SVN Setup on Xserve 10.5.5

I have been attempting to setup and run a Subversion server on my Xserve 10.5.5. I followed the very robust instructions located at the following url to setup svn:
http://blog.paploo.net/2007/10/how-to-manage-your-own-subversion.html
Unfortunately, after receiving MANY "svn:301 moved permanently" errors, I finally gave up and decided to come here.
Initially, I wanted my svn repositories to be shared using AFP. When doing so, I could connect to the repositories just fine, but would receive "svn: can't get exclusive lock on file" errors. After doing extensive research, I found that AFP and SVN don't go together well.
I also attempted to host an svn directory on a site hosted by the Xserve but continually received the 301 error.
I wanted to know if anyone has successfully setup and run SVN on an Xserve and exactly how did you set it up?
Have you used multiple repositories successfully?
Where did you store your parent svn directory and repository folders?
How do your users access it? AFP? https?
Does anyone have any advice to help me setup SVN properly?

As I am still unable to get SVN working properly, I thought I would post a reply that would show my current status and implementation method. I am hoping that someone will see this, and help me finalize the setup process. The domain name has been changed to domain.com to simplify the setup.
I've created an svn parent directory at:
/Users/Shared/svn
I then created a repository, and allowed apache to write to the directory by running the following commands:
$> mkdir /Users/Shared/svn/domain.com
$> svnadmin create /Users/Shared/svn/domain.com
$> chown -R www:www /Users/Shared/svn/domain.com
I have then created a website (via Server Admin) that loads /Users/Shared/svn as it's "Web Folder." This website is accessible via the svn subdomain, example:
http://svn.domain.com/
In Server Admin, I then enabled WebDAV for this specific site.
I then ran the following command to create a user/password file to authenticate svn users:
$> htpasswd -cm /etc/apache2/svn-auth-file.passwd username
Last but not least, I went into the associated .conf file and made the following changes. Please note, the configuration file is named specific to this site (example: 0002_<ip address>_svn.domain.com.conf). I did not modify httpd.conf or load an extra .conf file.
<Directory "/Users/Shared/svn">
AllowOverride None
Options All -Includes -ExecCGI +MultiViews +Indexes
DAV svn
SVNParentPath /Users/Shared/svn
AuthName "SVN Repository"
AuthUserFile /etc/apache2/svn-auth-file.passwd
<Limit GET HEAD OPTIONS CONNECT POST PROPFIND PUT DELETE PROPPATCH MKCOL COPY MOVE LOCK UNLOCK>
Require valid-user
</Limit>
AuthType Basic
</Directory>
Here's where things get strange. I stop and restart apache, and attempt to access the svn repository via browser at: http://svn.domain.com/domain.com. When I access the url I am prompted for a password. Both OD users and the user I setup using the svn-auth-file.passwd login fine, and then display:
Revision 0:/
Powered by Subversion 1.4.4 (r25188).
So, it seems everything is working fine via browser. (Tested in Firefox 3 & Safari)
But, if I attempt to access the repository using the svn checkout command and the same username/password combination I receive 301 Moved Permanently errors. Example:
$> svn checkout http://svn.domain.com/domain.com
$> Password for 'username':
svn: PROPFIND request failed on '/domain.com'
svn: PROPFIND of '/domain.com': 301 Moved Permanently (http://svn.domain.com)
$>
I receive the same errors when attempting to access the repository using Coda (http://www.panic.com/coda/).
The error logs show the following lines on failed attempts:
[Mon Nov 03 13:41:10 2008] [error] [client 10.1.1.5] modauthapple: User username: authentication failure for "/domain.com": User not found by checkpw
[Mon Nov 03 13:41:10 2008] [error] [client 10.1.1.5] modauthapple: User username: authentication failure for "/domain.com": Password mismatch according to htaccess file
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this would be happening? And/or what I can do to alleviate these issues and get svn setup properly?
If you have any experience with svn setup, please don't hesitate to help me out. I am approaching desperate.
Thank you.

  • Don't setup an XServe with a DVI monitor if you intend to use a VGA monitor

    Hi Forum Folks.
A bit of a "gotcha" to warn others about, with XServes, and VGA vs DVI monitors.
We Recently re-setup (erase + install a fresh OS) on a 2008 XServe Xeon, with a DVI (Digital) monitor connected. All worked fine, and we went to move the server into the production environment.
However, when we moved + plugged the XServe into it's new home (a rack), it would not boot (flashing question mark).
Moving the Xserve out of the rack, and back to it's work-bench setup, made it work again.
We traced the problem to the monitor we used... If we hooked up a digital (DVI) monitor, the XServe worked fine (with the mini DVI to DVI connector). If we hooked up a VGA monitor (with a mini DVI to VGA connector) that's when the XServe wouldn't boot. We tried a variety of common techniques to solve the problem, including resetting various settings, re-installing Mac OS X 10.5.6 Server over the top etc.
    The solution:
(Although I'm sure there are simpler solutions):
We setup the server again (from scratch) using the VGA monitor combination from the very start of the setup, and all worked fine (on VGA or DVI monitors). The server is happily in production now, with it's VGA output.
So the lesson here: Always set up your XServe using a VGA-based monitor in the first instance.
    Hope this helps someone else.
    Cheers,
    Derek

So the lesson here: Always set up your XServe using a VGA-based monitor in the first instance.
... or don't use a monitor at all
I don't think I've ever used a monitor when setting up a server - maybe used a KVM if I've re-installed or upgraded the OS, but for the main part every install I do is run remotely.
Still it's good to know, especially since it defies logic.

  • Network setup on Xserve

i need some help on this issue.
is there any one who can help me in this issue..?
We have Windows2000 Domain Server with MDaemon for mail server and ISA Server for firewall with around 45 clients of Windows2000 professional and few have Windows XP. We have DSL Connection with fix IP for Internet Access which is shared with all clients. All clients have ISA firewall for internet access. We also have DHCP Server for Intranet.
    Installing Hardware and necessary Software,
    Configuring Domain Server,
connecting Windows2000 professional and Windows XP clients to the MAC Server,
    configuring email Server
    with regards

The Promise is going to present the RAID set to your OS as a raw disk, so to your OS it will look just like an unformatted drive. You need to use Disk Utility to partition and format the drive before it will show up in the Finder or be available for sharing (just like you would a stand alone drive).

  • Intel Xserve setup ?

    Hi All,
I am a new forum member and Intel Xserve owner looking for help with initial setup. I have a DSL modem, Vonage VOIP router (Linksys), Linksys wireless router and Linksys 16 port switch. I want to use the new Xserve as an open directory master and dhcp server initially and add services as I learn. Could someone tell me what the physical connection order and settings for the above devices should be? I have tried many different configurations with no success. I've taken Apple's Server Essentials course but we didn't setup an Xserve and the setup I did was not this involved.
    Thanks,
    TRBinTexas

What's your thinking behind using the XServe as a DHCP server? Generally I'd leave that up to the network device, such as the router.
What other devices do you have in your network? As it stands there isn't anything that I'd configure with DHCP addresses. Your wireless router should have a static address. I'd also set the VoIP router with a static address. Your server should have a static address.
It's OK to run DHCP for clients, but none of the devices you've mentioned so far should use it.
As for how it should all be set up, it's largely up to you.
I'd take the link from the modem to the VoIP router, and have the VoIP router manage all the traffic from clients to the outside world.
Plug the 'internal' link from the VoIP router to the switch.
Plug everything else into the switch.
Configure the base station as a simple bridge (not as a router).
Not sure what more you need.

  • New intel Xserve with Leopard Server setup assistance....

    Hello
Im quite a newbie when it comes to administrating OS X Server, Xserves and RAID's so please bare with me if the following question seems obvious or dumb...
Currently I have inherited the following setup - G5 Xserve running 10.4.10 Server which has the following services running = Kerio MailServer, AFP, DHCP, DNS, Firewall, NAT, OD, VPN and Windows. This Xserve is also connected to an Apple RAID via fibre channel for file sharing and also to a Tape multi-changer backup unit via scsi.
I have just bought a new Intel Xserve and have installed 10.5 Server on it. I have this server as I would like to get iCal Server and Directory up and running and eventually share some of the G5 services. For iCal Server and Directory I assume ill need the 10.5 Server set up as Open Directory Master but my worry is I have that already on my G5 Xserve. If I was to migrate the 25 usernames from there to the 10.5 Server, would every user still be able to connect to the RAID (as the RAID is still physically connected to the G5 Xserve) for file sharing?
I hope some one could advise or recommend a better way, let me know if you need me to try and clarify the question better!
    Thanks in advance

  • Sharing music from iTunes on an Xserve to new MacPro Desktop + MacBook Air

    Hello all,
Have a question here regarding sharing a central iTunes playlist/XServe and also enabling the functionality to add music to that XServe library remotely
    Current Setup:
-- Mac XServe running iTunes 24x7, sharing one playlist containing entire music library
-- MacPro Desktop and MacBook Air connected to shared playlist and streaming music successfully from XServe shared playlist
Short of running to another part of the house and sticking a CD into the XServe, please let me know if anyone out there is aware of a way to copy music to the iTunes music share/folder on the Xserve and have iTunes automatically scan that folder and add to the library/playlist, or some other option to add music to the central library for administration (Perhaps apple remote desktop to the XServer and then...)
Any thoughts appreciated, I will respond with more info ASAP if requested.
    Best,
    Elliott

Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
With iTunes 11 you might also have a Home Videos folder inside iTunes Media.
In the simplest cases you copy the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> on the source computer to <User's Music> on the target machine, install iTunes, and it "just works"TM.
If the media folder (inside the red outline) has been split out to a separate location then you can copy the library folder (outside the red outline) as before and connect the drive holding the media so that it has exactly the same path as before. If the drive appears as D: on one system and E: on the other then the library won't be able to find the media.
The crucial file is iTunes Library.itl - this contains a record of the tracks that have been added to the library, ratings, play counts, playlists etc.
See also: Make a split library portable.

  • Internet Security setup

    Hello,
I would like to setup my Xserve as an Internet Gateway and DNS server for a small network. The WAN interface for the server would be connected to a ISP Cable Modem, and set to the Primary Interface. I was wondering what device to put protect the network (From the Cable Modem to the Server interface)
because I tried doing this before and the network was breached. Also, I was wondering how I could connect the Server to a fiber optic switch (To share the internet and file services from the server).
    Thanks

I would like to setup my Xserve as an Internet Gateway and DNS server for a small network.
    Why?
Think about that very carefully before you answer. The XServe makes a very poor internet gateway device - or at the very least, a very expensive one. For the most part, your typical $50 home router does a better job.
DNS isn't an issue - it's perfectly reasonable to run your own DNS server for your network, but as a gateway system there are many many factors to consider.
First off is configuration. Pretty much, Mac OS X Server has an on/off toggle switch for whether it should share the network connection, but that's it. There's no reasonable interface for managing public vs. private services, and no interface for managing port forwarding to allow external clients to get to internal systems.
What this means is that at the very least you need to be comfortable with configuring the firewall and NAT daemons via the command line.
It also means you need to be VERY careful in setting up the other services you run on this machine - by default every service will listen on every interface, so if you run an Open Directory server, or an AFP server, or a Calendar server, or a print server, or any other server, then that service will be available to random internet clients. You have to go out of your way to secure these services to only listen on the internal network.
That is, of course, unless you only run the NAT service, but then that's a pretty expensive box for just running NAT, and that's why I say a just get a cheap old NAT router and be done with.
You could put a firewall in front of the server but you're now just adding to cost, and the chances are that firewall will handle NAT just as easily (if not more so) than Mac OS X Server.

  • Podcast Producer and Xgrid setup - Jobs don't run

I've successfully setup an xserve here to be part of an OD setup, setup xgrid which is running successfully, and have Podcast Producer up and running and successfully running on the xgrid. However, when i open up podcast producer and go through the workflow process and submit, nothing happens except for temp folders stacking up in the podcast recording directory.
Only thing I could find was this error in the podcast producer logs:
Sat Nov 03 00:07:37 -0400 2007 -- Unknown exception while kicking off xgrid jobs: Fail to set key base: Base directory in /Volumes/Puma/Publisher/Podcast/Recordings/32E631A1-0B26-495B-B363-66FDDDDB233B /properties.plist

Not sure if this will fix your problem, but I was having the same problem until I looked at the specs for XGrid, it has to run on an Intel Mac. This is where you can get the specs:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306737
Here is what is in the doc:
    Podcast Capture requirements
Any Mac running Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
iSight camera (built-in or external) or FireWire DV camcorder
    Podcast Producer Server requirements
Any Mac running Mac OS X Server version 10.5 Leopard
Xsan for optional cluster file services
    Podcast Producer Xgrid rendering requirements
Any Intel-based Macintosh Server or Intel-based desktop Mac (a Mac Pro, for example)
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or Mac OS X Server version 10.5 Leopard
At least 1 GB of memory (RAM) plus 512 MB of additional RAM per processor core
At least 50 GB of available disk space
Xsan for optional cluster file services
    Quartz Extreme-enabled video chipset
Note: Quartz Extreme support can be verified in the Graphics section of Apple System Profiler.
Note: If a system is providing multiple Podcast services (for example, Podcast Producer and Podcast Producer Xgrid rendering), the system needs to meet both requirements.

  • Help Upgading to xserve

    Hi Guys.
I need to upgrade a powermac G4 running 10.3 Server to a G5 xserve environment. Below is the current and new setup:
    *Current setup:*
PowerMac G4 running 10.3 Server running AFP and Open Directory from Server Admin.
There are 2 disks in the machine : 40GB drive which is the boot disk and has 8 folders currently being shared via AFP. The second disk is 60GB and has 6 folders currently being shared.
    *New Setup*
    G5 Xserve with 2 x 250GB drives mirrored RAID running 10.5 Server.
    Here are my questions:
    1. I need to migrate all info for workgroup manager from the powermac to the xserve - what is the easiest way to do this?
    2. I need to combine the shared folders from the 40GB and 60GB drive to the 250GB drive whilst preserving the file permissions - how can this be done?
    Any help is much appreciated.

I'm just theorizing here, but I can see two possible paths.
    1) set the Xserve up as an Open directory replica, then promote it to master. Use rsync to sync the data -it will preserve permissions, but you'll need. To reset the shares.
    2) use ast to clone the old OS drive, then perform an upgrade install. This should preserve the accounts, shares and data from the first drive but you'll still need to rsync the data off the second drive.

The DART table maps the 32-bit addresses of PCI cards to the 64-bit addresses of memory. It's sensitive to the direction of data. In other words, if it expects a write and it gets a read, it panics.
Now that you know all that you can find on the web about this, welcome to h---. My XServe has had ~25 of these panics. I've switched the chassis', so everything but the root drive and it's backups were changed, I've grilled my tape library (at one point, it looked like a faulty controller was the problem), and last Friday, I disconnected another XServer that didn't need to be connected to the fibre. Apple has been useless trying to solve this. They just tried to blame a Small Tree ethernet card. My next step is to setup the XServer to dump a core file when it crashes and see if I can get that analyzed.

  • New Xeon Xserve

I dare hope that the new xserves will at least tolerate booting off FibreChannel as to what is still non existent on the mac pro ... I mean who will use the things if we cannot clone and boot back from the raid in case of a failure ? I would be more than happy to see something done as quickly as possible before the units start shipping. This at least would avoid the embarrassements we met with the Macpro.

one of the reasons i would not setup an xserve without raid boot capability...
    1) We need raid 5 to be deployed all along the setup ... that is about 50 machines. how would you suggest we simply do that with the internal drives?
    2) Ram has never been the issue we are looking at 32GB configs a piece we will need that for rendering...
    3) Boot time and data access speed and reliabilty are critical in the application.Yes we could move the VMs somewhere on the raid but the futher you wonder from Apples config on Mac os X server the more likely you may get a spanking during next software update .... (serialnumberd on mac os X server anyone ? )
    4) ok these severs are not to be human accessed normally yet you have to get 24/7/360 operation parameters ... if you cannot boot an external drive in case of a problem arises you are toast.
    5) i have a macpro that shipped with the F/C card and i have ordered a raid drive for test ... guess what i tend to backup my internal to my F/C every two days something went bad with the internal .. could not boot off the raid means reinstall from the CD then getting back your data from raid to internal... now imagine that with 50 xserves , scary.
    6) Raid 5 may seem like a waste of perfect good storage to anyone but it is a necessity in the corporate environment. The goal is here is redundancy AND throughput.
    7) We separate data from boot as much as mac os X server tolerates (that sometime isnt much) ... but we need complete redundancy and recovery capacities in case of failures. And that includes boot and data partitions with recovery times under the minute range. that means boot capability off the xraids . All the mission critical stuff comes off the xraids. (boot raid 51) (data raid 51) X2 with 8 extra raids that cycle backups from the mission critical setup. The internals are just intermediary storage ... (backup drives managed on a raid 0 basis).
keep in mind Raid5 is the master need here , not speed or storage space...
PS: keep in mind that mac os x server 10.4.8 universal binary would not install on the macpro on anything but the internal hard drive (ouch). rapid deployment went out the window with that one , hence the need to reinstall from the the CD on the macpro ... then backing back from the xraid to the internal .. time consuming process if there is one.

  • Xserve and FibreChannel question

    Hi,
i need to setup some xserve for a video producer for a massive video editing.
    this is my stuff:
    1 (one) Xserve G5 dual 2.3GHz 1GB ram 1FibreChannel pcix
    2 (two) XserveRaid , the first with 14HD 400GB (5.6TB) the second 14 HD 500GB (7TB)
    my question is this:
is it possible to link to a fibre channel two XserverRaid?
Is there a loss of power or something else?
How can setup them to have some advantages in video composing/editing?
    thank you!

The Xserve RAID has 2 fibre channel ports, and they are independent. So each Xserve RAID requires a dual-port HBA to connect. You can connect 2 Xserve RAIDs to a single Xserve, if you put 2 fibre channel cards in the Xserve. This will take both PCI slots, so you won't be able to use a video card in this case (so hopefully you have ARD).

  • Very slow Time Machine Initial Backup to Leopard Server on Xserve with RAID

I'm having trouble backing up my iMac to my Xserve running leopard with dual drobos as my time machine drives
    So here is the setup:
Server: Xserve (dual quad 2.8 xeons) backing up to Drobo array with 4x1tb drives running (dual drobos on server) fully patched 10.5 server with 16gb/RAM (showing 8gb free)
Network: 1gbs via catalyst switches on essentially unloaded segment (a couple of folks reading emails)
    Source Machine: iMac 24" 3.06 Core2Duo with 8gb RAM
Most important fact: nothing has changed on the server (other than usual updates)
Doing an initial backup of the iMac over the network, and getting peak of about 100Kb/sec, and much of the time it seems to have stalled. Given that the machine has like 230GB to backup, this is going to take a real long while. When I query activity monitor on both the client and Xserve, they are both virtually idle with all resources free (lots of free RAM/Disk/CPU). Neither machine is running any apps right now during the test (other than filesharing, but nobody is using as the office is empty today)
Now one thing to note is the staggering number of files (iPhoto library is ~120gb and holds over 500,000 files [faces?]) giving a total of 1.2M files.
As a point of testing, copied a 500mb quicktime movie to same partition, took <5 seconds.

Should I be concerned that the TimeMachineBuddy widget is producing tons of error messages in the system console (and doesn't seem to work)

  • Slow Xserver Response

    Hi all,
Setup: G5 Xserve 2 gig, 1 gig RAM, OSX 10.4.7 Server; 80 gig boot drive, two 500 gig HDs in other bays. Clients (maybe 30 max) connecting from OSX machines via "Go > Connect to Server > 192.168.1.15" (IP Address of xServe). Server is used only for file storage. All the files are in 5 different shares on one of the two 500 gig drives (which are then backed up nightly to the second 500 gig drive).
Here's the problem: Things have gotten painfully slow in reading directories. For instance, in the Finder, if I open up one of the shares that's mounted on my desktop, it takes at least 30 seconds to list all the files/folders there (108 items). Also, in apps like InDesign, when trying to place an image from a pretty full directory, it can take up to a minute for the list of available files to build.
Can't really pinpoint when this might have started happening, perhaps with 10.4.6 update? Up until then everything was fine.
Tried rebooting the server; turned off all other services; zapped PRAM; deleted cache; deleted .DSstore files; all to no avail.
Anybody else seen this or have any possible solutions?

Has the system got progressively slow over time or was it a sudden thing?
If it's sudden then it may be something like a duplex mismatch on the server (if it's affecting all clients) or on the client (if only specific clients).
Check the switch for errors. High rates of CRC errors can indicate that a duplex mismatch is at fault. You can also run the command netstat -s -w 10 to get an updating list of throughput statistics on the network. Ideally the 'errs' columns should be 0. Try watching the stats as you access the server from a remote system.
You might also want to look at what the server is doing - whether it's CPU bound (some process is using all available CPU cycles), or memory bound (there isn't enough RAM to keep all services in memory, causing excessive paging). 1GB should be enough for a simple file server, but if the server is performing other tasks, too, it may be too little.

  • Cannot open G5 xserve

    Hi,
I've opened xserve's before but somehow this one simply will not open!
After shutting down, I unscrew the turn screws and (I even checked the manual) I simply pull on the turn screws.
I do so and pull (quite) hard and it does not budge.
Anyone have a clue what the problem could be?
I did not setup this xserve and I understand that it's possible to lock the case.
I see that the lock symbol on the front is pointed toward unlocked.
    Thanks for your help!

Also be aware that on the G5 model the exterior case stays in the rack and the Xserve slides out like a tray. If you're pulling on the case you're actually pulling on the rack-mounted part not the machine itself. If the exterior case got torqued during installation or it isn't sitting completely square it can be a little sticky to get moving.
Check here for an illustration: http://www.flickr.com/photos/88064208@N00/37339947/
As long as the thumbscrews are out you should be able to slide the unit out part way (about 1/3?) but then there are orange tabs (you can see them in the photo as well) that need to be depressed to slide it completely out.
    Good luck,
    =Tod
