Switching to BT Infinity (fibre) broadband

Hi
I've just applied for a BT phone + 20GB BT Infinity 1 account and am wondering if I need to contact my current provider (Utility Warehouse) to get a MAC code?
I thought I'd seen somewhere in the online application process that I woouldn't need one (perhaps because I'm switching fron ADSL to DSL) but now I'm not so sure. There is nothing on any of the emails I have received so far but I have only just applied (90 mins ago)so perhaps BT haven't got around yet to issuing full instructions.
BT seem to imply that they will handle all of the telephone switching process but does the same apply to Broadband?
As I am switching from bog-standard broadband to fibre, will I have to tell UW so that they will swich my service off on changeover day?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

getting the MAC doesn't cost anything and will be available should BT ask for it  I know when my daughter moved from another ISP adsl to BT fibre she was asked for MAC code

  • Switching from BT Infinity 2 Unlimited. Worth it? Is Sky Fibre Pro still available?

Hi all I'm currently on BT Infinity 2 Ulimited, but I've become less than satisfied with the speed on my line. I know the line is capable of around 60MB/s as that is what the tests were indicating when the engineer was round to install the service. However it has slowly deteriorated over time and now sits at just over 40MB/s. BT are beyond useless and will not accept that this is an issue, let alone try and fix it. Has anybody recently switched from BT Infinity to Sky Fibre? How is the upgrade process? And has this generally improved or worsened your speeds? Lastly, I can't for the life of me find this Sky Fibre Pro (up to 80MB/s) service on the Sky website anyway. Google results seem to take me to 404 pages. Is Pro still available, and if so where do I order it? If all Sky offer is an "up to" 38MB/s service, then I won't be switching. I have no desire to make my speeds worse still. Thanks a lot.Ryan

First thing to remember is that Sky Fibre will still use the same cabinets and cables to get to your house, so changing provider will not necessarily make any difference, although the physical moving of the cables may make things better, but may also make things worse.
Deterioration is an unfortunate side effect of more and more people using fibre and the crosstalk between cables.
Sky Fibre Pro is still available but you can't sign up online, only by calling Sky.

  • Switching to BT Infinity - Need to know a few thin...

I have asked to switch to BT Infinity from BT Broadband option 3 and would like to know a few things before the engineer comes in the latter part of next week.
    1) Does the BT Infinity Hub connect to the BT phone socket by a standard ADSL modem/router to RJ11 phone socket cable? My current one is around 10 metres long which I connect from top floor where the computer is to phone socket (which is on middle floor).
    2) My nearest electrical plug is at least around 10 feet away from the BT socket. The BT socket is on the middle floor and nearest plug is on the bathroom landing, slightly level down. The BT engineer will have an extension, correct?
    3) My computer is brand new and is pretty powerful so I am not expecting the computer to disrupt the performance levels (in terms of speed) of the Infinity service, but is there anything (equipment that I can buy to enhance the speed or allow it to maximise the speed from Infinity before the engineer arrives?
    4) The current average speed I get is around 5.5mb. Occasionally I get between 7 and 8mb and last week for a day I was getting 10mb. I don't know how I did that but I moved my BT hub from bottom floor to next to my main computer that I use on the top floor and for a while I was getting above 10mb but reverted back to around half that. I am on service with maximum of 20mb, but never get anything close to that despite being in a pretty centrally located part of London and not all that far from the nearest exchange.
I have been told a maximum of 28mb with Infinity, but realistically what figure can I expect, given I usually get no more than 6mb on a service that advertises up to 20mb?
    Thanks

The engineer will fit their own data extension kit and will put it wherver you want it to go in the house (is 30m)

     The above shoud answer that.

Nope thats what the engineer does

We were told to expect a 29.5mb download but were getting the speeds below:
Hope this helps (we were getting 0.7MB before this with ADSl2+ BTW)

  • Talktalk fibre broadband is faster than BT!

For everyone's info. I was on BT infinity my average speed was around 12mbs, the highest was 15 but it would regularly drop to 10mbs. I was originally quoted 17-25 mbs by bt. When I began to complain they said the speed I should recieve was actually upto 17mbs. After many calls/emails to customer services to try and get the speed increased without success, I decided to leave bt. I chose talk talk fibre broadband as it was half the price. I had reservations as talk talk quoted a speed of 10mbs. I spoke to them they assured me the speed would be the same as talk talk. On installation I was just sent a talk talk router. My Bt setup was the bt infinity router and a white bt openreach modem. Once I was connected to talk talk I did a wireless speed check, it was 20mbs! Four days since installation and it's consistently 20mbs download and around 2.0 upload with no speed drops.
Whenever I complained to BT they always told me they wiring to my house was correct so the fault must be due to a fault in my house. I never touched the wiring it was installed by an engineer and I carefully described my wiring setup when reporting faults.
BT YOU LET ME DOWN. You had ample opportunity to fix this problem but you could not and your competitor can do a much better job using your own equipment and for half the price!
I wonder if the problem all along was the openreach modem. Maybe it was slowing down the speed. Who knows but the supposed experts gave me an inferior service.

    John46 said:-
your speeds are nothing to do with BT it is Openreach they provide an identical network to all isps
Openreach obviously provide the infrastructure but some isps can achieve higher speeds over the same network than others
(or choose to ) by tuning the line or something similar.
The isp must be able to influence the speed to some extent otherwise why are new customers told to wait a week or two
for their connection to stabilise, before they realise their optimum speed ?
Also I understand that some isps impose traffic shaping.

  • With new Brightbox2 router and fibre broadband, PC not shutting down on request

Yesterday connected to fibre broadband with new Brightbox2 router. Since then have been unable to Shut Down PC, although can select Sleep OK. Also cannot access System Manager via Ctrl-Alt-Del.

    Hi ,
Your change of router should not have changed any settings within your PC's operating system so this problem is most likely not related.
Have you tried holding the power button to force a reboot?
    Thanks

  • HT4262 What do I have to do to my Apple Extreme to switch it from a DSL broadband modem to a cable modem?

What do I have to do to my Apple Extreme to switch it from a DSL broadband modem to a cable modem?

Did you do the factory reset of the AE?? That is necessary. The AE keeps too many values from the last setup to easily move to a new configuration.
The quick method of factory reset.
Please look at Time Capsule (TC) as the same thing as the Extreme.
    Power down the TC.
Hold in reset. and keep holding it in. Be Gentle! It is a tiny surface mount switch with a plastic lever.. Attempting to push it out the other side of the TC will not make the switch turn on better.
(I fix TC and have several reset levers bent over and jammed or broken off).
Power on the TC.. remember with the reset held in.. this needs three arms.. a friend or power switch you can get to with your feet..
Keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and wait .. the boot will be slow as it deletes previous setting.. only from router side and pulls out the factory defaults. No files are deleted on the hard disk.. but the name of the TC may change.
The power cycle of the cable modem is very important.. it has to be off completely for 20min and sometimes longer.. overnight. Some battery backup version modems do not go off without removing the battery.. even unscrew the coax cable.
Make sure when you power up the modem only the AE is plugged in. Make sure the AE is set to router mode.. DHCP + NAT.. and is plugged in WAN port to the LAN port of the modem.
If you keep having trouble post again..
We need to know the model of the AE and firmware it is running.
Also what version utility on what OS you are setting it up from.

  • Fibre Broadband

Hi I'm trying to get fibre installed down my road. You have done most of East Tilbury but not the main road into my town. There is probably over 200 people who would love a faster broadband speed. Currently I'm getting 1.8 meg which is Way below the UK average. Could you please place another box so we can all get Inot the 21st century with ur fibre broadband. Now seeing as the government are giving you in excess of 1 billion to sort out this problem. And give everyone in this town Fibre. Hope to hear from someone soon. Steve.

This is a customer help customer forum your post does not go to BT
Anyway it is not BT Retail our ISP that has any control over the siting or installation of cabinets - that is controlled by openreach  although openreach are a member of the BT Group Bt Retail do not get any preferential treatment or information
I am sure that are numerous customers feel exactly the same way as you - I did before they installed my cabinet 2 years after my exchnage was upgraded for fibre

  • Fibre Broadband Availability

    Hello all,
I have recieved an email from openreach indicating that my local exchange, in Leicestershire, called Medbourne Greeen, has now been included in the rollout plans. Firstly, I already knew a while back that it was to be upgraded as part of a local authority upgrade; however, I recieved this email from openreach today, so is my exchange now part of the openreach commerial rollout instead? THis would be better for me if that is the case, as, through the local authority upgrade, my cabinet, number 3, serving my village, is not due to be upgraded at present, but again, I am not certain as I have very little information about the whole affair. It would be very irratating for my cabinet to miss out on the upgrade, considering the very high demnad for fibre broadband in the village. I hope you can help in working out the upgrade staus of my exchange and cabinet, and what, if anything, can be done to get my cabinet upgraded. I live in a village named Drayton. Thank you.

    Hi FibreBroadband,
Your exchange is being fibre enabled under the Superfast Leicestershire in partnership with Openreach (BTplc),
However your village comes under the Further investment – target completion by 2018 ie an area to receive a minimum 2Mbit/s by summer 2016 until further funding as it states Nevill Holt, Welham and Drayton are targeted for completion by 2018 subject to funding.
You can contact your BDUK programme or MP to question this.

  • House on 'New' Estate No Fibre Broadband (Exchange...

We are moving to a brand new house on a newish estate (I believe there have been houses the estate since 2011, or even before) but It doesn't seem as though Fibre broadband is available or that there is any way of finding out when it may be available without having a phone line installed first.
Why should I have a phone line installed at a possible cost and certainly a lengthy contract only the to be told Fibre won't be available?
I would happily get a new BT phone line installed (or let Open Reach install on behalf of BT Retail) and continue with BT line rental, broadband, calls and TV IF I knew if fibre would be available in the next few months. If Fibre isn't going to be available then there are other companies offering standard broadband and TV deals, Sky being the most likely at the moment.
    Exchange is SLGTP

Up until recently you could email Openreach and ask when your cabinet was likely to be upgraded however Openreach are no longer giving out that information, instead they are replying:-
Thank you for your contact to us. Please note that we will not be responding to you by email but, would like to point you to the Openreach Superfast Fibre website and the FAQ section that will provide answers to the most commonly asked questions. It will also provide links to those service providers that sell fibre broadband at the moment so you can check if your particular line is enabled.
    http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/where-and-when/
So in short, you just need to keep checking to see if your cabinet has been up graded.
If you use this checker it will tell what cabinet you are on and what services it can receive. If you do not have a phone line, which is the most accurate check, use the address checker. It is more accurate than the post code checker which covers a larger area and may include a number of cabinets.

  • Switching to BT ( Infinity)

    Hello,
So I was thinking about switching my broadband over to BT, at the moment I have AOL wireless broadband and the speeds I get are shocking, at peak speeds I can get 0.2mbps so I cannot watch Iplayer and struggle to watch youtube video's without letting them buffer. I wanted to know, if I switched to BT and most probably Infinity I would get the downloads speeds that there speedchecker says my line could handle, for infinity this was in the 50mb dl area and for normal broadband it was estimated at 3mb which I know can vary slightly, this is because I don't want to switch over to a slightly more expensive package and there be no change at all.
Any information would be much appreciated.

if those are the figures given you should be near to those figures

  • My new fibre broadband not working

Hey all connected my new fibre speed broadband and its not connecting to the internet why? It says online that my broadband is now activated which the activation date is today the 6th. But no internet light

Have you contacted Sky and told them about the issue as advised?
Most likely there has been a problem when BT Openreach switched your line over to the fibre cabinet and neither Sky or BT will be aware of it unless you tell them.
Faults and mistakes do happen, but whatever you decide to do, you need to speak to Sky.

  • Fibre Broadband. Frustratingly slow.

I've been having very erratic broadband speeds since moving over to Fibre 2 months ago. It's got to the stage now that  I wonder why I ever signed up for this product. http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4196885356 If this poor quality of service (and that's exactly what it is) continues I'll be cancelling my subscription for TV, Phone & Broadband.

Personally i don't have Sky Fibre im with PlusNet(for the sole reason that i can use my own router),i did have Sky's normal broadband for 2 and half years with only 2 issues (both were solved quickly).
Sky fibre does have its issues most of which are down to the router Sky supply (Sr102 Sky Hub)it has an unshielded internal power supply that causes issues with its wireless performance and seems to limit the hubs wireless speed to around 20mbps even if your sync speed is much higher.
With regards to Virgin i should add that i had their service at a previous address form the time they where NTL and the service was almost flawless( i think i had 3 or 4 issues in 6+ years),in the recent years though they appear to be experienceing issues with speed(my business line should be 1gbps but the most i've ever got was 250mbps and they are unable to fix it).
Its also worth noting that any posts made on company forums are usually customers complaining about the service and usually represent a very small amount of overall customers so please don't base your decision solely on what is posted here or elsewhere.

  • Can't get router working after switching from DSL to Cable broadband???

    I have a WRT54G v.5
I just switched from dsl service to cable broadband. I can't get my router to work. I hooked it back up just as the dsl modem used to be. there is an ethernet cable that goes from the cable modem to the router. then an eithernet cable that goes from the router to the computer. this does not work. If I just take the router out of the loop and run an eithernet cable straight from the cable modem to the computer it works fine. so the cable internet service is working fine up to the modem. The router is the problem. I have restarted both the computer and the router. so that rules that out. can you help me?

Open the setup page of the router by launching an Internet Explorer Browser and type the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field empty and provide password as admin and click on ok.On the main setup page the ""Internet Connection Type"" should be on ""Obtain IP Automatically - DHCP “. Click on the Save Settings button. Now click on the sub tab ""MAC address clone"".- Click on enable.Click Clone & click save settings
Check WAN Ip on Status page of router .... If getting Valid Ip .... try going online...If not ... power cycle for 4-5 minutes & then, try going online.

  • Switching to BT Infinity and new e-mail problem

Just ordered BT Infinity with an installation date in three weeks, I am switching from Talk Talk. When setting up order I put in my desired btinternet.com and this was accepted. I understand that BT will use this to communicate with me over my order. However I can't log into BT mail (either on line or via Thunderbird), I just get an "incorrect user name or password" message. My e-mail address and password work fine for accessing my account on the BT site.
Is this a fault or is there usually a delay in setting up the e-mail side of things for new customers? Just wondering whether the email won't be active until installation date which is a concern if BT want to contact me.
    Many thanks
