Switch off imac internal display

Hello,
i bought an 24" external monitor yesterday. I want to use that external display only. How can i switch off the internal display of my imac?
Lowest brightness and a black desktopbackground are not very satisfying to me .
Thank you for any ideas.

Thank you Eric for your advice about the black desktop background.
But you have the opportunity to switch off the display on an apple mobile device. Why not on an imac? Just a few lines of source code
What will happen if i disconnect the lcd panel from logic board?

    Hi ,
My MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) switches on but internal display remains off/black .There is no start-up sound and the fan starts off normal but after about Five minutes begins to run even faster as if the machine is running a heavy load.It displayed a question mark some time back then a friend borrwed it ,he flashed the system and put windows 7.Then a few days pasted and now it wont display as stated.I have tried to Reset SMC and the Command + P + R + Power but still no response. Please assist?
    Regrads Josh

I think your "friend" caused a problem (or two).
I do not know what "flashed the system" means......
Based on what was done, I would probably erase the HD and restore the system from a backup before the software changes were made.

  • Does anyone know how to switch off the internal wifi test use a wifi dongle at a usb input?

    HI
I am having problems connecting to wifi with a new Mac.
I have tried all kinds of things like shifting and monitoring my router's channel.
Short of using a power cube or crawling under the house and running a cable I have decided perhaps to use a Netgear wifi dongle.
I would like to switch off the internal wifi and allow the external device to connect.
With a new machine I really don't see why I have to do this.
Incidentally all my old devices have no problems with the wifi signal.
    Cheers
    Jack

    Thanks for the suggestions.
Yes I have done all that was suggested on that site.
i have also been in contact with Apple Care.
I have also reset the router firmware.
I downloaded a piece of software called inSSIDer and checked out other wifi channels in the area. I moved my preferred channel to another ones that looked better however that is back on auto now and the router seems to be picking up channel 6 which is the best one and scores the most points.
I use a netgear wifi dongle on my 'smart' tv and was thinking of using that however I am beginning to thisk that 'powerline' products may be the answer.
The Mac is only two weeks old and I seem to be messing about with the wifi connection most of the time.
I actually cleaned the whole disk and reinstalled the operating system earlier this week.
    Desperate or what!
Sometimes I think I should just return it but I like to solve problems and will keep going for a while before I lose patience.

  • Switching off Macmini without Display

One of the ways I would like to use my Macmini is with Windows XP Pro on Bootcamp controlled through Windows Remote Desktop without a display, keyboard and mouse connected. This all works perfect, but I have just one question left:
Is there a way to switch off the Macmini after use, without any display and keyboard connected?
Reason I would like to use the Macmini this way, because it is very nice and compact to mount it in a 19" rack.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I am not sure that you will be happy with this type of performance. That is not a good way to use a Mac long term. There is usually too much lag, nor is it full screen.
You can power down a Mac mini by pressing and holding the power button, however this is not very good on the HDD. It can corrupt your directory and such quickly if you do this all of the time.
You can also configure the power button to sleep a Mac by pressing the button once and releasing it.

  • Manually turning off iMac G5 Display

    Hi,
I've been searching around and haven't been able to find an answer to this.
I have my computer set to turn on the screen saver after 5 minutes of inactivity and turn off the display after 15 minutes of inactivity, and I like it that way. My computer is in my bedroom though, and sometimes I want the display to just shut off when I am going to sleep... but sometimes, I am working on something that takes the computer a while to process, such as exporting a large final cut file, burning a DVD, or leaving an away message enabled on AIM. I don't want to put the entire computer to sleep, because that stopps the process... and I don't want to wait 15 minutes for my display to shut off... and I don't want to change the Energy Saver settings every single time I want the display off!
Is there any way to do this?
Is there a script of somekind that can do this?
I'm familiar with the Apple-Option-Eject command, but that puts the entire computer to sleep, not just the screen.
I've also tried the "Lights Out" app... but that program doesn't do what I want. It's basically a different version of energy saver.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks so much.

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and paste in the following:
display dialog "What type of sleep do you want?" buttons {"Display", "Full", "Cancel"} default answer "An administrator password is required."
    set {the_password, the_button} to {text returned of the result, button returned of the result}
    if the_button is "Full" then
do shell script "pmset -a displaysleep 0 sleep 15" password the_password with administrator privileges
    end if
    if the_button is "Display" then
do shell script "pmset -a displaysleep 1 sleep 0" password the_password with administrator privileges
    end if
Changing the power management settings through a method other than the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences requires an administrator password due to the permissions on the files which store them. Save the script as an application and place it in an easily accessible location. More information on the usage of pmset is available here.

  • Safe to switch off iMac regularly, safe to switch off iMac regularly

hi guys - im a little embarassed even asking this question but im new to mac and the manual says to only shut down the imac if you are not going to use it for a few days otherwise put into sleep
thing is i only use my imac about an hour every night but i prefer turning it off as im at work the next day - dont like leaving anything on. will it cause more and wear if i dont use the sleep ?
    thanks

You will get strong opinions for both; IMHO, if you're only using it for about an hour, there is nothing wrong with shutting it down - I do that if I'm not going to use it for a longer period because I'd rather not be connected to the internet automatically 24/7 and prefer not to waste natural resources. I'm aware that the manual suggests letting it sleep; a senior Apple advisor told me that he shuts his down regularly. I've tried both methods and prefer shutting it down at least 2 - 3 times per week because there are certain checks it goes through during bootup which will be missed by just letting it sleep and I've never had a problem with a hard drive because of it (or for any other reason for that matter). As for the maintenance scripts which run in the middle of the night - they are no longer as important as they used to be and if you'll let it sleep once or so per week, they will run automatically when it wakes up.

  • Macbook Air 13" - How to switch off internal monitor?

While working with an external monitor (e.g. TV), I would like to switch off the internal monitor. Is there any function which helps me?

this thread talks about running several monitors as advertised by apple and running demanding task on them.
with the lid open, the keyboard offers a very efficiant heat escape vector, which is blocked when the lid is closed - this is a basic and commonsense insulation effect.  this thread also mentions the use of temperature monitoring software and thus a repeatable test setup. the temps recorded were also mentioned. they rose when the lid was closed, the running task remaining unchanged. as far as i could track down the cpus in discussion will shut down around the 105 degree celsius range. i observed system shut downs when the system approached 103° celsius.  not to mention that the fans will run loud well before that.
again this is on hardware checked and ok-ed by apple service.
the question still welcoming an expert answer: is there any way to switch off the built-in macbook monitor while the lid is open ?

  • N95 - display switches off

Hi, I have a problem with N95 display - when the lcd light is on, it works.... but as soon as the light goes off, the display switches off... so there is no screensaver with time and sms/missed calls icons... Even during a call, after a few seconds (exactly as I have set in settings to switch off light) the display switches off... Do you have any idea where could be the problem, please? The LCD was changed, so does there exist a possibility, it is a faulty LCD?

If the display is working ok when active, then there is unlikely to be anything wrong with it, check the settings in personalisation. Menu>tools>settings>general>personalisation>themes>power saver, and tick Date and time !
    Good Luck

  • Put internal display into overscan

I've unlocked screen spanning so that i can have a vga res of 1280x960 but this is putting lots of unnessary pressure on the GPU, the poor thing is obviously suffering sometimes. Things like the fancy screen transitions of exposé and dashboard are extremely jerky. Switch back to mirror mode and they are silky smooth.
I know that Apple in all their wisdom decided not to offer a way for turning off the internal display but is there any way to switch the main display into an overscan mode in order to circumvent the 1024x768 limitation when using mirror mode?
Almost all graphic cards, including the radeon mobility can do overscan so there must be a way to enable it for the ibooks lcd.

    HI Sudhakar
Hierarchial ALV is used to show header and Item data in different rows.
IF you want to divide a particual record into different rows then you have to give row no. also in field catalog like
    for <field1>
    i_fieldcat-row_pos = '1'.
    i_fieldcat-column_pos = '1'.
    for <field6>
    i_fieldcat-row_pos = '2'.
    i_fieldcat-row_column = '1'.

  • How can I disable the internal display on my MacBook Pro with connected external display?

I used this metod with the MagSafe power cable connected (see http://osxdaily.com/2012/06/15/yet-another-way-to-turn-off-internal-lcd-display- of-macbook-pro-with-lid-open/).
Open System Preferences and click “Mission Control”, then click on “Hot Corners”
Select a hot corner and pull down the menu to select “Put Display to Sleep”
Now connect the external display to the Mac and move the cursor to the newly created sleep corner to turn off the internal display
Close the MacBook lid and wait a few seconds before opening the lid again, the internal display should stay off while the external display will be powered on
This worked great under Mac OS X 10.7.4, but after the last update to 10.7.5 it doesn’t work more. The built-in display turns off really, but a few seconds after opening the lid it lights up again. Do you have any suggestions? Dimming the brightness or clamshell mode is not very useful.
    MacBook Pro 13-inch,
    2,7 GHz Intel Core i7,
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G56)
    Thanks!

I have the same problem: not able to work with my external display mirroring the internal one - while shutting the internal display off.
I believe there is an issue with Mac OS X Lion 7.5 that Apple needs to solve, since apparently it does not happen with this version of the OS only...

Or any other way to solve it?

  • IPod Nano (4th Generation) switches on when connected to USB power - shows Menu & hangs (unresponsive to click wheel) - deems off after 5-sec - Switches off after disconnecting from USB Power - syncs with iTunes - Tried 5R's - Problem still persists

    1. The iPod Nano (4th Generation - 8GB) switches on, only when connected to USB power by showing apple logo and displays Menu options thereafter..
    2. However, I can not access Menu as it is unresponsive to click wheel. As a result it is inaccessible to any further use,
    3. NOTE: it displays "Battery Fully charged" icon on the screen without any "Lock" icon.
    4. After  5-sec to 10-secs the screen deems off.. i.e. goes to sleep mode.. And thereafter would probably remain like that (sleeeping) for eternity!!!!
    5. It Switches off after WITHOUT DISPLAYING any Apple Logo immediately after disconnecting from USB Power.
    6. In other words, it can be switched on only through USB power in spite of battery being fully charged.
    7. Interestingly, it syncs with iTunes. It is recognised in iTunes (Latest version 11+).. Displays on screen all commands Like.. syncronising, connecting, connected,
    8. Allows to add Music, videos like a normal ipod & displays all status information in iTunes.
    9. Read Trobleshooting & Tried all 5R's. Registered, Resetted, updated & Restored to iOS 1.0.2
    10. It is now displaying to select Language in place of Menu options, with no access through click wheel, centre button whatsoever... Problem still persists
KINDLY GUIDE ME THE SOLUTION. APPRECIATE YOUR RESPONSE in advance...

"I get the feeling that this is a software issue that could probably be solved quite easily"
Since you have already tried all the normal troubleshooting solutions, take the iPod to your nearest Apple Store for a *proper diagnosis.* The staff there will be able to confirm if your problem is software or hardware _*at no cost to you.*_

  • N8 Automatic switch-off. Help please

whenever i start some of my phone applications, like web, make a call, receive a call, start maps, my phone automatically switches off even if the battery is full. And when i restart my phone, it switches off again after displaying the nokia logo or just after the main screen is displayed. The same process continues repeatedly. Is my N8's battery not working correctly???? Do i need a new battery?? plz help!!

Forgot to say, if you can, try a new SIM card as there have been reports of similar problems with old SIM cards.
Also if Nokia care have wiped their hands of you it may be worth going through the hard reset, reinstall / change firmware process.
Google the process it can't be discussed here.
