System hangs anytime there is a restart either forced by update or selected from "start" button

Model: p7-1227cWindows: Windows 7 Home Premium  Service Pack 1 (64-bit)Processor: AMD A10-5700 APU with Radeon HD Graphics 3.40 GHzRAM: 12 GBBIOS: JAS_704.rom v 7.04 (AMI 7.04, 3/16/2012)SMBIOS Version: 2.7 In recently applying a Windows update, my system loaded the update and required a restart. The system shut down showing the log off screen and stating not to turn my system off as it was applying the update. After appearing to fully complete the update during the log off process, the machine went to restart, however the monitor went blank and the power button on the monitor started blinking as if there was no signal to the monitor. Assuming that perhaps it was a monitor issue, I tested the monitor on several other PCs and also connected a different monitor to my HP Pavilion with no change - monitors all worked properly and the system would still hang on a blank screen anytime there was a restart. I also tried removing all USB devices (mouse, printer, keyboard) during a restart and the system still would hang. Next troubleshooting piece was to try and remove the updates and restore to a date prior to the issue - this also did not work or resolve my issue. I removed a number of software programs assuming that perhaps there was a conflict, including the removal of my anit-virus software and the system still would hang. I ran a scan and chkdsk with no reported errors. I also used the built-in tool from HP to check the HDD and all results show everything was ok. I looked in my event log to see if there was any information that might help me troubleshoot, but most of the logs seem to be generic information as it pertains to start up and shut down and the "hangs" on the various restarts. (See below) With still no solution, I finally did a factory reset to hopefully restore everything and eliminate the problem and that did not resolve it either. I tried it twice (once from the partition and once from recovery discs). After restoring my system to the factory reset, I went to HP and updated all my drivers to see if that eliminated the problem - still hangs on any restart. I installed all the Windows updates and still no change - would hang after each system restart. At this point, I don't know what else to try. I have looked to see if there is a BIOS update, but for this particular system, it doesn't appear HP has one - not even the original one is listed on the support driver/software download page.  I have been able to enter what appears to be a hybrid BIOS/HP Setup screen and select reset all settings, but that did not resolve the issue. In a nutshell, the system will start Windows completely fine from a cold boot. It will start if the machine is shut down through the log off process and is off for approximately 2 minutes. It will hang up if you use the restart option while in Windows from the start menu or if the system does a restart due to an update.  The only way to get out of the blank screen and "hung" system is to hold the power button until it powers down (defnitely not the ideal way to power down). I thought perhaps there was an issue with the temperature of the PC, but even on a cold boot after sitting all night, if you have the system instantly do a restart (less than a minute of the PC being on), the machine will hang up on a blank screen. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated - hopefully I have provided enough detail here to resolve the issue. The PC is not under factory warranty, but I do have the option to leverage the AMEX extended warranty, however that requires an estimate through a HP approved repair center which isn't very convenient.

Hi, Disconnect all devices other than the keyboard, mouse and monitor.  I don't think that hardware is causing the shutdown issue but you can never be sure that it's not hardware.  The HP hardware diagnostics might give you some confidence that hardware is not the issue. Run a fully virus and malware scan to make sure that the system is clean.  Run these Norton tools  or another similar product to make sure that your PC is clean. Another suggestion is to revert to a known good Windows restore point before the issued started. This might eliminate a bad Windows update. Typically a hang on shutdown is a result of a task/service not responding to a terminate request from Windows.  Since the same hang occurs under SAFE MODE, I suggest that you review the tasks and services running when in SAFE MODE and see if you can determine what possibly is causing the issue.  You might at this point consider doing a full HP recovery using the HP external recovery media.

  • Since lastest FF update along with Adobe Flash update browser is problematic, was there a problem with either of these updates??

Since updating FF and the Adobe plug in last week I've found that loading pages or clicking on links is totally frustrating. The pages either dont load or need refreshing 3 or 4 times before they finally do load or I get nothing but a blank page.
Or i get - track.php (ONG Image, 1x1 pixels) on the tab and the page just keeps loading and loading and loading...
With the links I either get no response at all no matter what I do and how many times I click on it, or I get multiple responses like I've power clicked the links when I've only clicked once!
This is happening in Facebook, Messenger (which I still operate email through IE with), RSVP, Arena, y Tagi and a few other random pages I've tried.

  • MacPro Hangs on Restart of the Security update 2008-007!

After installing Security update 2008-007 and performing the required restart my MacPro 2x 2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (OSX 1.5.5) freezes on the apple grey logo with the spinning gear.
I`ve tried the Safeboot mode (shift key) but the screen remains the same (apple grey logo with the spinning gear).
I`ve tried the Single User mode (command+s) and done "/sbin/fsck -fy" and reports nothing different.
I`ve tried the verbose mode and there`s no apparent error message but the last line is:
Extension "com.apple.driver.iTunesPhoneDriver" has no explicit kernel dependency; using version 6.0.
And iTunes got updated as well (in the same session as Security update 2008-007) to 8.0.1
I`ve tried the Target mode (T) and used the "Repair Disk Permissions". There`s no error either.
I`ve tried booting from the leopard disk 1 and doing a Hardware test. All ok.
I`ve tried booting from the leopard disk 1 and using disk utility to "repair disk". It returns: disk appears to be OK in green.
The last thing I could do, unfortunately was Archive and Install Leopard with all configurations and definitions remaining.
That works and the system boots ok. Apparently the system is ok, but my two services (Qmaster and MatrixStore) doesn`t work anymore. I`ll probably go wi the fresh reinstall.
    BUT... for my surprise...
I have 4 mac pro 8 cores. This was the first one that I`ve installed the upgrade and restarted. I thought that was a problem with THIS particular Mac, but to my surprise, when I`ve done system update on the second MacPro the exactly same thing happens.
I have other 2 macs to upgrade but I`m afraid to have to reinstall all 4 macs! That`s a lot of work!
    Can anyone knows how to:
1- find what it`s happening to my macs after this upgrade (and it`s not for everyone as would be lot`s of topics about this right now).
    and
2- how to recover/uninstall the last upgrade in single user mode or with the leopard dvd on bash terminal.
    Very best Regards!

My method: +never apply updates until you backup and clone the system.+
Run Disk Warrior (Apple DU First Aid leaves some problems behind)
Never repair permissions from the DVD now with Leopard, you must run Repair Permissions either while booted or from a system running the same version, older versions of Disk Utility can cause trouble.
Test on the new clone. Security and combo updates can be applied to non-boot system. So you can boot from your emergency drive and apply it to your working drive. Perform a repair permissions, before you boot off the drive (another reason for applying updates from a 2nd drive).
Security Updates can plague and cause problems. There are always some that are fine, and some that run into "gotcha" or two. MacFixit usually has reports, tips, troubleshooting as soon as or within a day or two of any updates. And it seems like all your systems with similar configuration? looks like it wasn't tested.

After all these years and updates, I trust them less now than I use to, and it seems like there is always some risk (more risk than I've had with my other OS). OS X needs Acronis along with restore points, a way to apply and undo updates more easily.

Appreciate responding as soon as possible.

No, it's definitely not normal. Your User's Guide recommends a series of troubleshooting steps to go through when your iPad is misbehaving: As you're already in effect doing the first of the main steps, a Restart of your iPad, and that's not curing it, move on to the next .. a Reset.
To do this, press and hold both the Home and the Sleep/Wake buttons for about 10-12 seconds, until the display blanks and the red Power Off slider appears. Continue holding the buttons until the slider disappears, replaced by the black screen and white Apple logo.
This shows your iPad is starting to reboot. Release the buttons and allow the process to continue until the Lock screen appears again, then slide the slider to complete the process.

Follow Troubleshooting security software. Often, uninstalling third-party security software will resolve these errors.
There may be third-party software that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting a TcpWindowSize entry into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause these errors. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet size modification for assistance or follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
Verify that access to ports 80 and 443 are allowed on your network.
Verify that communication to albert.apple.com or photos.apple.com is not blocked by a firewall, or other Internet security setting.
Discard the .ipsw file, open iTunes and attempt to download the update again. See the steps underAdvanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations.

  • Memory problems, system hangs or does not enter 'sleep' mode

Since my MacBook automatically upgraded itself (Software Update) to 10.5.7 about a month ago I've had nothing but problems with it.
I keep getting 'low memory' warnings, or the 'please wait' twirling symbol displays for ages whilst something happens in the background, or the system occasionally hangs for no apparent reason. Sometimes it reboots without warning.
But the most irritating aspect of the problems I'm experiencing is that when I put it into Sleep mode and subsequently want to wake it up, I notice that the cooling fan is in overdrive (so clearly not asleep at all) and then upon opening the cover I get a blank screen (nothing 'wakes up'). Or so it appears. But actually upon closer inspection I can see my last used screen display in very faint outline somewhere in the darkness of the screen. The only way out of this scenario is to hold the on/off button until the machine shuts down, wait a few moments and then boot from scratch.
From reading other comments in this forum there seem to be some real problems with 10.5.7, so I suspect I'm not alone in experiencing the problems I've described above.
I'd be interested to know whether people think I should take my MacBook to my local Apple Store to get them to have a look at a fix of some kind, or perhaps there is something I could be doing myself?

For the record, no computer can just update it's system software on it's own. When Apple has updates available you must type in your admin password at the prompt in order to "Accept" the terms. The software cannot be installed without your knowledge.
Next... anytime you do software updates of any kind, run Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities) and repair disk permissions. Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
Try booting from your install disk and verify whether or not the hard disk has errors.
Insert the installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
    Check available disk space.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see
Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.

  • Lion 10.7.1 system hangs after reboot

Strange, I have just updated to 10.7.1 (via SW update) on my Macbook Pro and now the system does not boot. It restarted and now hangs since minutes with the spinning wheel on a grey screen. Anyone experienced this, too? Any solutions?

Regarding the occasional system hang on reboot people are experiencing. I have two troubleshooting suggestions to help you get to the login screen, but aren't solutions to the problem of whatever is causing the system hang. 1) I find my hangs are usually solved by removing my USB devices from the 2 USB ports (via USB hubs) and rebooting. 2) Furthermore, if I boot into verbose mode (holding command+v right before the chime) (sometimes after removing the USB devices, sometimes not), that usually helps the boot process along, either due to just chance (I don't know why booting into verbose mode would help it surmount the initial hang, but it seems to work sometimes) or some other reason.
    Good luck.
Yeah that better be one big fat good luck there, because that advice is not going to help anyone that is having this problem. Not one little bit. Some kind of magic that Verbose Mode casts will fix it? Uh, no. That would be a figment of your over-eager imagination, Verbose Mode doesn't change anythig. Oh and by the way, in order to get to this stage in the probelm, you would have had to use verbose mode to get the error message.  I can only assume that you sir are the real troll here, because our friend above asked a question that is worth merit and consideration, given the compatibility disaster that Apple has on their hands. To call it a disaster is not in the least bit an exaggeration.
We're going to have to ignore This is not an "occassional system hang", this is a serious problem affecting my MacBook Pro 17" and my iMac 27"., and it occured on both of them for me after installing Lion Server.

  • IMac G5 system hang - 2 bad 1GB memory modules?

I am experiencing intermittent system hangs, requiring power off / on to recover. Applications run fine for hours, then everything freezes; a few seconds later the fans spool up full bore. There seems to be no logic to the failure. It happens on many different applications, including Disk Utility. No new software has been added recently (other than Apple software updates). This has been occuring for several weeks.
I repair permissions & run disk verify. When disk utility runs completely without hanging (on verify), everything is ok.
Applecare had me trash the ~/Library/Caches & system caches. No joy. They recommended archive & install beginning with Panther. Reinstall went ok until downloading updates for 10.4.8, then hang (might this suggest a hardware prob?).
Rebooted in target firewire mode the cloned drive, then zero'ed the G5 HDD and restored from clone (SuperDuper!). Everything appeared ok for several days, then the same system hang reappeared. I should mention that in the course of sudying this one, I discovered Virex 7.5 was sucking the processing life from the G5; used the uninstaller to get rid of it & the iMac is quiet again!
I have run the Applecare version of Techtools and the Hardware Test Disk, everything passes.
I could do a clean install of Tiger, then use migration assistant to move data from the clone...if I felt it had a chance to solve it. On the other hand, maybe its a flaky hardware gremlin and I'm wasting my time doing reinstalls, and I should hustle it over to the local Apple store.
Update - took iMac for service at Apple store where it failed under stress test with my 2 GB of memory but ran for an extended period with Apple memory. In an attempt to isolate which of the two 1 GB modules was bad, removed one module. Identical failure after 24 hrs. Howver, swapping out that failing module with the second module, identical hand. That suggests either both 1 GB modules are bad (unikely), or some other hardware issue is the problem.
Problem seems to occur most often when starting playing iTunes, or running Disk Utility (repair permissions).
I suppose the next step is to buy 1 GB of memory from Apple and make it fail again. Any suggestions?

Thank you for your posts, I appreciate it.
Skip - I tried a spare keyboard & mouse. Still failed.
MGW - all software is up to date.
DaddyPaycheck - I downloaded memtestosx. It fails testing each 1GB memory module separately (in different sockets). I'm running in multiuser mode and when it fails the entire iMac freezes up (just like it always does), requiring power off / power on. Is this normal behavior when the memtestosx test fails?
I will plan to test in single user mode as the supplied doc states that if the onboard cache is failing it would pass singleuser (cache apparently disabled in singleuser mode) but fail multiuser. Maybe the onboard cache is bad?
    Thanks.

  • Random system hang-ups with Kernel 3.2.1-1 and catalyst 11.12

    Hello,
i have a very strange problem for the last month or so (i'm afraid i cannot say, when it exactly happened the first time or if it was after a upgrade): My system just randomly crashes. I haven't yet found out when it exactly crashes and how to reproduce it. But it happens almost every 2-3 days.
When the system hangs up, the last second of sound repeat over and over again. I can't move my mouse anymore as well as typing has no effect. I cannot change to another terminal. I cannot ssh into the laptop nor can i ping it.
In /var/log/messages.log, there is nothing usefull.. It just ends with the old kernel messages and then the new ones, when the system restarts. No error or so.
System runs on a Thinkpad X121e with AMD E-350 CPU. I have installed catalyst 11.12 with xorg-server 1.11.3. I will now compile catalyst 12.1 and see if it happens again.
Does anyone have a clue why the system crashes? Has it anything to do with catalyst?
    Best regards,
    pyro

isofluran wrote:Again, as I metioned before, the problem is likely not a hardware one but it is actually related to the kernel update (2.6.19)  or to an update which was performed at the same time.
Can anyone give a proposal for a step by step procedure to isolate the problem?
As I don't believe these crashes are related to anything but the kernel, one way of debugging your issues could be:
    * boot Knoppix
    * zcat /proc/config.gz | some non-volatile media
    * boot arch
    * get the current ABS
    * replace config in kernels/kernel26 with the one from Knoppix
    * makepkg
    * install and test
When that kernel runs, try to diff the two configs and see what's changed in arch. Also comparing both kernel versions if no significant changes exist might hint on the kernel being the problem.

  • System hangs when copying large quantity of files from external HD

    A little background:
I was having some problems with the original OS (10.4.1), including periodic freezes. I bought the Mac Box Set '09 and installed Snow Leopard (10.6.5), but ran into some problems and in the process had to reformat my internal hard drive. I backed up all of my photos (~16GB), Documents (~1.5GB) and Music (~50GB) on a WD external hard drive (My Passport 750GB).
*The problem*: After the 10.6.5 install, the computer works great (no random freezing when I click around in Finder), but I am having trouble copying files back to the internal HD from the external. I can copy up to about 1GB at a time without any problems, but any time I try to copy more than that, the system hangs (first the spinning disk cursor, then it totally freezes) and I have to do a hard reset. I have tried copying a number of different folders (pictures and music), and the same holds true: small folders with a few files copy without a hitch, but any time I try to copy a lot of files at once: freeze city. This problem occurs whether I am using Finder to copy the files or iPhoto/iTunes to import them.
I have verified both disks using the Disk Utility AND restructured/verified them using DiskWarrior. I also had no problem copying all of my files from My Passport to a second external HD using this MacBook, so I assume the Passport is fine. Is this a physical problem with my internal HD? If so, why can't DiskWarrior or DiskUtility catch it? I just noticed that there is an internal HD recall for this model of macbook, although I have never gotten the question mark on startup that would qualify me for a replacement HD from Apple. Maybe it's a problem with Snow Leopard... I would love to know if anyone has had this problem before or has some advice.
    Thanks,
    Sam

External USB/FW drives 'falling off' or drives spinning down (going to sleep) and I would assume since you have been running 10.4 that the Passport might be older model, perhaps not the latest firmware, maybe not compatible with Macs and with Snow Leopard.
Obviously you want FW800 but for some, USB worked where FW fails.
Hard Reset: do you have another hard drive to boot from to run Disk Warrior? is that updated to 4.2 or later? you never want to run DW from CD. Else, boot from OS X 10.6.5; or Single User and run FSCK. HFS+ doesn't take kindly to hard restarts even though a Safe Boot helps a little, that isn't as good as FSCK or one of the other options.
Disk Warrior Rebuild is more thorough, but if you hold OPTION while clicking on REBUILD it brings up more choices. And you want to scan the full hard drive.
Going back to Aug/Sept 2009, there were a lot of threads about external hard drive issues. Wish I could point to a good one.

  • Cannot install OS (system hangs) on K7N2GM-L

I've just put together a (mostly) new system.  The system posts OK, but when I try to install either Slackware or Win2k, the system hangs.  Slackware consistently hangs after recognizing the cd drive, with a message about a kernel bug, while Win2k hangs while loading hardware files, with a message about a registry error (As in a hardware registry, not the windows registry).  At one point, I was able to get slackware further in the install process, and even partitioned the hd, but I kept getting segfaults and then it would crash.
[Update]:  Slackware actually hangs in one of two places.  Sometimes it hangs right after initializing the Ramdisk, at which poing it gives an eror about being "Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virual address"  I get the CD error when FSB spectrum is set to .50, I get the ramdisk error when it is set to 1.00
    Things I've tried:
I've tested both ram sticks individually.
I've tried relaxing the memory timings, and changing the ram voltage.
    I've tried disabling external cache.
    Other info:
    System temperature: 30 degrees celsius
    CPU temp: 50 degrees celsius
I had to manually tweak the FSB to 166 (was being registered at 100) and set the FSB/DDR ratio to 1:1 (otherwise my PC2700 showed a 100mhz clock)
Voltages appear to be within tolerance.
Can anyone suggest what might be wrong?  My power supply is rather cheap, but again, voltages look OK in the bios, and would that create such consistent problems?  Is it my RAM?  Or do I just have a faulty motherboard or CPU?
I've been at this for hours and I'm going nuts.  Please help!

qui3ote it's so hard to say just exactly what your rig is going to take to run properly...some ppl spend hours trying different component configurations trying to make them work together only to find out that they have 1 or even 2 components in the "mix" failing at the same time thus leaving them to scratch their heads in disbelievement...I've been there myself...your best bet is to do as the "pro" builders do...
Homework, homework, homework...many of us now look around the net for others who have already built systems around a certain motherboard not being the first pioneers to venture into the unknown...saving ourselves countless hours because we've taken the time to talk to the experienced out there as to what will and will not work...
Some of us who do build a lot of systems for other folx out there take the time to buy different brands of memory, PSU's, CPU's, MB's, etc...and play with different configs in order to find "what works" and then post results in different forums in order to let others know what they've tried and not tried...this usually takes a bit of capital in order to buy what's known as "troubleshooting parts" and can get quite expensive...
To the occasional home builder: The days of buying and building with no problems is long past...with todays high speed systems, a lot of these home builders only remember the brand names that they used in the past thinking that they can go out and buy a really full featured high end MB, cheap generic or "Value" RAM memory, use the same case (usually 3 to 5 yrs old with a PSU in it that couldn't jump start someone's heart if they were dying, much less start up a power hungry high end gaming rig), as well as other peripherals...
Then they head on down to the MB mfg's website (if they even have one these days) and (thankfully not in your case) begin to trash and bash the company about how they have a crappy product, blah, blah, blah...
See where I'm going with this? In any case, as long winded as I've been here, you must now rise above the "occasional home builder" status and approach building with a new outlook as to "how to" and do that homework if you don't want to end up in this boat each and everytime...technology advances and it's up to us humans to advance our thought processes with it...
I wish you luck in your build here...my biggest advice I can give you atm is to go read the sticky posts at the top of the forum for some excellent tips on Memory, troubleshooting, etc, in order to gain some insight into how to do what you're doing...also, as Raven here points out, that PSU is way out of it's league in being able to supply the power needed for the build you're doing...take a step up into the world of high speed computing and lay down some cash for some higher end components that will leave you tearing out less of your hair and give you some peace of mind...
Apacer, OCZ, Corsair, Infineon, and, of course, Mushkin are all decent memory lines that have been known to work with these MB's...DO NOT buy cheap "Value" RAM memory for your board, it's likely to only give you more headaches...Mid to high end memory will cost you considerably more money but will save you countless hours of time trying to troubleshoot which to me is more valuable these days...a PSU with AT LEAST the amperage specs that Raven lists in his post, +3.3v-28, +5v-35A, +12V-18A, or even better is in most cases a requirement these days...and yes you're going to spend 60 to 100 dollars US or more to get one that gives you that spec...sales are a good thing to watch for all of this...
Sorry to go on for so long but I just wanted to give you some insight into the "new age" of computer building! Hope I've enlightened some things for you...if not sorry I rambled on so much *chuckles*
Good luck and let us know if you need any more help!

WE ARE RUNNING THE EXP COMMAND ON THE SERVER ITSELF.
THE SERVER OPERATING SYSTEM IS WINDOWS 2003 SERVER.
Kindly give us a solution at the earliest.

You should ask Oracle support for help. There's only one entry for this error stack (Bug 3361288 - Export of XMLSCHEMA may fail with ORA-24324 in UTF8), but it should have been fixed for your DB version and , as far as I can see, you don't have a Unicode database.
