
Open a handy little utility called "Activity Monitor" it is in Applications/Utilities. It will show you all sorts of good info about your system, how much memory is being used, disk activity and it will show you "page in / page outs" if there is a lot of page outs you are using a lot of RAM and the system is swapping it out. Add more RAM or close some unused programs when you using doing RAM intensive work.
Pick up a book on OSX, I like "Missing Manual" series and "Tips and Techniques"

  • Sudden slowdown from 4Mbps to 400 Kbps affecting...

Homehub reports connected at 5664Kbps as it has for a year or so. Normal throughput about 4Mbps. IP Profile 4500Kbps
Three days ago sudden drop in delivered throughput to 380Kbps. Appears to be affecting several people in the village.
Taken 48hr so far to get through the numpty layer although fault accepted on Weds.
Feeble alternate route from exchange to core routers? Planned grab of bandwidth robbing Peter to pay Paul*? Finger trouble?
(* I remember what BT used to do with inactive ISDN backup connections, but I though those days were over).

    Test 2:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 154 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 4500 Kbps
17 people in village have reported problems. Did contact mods yesterday. Fault reopened with call centre.
Based on the speed early AM, I'm guessing path from exchange to wherever it goes next - feels like we're all sharing about 2Mbps but I didn't think there were any circuits that slow these days.
Don't know enough about BT to know who claimed to have resolved it.

  • Safari 3.2.1 Sudden Slowdown

I am having similar problems to other posters here, sometimes taking 20 seconds to load a secure page from a site like ups.com. I am running OS X 10.4.11 and Safari 3.2.1. I followed Klaus1's steps; it has not improved. I also called my broadband provider Verizon FIOS and got their DNS server numbers and plugged them in. No change. Downloaded Apple Broadband Tuner, no change. This was not an issue up until about a month ago, seems like after the last security update, all of this started happening.
We replaced the router but I am confident that is not the issue, speed is 2512.3 kbps.
Plugged in my other OS 10.5.6 and Safari 3.2.1, not any better. So I am stumped. Thanks to all for their continuing help...

Copied below are the procedures I followed as outlined by Klaus1:
The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 / )
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

  • Sudden slowdown / sluggishness with FCP Capture...

I need some help troubleshooting, gang... I've tried to capture hdv footage the last two days with the same result: after going into log and capture, and hitting "capture now", there's about a minute delay with the spinning beachball before capture begins.
It is acting almost like I'm close to being out of room on the hard drive(s) but I have over 100gb on both my media drive, and the program drive. I have nothing else running, and I'm up to date with 10.4.10, fcp 6.0.1 and QT 7.2 . This is on a mac pro 2.6GHZ with 2GB of RAM. I tried capturing dv, and that does the same thing. I also tried using the internal drive to capture to rule out an issue with the external drive. Same result. I have a feeling it started with one of the updates to either fcp or QT. if anyone has had the same problem, or can send me down the troubleshooting path. that would be great.

This is happening to me today as well. Has it got something to do with 10.6.7 I have just updated and now I seem to be having the same problem

  • Sudden slowdown in CS6

I'll apologize in advance 'cause this is really nebulous..........
    Windows 7; I-920 processor; 12GB DDR3 memory; 2, Graphics:  Ati 5770; 1TB 7200 rpm drives for images; 2, 1TB 7200 rpm internal drives for backups and cache.
I have my catalog on a separate spindle in it's own partition.  Same for cache, separate spindle, partition of it's own, on a disk only used for backup, so nothing else is touching it.
CS6 has always worked fine for me.  I'm editing Nikon D300 images as .dng files,  generally loading them from Lightroom, so my usual workload is whatever's in background, Outlook, Lightroom 4.4, and Photoshop cs6.  As far as I KNOW, nothing has changed in quite some time.  CS6 is 13.0.1 X64, and I believe it's been that way for a while.
A couple weeks ago, I noticed that selecting a layer was "slow", or seemingly much slower than it had been.  For example, my usual workflow has a layer for cloning, a layer for dodging, one for burning, an adjustment layer for curves and an adjustment layer for hue/sat.  If I'm on Layer 0, and click on the Clone layer, it takes approximately 2 seconds to switch.  Clicking on the hue/sat layer takes approximately the same 2 seconds.  Previously, I know I never noticed the time to change layers, so I suspect it was
Changing tools, likewise, is significantly slower than it was previously.
In case it is/was something systemic, I checked the event logs, but I'm not throwing any errors in either the application section OR the system section.
I thought it might be a virus, so in addition to my daily run of Microsoft Security Essentials, I went to the online version of Trend Micro and had that do a full scan.  It found only a couple registry errors that weren't actually errors, just artifacts.
I went through running services and turned off anything I didn't need, and went online and shut down any I didn't want running while testing.
So far, NOTHING has made any difference.
The only thing I'm seeing, and I've always had this, Photoshop uses a LOT of memory.  At the moment, with one D300, dng file open, CS6 is using 7.75 GB of memory, an d Lightroom is using 1.8 GB.  And, I believe if I GAVE Photoshop more memory it would use it.
At present, my preferences for performance are set at:
    Available RAM:  10987 MB
    Ideal:  6043-7911
    PS Use: 8140
    History and cache are
    Tall and Thin
    Default
    Big and Flat
History States are 90 - this is down from 150, which I'd always used in the past
    Cache levels: 6 - down from 8
    Cache Tile Size: 1024K
Drawing Mode:  Advanced (I've tried both normal and advanced, and it doesn't APPEAR to affect anytyhing)
    Use Graphics Process is checked
    30-bit display is checked.
Finally, in an effort to determine if I'm REALLY seeing a problem or just crazy, I went to my laptop, an i-720, 8GB system with a much less capable video card and images, catalog, and cache all on the same spindle, opened a file and played.......
Even on the laptop, although intensive operations are slower, I have easily sub-second response time to changing tools and switching from layer to layer.  Again, either operation is virtually instantaneous.  Which tells me there's SOMETHING going on with my desktop.
So, are there settings I should look at changing or even just experiment with?  Something systemic I should look at?  Blow it all away and re-install (an UGLY option)...  Thoughts?

Trevor, as far as I can tell, there's nothing interesting taking any extraneous cycles.  And the overwhelmingly vast majority of memory use in from Photoshop.  Yes, I have multiple partitions on some spindles, but this wasn't previously a problem.  And my cache is just a folder on one of the backup drives (I thought it was a partition, but it's not)...  So, I'm not seeing anything any different than I've been seeing since I started CS6...
JJMack, I'll try purging cache.  All my disks get defragged weekly, and they all show no fragmentation.  MOST of them have a reasonable (40+%) of free space.  The only one that's full is one backup disk, and nothing cares about that except Syncback.
I just increased memory to 80% for Photoshop.  No change.  I changed the Advanced graphics processor to let Photoshhop have 90% of video memory.  No difference there either.
Windows events isn't showing any errors for anything in system.  The only thing I've got since the last reboot is informational messages.
How do I use the device manager to see what mode the disks are using?  I just checked in there and I don't see that information...
I turned off several services that I don't need or want - things like google update and some of the other junk that gets installed.  I also removed a couple programs just 'cause they weren't needed, nothing that should impact Photoshop...  So far, nothing is changing anything.
I just compared the laptop and desktop preferences, and the MUCH less capable laptop has the same settings, both for performance and advanced graphics...  The numbers are smaller, but the percentages are the same...
The ONLY thing I can think of (your comment about resetting tools made me think) was that i created a tools palette so all my tools are visible instead of having to use a right-click to see hidden ones...  I'm not sure that would or could have any effect, but I'll get rid of it and see if it changes anything.

  • Slow Crystal Reports Export to Text

Previously posted on Legacy Products forum: We have a fairly complex report written in Crystal 8 that displays
within seconds in the viewer.  A user routinely exports this report to
a text file, and until approximately three weeks ago, the export also
took less than 30 seconds.  Now the export is taking approximately
three minutes.  I have seen similar posts on this topics but no

    have caused this sudden slowdown?

    Hello,
No, we don't have support having any command line options when exporting. There are likely third party tools out there that may give you the option though.
One other way may be to export it to PDF format and then use Adobe API's to add the /E option when saving the output file.

I have 4 no of similar high end system.
3 systems are giving the result within 4 hours but one system giving result after 8 hours.
I verified the table space, indexes, system configuration and code. There are no differences.
My system performance tools saying BO and Oracle taking more time.
Oracle is giving result very fast using BO query.
So, I hope BO is having some difference.

  • I am having trouble copying files from disk to disk, help.

I have a Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 running Tiger 10.4.3. I am having a problem copying files since I installed Tiger. I am trying to copy from drive "LaCie d2 195 GB", this is a Firewire 800 external drive, to drive "250GB HD", this is an internal drive. The folder that I am having trouble with this morning has 16 PhotoShop files inside of it, it is 768.5 MB. I get this message:
The finder canot comlete the opperation because some data in "Black Valve 3.psd" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)
I tried to open the file in PhotoShop and it would not open, I had to force quit PhotoShop twice to make PhotoShop to close. I opened a copy of the same file with PhotoShop, that was in another folder on drive "250GB HD" and replaced the file on drive "LaCie d2 195 GB". I opened the newly saved file from drive "LaCie d2 195 GB" with PhotoShop with no problem.
To test the time needed I coppied the same folder from "250GB HD" to my startup drive in 48 seconds. Next I copied the folder a second time from "LaCie d2 195 GB" to the "250GB HD", it took 10 minutes and 54 seconds.
My question is do you think the drive is bad or might I reformat "LaCie d2 195 GB" and make it work better?

Error code -36 is an i/o error. That usually means that the computer is having a problem reading or writing the file you're working with, which in turn usually means that the drive has a problem. A sudden slowdown of the magnitude you meantion usually means a severely damaged directory or physical damage to the disk. I'd run a disk fixer such as Disk Utility or Disk Warrior on the slow drive. If it reports problems which can't be fixed, which I suspect it will, I'd back everything up. I just had a LaCie 250GB drive die on me with similar problems (i/o errors, very slow access) and returned it under the warranty.

  • Time for a new HDD?

Just looking for some verification of my suspicions with my MBP.  About two days ago I noticed my browser was sluggish, but just thought it was a network issue.  Last night, basically every click resulted in a beach ball.  On a restart, jt took a good five minutes to get to log in and the same awful performance.
I verified the disk and it said it needed repair.  So I start pulling files off and attempted to do a Superduper clone, but that hung up.  I did manage to get a Time Machine backup done overnight and it was actually running Ok this AM after leaving it on overnight.   Gave me a chance to copy more individual files. Ran disk utility off the cd drive and tried a repair which failed.
The quick hardware test says everything is fine.  Im running the long one now.
So between my year old clone (I know, not very diligent with backup), recent Time Machine backup and just copying docs and media, I think I'm prepared to recover at this point (just hope I have my MS Office key).
My question is if this sounds like a hard dive that is ready to call it quits.  I cant recall any new software or anything significant I've done recently that would have screwed up the disk on the software side.  Trying to avoid wasting time on setting things back up just to have it fail.  Sorry for any typos or missing punctuation, typing long form on an iPad really is terrible.
Computer is a 15" MBP i7.  About 3 years old now, but i guess they do t make hard drives like they used to.  As evidenced by the OEMs cutting their warranties.  Never had a drive fail when I had PCs and this was my first Mac, so I'm not sure what else to check.

Good move in backing up your Mac.  As you noted you shoud have a current backup at all times anyway.
First, disks are disks and they fail at the same rate in Macs and PCs.  It is not yet clear that yours is failing, but it could be.  Let's assume it is the disk or the filesystem and proceed with that.  If it is not, then it could be incompatible software causing the issue.
With a sudden slowdown, if you have not changed any software, the disk is a prime suspect.  To check this issue run Disk Utiity (from the Applications > Utilities folder).
Click on the upper left disk name and see if the S.M.A.R.T. status says "Verified".  If it doesn't then the hard drive is indeed failing.  Stop there and report back.
Click on Verify Disk and report back any error message in red or that if finished normally with an green OK message.
Then click on the volume icon (indented below the disk icon, usually called "Macintosh HD").  Click on Verify Disk again and again report any red error messages or the it finished with a green OK message.
If it did not finish normally it will instruct you to boot from the recovery partition and repair the disk from there.
Boot from the recovery partition, start Disk Utility, and repair this disk.
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DU6.html
If this cured the problem then see if it boots and runs OK.  If not reïnstall OS X.
Select Reïnstall OS X, then click Continue.
Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select a disk, select your current OS X disk (in most cases, it’s the only one available).
If that did not fix the problem then it is probably a software issue.

  • Super sluggish iMac G4

A few days ago, my iMac became weirdly sluggish. For example, webpages are taking 15-20 seconds to render, programs take a minute or two to open (while the icon is bouncing in the dock), files take a long time to copy to a new folder, etc.
Starting up from the CDs and running Disk Utility showed no problems, although it took a long time to process the hard drive.
I've also tried resetting the pram, which did nothing.
Any sugestions would be appreciated, thanks!

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Could you please single click on Macintosh HD and then choose Get Info from the File Menu. Please post back with the Capacity, Available and Used values.
It's my experience that the most common cause of a sudden slowdown where nothing appears to have changed is the lack of free hard disk space.
Any OS needs room to breathe and you should leave about 15% of your total free.

This has been an issue for a while. Every time a new page is loaded, the airport does a scanning and eventually the page will load. This also causes some issues with ichat or YIM and server access.
Not sure if it hardware or software

    Welcome to the discussions!
Don't know what could have happened to produce the sudden slowdown. Wireless interference from a new network in the area? New cordless phone? New security system at the neighbors? Aging AirPort Express?
If you've tried a "hard reset", this does not erase all of the settings on the AirPort Express, so it might be worth a try to do a Factory Default Reset. Then you start fresh with new out-of-the-box settings.
    Pull the Express from power
Hold in the reset button +and keep holding it in+ as you plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after 8-10 seconds
If you still have problems download Air Radar and use its Scan function at the lower right of the main window to get a look at all of the "visible" networks in your area.
Air Radar is not free, but there is a free trial period. If you see any other network on a close adjacent channel, change the channel on your wireless to a setting that is as far away as possible.

  • 5th generation AEBS not working on 2.4, but 5 network works great.

So...for 3 months, I had a very successfully connected AEBS.  I had a working and viable 2.4 GHz network running 2 iphone 4s and 2 wireless printers.  The working and viable 5 GHz network was successfully running 5 computers, 2 ipad2s and any other guest computer that would happen to stop by.
Then..one day (3 days ago), the 2.4 GHz network just stopped connecting.  The printers wouldn't work and the iphones would say that it was connected, but still operatine on 3G..then just lose the network completely and say that it was 'unable to join the xxxx Network'.
I paid $49 for apple phone support that basically had me completely reset the settings back to factory default and reconfigure..and it worked...for maybe an hour.  Then the phones dropped connection, the wireless printers never worked.  And on and on.
My genius appointment was today and the apple genius gave me a brand new AEBS..I saw him open the box..it wasn't repair stock..he took it off the shelf.  He claimed the 2.4 GHz antenna was bad and a new one would solve the problem.
I reset eveything up today....same problems.
the 5Ghz network is running fine...brilliantly.  All ipads and computers work like a charm.
I am connected through a Uverse 2 wire box..but as I said, I had a perfectly working system for about 3 months.
Just for kicks and grins, I rebooted the 2 wire box..stil no luck.
I am hoping that someone here in this vast universe of knowledge has an idea of what may be wrong...it's driving us crazy.
    Thanks in advance.

Chances are....about 3 days ago....someone near you added a new Wi-Fi setup at their house, a wireless camera/security system, or even a new cordless phone setup.
One of these devices, or another electronics device like a satellite receiver, television, etc., is interfering with the the 2.4 GHz band on your network. Unfortunately, this is a common problem with the 2.4 GHz band due to severe overcrowding of wireless networks.
For example, a few years ago, my wireless network, which was 2.4 GHz only at the time, started suffering from intermittent sudden slowdowns and complete disconnections. I tried, but could not locate a source of the interference...even changed the cordless phones to other models that did not operate on 2.4 GHz, as most cordless phones do. Changed channels, tried a different router...same problem.
One day as I was working at my desk, I noticed my neighbor....across the street....coming out of his house talking on his cordless phone, when my network speed suddenly dropped to a crawl. By the time he got to the street to his mailbox, my network crashed.
Fortunately, my neighbor is a good friend and he usually remembers to keep his cordless phone inside. When he forgets, I know exactly where he is and what he is doing....without having to even look out the window.
For more information about wireless interference, you might want to read the Apple Support document on the subject:
