  • 1st used ipod with pc, now, want to switch to mac, help!

I first used my mini ipod with my windows desktop computer. I recently purchased an apple notebook and wish to use my ipod with it, and not with my PC. However, because my ipod is formatted for windows, I cannot use it for my mac.
I've been searching through the forums for help on how I can achieve this goal of switching to the mac, but with no luck. Is there any way that I can reformat my ipod to a mac? (easy explanations please!) Thanks!

The really easy way to do this is to plug your ipod into the new (mac) machine, and once you see your ipod show up on the desktop/ itunes dock, go look for the program called "ipod updater." This program will prompt you to reset your ipod and reformat it to mac, and you will follow the steps of setting up you ipod as when you first acquired it. The downside to this is that you will loose all the files on your ipod. There are two things you can do if you want to transfer the music onto your new machine. 1) Go get the CDs and upload them onto itunes on your new mac or 2) go consult google to find a third party program that will allow you to take the files off your ipod and put them onto your new mac. To my knowledge, apple doesn't provide a method of doing this so you have to download another program.
If you decide to recover your ipod, that is use a third party program to get the songs off of it, then wait until that process is complete and then use ipod updater to reset your pod to your new mac. With your ipod still plugged in, go into itunes, rename your ipod, and let itunes automatically update your ipod. After that you can set it to manual again (you may have to unplug it first). I do not reccomend using a third party program to maintain large music libraries on both computers, you should choose one that will be your home computer and stick with it.

  • Sync multiple iTunes libraries with iPod?

How do I sync several iTunes libraries (selectable by holding down ALT while starting iTunes) with my iPod Touch (4th generation)?
With limited hard drive space on my Powerbook I've chosen to create an iTunes library which more or less just contains podcasts and internet radio stations etc. and use an external drive for another library which contains all my music.
I was hoping I could switch between the different libraries and have my iPod sync to both of them, but alas I get a message when switching over to the "music" library that my iPod "belongs to" another library and that if I choose to use the current one everything will be erased and overwritten.
So how do I prevent this from happening while allowing me to add music from the second library?

I'm not sure if I've got it right but I've played around a bit after reading the above and come to the conclusion that I first need to check (turn on) the "Manually manage music and videos" (and most likely "Open Itunes when this iPod is connected") options in iTunes when I click on my iPod icon on the left column.
But much to my surprise I can still have iTunes automatically (or so it seems) sync my podcasts which makes things a whole lot easier than doing that manually for each podcast update!
For everything else (music, videos, PDF files/books/audiobooks, iTunes U, Ringtones etc.) I will need to manually drag and drop over to the iPod. To make things easier I created a playlist folder named "Manually transfer to iPod" with various playlists inside (just to make it easier to see what my iPod contains from that particular library and to organize things neatly).
And instead of dragging the items from each playlist over to the iPod I simply select the folder, then drag all the items on the right hand side (contents) over to the iPod.
I haven't tried switching libraries yet, but I assume I'll be able to add media from there as well without any problems.
    Was this what you meant?

  • How do I save my iTunes library so I can open it again when I switch libraries?

When I switch libraries itunes won't open the folder that contains all my music from my library. It will only open the previous saved versions. How do I create a new saved version with all the music from my library?

Itunes always saves the library when it closes and will use that library when it next opens unless you change it.
    To switch libraries:
Hold down the shift key and start iTunes, keep holding the shift key until you are prompted to choose or create a library. Select  "Choose" and navigate to the location of your other library and choose iTunes library.itl.

  • Using IPod on more than one machine

Does anyone know the process to authorize more than one computer to play and recognize an ipod's library? I want to use my ipod on my home computer and work one as well? I want to keep the same library and not lose anything.
Anyone know how to do this? Please help.
    Thanks,
    Lazz
      Windows XP

"Does anyone know the process to authorize more than one computer to play and recognize an ipod's library?"
You don't need to authorise a computer to use an iPod on it. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. Once your iPod is set to manual you can connect it to other computers and other iTunes libraries without the message that it is linked to another library:

  • Wanted to use ipod classic 120gb between 2 p.c.s

I wanted to use my ipod on home dell pc, and also at work compac pc; both have windows xp; when i take it from home to work get a message asking if i;d like to restore setting to view my ipod.
will i lose all that is currently on my ipod
and if i continue to switch between the two will it eventually affect my ipod?
are there any other possible solutions?
    thanks to any responces.

    Hello hoagie96,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you have your iPod set up to automatically sync iTunes content, any computer that you hook it up to (other than its original) will ask you to erase and sync, which, yes, will delete everything from your iPod, so make sure you hit Cancel.
If you wish to sync your iPod between two computers, you will need to set it up to manually manage music and videos, which can be accomplished via iTunes. For more information on how to use your iPod with multiple computers, check out this Apple support document. Hope it helps.

You no longer need an install CD as the iPod software is now contianed in iTunes.
If the computer is not recognizing that your iPod is connected, try the suggestions in these articles.

  • Using ipod shuffle with more than 1 computer

Some of my music library is on my work machine and some of it is on my home machine. This has never been an issue with my ipod classic. I plug it into either machine and it connects no problem.
Not so with my shuffle. After I loaded it up with songs on my home machine, I tried connecting it to my work machine and got an error message. What's up with that? Is there a way to get around it?
    Many thanks.

  • In iTunes, how do I switch to an Ipod nano from and old ipod that doesn't work any more

in iTunes on your computer, how do I switch to an Ipod nano from and old ipod that doesn't work any more?  It has all the folders and songs I had on my old ipod, but does not recognize my ipod nano and cannot sync with it?

    Hi bob12345S,
If your iPod nano does not appear in iTunes when connected to your computer, you may want to troubleshoot using the steps on this page -

  • Copying my libraries using BASH cp broke the library bundles

    Hi there,
I needed to move a huge amount of data in a couple of libraries around and doing that in Finder did not work, either the Mac crashed or Finder quit with errors. The libraries were OK, the filesystem was OK and so on. I ended up copying libraries from one filesystem to another using
    cp -pPR foo /foobar/foo
The target filesystem was a share on a NAS device.
I noticed that the library bundle does not seem to be recognized as such anymore in Aperture, it won't open it although when I preselect it in the 'Switch Libraries' window, it correctly displays the number of masters and versions.
In Finder, that library now shows up as
    foobar.aplibrary
    Instead of just foobar.
Can someone explain what went wrong and how to fix it? With one of the smaller libraries, I managed to do this to fix it:
    Create a new, empty library.
Copy the contents of the package folder of the broken library into the contents of the package folder of the new library, overwriting any files.
That worked for a small library. I'm trying for a huge library now, that takes ages to copy. So maybe can cut into this and just help me out with some advice?
    thanks,
    Tobias

See  Aperture: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library
Basically the Aperture library does not like being on a non OS X formated voulme.
The reason for the Finder nor ewcongnizing the library is most likely caused by the loss of the extended attributes that indicated theat the library was a package. If you do an ls -l on the library does the name end in a '@'? If not you definitly lost the extended attributes.
All in all messing wiht the Aperture library in the manner you did is not a good idea. As far as fixing it wihtout knowing the whole stoty that will be difficult.  You might want to just drop back to your backup and strart over. It will be a lot easier in the long run.

  • Questions using ipod nano in the car

    Hi !
I´m using my iPod in the car on an Alpine Car Stereo .
All things work perfect until I install the iPod-Update Firmware1.1.3
    Now I have problems like:
The iPod doesn´t remind the last titles; that means: today I´m hearing "Rock" and if I
turn on the radio tomorrow morning, it´s searching for the iPod an than begins to play the
first of 350 songs (for example)
And I find out, that the iPod battery is empty. Normally it get´s loaded by using it during a ride.
    Any suggestions about that ??
Are there any special things I have to switch in the iPod menue or what ?
    Thanks in advance !

First thing to check is the Shuffle function of the iPod. Shuffle should be set to OFF to work with the Alpine correctly and when you updated the firmware it may have reset the iPod to default to turning the Shuffle feature ON.

  • I bought a used ipod touch that had 2200 bad songs.  Unfortunately I decided to try to delete them before I started buying music.  It deleted EVERYTHING.  Help!!  I'm looking at a screen that says itunes and nothing else.

I bought a used ipod touch that had 2200 bad songs.  Unfortunately I decided to delete them before I started purchasing music.  EVERYTHING was deleted.  The screen is blank except for the itunes emblem.  Help!

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.

  • When I switch libraries I lose the majority of the material in my main library and can only restore it by repairing the database. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and how I can resolve the problem? Thanks

When I switch libraries I "lose" the majority of the material in my main library (or at least I can't see it) and can only restore it by repairing the database. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and how I can resolve the problem? Thanks

I seem to have found a way around it. Rather than switching libraries by going into files/switch libraries I used Aperture Preferences to change them. I've done it a couple of times and it appears to work OK.
That is an interesting finding. It suggests, that your "Preferences" file "com.apple.Aperture.plist" may have been corrupted and you fixed it this way. Can you now switch between libraries the usual way? If not, I'd try to remove the "preferences" file from the user library to the Desktop and relaunch Aperture.
    The Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805
describe how to remove the user preferences.
