System Preferences "Must Quit and Reopen" No "Open in 32-bit" Option to Uncheck

Everything worked fine when I had 10.7. But I still updated to 10.8 when it came out. I spent quite a while trying to figure out why I couldn't use many of the preferences in the system preferences. I kept getting the message: "To use the ____ preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen." Quitting and reopenning sends me on an infinite loop.
I've scowered the support communities and found no help. The communities kept saying I should go to the System Preferences file in Applications, go to Get Info, and uncheck a box that says "Open in 32-bit Mode." Unfortunately, I have never had that box. Today I updated to 10.8.4, hoping that this would finally get fixed. It was not.
Is there any solution I'm missing?

Just got same problem.
#1. There is no Box, under Label or anywher to uncheck or check.
#2. The device I want to use does not have an update driver. What I really need if for the Box to check or uncheck which should be there according to Apple Help.
#3. I tried this, resetting the whole computer's kernal extension by using a Terminal command (although I don't like doing that). It didn't work. sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture i386
So I reset it to: sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64
But emphasize, again, I don't like doing SUDO commands in Terminal.
So...Anything else to try?
Thanks for any info that might help.

  • To use the "Users & Groups" preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen.

When I try to access some of the system preferences in Mavericks I get an error pane that states "To use the “Users & Groups” preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen."
Has anybody had this problem and if so what is the fix?

Usually happens if you opened one that was 32-bit. Then, you need to revert back to 64-bit.

  • System preferences must quit and reopen 32-bit unchecked

    Hello,
Whenever i try to open Network, users&groups... i get this message "To use the “name of pane” preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen."
I've already checked that 32-bit mode is unchecked I've tried repairing disk permissions with no luck so far.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance. You can skip this step if you don't care about the data that hasn't been backed up.
Reinstall the OS.* Your data should be unaffected unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

This is a shot in the dark, but try this:
log-in to your iCloud account with your Apple ID
    change your password
ensure your billing information is up-to-date
attempt to re-enable your Keychain (again)

  • System preferences automatic 'quit' and re-open'.

I cannot get System preferences to quit and reopen to allow for 32-bit compatability mode to work.

Somehow the .plist for the auto backup had its' permissions changed. No idea how, since I haven't fooled with it or with any Time Machine third party apps.
For future reference, you probably didn't need to do a restore. A "full reset" of Time Machine probably would have done it. See #A4 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Either way, Repair Permissions noticed a problem and fixed it. My problem is resolved. Thanks so much!
    For bonus points:
When I did a restore, to my pleasure, I surprisingly found that it had included all my configs and even my wallpaper. I thought it only backed up data.
No, Time Machine backs-up your entire system: OSX, apps, configuration, users, preferences, etc. (unless you exclude things).
If I exclude the Library folders, will all these settings not be backed up
Correct. In most cases, it's a bad idea to exclude much of anything. See #11 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

I transfered my iWork '09 to my new Mac Air. Now my Keynote won't open. I get message, "An unexpected error has occurred, please quit and reopen Keynote." This doesn't work.

so Keynote still isnt working after installing, I thought you had it sorted from your last post.
If you have not done so remove any files relating to iWork and Keynote and reinstall iWork
    files that must go are:
    the iWork ’09 folder from the main HD > Applications;
the iWork ’09 folder in HD > Library > Application Support
the individual iWork application plist files found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library >
There are a number of free application removal tools  that will do this for you:

External hard drive connected to my airport extreme will no longer open, when navigating to it in Finder, the Finder window quits and reopens, cannot access hard drive, it is visible in airport utility, since the problem began I have updated firmware on Extreme as well as both of my Airport Expresses. Hard drive is USB connected to Extreme.

Reboot the USB drive.. assuming it is powered.. or unplug and replug a self-powered drive.. (you should not use self-powered drives on AE before the latest model.. always use a powered hub).
Does the drive now appear in finder..
If not reboot both drive and the AE.. it should now appear.
If it doesn't work with direct connection try a powered hub.. that can help.

No, as I have yet to be convinced on Lion.

  • System Preferences, Address book, and ical suddenly won't open

As I said My system Preferences, Address book, and ical suddenly won't open. This seemed to have happen all at once. The only unusual thing to happen lately is that my ipod was corrupted and I resored it last night. Now when I try to open these programs I get one or two bounces on the icon, then nothing. My other programs including itunes seem to work fine. There are no error messages at all.

/System/Library/Frameworks/Message.framework/Versions/B/Message (file is empty)OK, this is an important part of your basic system and will need to be restored.
First you should boot from your Install Disk and repair your disk: see Using Disk Utility and fsck to resolve startup issues or perform disk maintenance.
Then I think you would be wise to consider an Archive & Install. See Mac OS X : About the Archive and Install Feature. This should put back the missing file(s). You will also then need to re-apply the Mac OS X 10.3.9 Update (Combo), and anything else Software Update says is missing.
Post back and let us know how you get on!

  • System Preferences won't load, .prefpane packages open like folders...

Summary: When I click on system preferences in the apple menu nothing happens and no console log entries are generated. When I try and manually launch a .prefpane package from finder it just opens like a folder.
If I try and manually launch a .prefpane package it just automatically displays the content of the package, in finder, like a folder. In fact that is how I noticed this problem. An application I was using tried to launch the Growl prefs and the contents of the growl prefpane package just popped up in a folder. System prefs worked after install but died somewhere along the way. The only significant thing I did between them working and not working was install Parallels and set up a VM.
I am at a loss. This is a brand new install with nothing fancy going on. I did a disk repair and a permissions repair and both were green.
I can't find anything about it on the web. I am not sure if I am just not searching correctly or if it's something stupid that I am missing... Where is the "don't launch system preferences" setting? LOL

Have you tried opening System Preferences by double-clicking its icon in the Applications folder?
