Suggestion: A General Feedback Thread

May I kindly suggest a general thread for feedback on Apple users' experiences? i.e. a place where we will be able to share our pleasant experiences and how we are able to help improve the users' experiences.

I think TU's have access to the front page news.  It's on the dev dashboard but I've never had a reason to edit it so I've never tried.
The front page news is used to warn about breakage and other general nastiness that would perturb an otherwise smooth upgrade but not everyone will agree on what merits mention on that page. A forum thread take less effort to update and would probably have a lower threshold for matters of disputable importance.
My point though is that major breakage (big problems, affects many users) will be reported on the front page. Problems which are less severe or less widespread will appear on the forums in threads about the issue which will also contain suggestions and solutions. The whole point of your suggestion is to make people aware of pending issues and I believe that the current system does this. You should check the front page before updating anything important and you should take a quick peek at the forum. Any issue that is likely to affect you will have affected others and the related thread(s) will be relatively active and apparent.
Thinking about it more though it would essentially be a news aggregator. It would be possible to subscribe to the topic and receive emails notifications. It would also be possible keep a clear record of issues for anyone arriving after the fact.
Meh, overall I see the benefits but I don't know if they're worth it. It amounts to maintaining a sign with all the newspaper headlines right next to the news stand where you can read all of the headlines directly. It might be a bit more visible from a distance and let some random passer-by know what the big issue of the day is, but at the same time anyone who actually cares would have come by to read it first-hand.
You also have to consider that this has the air of novelty and that's usually frowned upon in established settings.
*withdraws any opinion he  may have given and sits down to see where this goes*

  • On Placing Text - General Feedback and Experience Request

    Hi everyone.
Recently I completed a Kindle book made through InDesign, containing some 130 images and over 40,000 words. When I typed the book, I did so using MS Word largely because I wanted automatic management of citations, which I did using a Zotero plugin. The writing process was as good as any writing process could ever be, but once I began placing the text (as a Word document) into InDesign, I quickly experienced the "love-hate" relationship described by David Blatner in one of his courses.
I suffered a tremendous amount of trouble when placing the Word docs into InDesign. After I completed the book and placed it into InDesign, and then formatted it properly for ePub, the Table of Contents would not generate. Each time I attempted to generate the TOC, InDesign crashed. Eventually I grew tired of that experience so I pasted all of the Word text into Notepad++, saved a new file as a plain text file, and then copied and pasted the plain text into InDesign and then manually reformatted the entire book, replacing each individual image.
The result of my labor was an InDesign book with clean code that exported to ePub without any trouble at all. So I'm very happy that I was able to complete the project.
Now, I need to do it again, so I wanted to ask for your general feedback on your experience of placing text into InDesign.
Is there a special way you have developed to keep everything as clean as possible to reduce the chances of unexpected problems from occuring?
I can write a book using Apache Open Office as easily as I can Word. If I use Apache Open Office and save the book to RTF and place it, would I get a cleaner InDesign file than if I saved and placed the RTF using Word?
I'm just seeking general feedback that may help ease my future workload.
    Thanks

We often get word files to be "converted" to Indesign (now CC for us but in Windows). We have a macro running which converts lots of styles to char styles (italic, bold ...) before importing.
We have a template made in CC and afterwards exported it as rtf. We saved that rft as a word-template. This template works fine, but many of the "special feature" of Word cause problems, mainly because either ID doesn't recognize the code, or ID makes something else for it. Clearing this isn't simple, if it's a short story, we convert all the text to a basic para style (no grep styles, no nested styles), getting rid of all the "overrides", and start by manually reformatting.
My advice: if you start from scratch, use ID from the start, maybe some "things" will be more difficult, but as you put it, if you have to start all over again, it didn't help a lot typing the text in "word" first.

  • General feedback for Adobe

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but I looked for a place to send general "feedback" and could not find one.
I just wanted to let the management at Adobe know a couple things related to recent Public Relations blunders. Ever since the announcment that you were ending Flash Player for Mobile, I have had many conversations with people about this topic and there is SO much misinformation due to your announcement, it's going to tank Flash as a broader platform.
I've had people say to me :
    - Some think Flash doesn't work on Macs
    - Some think the Flash player is cancelled on ALL platforms (PC included)
    - Some think Flash in its entirety is coming to an end.
This perception seems to come from people of various levels of technical knowledge, from basic users where it's understandable they might be confused about the specifics of the recent news (but still not a good thing!) on up to key decision makers who don't know tech but are key to making certain spending decisions with regard to tech platforms (CEOs).
This is a horrible place for Flash to be in right now and you need to quickly change the perception with a "Flash is alive and well" type of announcement.
Remember, most people only retain sound bites and a few words from headlines. You may have announced "Adobe ends Flash Player for Mobile" originally, but what people retained was "Adobe ends Flash Player". You need to make a new announcement that the short attention span people will come away from with knowledge that all is well. "Flash not dead" for example.
Man, whoever plans your PR needs to be fired. You could have killed off the Mobile player back before the MAX conference and then followed up with the news about Flash Player 11 and Stage 3D. That would have a perfect one-two punch, but instead you reversed it and all the excitement from FP11 @ MAX was blown away.

you need to quickly change the perception with a "Flash is alive and well" type of announcement.
I just had to go back to a customer:   "...remember that detailed proposal about how we could create a sales automation app, and have it run native on your mobiles, as well as your desktops and website, and....  uhhhh, never mind."
I can almost predict future conversations with Customers,   Customer says:  "Flash????  Isn't that what Adobe dropped?!?!?  That's what you want to build my app on!?!?!"   Customer is thinking:  "How can I get rid of this guy...  now where did I put that card for the other developer....."
I don't think any amount of PR is going to help at this point. Adobe has all but admitted that the future of development is browser based.  Mobile is where the lion's share of development is right now, and at the very least, it needs to be an option.   Flash was already starting to be a harder sell, and now it is going to be impossible.  So, for all practical purposes, Flash might as well be dead.

  • Feedback Thread: Firmware MU02 for BX100

Please use this thread to provide any feedback for firmware MU02 for BX100.
Firmware revision MU02 for the Crucial BX100 (all form factors) is now available. This firmware update applies to the BX100 SSD (all form factors), and should not be applied to any other Crucial SSD model.
Visit this page to download the firmware update: http://www.crucial.com/support/firmware.aspx
    Release Date: 04/14/2015
Firmware for the BX100 (all form factors) is being updated from version MU01 to MU02. The BX100 is updateable to this new firmware starting from previous versions using tools provided by Micron.
This update will be mandatory cut-in for new product built in Micron factories, and is an OPTIONAL update for any drive in the field. For end users, it is recommended if the user is experiencing or wishes to prevent an issue related to the following items.
Version MU02 includes the following changes:
•Improved Device Sleep and Slumber transitions.
    •Corrected SMART attribute threshold values.
    •Improved general reliability and stability.
Additional details can be found in the firmware guide

I think that right now there are 3 ways firmware update can theoretically be done:
    1. Online update through Crucial Storage Executive - the proper firmware file is downloaded by Storage Executive from Crucial/micron server
    2. With Bootable ISO image provided by Crucial < the one you can download from firmware download page
    3. Manual Firmware Update through Crucial Storage Executive - you load the .zip file with firmware update package
I believe that the problem with "3" is that Crucial does not provide .zip files with firmware update packages. The .zip files we can download contains bootable ISO images, not the firmware update packages. Because of that you are probably right that this option should be removed from Storage Executive's UI.
I think that, technically, within the same firmware revision, updating with the firmware package would be the same as an online update where the firmware file is downloaded by Storage Executive from micron server.
If the Storage Executive didnt' work for you I would suggest trying manual Bootable ISO, take a look at post #6.

Hi everybody! Just downloaded MU02 Update, create a bootable CD from the ISO file, tried to boot my MacBook Pro 17" Mid 2010 with the created CD. After loading it automatically started programming... After some time I got the following message: "Firmware Update on /dev/sda failed with status 13... Device Name: /dev/sdaFirmware Update on /dev/sda Failed!CMD_STATUS: Command aborted by the driveSTATUS_CODE: 13Your system will now return to normal operation following a reboot" I thought that the CD is damaged. Took another CD and created another bootable CD. Got the same error. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance for your suggestions...I haven't tried this as I'm using a different model of Macbook Pro and I'm not running a M550. But it seems that Crucial have made a major change from previous firmware updates for M4 and M500 SSDs. In the past they used a SYSLINUX/ISOLINUX bootloader which in turn used memdisk to load a FreeDOS image which contained FreeDOS and the actual firmware updater. This meant that if the CDROM installer didn't work, or the Mac didn't have a CDROM, there were no other options. This method never worked properly for EFI booting from USB in a Mac, although some "hacks" were suggested in forum posts that worked for some people. However it seems that now Crucial are using a different method. If we take a look at /boot/isolinux/isolinux.cfg DEFAULT sd
    LABEL sd
    KERNEL /boot/vmlinuz
    INITRD /boot/core.gz
APPEND quiet base loglevel=3 waitusb=10 superuser rssd-fw-update rssd-fwdir=/opt/firmware rssd-model=M550This means it loads an actual linux kernel - vmlinuz. Now it should be possible to modify isolinux.cfg to change the kernel arguments to work better with the actual Mac hardware or any other hardware that is supported by linux. It should be possible to build a EFI bootable USB updater that loads the same kernel and firmware, but we can modify that with all the correct parameters for the Mac. Unfortunately I don't have the same model Mac or the same SSD, so while I might have a look at making the EFI bootable installer, I can't test the complete firmware update process.

I have just published a RIG How To Guide called [How To Design a SAP NetWeaver - Based System Landscape|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/50a9952d-15cc-2a10-84a9-fd9184f35366].  You can read my [blog |http://www.sdn.sap.com/?blog=/cs/weblog/view/wlg/8877]on it.  This thread is collect feedback and discussion on the Guide.

    Hi Matt!
This is definitely interesting reading and a lot of projects I've been in could have benefitted from it had it been carefully read beforehand by some of the involved parties.
What I like especially is the fact that this is not only for technical consultants (who should know about most of these things anyway) but for the people closer to the business who need to find agreements with the technical guys.
    Good job...
    Jörg
Some comments to what I read:
I noticed that you use the term 'server virtualization' (section 3.3.1) quite generally. Maybe it would be worth introducing the term 'server consolidation' (which you use later in the document)  already in this early chapter. My experience shows that (especially recently) a lot of customers are interested in 'virtual servers' (meaning a virtual server with an OS installed separately), not really knowing what they're talking about and often better advised to use 'server consolidation' (one OS, many SIDs). These two concepts are similar in terms of sharing hardware resources, but quite different in terms of the implications toward administration.
In section 4.2.1.3 you mention (in brackets) the Usage type to which the client belongs for the Business Explorer  and the J2SE Adapter Engine if I understood that correctly. There is no UT mentioned for the other clients and there is no explanation on what the bits in brackets are supposed to mean. (I first expected the 'BeX' abbreviation when I saw something in brackets...)

Hello, in case of the Intel X79 chipset, which has a SATA controller of the C600 workstation chipset integrated it is impossible to install the firmware ...with my PCIe Addon-Card with USB3 (Renesas) / SATA6 (Marvell) it is impossible, too; I don't use Win7 so I must use the .iso for update ... any suggestion please; does onybody know why the SSD after only 1 day shows a HD tune like this: what has happened, I installed it, made a partition and copies about 100 GB of my virtual machines; and had them run for about 16 hours:- one is only a private WINS server (WinNT 4.0)- one is my private DNS server (2.5 GByte vmdk)- one is my sixxs tunnel provider (4 GByte vmdk)- one is my personal old proxy (squid 2.5) (10 GByte vmdk)- one is my personal new ssl-bump proxy (squid 3.3) (8 GByte vmdk)- one is my personal mail server (Postfix/Cyrus) (16 GByte vmdk)and a few more but not every did run at all ...  [ speed doesn't really matter, because this SSD is connected not at the onboard SATA controller - X79/C600; I connected it on a PCIe Addon controller that has additional external USB 3 ports (Renesas) and additional SATA 6 ports (Marvell) ]the firmware update was done on another PC with Intel Z77 chipset; but next time I'd would like to do this without the need of another PC .- the support of the Marvell controller would be fine; Thanks,Walter

  • My feedback thread

I started working on my personal portfolio website today with Reflow, so this thread is dedicated to everything that I find unintuitive in Reflow or feature requests I would like to see implemented.
    Font Aliasing is really bad.
    I miss a zoom tool!
Shortcuts to change leading, tracking, etc. just like in InDesign would be much appreciated!
Being able to scale elements by dragging with the selection tool would be nice - maybe use a dedicated scale tool.
Re-Arranging the DOM in the inspector would be great. Currently there is no way to re-arrange it?
Elements align differently if you have images embedded. I tried positioning menu buttons with a pixel margin-left. But with images included they had the marging always aligned relative to the image(s) - why? This made the menu scale totally wrong on a rescale of the viewport, because some of the menu button margins are aligned relative to some image, that doesn't relate to the menu at all.
Ability to choose all fonts on your system.
Ability to choose all fonts from Typekit (you are allowed to use with your Adobe account).
Select multiple elements and change their units from % to px or any other unit. Currently you have to select each element seperately - takes a lot of time just for four elements.
    Guidelines and Smart Guides.
Dragging with shift should lock horizontally and vertically.
    Enable copy & paste.
Automatically switch to styling (Tab) when selecting text (not the box itself). Obviously I want to edit text properties when I select it.
Selecting multiple elements and dragging them only moves one element. Should drag all of them. Only workaround at the moment is by grouping them together.
Grouping has no visual indicator that elements are grouped.
Double-click on a group to get the seperate elements like in InDesign would be nice.
In the media query bar show the exact pixel width. You can't be 100% sure if you are at 950 or 952 or 951. Also, a numerical input field would be appreciated. I know you can drag around the corresponding media query, but you have to be very precise to match the right width.
Ctrl drag over a input to use a slider, just like in Photoshop. Changing values takes too much time for fast design prototyping.
Ability to insert media query dependent line breaks. That is very important, because Reflow is intended to design the responsive web. Although not everyone takes the effort for every project to assign different line breaks for every media query, some do for very important projects - like in my case the portfolio, which just has very few text, which is why optimization with line breaks is possible.
Match height/width always takes the biggest width. It should take either the first selected one's, the last selected one's, or an active one like in Illustrator.
The ability to scale elements proportionally would be nice. For example, I have a row of four navigation buttons. As soon as I reach a too small media query I want to scale them proportionally. I assign a percent width so they scale to fit as much as possible, but their height stays the same. Having an option to scale the height in proportion would be nice. I know you can almost 100% simulate this with paddings on your text and setting your outer element to height:auto; but it's not a 100% match of proportional scaling.
Scaling with the alt key should scale around the center point.

Thank you very much for your feedback. Will comment inline.
Font Aliasing is really bad. We leverage Chrome itself for the application design surface so all fonts should identical to Chrome on your desktop.
I miss a zoom tool!  Bottom right corner (canvas zoom) not sufficient?

Visit this page to download the firmware update: http://www.crucial.com/support/firmware.aspx
    Release Date: 03/10/2015
Firmware for the MX100 (all form factors) is being updated from version MU01 to MU02. The MX100 is updateable to this new firmware starting from previous versions using tools provided by Micron.
This update will be mandatory cut-in for new product built in Micron factories, and is an OPTIONAL update for any drive in the field. For end users, it is recommended if the user is experiencing or wishes to prevent an issue related to the following items.
Version MU02 includes the following changes:
Improved stability, Efficiency, and Performance during power state transitions
Improved handling of environments with unstable power supplies
Improved handling of environments with SATA interface signal integrity issues
Improved response time for SMART read commands
Corrected error handling NCQ Trim Commands
Corrected reporting of SMART Attribute 5
Additional details can be found in the firmware guide.

Will this  firmware be available soon in the Crucial  Storage Executive program? When I do a check firmware upgrade, it tells me I am on the latest firmware and do not see any downloads for JUST the firmware update file that i can then install manually via Storage Executive. I have the latest Crucial Storage Executive program installed and a 256GB MX100 on MU01. Also on a nitpicky note, there should be an Close, X in the upper right of the Storage Excecutive program for closing the program; having to close via right-click and close on taskbar or ALT+F4 is not very good software design practices.

  • Eezdownloads virus found. None of the suggested fixes in other threads has fixed it.

I got the eezdownloads virus by accidentally typing a .com instead of .net at the end of a URL. I have tried all the fixes in the other threads about this virus, but nothing works.
Started by running ClamX AV. It found an .emix file. I trashed it and emptied the trash. Per the other threads, I then quit Safari (and I've Force Quit too, even though I didn't need to) and restarted holding the Shift key. The pop-up page comes right back. I've rebooted the computer many times to no avail. I have also run AdwareMedic as suggested in one thread. It found two files and I trashed them and emptied the trash. The problem persists, even after multiple reboots.
I can't delete and reinstall Safari because the computer won't allow it. Everything in Safari is greyed out, so I can't get into Preferences to reset Safari or do anything else. Any advice?

It's not a virus. It's a JavaScript scam that only affects your web browser, and only temporarily. There are several ways to recover.
    1. Some of those scam pages can be dismissed very easily. Press the key combination command-W to close the tab or window. A huge box will pop up. Press the return key and both the box and the page will close. If that doesn't happen, continue.
    2. Press and hold command-W. You may hear repeating alert sounds. While holding the keys, click the OK button in the popup. A different popup may appear, which you can cancel out of as usual.
    3. From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
and uncheck the box marked Enable JavaScript. Leave the preferences dialog open.
Close the malicious window or tab.
Re-enable JavaScript and close the preferences dialog.
    4. If the Preferences menu item is grayed out, quit Safari. Force quit if necessary. Relaunch it by holding down the shift key and clicking its icon in the Dock. None of the windows and tabs will reopen.
After closing the malicious page, from the menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
to get rid of any cookies or other data left by the server. Open your Downloads folder and delete anything you don't recognize.

  • ITunes DJ suggestion (looking for feedback)

Firstly, I HAVE sent this in as a suggestion already, but I am looking for feedback and suggestions from any of you to improve this.
I just got into using iTunes DJ, and I think it is great. The only problem I have is the lack of simplicity to request songs. Not dealing with the wireless aspect (iPhones), DJ seems like it could be simplified rather than searching around different sections of iTunes, right clicking, dragging/dropping, whatever. This problem can arise when you are using this application for a party, and just anyone can walk up to request a song. Not everyone will know how it works, so they could easily search around and accidentally double click a song, defeating the purpose of DJ. Instead, why not just have a "view browser" option inside DJ, but with a few tweaks to go along with this specific application. The main change would be viewing "songs" in the browser along with "artist", "album", etc. Another difference, would be that these songs cannot be double clicked in order to solve the double clicking issue. Once the song is selected, there is a "request" button that, once pushed, it goes right into the queue just like any other meathod. This route, there is no leaving DJ. It can always stay right on the same page. Now, while some might not run into these kind of problems, it will still streamline the request feature a lot smoother for everyone. Lastly, Since DJ can have a selected source, such as a specific playlist, the browser should have one as well. This would be nice if you want to allow your guests to select any song, but have the main source of DJ play from a certain playlist. I have taken the liberty to edit a quick version of what I think it could look like. I would appreciate any feedback.
Oh, and i thought of a random button as well, but didnt know what it should look like or how it would work specifically.

I can post a higher quality if needed.

I thought I might give some updated information based on my current findings. It seems like it is actually a proximatey problem. Taking my computer closer to the unit seems to resolve the problem, but it is definately not out of range where I was trying to transmit from. I was still getting almost a full signal. Has anyone else had the same problem with the range not being very good?

  • The *Football* General Discussion Thread Part deux

I may of killed the old thread by accident so please use this thread for all your football banter throughout the season.
I guess I will start then lol
Cor, Ryan Giggs, you know? Giggsy, isn't it? Mmm? Giggsy-wiggsy? Mmm? Oh! Ryan-y Giggsy-wiggsy. Isn't it? You know, marvellous.
Is George Best the old Ryan Giggs? But Giggsy-wiggsy. Precocious talent, isn't he? Mmm? Ooh, got it all, you know? Speed, acceleration, sweet left foot, all the tricks - the dummy, the drop of the shoulder, the shimmy, nutmeg, jiggery-pokery, hocus pocus, abracadabra, I wanna reach out and grab ya. Steve Miller Band? Spin Doctors? Ooh, very similar.
Diamond formation? Does anyone really know what that is? I mean, at least you knew where you were with Alf Ramsey's wingless wonders. You know? 4-4-2, 4-2-4, 4-3-3... 0898 654000, freephone double glazing?
Oh, those Brazilians, you know? Circa 1970? Broke the mould. Theory out the window. Free expression of football. Uncategorisable. Is that a word? It is now! You know? Far cry from small boys in the park, jumpers for goalposts. Rush goalie. Two at the back, three in the middle, four up front, one's gone home for his tea. Beans on toast? Possibly, don't quote me on that. Marvellous.

Apparently Alex Song is pretty much on his way out. What is happening to my team At this rate Arsenal will have an entirely new spine to their team as it used to be Szczesny, Vermaelen, Song, RVP. Now it's looking like Szczesny, Vermaelen, M'Villa (?) and Podolski. I'm not sure how I feel about it. Definitely more worried about losing Song than RVP though  Maybe it'll do us good, we'll win the title (or any cup for that matter ) RVP will feel like a total mug and United won't win anything this season, again.  If that happened my level of joy would be on par with the invincibles season This is the first season in a long time I've felt confident about a cup. But that was before the Song rumour. Also another rumour that's interesting is the Spanish international Llorente. Although that one is a little less likely I think. And even less likely is the silly Hernandez to Arsenal rumour. While it'd probably be better for him, I can't see Fergie letting him go like that.

  • TU Go for Web BETA trial - Feedback thread

    Hi guys,
The TU Go have launched a new web-based version of TU Go as part of a\ BETA trial that you can get involved in.
All you need to do is log onto https://go.tu.com/#/ via your browser* and sign in as you would when using the app. You can even sign up to TU Go there too if you have not already and find out more about TU Go Explore; A new project that allows members like you to more easily report feedback on upcoming updates.
This thread is here for you to feedback on the new version and let us know how its working for you.
    Some more info here
*TU Go for Web will work Google Chrome, FireFox and Opera browsers for now

Great idea poorly implemented! I'm not sure why I'd ever want to see five conversations side by side, but I do know that I'd like a "delete" button, and I'd like a "help" page which explains the cute but meaningless colour coding of the icons. (How about an option for using "words" rather than icons!) (I mean a real "Help" page - not a link to the useless page on the O2 web site which just tells you all the things you already know about TuGo before you install it!) I'd like to be able to select multiple messages and calls, and delete them at once - but you can't do that on the app, so why would I expect it on the web version. I'd like "hover" text which explains what buttons do (isn't that essential for "disability friendly" web sites?) I'd like to sort my texts according to the sender, or do a "find" for a particular contact or number, rather than have this long list of mixed calls and texts down the left hand side of the screen. Apparently TuGo doesn't work on IE11 because of the "advanced connectivity" that TuGo requires!! They're having a laugh, right? I'm still looking for any signs of "advanced connectivity", but all I see is a fairly basic website - maybe Chrome hides the advanced features?? Like the Windows Desktop App, and the Windows Mobile App (and I can't imagine the iOS versions are very different), the web version is a great idea, poorly executed. Have the developers ever bothered to sit down with a group of "first time" users to see how easy they find TuGo to use? I doubt it very much! TuGo has fantastic potential as a really useful add on for O2 customers, but every time I use it (and I've now used it on iPad, phone, desktop App and browser based App), it leaves me frustrated. If it wasn't for the fact that sometimes it pulls me out of a hole (WiFi available when there's no mobile signal!), I'd never ever use it.

  • General feedback about Nokia's philosophy

I haven't found any e-mailadress for feedback from normal costumers. However, I guess it's always interesting to know the reason when a costumer decides not to buy new Nokia devices any more. I also like to publish my feedback in public so others can comment, agree or disagree.
In the past I was always buying recent Nokia phones, I wasn't really totally satisfied but Nokia was the best for me. Even when I had my 6230i I already knew that the software is artificially loocked up. The hardware was and is actually capable to produce more then it does because of software limitations. I always thought it's a shame that phones are artificially loocked up and not like PC where you can change the operating system at no risk to brick the hardware.
Nokia has really great success in protecting their intelecutal property (software, firmware). Other devices such as from the vendor HTC haven't had so much success in loocking up the platform (maybe it also wasn't high on their prioritiy list).
Nokia hasn't ever really updated the software of any device (only firmware bugfixes, but not from feature pack 1 to feature pack 2 or so). If I want to have a higher software version, I have to buy a new phone, that ridiculous.
I could say okay, Nokia has published Symbian now as Open Source. But will any old Symbian devices ever get updated? Do I actually profit from the big and active Open Source communit contributing? No. Actually Nokia only takes the cream topping for itself. It's not going to be a truly open platform.
Other devices, already 4 years or older got recently operating system updates by a big fan community. The devices are now able to run Windows Mobile 6.5 or even Andoid 2.1. It's a shame the producer of the device hasn't provided an updated operating system itself. But Nokias even bigger shame is that their job in locking up the platform was perfect.
Nokia must have recognized that Nokia still has a big fan community. They always find a way to hack the firmware, so they can play arround with it. I am taling about things like HelloOX and ROMPatcher. But what is Nokia doing? They always give nothing about them, patch the hole and make the firmware unhackable again. They hacked it for a reason, not for fun.
I mean, I bought the phone. Why I am not allowed to get the maximum out of the hardware? Why Nokia is trying to limit me? Are the protected rights, the goals of it more worth then satified costumers buying a new device again?
Nokia should rather open the platform. Include methods to protect the hardware from being bricked by bogous operating system upgrades and the ability to go always easly back to an original firmware. Just like PC, where you hardly brick anthing beside the BIOS update (which is also only a conteptual and not a technical problem).
I am not talking about how I feel about the new free Ovi Maps, just for some devices while others have to pay.
Yes... Nokia wants to sell more devices. Want me to buy new deices. That's why they act like they do. But whats happening that I am looking for alternatives.
There is no vendor with a fair updating policy. None is going to tell you exactly for how long or to which version the operating system is going to be updated. There is only one truly open platform, the OpenMoko devices. To bad that it looks they haven't had too much success. But there are vendors which have more or less open platforms.
I think at some day phones hardware will be like PC hardware. You still buy the phone preinstalled with a default operating system, but you can choose an update your operating system later anyway. The phone vendors are just slowing down the process, but not stopping.

Hacking is not allowed for your own protection. If you do hack it, Nokia waives full responsibility. That's just it. Hack at your own risk.
Nothing further I can say as discussion on such is not allowed here. We could discuss it on some other place, but on these boards.
