Sync keywords?

Hello,
I am new to LR.  I believe this is part of the point, but I want to be certain before I undertake the next step of my project.
I have just created a catalog with all of my work over the past 25+ years.  The photos themselves are located on an external drive (actually 3 of 'em, but I only will use this drive as my master).  I used the Standard Build in my catalog creating a 25gb preview file, which I anticipated after trying different options.  However, I have to now apply keywords to this mountain of images.
My first and most important question is this: I am about to travel and while I can work on the computer, attaching the external drive would be cumbersome on a plane.  If I apply keywords to the catalog files, will those keywords then be synced to the images on the hard drive when I reconnect the drive to Lightroom?
and that raises a second question:  Are the keywords then embedded in the images so that if I create a new catalog on a second computer with the same images now copied from the external drive to that computer, when I create the catalog, will the keywords appear in the new catalog?
Thanks for your assistance on so basic a question!

"If I apply keywords to the catalog files, will those keywords then be synced to the images on the hard drive when I reconnect the drive to Lightroom?"
Yes.
"Are the keywords then embedded in the images so that if I create a new catalog on a second computer with the same images now copied from the external drive to that computer, when I create the catalog, will the keywords appear in the new catalog?"
No. All metadata including keywords is stored in the catalogue (a database) in which you entered it. However, if you want to embed or write the metadata into the images, you need to tell Lightroom to do it - use Metadata > Save Metadata. This includes all IPTC metadata including keywords, and adjustment metadata, but there are things it doesn't include (flags, stacks, history steps...).
But if you want to create a new catalogue on another computer, with the same images, the best way would be to copy the catalogue from the first computer or use options such as File > Export as Catalog which clones the catalogue.
For travelling, there is also the newer option of smart previews. It might be a bit much for you right now (or maybe not - there are plenty of questions more basic than the one you pose!), but I recently travelled and took on the laptop only my catalogue and smart previews for all photos (no standard or 1:1 previews). This meant I could add keywords and other metadata - but I could also make some adjustments to the images and email copies of them, etc. When I returned home, these adjustments would apply to the originals.

  • Syncing Keywords between Libraries

I have Aperture 3.0.3 on both my iMac and MacBook Pro and want to sync the keyword list between the libraries. Is it possible to sync the libraries and have this happen, or is it more complicated?
    Thanks -

Even though the license allows installation on two computers Aperture very much is a single-user app. (Most unfortunately) Apple has not yet seen fit to facilitate synch between two libraries even though it is an essential need requested by many.
To sync the keyword list between the libraries I would use identical keywords in both Libraries - - but it would unfortunately be a manual process.
Please add your voice to the chorus requesting single-user synch between two Libraries by going to "Feedback" under the Aperture menu. Note that multi-user synch is an entirely different potentially quite expensive beast.

  • Sync Keywords from other meta data

Is there anyway to sync or auto-generate keywords based on the city, state, country, etc? So if I have the city field populated for example it will automatically add that to my keyword for the photo.
    Thanks,
    Ken

Run Consolidate on the old computer, and then copy the entire iTunes folder to the new computer.  This will make your new library have exactly the same data.
The reason this works is because the iTunes folder contains not only the content, but also the library data such as Play Count, Last Played, etc.
In fact, there is no other way to do it.

  • Syncing keywords from outsourced, exported photos

I've finally took on a remote assistant to keyword my images. I've created a collection that I need to keyword. I export the pictures to very small jpg's, put them in a dropbox folder for her to work on and she updates the keywords on those pictures. The last bit sucks: I then open Lightroom and Bridge and copy/paste keywords for each individual picture. I have no doubt in my mind that I'm doing it the (very) long way, but I couldn't figure out a diffrerent one. I'm talking about batches of 70 images (if that matters at all). How can I automate this? She works on a PC and also uses Lightroom. Thanks!

I would just export a portion of your catalog for her work to work on, then import it when she's done. Make sure you don't edit any of those pictures while she's keywording them, lest those edits be overwritten when re-importing. i.e.
    Step 1:
    Step 2:
Of course, backup your catalog before doing this, especially the first times, until you get the hang of it...

  • LR2 Question syncing keywords and/or Metadata.

I am shooting RAW and import the files into my catalog as DNG.
After adding keywords and changing metadata to all the DNG files I would like to apply those changes back to my original RAW files.
Can I do that easily? Maybe adding XMP files to the same directories as the original RAW files?
Once I have the RAW files tagged with the same keywords and metadata I plan to archive them and delete from my disk.
    Thank you,

For your first question - You can select the folder containing the files then use the Save Metadata command from Folder panel context menu (see attached screen shot). Alternatively, you can select the actual files then use Save Metadata to file command (Ctrl/Cmd+S). This latter method is much slower.
For you second question - not using your current workflow. That said, if you changed your workflow slightly it's possible. To do it you ned to import your raw files without converting to DNG. Next, you apply keywords, metadata, etc. then use method described above for saving back to file (this creates the XMP sidecars). Now select all of the images in Grid view and convert the raw files to DNG (Convert to DNG from Library menu).
The final step would be to archive the raws plus XMP sidecars, this will need to be done outside of Lightroom.

  • Editing and sharing custom metadata/keywords through Adobe Drive in Adobe Bridge

I am part of a four-person video production unit operating within a local governmental entity. We are currently using four licenses of Adobe Master Collection CS5, and are about to get access to dedicated SAN storage.
We would like each user to have the ability to assign specific keywords to any given video clip (or remove keywords from clips) within Adobe Bridge, and have the three other users see the same results. I've noticed that Bridge alone will allow for keywords to be added or removed, but this list is specific to each user. Importing one list into other users' profiles is a start, but would no longer work, once keywords are added or taken away.
The overview page for Adobe Drive 3 says that it, "allows users to edit and view custom metadata/properties through Adobe Drive in Adobe Bridge," but I haven't found any explanation in either the website, forums, or user's guides that delves any farther into this area. If we incorporate Adobe Drive/Bridge into our workflow, will we be able to share/sync keywords between users? Is there some other (affordable) solution that would let us do this?
Thanks for any insight you might be able to offer.
    Chuck

    Hi,
    Thanks for sharing your case.
The keywords you mentioned is XMP metadata, if all your digital assets are managed by ADEP CQ DAM service, you can use AD3 with built-in ADEP connector to communicate with the DAM server, then, I think it can meet your requirement, it means, the keywords can be set by one user through metadata panel in Bridge, and can be viewed by other users.
for custom properites, it's different from XMP metadata, it refers to the properties of one asset which is managed by a Content Management service. users have to use another UI to edit/view them in Br after AD3 is installed.
here are some requirements to use it.
    1) CMIS 1.0 compiliant server should be used to manage all your digital assets
    2) use the built-in CMIS with AD3 to connect to the server.
if other kind of servers are used, you should develope a custom connector through AD SDK to enable custom properties feature as well as some other handler required by AD SDK
    thanks

  • Problems with keywords when using 2 directories.

Pardon my french, I'm Norwegian...  ;-)
I have LR3.6 and have a folder structure I'm pleased with, I also use keywords on the images.
I want one directory with B/W and one in color, in order to work in a directory where only B/W images appear. I think it's easier to see the images that work in B/W this way...
I have copied the LRCAT file into a new folder. When I open LR I choose the directory to be loaded, B/W or Color. This works OK. When importing new pictures I copy images into the desired directory (eg. Colors?) with the Default Develop settings. When I use the B/W directory I sync the Color directory with the B/W Default Develop settings.
I've imported the same Keyword list in both directories, but the problem is that the keywords are not included on the pictures when I sync. The images have the same filename so it should be possible to retrieve / sync keywords as well?
Is there anyone out there who can help me, either with another solution where I do not need 2 directories or how I can import keywords to the other directory?

    My Lords, Kings and Gurus!
dj_paige and johnbeardy:  I'm impressed with your quick and accurate response and I'm grateful for all the help. I hope I have not offended anyone here. In our local photoclub we have one guy that is almost as good as you guys. I don't know him but I think his name is Scott Kel... or somthing like that....
    Have a nice day!

  • Remotely editing keywords

I know that I can export my photos from iPhoto 08 to flickr, myspace, etc.; and I can add keywords and comments to them, but I have no way of getting that data off of the web, and back into iPhoto. My friends all say I'm nuts for worrying about this, because they say that flickr, myspace, etc. is so popular, it's not going to go away. While that's true, what if your account "accidently" gets deleted?
I've looked and looked, but haven't really found a way to sync keywords between a web site, and my local machine. Does anyone know if this is even possible? I'm running iPhoto 08.

The .Mac account has nothing involved in metadata. That's all taken care of with iPhoto. If you're looking to backup and save your photos the best solution, IMO, is to backup the entire iPhoto Library package to an external HD and use a backup application like Synk Standard to make incremental backups after every use of the library.
Also as a way to protect against loss of all your organizational effort due to a damaged database file see the tip at the end of my signature below.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • IPhoto '09 version 8.1.2. can two macs have the same library?

I am running iPhoto '09 version 8.1.2 and have an iMac and a MacAir. How do I have one photo library, say on the iMac, that is then replicated onto the MacAir?

There are two ways to "sync" the two libraries.
#1 - with the two Macs connected download and use  SyncPhotos
    Here's how it works:
it compares the databases and/or album.xml files of Libraries A and B.
the files in A that are not in B are imported into B by copying the original files from A into B's Import folder.
it then does the same for B.
    metadata is not copied.
It can be used to just copy from A to B and not sync both ways if desired. It will work with 2 libraries that are different versions, i.e. between an iPhoto 08 and iPhoto 09 library.  This method does not require you to make the decision of which photos to sync.
NOTE:  this method does not sync keywords, titles, ranking or descriptions.
#2 -  download and use the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager to copy the Events in Library A that are not in LIbrary B to Library B.  Then select those Events in Library B that are not in A and copy to A.
This method requires you to make the determination which photos (Events) to copy between libraries.  It does copy all metadata, keywords, titles, etc. as well as Faces and Places.

  • Any Flickr Export plugin available for Aperture 3?

I was happy to see Flickr included in Aperture 3, but to say the least, it really *****.
The worst thing is that it applies my own keywords to all the uploaded images. I don't want the (full) names of peoples in my pictures to display at Flickr and having my local-language keywords on my images probably doesn't help Flickr where most users are speaking english (compared to my local language).
Basically I wish the Flickr export feature would allow me to either "not sync keywords" or modify my keywords to determine if I want them exported or not - like Lightroom does.

Thanks for the warning Martin. I already know from iPhoto's flickr export that you gotta be careful. I guess the iPhoto/Aperture flickr export is great for those wanting REAL simplicity, but if you want to adjust just one or two settings, it's a no-go and it kinda *****
I hope there's an AP3 flickr export plugin out there? I would be willing to spend $10 on it.

  • Just wondering how the best way to work using 2 computers and 2 people.

If you have 2 computers, a main one doing creative changes and the other person on a second computer doing metadata and keywords, is it possible to keep them synced, so the keyword info etc is kept up to date on the main computer? Would it just be to export the new keywords for that catalogue each time?
It is a big Library of 300,000 images that needs to be keyworded to find images easily. I am new to this but trying to help someone sort out their Library.
    Many thanks for your help.

I don't know the answer. But here's what I do know:
    Brainstorming, not well-organized thoughts...:
In general, you need to make sure the image developer is not working on the same images at the same time as the keyworder. Lightroom considers keywords and develop settings on a par (and will overwrite both or neither when syncing, importing, ...), so however you do it, unless you discover some clever workaround, the 2 people will need to coordinate which images are off-limits while the other is working on them. That said, here are some ideas:
    * Figure out a way to strip settings/metadata of one type before doing the sync (e.g. from the xmp).
    * Save develop settings (as snapshot), sync with keyworder's versions, restore develop settings (by re-selecting the snapshot). Unfortunately, this would need to be done on a per-image basis, since there is no way to apply a snapshot in any automated or bulk fashion.
Note: this would be an easy plugin, but would have some (probably deal-breaking) limitations:
    1. Save develop settings in ram.
    2. Read xmp from keyworder (which will update keywords, but also overwrite develop settings).
    3. Restore develop settings from ram.
The problem is that the SDK is missing a few develop settings, e.g. crop is missing, as is tone-curve enable/disable, and orientation. So, if developer had changed any of these things, they would not be restored after syncing keywords from xmp - not good, and one of the reasons I lobby with Adobe to make develop settings (available to plugins) complete.
If plugins had access to snapshots for applying, that would also make a plugin solution a piece of cake.
    Another idea:
    - Export jpegs for keywording, with a special token in the filename, like "for-keywording" (I recommend PreviewExporter for fastest exporting).
    - Use John Beardy's Syncomatic to synchronize keywords from jpeg to original.
Optional, instead of exporting, just make a physical copy using OS, and have keyworder import those and apply keywords. All else would be the same (syncomatic).
(consider deleting exports/copies created just for keywording purpose, after syncing keywords...).
This would also be a piece of cake for SQLiteroom, if you were willing to do some SQL+Lua programming:
    - Use SQL to query 2ndary catalog with keywords.
    - Use Lua to assign keywords to photos in master catalog.

  • Ability to adjust multiple images at the same time as in Bridge

Why the extra step of having to sync develop settings? Why not have lightroom's develop module work like Camera Raw? I would like the ability to select my main image and any others that need the same adjustments, then make adjustments to the one while the others are being updated at the same time just like in ACR. Please add this simple feature - it really saves time and is consistent with the way ACR works.
Also, just realized that syncing metadata does not sync keywords. This needs to be addressed ASAP. Just wondering how the engineers overlooked this! It should do it automatically or as an option in the sync metadata options box that pops up when syncing.
Overall, I really like lightroom and see a lot of potential once it's totally dialed. Please Adobe keep it coming with the updates!
    Thanks for listening-

You can already do this a couple of ways...use Auto-Sync or Quick Develop.

  • Best photo sharing site to use with aperture?

what is the best photo-sharing site to use with aperture?
    flickr and flickr export?
or are there more capable alternatives?
is there any solution to sync tags and keywords between aperture and the photo sharing site?
    thanks for any advice

i was wondering what the best service is in combination with aperture, the best service on its own for me is flickr, i like there online interface a lot.
so there is no way to have the same functionality with aperture as with iphoto from ilife08?
the demo on the .mac website shows they simply upload a gallery to .mac web gallery like here: http://gallery.mac.com/emily_parker
now when i export a web gallery from aperture its just a stupid web page with none of the interactive functions of a web gallery
but unless aperture can publish to .mac like iphoto can i will probably stick with flickr, flickr export for aperture seems also the most capable plug in for the moment compared to the export plugins for smugmug or other services.
i was really hoping to be able to use .mac like advertised with iphoto or have someone here suggest some other great service to use with aperture, i would especially like to be able to sync keywords both ways.

  • How can I sync Bridge between multiple computers at work with keywords/collections/search?

We've been trying to find a digital asset management platform at work for a while now and I recently came across Bridge (we have the Creative Cloud). It's perfect! Except we're all on a bunch of different computers and would need to be able to search the same keywords/collections all from the same server (the photos are in many different folders though). Is there a way to be able to sync all keywords etc on multiple computers? Or if someone opens Bridge and can search right away without having to make all the keywords persistent by finding each photo and clicking on it? We're all on the same Creative Cloud team.

I actually did already create a book with all the files in it, but I couldn't figure out how that was helpful. The hyperlink panel doesn't seem to have any "book" options (unless I'm looking in the wrong place?) and just linking to the different files (after creating the book) didn't have any different results than linking to the files before I created the book.
I thought maybe linking to the different files in the book would work if I could export the whole book to pdf at once (which would be super-helpful in and of itself), but that doesn't seem to be an option either.
I guess what I'm asking is for you to elaborate on what to do after creating the book.
    Thanks!

  • MetaData Keywords, - How do they work? How can I get them to sync so that my colleague can see them!

    Hello,
I work with a couple of other people who use Adobe Bridge (CS2) on Windows XP computers. We have a extensive amount of photographs that we are trying to organise. To do this we want to add some kind of tag like say, 'People, grass....etc' so that they are searchable by this info as well as there file name. I've played with adding to the Description on the Metadata window and then applying it as well as adding keywords. Although the keywords work for me (i.e. are searchable-come up on my results), my colleague on her computer gets nothing up on the search, - we've tried all the search options, keywords, all metadata....etc. Vice-versa, she's added loads of keywords to photo's but when I search them by these keywords - I get absolutely nothing
We are both accessing the same photo's folder on the same server. Can anyone help? It's driving us mad. We really need to get this kind of thing working! Any suggestions????? Is there some kind of syncing setup we need to do??? We don't have a manual as thats with IT. If anyone can help, or even offer links on tutorials, we would be extremely grateful
    Any assistance, greatly appreciative.

I remember something similar months ago and did a quick search. Hope this link describes your problem, as it does offer a solution.
