Syncing DAT audio to a edited timeline

Our project is shot in 24P advanced.
Because of a deadline we had to use audio from the camera.
Now we are ready to sync audio with the DAT tapes.
I am very ignorant to this process.
Will I have to go from clip to clip in the edited timeline syncing up audio or is there a more efficient way to attack this process.
Any help or thoughts will be greatly received...

Hi Bob-
Unless you sync jammed timecode at the shoot, you will have to sync up the pld-fashioned way - slates. I am assuming here that you slated every shot...

  • How to sync separate audio .wav after editing in timeline

Newby editor here.  I shot a 10 min video using both the camera mic and a separate digital recorder. I  created a Premier project and edited the footage (8 separate .mov files) before I realized that I hadn't synced the footage to the higher quality Zoom audio file (1 wav. file as I left it turned on).  Now that the project is edited is there any way to sync the footage to the individual clips?  I've tried using the "Merge" capabilities in Premier Pro 8.1 but that only syncs to the entire video file, not the individual section that I've edited into the film.
Do I have to go back and since the files and then re-edit each clip?
    Any suggestions gladly accepted.

The simplest way I can think of to solve this is to export out a new clip using the video from the original and the audio from the Zoom.  Then do a Replace on the original in the bin with the newly exported clip.  All the edits remain intact, but using the new clip with the Zoom audio.

  • Loss of audio panning effects with timeline audio of Sync type "Stream"

I have a Flash animation which is loaded into a parent master Flash file. In the animation, there is voice audio embedded in the timeline which is synced with a character animation. The Sync type of the audio is set to Stream, which is essential for the mouth movements to match the audio. When I try to pan the voice audio so that it comes only out of the right speaker, it sounds fine during preview playback, but after publishing, all of the panning effects are lost. If I change the Sync type to "Event" or "Start", the panning effects work fine, but the audio is terribly out of sync with the animation.
The source audio is a mono audio file. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. I've tried changing the publish settings for both the parent and the child animation Flash files to be Speech, Mp3 mono, Mp3 Stereo and just about every other option, with no desirable results. I have also tried publishing and running the animation without loading it through the parent file, also no results.
Is there some kind of rule in Flash about Stream versus Event audio and panning? Do I need to use a stereo audio source file? I don't currently have access to the original audio files, but I can get them. Are all Stream type sounds automatically converted to mono at runtime or something??
Thank you thank you thank you

According to the Adobe installation information the trial version of Premiere Elements 11 is fully functional and the watermark is only present until a licence code is purchased.
I have edited AVI footage from a camcorder using the program with no problems (and no loss of audio sync) and the watermark is also present with this.
The odd placement of audio and video was caused by my not dragging the clip carefully enough.
What is odd is that the clip plays completely normally using WIndows Media Player and VLC Media player so I would expect Premiere Elements to be able to handle it without problems.
I think that there is some sort of bug in Premiere Elements' handling of mpe4 files (both in versions 10 and 11) rather than there being anything wrong with my computer.
Is there some way of communicating this directly to the Adobe programers ?
I enclose screenshots of the project settings:

  • Sync Music audio with Video Audio PE10

    Hi.
I am new to Premiere elements 10 (Changed from Corel to Adobe, so i'm not new to video editing, but I'm not used to PE10).
I am filming a lot of my daughters Circus performances, so very often I find the music number used at the performance and merge that with the video audio in the project.
But I have a problem syncing the music from the audio track on the video with the seperate music track.
So to specify: I want both Audio tracks running at the same time, so that I keep the clapping and the whisteling from the audience, but get the better quality of the music from the external file merged with the music in the video-audio-clip.
Is there a special tool or can someone help me with a special tecnique?
    Regards Settemand

Along with the instructions offered above, when nudging the Audio, I would make sure that Snap is OFF, as Snap will try to align your Audio with the beginning (Head), or end (Tail), of you Video Clips. That is useful for many editing operations, but for nudging Audio will frustrate you. The Snap function is a toggle with the S key. Just do not forget to turn it back ON, when done.
Also, though the Soundtrack Audio Track seems to be the ideal location for your extra music, some users have experienced issues, when using it, or the Narration Audio Track. While it seems that those issues are Project-specific, and those Tracks often work well, to keep from being tripped up later, I recommend putting your music on a free Audio Track, such as Audio 2 - just to be safe.
Also, with either an Audio, or Video Track, you can Zoom IN/OUT horizontally with the Timeline Zoom slider, AND can also Zoom IN/OUT vertically, by going to the Track's Header (where the Track Name is located), then hovering your cursor over the little line between the Track, until it changes to an equal sign with up/down arrows, then click+drag, to enlarge the Track (and the Clip display) vertically. I find that this makes viewing the Audio Waveform Display easier, and the peaks are more obvious. When done, you can just reverse that operation to Zoom OUT on the Track vertically, so that it looks like it did, before you started.
Good luck, and this FAQ Entry might be useful, though it talks about OOS (Out Of Sync) Audio, the functions are the same for syncing additional Audio: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/436751?tstart=0

  • What is the most versatile way to conform production audio after the edit has started?

This problem keeps coming up on various projects and I have yet to find the best way to recover from it: A project will be synced with incomplete production audio. Either it will be delivered to post late or an AE brought it in with the incomplete number of channels.
I'm trying to find the best way to conform audio to an edit that has already been cut with all channels accessible in the timeline. FYI, the audio I would need to conform usually has the same timecode as the audio already in the cut. It sort of works to match frame and resync to the original nested/merged clips but if, for example, the audio is 5 channels the audio shows up in the timeline nested as 2 channels. This means every time I need to do a production audio edit I have to match back to the nested clip and edit there instead of the actual edit itself.
I know I must be missing something here that could make this really easy to recover from. Often the circumstances in which this happens are completely out of my control.

If the channels always matched, I'd say the easiest would probably be to just replace the old audio on the hard drive with the new, delete all Cache files and rebuild.
Given the difference in channels, I think the easiest solution may simply be to not begin editing until you have final audio.
Failing that, you just might be stuck with a tedious mess.

  • Audio clicks on edits

I'm getting audio clicks at the point of an edit, not all the time but about 20% of the time. I think it may be a bit rate issue but cant seem to find the answer. Key framing an audio ramp on so many cuts is a pain.
My captured audio is 48khz 24 bit imported from DVD ram location sound. I have then made merged clips to sync up the video and audio. (I now know that FCPro isn't very happy with this workflow but thats how many features work).
My sequences show an audio format of 32 bit floating point but I have set the sequence setting to 24bit.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I have read quite a lot on the forum that FC runs best when pic and audio is captured together in the same file.
I am cutting a feature that shot HD but sep sound on a diva DVD ram. We also shot with 2 cams. I have imported all the wav file and captured the video (HDCam pro). Synch using Merge is ok but I want to sub clip these so there is just the take without the extra sound recorded before and after a take. If I want to make multiclips for the 2 cam setups then I find I have to make a 3 way multi with 2 pics and 1 sound. If use sync merged clips the multiclip runs out of sync. Match frame doesn't behave as you would like, it should give you the multi cam clip but instead gives the original clip.
On viewing the edit, say a 20 min reel, it often has sync drift. Particularly using my kona output. Stopping and playing agin solves this but you don't want to do that in a viewing, so I export a cut before viewing. Takes a while on a HD project.
I also get these audio clicks on edits, much like an avid/lightworks use to.
My system is also slowing quite a bit and will crash if I flick along the timeline too fast. I keep breaking the project down as it quickly goes over 130mb once I have 6 x 20 min reels in a cut. It also take a while to load first thing or after a crash. I'm not sure how big a project can/should be?
We also shot 2.35 on the 1.77 HD so I have been putting a mask on to crop to the 2.35 frame but find that the mast is in the wrong possition on any multi clip shots. It just jumps up on cuts to these shots! So I have returned to a monitor with black tape to show the 2.35.
Al in all, it just isn't as streamlined as the avid is in this workflow. However, FC is much better in many other areas.

  • Syncing multi audio clips to video

I need to sync multiple audio clips with a video clip.  I have footage that was shot that had multiple people in the scene so multiple mics boom etc.  However whenever I select the video clip and the 4 audio clips and click syncronize clips it only syncronizes one audio with the clip?
How do I get all the audio clips synced with the video clip?

    DJ Duke wrote:
Yeah, I did open the sync clip and the audio files are there ( in a different unique sync timeline), but that doesn't help because I need top open them in the regular timeline I use for editing the project and opnly one audio file shows up.
Any suggestions how to fix this or work around?
This is the way it works. The synchronized clip is a compound clip. You add it to your timeline. If necessary, you can open it by double-clicking it in the timeline, make the necessary edits, and hit the back button (the little triangle at the top left of the timeline) to return to the project timeline.
If you do not want it collapsed that way, but you rather insist on seeing all the connected audio clips directly in your project, then you have two options:
    1) select the compound clip in the timeline and choose "Clip->Break Apart Clip Items"
    or
    2) open the compound clip, select everything, copy; and then paste wherever you want it in your project.

  • I just updated to new final cut pro x 10.1.1 and i am also on mavericks so but on my editing timeline i was trying to color grade using magic bullet looks but i am having problem with it. when it comes back to tcp x it's black.

I just updated to the new final cut pro x 10.1.1 and i am also on mavericks so but on my editing timeline i was trying to color grade using magic bullet looks but i am having problem with it. When i send a sample to MBL and color grade it , it comes back to final cut pro x all black even after render. By the way on the MBL i am using the GPU rendering, I used before like 4months ago and it was fine. And i don't like to use the CPU because it very slow.

What is the frame rate of the project? At what frame rate was the media recorded? What frame size?
    What are the audio settings?
What are the specs of the machine, in particular how much RAM, how is the hard drive connected, etc.?
If possible, post screenshots of the inspector for the project.
It could be related to the audio frequency?

  • Work flow for syncing separate Audio files with Video files in FCP

It may be too late for me to use this workflow that I want with my current project, but I need to figure out what it is anyway for future reference.
Right now I'm editing a movie which is near completion. When we recorded the movie, the camera's deck recorded reference audio from the sound guy at 48k @ 16bit. This audio also went through an additional set of preamps which added a small amount of noise. So we don't want to use the reference audio because of it's low resolution and less clean audio. The sound guy recorded straight to his deck at 48k @ 24bit, besides the better resolution, his audio is noticeably better.
The camera deck and 'clapper' (I think that's what you call it) were not connected or synced. So the video files and the soundsguy's audio files are slightly different lengths, but at least have a 'clap sound' to manually sync to. And I don't mean that the audio and video files won't play in sync with each other, I mean that the soundguy always started recording before the camera, so his audio files have slightly different start and stop times.
Could I have synced the audio files with the video files before I started editing this project? If so, could it have been in the way that the soundguy's audio would be connected to my video files while editing? What would that procedure have been?
My current workflow right now is I have my finished sequence, I change the bit rate to 24 in Sequence Settings, and start manually dragging the soundguy's files to the sequence for every little edited clip. This is going to take forever, there are 99 scenes in this movie. Anyway, at the end of the day these sequences are exported as .omf files and imported into Pro Tools for audio post production.
I was not thinking to figure this out before I started editing the movie, this is unfortunate, a newb move in a decent production.
Anyway, I don't know if there is a standard for this situation or if I just opened up a can of worms for many possible workflows. Please comment if you have experience in this area or please refer me to any reading material.
    Thanks for your time!
    -Monty

The normal workflow (besides manually syncing up before editing!)
is to have ' some ' way of auto syncing the clips.
So you must have common timecode.
With external audio, you can slave the cam's TC to the TC output of the BWF recorder.
Then you can use BWF / QT merge (one of my apps) to sync them, or use Sync 'n Link.
    (another third party application)
If it is not possible cause you're shooting with a cam without a TC input, you can record the TC output on one of the audio tracks of your cam, and use FCPauxTC reader to decode the beeps and translate that to QT TC, and again use the former tricks to sync them.
It is difficult when you have never done it, but very easy once you get the hang of it, and it saves a huge amount of time to do it right from the start.
Have a look at the FCP aux TC reader here:

  • Final outputed file is out of sync w/ audio

the audio is in sync with the video on the timeline play thru....so then I output to H.2641080p 24 ...AAC audio out...but then the finished .mp4 is out of sync by a mili second or so...what can I do? thx.

Is the Audio source muxed MPEG?
I have encountered similar, and what makes it insidious is that when the Timeline is played, things seem to be in good sync. Export introduces some OOS.
When I first encountered this, I tried timing the OOS in the Export, and then altering the sync in the Timeline. However, no matter how much I "adjusted" it, there always seemed to be OOS upon Export.
The best that I ever found was to rip the Audio, and then do a Save_As to PCM/WAV, replacing the muxed Audio stream. In all but two instances (never did get those into perfect sync), that worked OK, though did require the additional steps.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - while it is only a theory, since there is a different block size with MPEG Audio vs MPEG Video, I suspect that might account for some of the issues. However, that does NOT explain why the Timeline seems good, but Export is not, other than a compounding of the block size differential. Also, with a muxed file, I would think that the differences in Encoding would NOT exist, as they would with separate Audio and Video streams. I have never heard a good theory on WHY PrPro has issues with muxed MPEG. Maybe Colin can come up with one? BTW - Encore has issues too.

  • Can you synch audio with already edited footage?

    Hi there,
I've been given a half edited project to finish off in Premier Pro, but the problem is there are quite a lot of pieces of footage that have not been synched up to their separate recorded sound! I am very new to Premier (was on FCP and Avid) but I am wondering if there is any way you can synch separate audio with already edited footage on the timeline? If not, it means I will pretty much have to scrap all the work that has been done and I REALLY don't want to do that because it's a lot!
    Any help is really appreciated!!
I am using Premier 6.0.5 on a Mac Book Pro

    You can't.
It's not that big a deal, you're going to get the same result applying compression (or any other effect) after the fact.

  • Multicam source sequence - audio offset does not work when syncing via audio

Working double sound with Canon 5D footage and syncing via audio is a big help, but the camera sound is one frame ahead of the video.
Merge clips requires each v/a clip pair be selected individually AND can't be slipped after merging - so that's no good.
Create multi-cam source sequence works a treat AND offers an audio offset BUT that does not appear to work when syncing via audio (I understand why you might think we wouldn't need it but...)
    Unlesss I'm missing something?

I have the same problem. Syncing video via audio in multicam works perfectly on my 3 cam shoot but audio offset does not work. Had to do that on the sequence timeline afterwards.

  • Fcp8 sync wih audio sequencer

Does Final Cut Pro 8 send sync data (smpte or MIDI Time Code) in order for it to be synched with an audio sequencer (like Logic, Nuendo or PT).
It could be internal sync (through an IAC Driver bus) or externally through MIDI Time Code (for instance), that is in the case you would need 2 computers to do the job, with one dedicated to audio.
    Thanks for you answer.
    C.

Funny, I never had an answer to this one. On any Forum. Is this so weird?

I can't see the Audio Waveforms in the timeline. No triangle button to click. Just switched from FCP. Help!

When I click on the wrench or right click to customize the box, these are the options I'm given.  I don't see waveform.  I've edited in Adobe Audition for years, and see the waveform panels in all the Premiere Pro tutorials, am I missing something?  (besides a brain?)

  • Syncing Data...

I sat down this afternoon, going through my many apps, figuring out the best way to sync data files between the iPad and my MacBook Pro. Different apps have different ways of syncing data files, some have multiple ways - I've been testing these methods and find the following procedures available. Most apps use one of the three, some use two or all three.
    1) Apps like Pages and Numbers sync files via iTunes. This means I drag the source file on my mbp to the app tab in the iPad's devices in iTunes. These files go in the "File Sharing" panel for the appropriate app. They sync to the iPad where I can edit them and later have them sync back via some procedure (in Pages and Numbers, I have to tap the icon to copy to iTunes - or I can use iDisk). Back on the mbp, I go back to iTunes, find the (intermediate) file in the Pages app tab and click the "save to.." button to put the file back to the source folder. If I later edit the file on the mbp, I have to drag it back to iTunes (indicate that I want to overwrite the existing copy there) and then sync it to the iPad. On the iPad I have to click the icon to "Copy from iTunes". This adds the revised file to the list of documents on the iPad's Pages, which still displays the old version alongside the newly imported edited version.
    2) Using iDisk or DropBox. From Pages on iPad, I can choose to "save to.." iDisk. I then choose the folder/subfolder for the destination folder on iDisk. For apps that use DropBox, I would do a similar thing. Later, once iDisk syncs to the mbp (either manually or via timed sync), I can access the file on my mbp's iDisk folder (this assumes I chose the option to have a clone of iDisk on my mac, otherwise I would have to access the file from the cloud manually). I can open the file in the mac's Pages, edit and save. After iDisk syncs between the mac folder and iDisk on the cloud, I perform a "copy from iDisk" on the iPad's Pages.
The advantage of using iDisk or DropBox is that I don't have an intermediate file on the mac
(e.g. iPad --> iTunes (intermediate file) --> source file on mac)
    3) Other apps use a wifi sync, which is more automatic, but requires the iPad to be in local wifi distance to the mac. This method does not use intermediate files or an intermediate cloud location - much simpler.
My question is regarding the iTunes route, which I consider the worst of the three methods, since I have to deal with an extra copy from within iTunes on the mac to the actual source file on the mac - is there an app that can bypass iTunes and sync directly between both ends - the file on the iPad and the source file on the mac? I've used PadSync, but this is no better than iTunes. It would be great if I could put a link to the mac's source file into PadSync and have just the two files at both ends (mac and iPad). As it is, like iTunes, I have to have an intermediate file in PadSync. Maybe I've overlooked a feature of PadSync, but without any documentation for the application, I'm left guessing. Of course PadSync does iTunes-like syncing without having to do the whole iTunes process of dealing with music, video, podcasts, backups, etc. It is a bit more streamlined.
The ideal application on the mac (and PC) would be one in which you "register" an original file on the computer with an iPad app and the application syncs all registered files with the iPad. For an original source file on the iPad, you would register that file with a destination folder on the computer and then sync. Simple. (Somebody please tell me such an application for the mac exists!)

Having played around more with PadSync, I find that I can drag files into PadSync (which then sync to the iPad), but when a revised version is synced back to PadSync, I can double click the icon to open the file in the mac's native application, but I can't drag the file out to a destination folder or use any other means of getting it out of PadSync.
    Am I missing something?
---- ah, I found the way. I was looking at the files in PadSync using icon view. When I switched to list view, I can then drag files out of PadSync. Funny, I can't drag files out using icon view.
