SuperDrive woes - simple $40 fix.

Well along with many people on this board, I got the same SuperDrive problems in my iMac G4, and it couldn't of come in a wronger time - the day before I was going to sell it. I tried EVERYTHING suggested on this board and nothing worked (upgrading firmware, resetting PRAM, reformatting HD, etc.). nada
I was extremely frustrated, so it came down to replacing it. I did some researching and found this drive: the NEC 3550, for $37! (16x dual layer dvd burner). Here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152058 . No tax, and $2 shipping.
Now here comes to the point where you can spend $40 or spend more, you need to install this thing for your self. I would have to say for a person who has only self-installed new RAM in a computer, installing the drive was realtively easy. Of course, I had to use the service manual (don't attempt this without it), I don't have a link for it, but look around. Once you get the actual computer open, you unplug two plugs, thn you just remove a thin metal shield, then remove the hard drive/ cd drive carrier. Once you've done that you just unscrew the cd drive carrier and unplug it and its out. Put your new one in and seal it back up.
Important notice if you are going to do this: when you get the drive, remove the front plastic part (the part with the eject button), just pull it off. Second, you need to set the drive to SLAVE mode, otherwise the iMac will see the CD drive as the hard drive. This is accomplished by going to the 6 pinned box, pulling out the pin, and instead of having it on the right, put it in the middle. Once this is done, you have you're drive back working great.

Sorry, really simple and possibly quite stupid question,
but....
When navigating my site (test site, only on local host) using
the spry accordion I'm having trouble making the menu remain open
on the link that corresponds with curent page. ie I've clicked
downloads link and opened downloads page, but spry menu reverts to
original state and shows options for my home page/index. This
obviously needs to show options for the page I'm on (downloads).
I did read somewhere that you can mark the menu to open on
whatever section you want, but this would mean altering the code
for each page.
I am sure I have just probably deleted the code at the
beggining and need some advice on how to fix.

This is expected behavior for the Accordion panel, by default
they show the first panel, unless you "tell" them otherwise. You
can set the spefiic panel on a page by page basis, but not ideal,
but workable, dpeneding on the number of pages to work with. You
can also cause a specific panel to open up fairly easily based upon
query string parameters. See the last example on this page:

IDEA 4 SIMPLE FIRMWARE FIX FOR BROKEN HOME BUTTONS!! SEND TO APPLE FEEDBACK

Apple, as you know many people have had problems with their home buttons on their ipod touches and iphones. I have figured out a simple fix to broken home buttons. Release a new firmware that makes it so if you double click the power button twice in quick succession it does the same as clicking the home button.I have never heard of people having trouble with their power button so this would be perfect. Please make this happen.

Macbook Pro 1.83ghz Woes - continiously being fixed - never working :(

I have a Macbook Pro 1.83Ghz Intel Core Duo - with lots of problems.
Back in November, it had problems with the Fans making a clunking / grinding noise and - the fans were replaced as well as the LogicBoard... This worked for up until a few weeks ago and then the right fan started playing up with the same issue and MBP was getting extremely hot - fans were running at 6-7000 RPM - even though iStat Pro isn't completely accurate - it was showing the .c temperature running at 85 degrees centigrade - pretty hot!!!
So 3wks ago, the right hand fan was replaced as well as temperature sensor on the Logicboard. Once fixed this worked for 3 days and then the fans went crazy and the MBP went stupidly hot again - right fan going crazy, rattling and clunking.
Installed Leopard 10.5.2 update > asked to restart > then HD failed to boot > No OS available etc. Took to be repaired, right fan replaced again and internal HD replaced.
Got the laptop back after parts replacement and testing, worked for a few hours and then right fan started its old tricks but then the left fan started doing the same - now both fans are whirring and making grinding noises AND the HD makes clunking noises (like the heads are slipping) when the disk gets busy!!
What can I do now? I'm gonna send it direct to Apple rather than this ****** 3rd party Apple Center that continuously fails to fix this Laptop.
Hopefully Apple can sort this out for good

This is sounding more and more like a lemon. I'd call AppleCare, tell them of your experiences, and if they won't replace your machine, ask to be patched up to Customer Relations and get a case number. This being a user to user board all we can do is offer you sympathy. Now if you are at a stage where you just got back the machine and it hasn't yet failed we can offer some tips to prevent failure.

SuperDrive woes...

Hey All,
I was wondering if any of you had seen this...ANY DVD burned on my Mini, when placed in the Lombard Powerbook, doesn't work. These aren't movies, mind you, but backup application libraries. If I try to copy anything to my Lombard's desktop, it gets between 1 and 6 megs through and kicks out an Error -36, which indicates bad media or filesystem issues. However, if I take a DVD that I burned on a G5 tower and put it in the Lombard, I can copy from it all day long!
Anyone have a possible explanation other than the Mini's SuperDrive is a piece of junk?

It's possible that your Superdrive is faulty, but while you report what happens when you take a DVD burned on the mini and use it on your laptop, you don't say what happens if you put that same DVD in the G5 that you mention. Does it work correctly there? If it does, then clearly the Superdrive in the mini is not at fault and the drive in your laptop is either not DVD-capable or faulty itself. If the DVD you burned on the mini fails in the G5, then the mini's Superdrive is likely faulty, and you should call Apple to arrange for service.

G4 superdrive woes -desperate for help!

Hi all
I have a 2001 G4 Powermac 733mhz- memory 512mb- bus speed 133 mhz 60gb with a Superdrive cd/dvd burner model no CK116H97KKY
Basically, I was clearing it out as I'm about to sell it to a friend at work.
I put in a dvd-r and was going to burn off the last bits I needed before I wiped the disk, it came up that there wasn't enough memory on the start up to do this and auto ejected it. I then deleted some stuff off the desktop hoping it would then have enough free space and then I went to open the superdrive....nothing! Keyboard key doesn't work, button on front of drive doesn't work!
After a few restarts, holding down the eject button and then the mouse button...nothing
I used a paperclip to open it, hoping it would kickstart it....nothing
I've just tried to open the firmware (wasn't sure what I was doing) put in "eject cd" and it said it can't because it can't open the eject device
I'm really stuck and really peeved as I'm about to sell it on!
If you can help me I'm grateful for any advice, I'm not very technical so please use dummie language for anything complicated!!

These particular patches were for the original Apple-installed 2x drives. Seemed when greater than 2x media was placed in the drives, the laser attempted to burn at the disc's rated speed and the laser would be over heated and burn out. I believe the patch limited the drives' burn speeds. You would probably not see much improvement in a 20x drive versus your current ones. My 16x DVD drive typically burns at 12x (or slower when I want a high reliability burn).
I can't remember what 10.4.11 said about my 110D. I know that with 10.4.6 third party drives were supported by the OS and iApps without Patchburn.

Superdrive Update 2.1 killed my superdrive, Apple refuses to fix it

Those of you familiar with the issue probably know that there used to be a superdrive firmware update for MacBook Pros. My computer recieved this firmware upgrade 1 month after my warranty expired. At the time, I was in China for school. I recently came back to California and took my MBP to the local apple store. The "geniuses" told me they were unaware of the problem and since my laptop is out of warranty, it is my responsibility to pay for the repair - $310. Spoke to the manager, who explained that he has been working there for a LONG time and has never heard of anyone with this problem. Called Apple Care, told me they can't help me. Got transfered to customer relations, told me very politely that there is no way the firmware update could have killed the superdrive. That it must have been something else that caused the superdrive to stop working. When I mentioned the users on the forum, they said that forum posters sometimes don't know what they are talking about.
Very disappointed with Apple's attitude when an issue like this arises. Let me know if anyone has any suggestions. My main concern is not being able to re-install OS X or Windows XP through bootcamp since I do not have an external DVD-drive.

Hi, tbk568. Firstly, you've posted in a forum devoted to the "unibody" MBP that was released in October 2008, and that isn't the model you have. Secondly, there is no trace on Apple's Downloads site of any such thing as SuperDrive Firmware Update 2.1. There's a 2.0, but that isn't applicable to any MBP. You seem firmly convinced that everyone knows the apparently nonexistent firmware update "kills" MBP SuperDrives, and anyone who doesn't admit it is less than responsible. But we don't have any idea why you believe that, and you haven't mentioned any supporting evidence or provided links to anything that might shed any additional light on your complaint. So we're pretty much at a loss.

I suspect the chances that you'll convince Apple to replace your drive for free are negligible under the circumstances. If you can't make any further progress with Apple or are disinclined to try, then I recommend that you buy an external SuperDrive or replace your internal one yourself. Either option will cost less than a third of what you were quoted for the replacement by Apple, and will enable you to move on.

IChart & Fixed Query /w scooter values in legend (xMII 11.5.1)

My problem is that I cannot get scooter values to show in the legend with a simple iChart & Fixed Query. At least not without more problems. Let me explain...

I went one step further to see if I could get the scooter values shown in the legend. I modified the query to use the StartDate & EndDate placeholders like so:

NOW the scooter values are shown in the legend, which is great, but all of a sudden the zoom is broken. When I select an area to zoom and then click the zoom button, it zooms to a completely different area of the chart. This is worse than my original problem.
Can someone please help me out with this? I have a feeling I'm leaving out something simple, but I can't find it.
By the way, my display template and query template used in this example are empty so that I could show all parameters to you.

I removed scaling and accuracy parameters. I also removed some parameters that controlled styling. I added global auto scaling.
Now X & Y are updating properly on zoom. Although unzoom isn't working for start date and end date. They stay at the zoomed date. The post data also shows the zoomed dates being sent to the server after unzoom. The Y range updates properly on unzoom.

This problem isn't making any sense to me. The documentation makes it sound like showing the current values in the legend is as easy as setting ShowScooter = true. This wasn't the case for me though. I had to use the [SD] and [ED] placeholders in my fixed query before the values would show up in the legend. But then zooming breaks. It looks like we're heading in the right direction to get the zooming fixed, but at the cost of being able to scale each pen.
The first thing you said to me in your first post was that I'm using a 3+ years old version of xMII. Are you saying there is a good chance this is a bug? I was pretty convinced from the beginning that this problem is a bug. The customer I am working for set me up with an xMII 11.5.1 server because that is what they are using in production. Is there an online document with a list of bug fixes between versions? If this is a known bug in 11.5.1 then maybe I can get the go ahead to upgrade.

[FIXED] File permission issues.

Hi all,
I am unable to save over files without first giving a text editor with root privileges (sudo leafpad file_name).
The permissions state that my user is the owner of these files and that the owner can view, change and access them. I am also unable to open Spotify without first giving it root privileges.
Anyone got any suggestions as to how I can fix this?

I was working through what you asked me to do and I noticed something.
The output of ls -l of the files that I am unable to modify stated that I didn't have modification privileges for certain files. I checked the properties through the file manager and it said that it was owned by root and that I could not modify.
The files in question are things like .bashrc, .bash_profile and the rc.lua (awesome wm). These have been copied from /etc/skel and /etc/xdg/awesome to /home/ and ~/.config/awesome/ respectively.
I haven't had much of a need to save over non-configuration files as of yet, and have been using root privileges to do so assuming that there was an issue with all files but after doing your test I could see that there was no issue with other files. I also tried to save over a few others and everything worked fine.
I would consider this issue fixed as a simple chmod fixed the files I was unable to save over. But I'm wondering, is there a way that I can automatically change a file's permission as I copy it from / to my home directory?

your answer though apply more to errors that are not icluded in the error message as(in my example) i know what the error is or where it is in my code, i just don't know where to find the specific solution...
In my exemple, somewhere because i added field to the form my click event is still set to the original amount of 2 fields and now that i added new field my click event can't figure it out..... so i need to find where or what tells the click event to assume there is only 2 field.
Found the error in the help but they just tell you the error # and name...that's the step i would like to figure out...

I am getting "Not Responding" message. The fix in the Help is confusing and doesn't seem to match my setup. Using Windows 7 & firefox 7.0.1

The problem started after last update. I tried following the directions in firefox Help without success. They were confusing and the instructions did not match what I was seeing on my screen. I need a simple quick fix thank you.

There could be more than one reason for such messages.

All my DVD burner woes are gone!

I wanted to pass along my good news - I have surmounted my SuperDrive woes, and I am a happy camper.
To make a long story short, my G5 2x2GhZ of mid-2003 vintage developed a distaste for burning DVD's via the SuperDrive. I replaced it with a new Pioneer "DVR-112D-BK" and it rocks!
I read several posts regarding the fine folks at Other World Computing (macsales.com). This not a paid endorsement, but wow! For around $40, I got the new drive that burned 10 DVD-R's back to back at 18X right outta the gate! I am simply purring. This is on the heels of fussin' & cussin' at my old SuperDrive.
My advice - don't mess with an old drive! Replace it!
Just for a little further bragging on my new drive - I just burned to a Fuji DVD-R at 16X. Even in its healthy days, the SuperDrive would not burn to that media!

No fix for Categories / Calendar dilemma in 10.4.9 ?! Petition?

What is it going to take for Apple to support Categories from Palm devices to iCal?? I thought for sure that it would be fixed with the release of 10.4.9, but alas...
I know Apple reads these (or some of them at least) so Mr. Jobs, PLEASE release a iSync / iCal patch that will support Calendars created as Categories in Palm devices and vise versa!
I really do not want to have to ditch iCal & use Entourage...
I'm not sure how many people are affected by this, but I'm sure it's many. If you have this same problem, please reply and indicate so. I would love to see this simple problem fixed.

It's not beta software, it's release software. Inadequate given the improvements offered by Palm OS 5.4 or later, and clearly in need of an update, but release software nonetheless.
Who's blaming the consumer? I am simply saying that the expectations or demands of the consumer might be quite unrealistic. It is, after all, FREE bundled software. What else does it not do? It doesn't support users of danger hiptop, Blackberry or Windows Mobile OS devices. Should it? Are those reasonable expectations?
Should Apple bundle free software equivalent to Microsoft Office? What is reasonable? Are those questions that consumers should answer, or Apple?
I agree that it could be a much stronger product, but I'm not sure where they should draw the line. And consistent with their desire to encourage and support a strong, vibrant developer community, it doesn't make much sense to pull the rug out from underneath Mark/Space, Information Appliance Associates, snerdware, Spanning Sync and others working to extend the Sync Services framework.
