System wide default configuration files?

I have six people using the computer, and I don't want to have to configure starting Wicd in the tray for each user or font configuration...
Is there a way to set up configuration files for new users like Ubuntu and all of the other "tweaked" distros do?

Doesn't matter where you copy the config files from, so long as they're valid and do what you want.
Whether configuring your user will give you ~/.config files that do what you want depends. For example, if there's an existing /etc/foo_config file, and you set up your ~/.foo_config file in a way that (whether you realize it or not) depends on the stuff in /etc/foo_config being the system default, and then you copy your ~/.foo_config file to /etc/foo_config (overwriting the old file), then no, it won't work. If you avoid mistakes like that, and end up with ~/.foo_config files that all on their own do what you want, then sure, it will work. (Just check their permissions after you copy them to /etc.)

How remove saved system-wide default for a column

yesterday I saved a system-wide default for a column with a custom column heading and data format.
now, when I drag this column in a new analysis, obiee shows no column heading.
I've tried to save my custom default again or reset to column-default but with no results: the column heading is still empty.
How can I fix this problem?

What OBI version are you using?
Enter some other custom name for the column (e.g. same as default one) and save it as system-wide. I guess, you have already tried, but...
1. Stop Presentation Services.
2. Go under web catalog in the file system and locate folder \root\system\metadata. This folder contains files storing subject area attributes, including system-wide settings. I the folder find 2 files named similar as the subject area which column you have modified (name will be in lowercase, spaces replaced with +). For example, for "SA System" subject area these files are named as "sa+system" and "sa+system.atr".
3. Backup these 2 files you have found (better whole presentation catalog).
4. Try one of the options:
Option 1: If you have another version of these files (in the backup or other environments) - try to replace them. There is a risk you will loose some other column settings (or inherit new).
Option 2: Modify the file without extension (it contains XML code inside): locate the string similar to your column name. Remove whole section ONLY for the column you have found between tags <sawsavedformat:columnSavedFormat and </sawsavedformat:columnSavedFormat>.
Below is sample code for column originally named as "Pager" under "User" folder in "SA System" subject area.

Option 3: Just remove these 2 files. Naturally, you will loose all the settings, not only one you like to get rid off.
5. Restart presentation services.

Copy system-wide defaults between instances

Using Catalog Manager, which object(s) do I need to copy-paste between instances in order to preserve system-wide defaults?
If it's in the manual, I missed it. :(

In catalog manager get to /system/metadata & copy the one with name of Subject area..
for ex: If you have formated a column under Subject Area A then the file would be stored as /system/metadata/A .......copy that file and use it.

Unable to save column as system wide default

Hi All,
I am in 11.1.1.1.6, I am trying to the save a column as system wide default in 11g but my changes are not getting saved or reflected?
This is what I did using the "weblogic" user name and password
1. Pulled a column EmpName in the criteria
2. Added an action link to that column, which points to another dashboard page Page1
3. Saved as system wide default by clicking on save as system wide default for "EmpName"
4. Restarted the presentation services.
Now when again logged in, and selected that column in my request, what I expect to see (when I run the request and go to results) is that navigtion applied on this column which will take me to the dashboard page Page1.
But this is not happening, What is that I am missing? Can anybody please let me know

Thanks Deva for your reply, I don't have access to Oracle support, I'll have to go back to my client saying that this is a bug,
Can you please confirm that this bug which you mentioned is related to not being able to save the column properties as system wide default in obiee 11.1.1.1.6.0 version?
Also what i just found online is that this bug was fixed in 11.1.1.1.6.2? Can you please confirm this?

window 2008 R2 server ---- after installing SQL 2008 R2 then applying sp2 / sp3 I noted a warning -
Note this server had SQL 2008 R2 uninstalled previously.

where the fix is "in your registry, go to:

or

if value is empty then add in:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\Binn\MsDtsSrvr.ini.xml"

here what is the scope of the system ?
Is it dashboards group or perticular dashboard with its all pages/tabs or all dashboards related to subject area where same column is part of it ?

Save as system wide default

Hi,
I did some changes to some column and set as system wide default for that column in dev.
1. for example there are 20 existing reports using this column. does this format applicable to existing reports?
2. How can I migrate this system wide default change to set of column from dev to test?

Set system wide default mailto url

I'm trying to configure system wide settings in linux so any new user will apply for this settings.
I want register my zimbra server with mailto links.
I've found some information here:

I also tried to play with mimeTypes.rdf, but it seems that there's no system wide mimetypes file. is just created when users changes something.

System Preferences defaulting to File Sharing

Hi there !
Everytime I open up System Preferences it is opening to the file sharing preferences.
I would like it open to the window of icons for preferences (the main one).
How do I go about changing this?
I have already closed out system preferences and rebooted. Neither have worked.

Well I can't say this is a correct answer or helpful answer because I think this new MacBook Pro is a lemon.
I own a macbook so I know my way around and how to do this. This laptop is not right.
Even after deleting the com.apple.systempreferences.plist file. it still did that.   But it's also doing other odd things.
Everytime I shut down or reboot (and yes, I uncheck repopen windows), it will open mail and system preferences (open to file sharing) everytime.   I make sure everything is closed (no app indicator light is on), and no matter what, it still opens to them.
Also it's not holding some tracking preferences.   I'm going to take it back today and exchange it.

System wide default character set

I moved to a new company few days ago where we use Tiger workstations and servers.
I've been trying to figure a way to set UTF8 as the default character set for a whole system, not just a user preference.
I suppose there is a way to do that, but I'm afraid I won't have more time to find it.

If you could explain exactly why you think you need to do that, someone might be able to help.
Generally speaking Unicode UTF-8 is what OS X uses by default for a lot of things. The exception would be the file system, which uses UTF-16 NFD. There is no way to change that.

Default Configuration files

If you sequence an app-v 5.0 package it output's an .appv and _DeploymentConfig.xml and _UserConfig.xml (and .msi wrapper).
By default the .appv contains the same information as in the _DeploymentConfig.xml and _UserConfig.xml (?)
Therefore one can assume that when using Add-AppvClientPackage of Publish-AppvClientpackage you do not have to specify -DynamicDeploymentConfiguration or -DynamicUserConfigurationPath when those .xml files are not changed?

Correct, the XML files provide a more convenient method for package customization by removing the need to re-sequence packages using the desired settings, and provides a way to keep package content and custom settings independent.
If you want to adjust the defaults you can edit the files, then the parameter -DynamicDeploymentConfiguration is necessary or you have to import the XML file in the App-v Management Console.

Setting Default Configuration in 1.4.2

Previous versions of Java Web Start had a default configuration file javaws.cfg which contained the default preferences. When JWS was installed on PCs in our intranet, we could switch the cfg file to one which, amongst other things, set the proxy correctly and disabled shortcut creation. Then when any other user logged on to the PC, they would get a copy of this cfg file.
But in JWS 1.4.2 there no longer seems to be a default cfg file. When a user logs on they get defaults which are incorrect for our environment. This is a problem when several different users share the same PC. Whenever a new user logs on to the PC and uses Java Web Start, we must set up the preferences manually.
Our users are in a call center and are not capable of setting preferences themselves. In fact in the past we have removed the JWS icon from the desktop because we don't want them to even know it exists. All they know how to do is click a link (to a jnlp document) on a web page.
Is there some way to set the default preferences at install time that I've missed?

Educated guesswork mostly; read over the JavaOne "whats new with web start" to get a feel for the changes yourself (http://servlet.java.sun.com/javaone/sf2003/conf/sessions/display-1486.en.jsp). Several things here will lead to internal changes. While it's location isn't likely to change (they're in the right place now - in the user profile dir) the contents, structure and config files certainly will.
Biggest single change is the unification of Java Plugin and Web Start, according to the slides this includes the merging of the applet & web start caches and configuration dialogs (it's not a big leap to assume this means merging their config files also). The new 1.5 Jar Hyper Compression format will also doubtless come into play changing the very format of the Jars getting cached. The other big change is to the security system - both opening up the sandbox model and a new central administration system will mean that the preferences on a users machine may be overridden at any time by the administrator. The cache structure itself undergos a big change with the new 'System Cache' - given that users cannot read from another users profile, this system cache will need to be stored in some shared directory elsewhere. A move that will split normal operation into a pair of active caches further obfuscates assumptions about the internal structure somewhat. This only scratches the surface here - needless to say, big changes ahead.
For the 'system cache' It'll be interesting to see how the web start team get around the default privileges assigned to a domain user under XP typically doesn't allow writing to a directory outside of their user profile folder (default privs are restricted). Similarly I'd like to see how well the new JNLP file associations work out in a similar scenario. Adding a file association requires writing to the registry; this again is typically a prohibited operation requiring local administrator rights to the machine. I hope the web start team have come up with answers to these problems and not just take the Java update line of only working while the user is logged on as a local administrator (http://www.javadesktop.org/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=184&tstart=0). This severely limits your user base to non-networked single user machines (home users), the network admins machine and windows 98 & me boxes which don't share the security model.
Finally it's not a good idea to make any assumptions about the internal layout and contents of any of Sun's undocumented services, it's always going to be prone to change without warning. Developers make changes to these at their own peril and only have themselves to blame when their code suddenly stops working.

How to enforce a different configuration file while invoking SAPShcut.exe

I'm using sapshcut.exe to logon to SAP. Following is syntax of command that Iu2019m using for that prupose:
sapshcut.exe /sysname=IDES /client=800 /user=xxxx /pwd=yyyy
By default, the configuration file (saplogon.ini) that is being used during this process by sapshcut.exe is located in user directory (SAP GUI 7.2). However, Iu2019d like to use a different configuration file that is located at other location (e.g., h:/test/saplogon.ini). SAP has mentioned to use additional parameter "INI_FILE" for that purposes so Iu2019m using following command:
sapshcut.exe /sysname=IDES /client=800 /user=xxxx /pwd=yyyy /INI_FILE=h:/test/saplogon.ini
No matter what value I defined for the u2018INI_FILEu2019 parameter, SAP ignores it and always uses default configuration file located in the user directory and if given SAP system does not exist in that configuration file then I report an error. Interestingly, I found that if use 'saplogon.exe' instead of 'sapshcut.exe' and provide same parameter value for 'INI_FILE' parameter then SAP overwrite the default configuration file and uses saplogon.ini defined there. But i cannot use saplogon.exe as I must have to use sapchcut.exe to directly log into SAP system for automation testing.
I've also found out that the only way sapshcut.exe can overwrite the default ini file is through the use of environment variable "SAPLOGON_INI_FILE". But rather than using environment variable I'd like to define configuration file during the command line.
Any help would be really appreciated.

We stumbled upon the same problem. Thank you for mentioning that using the environment variable works.
This leads to the following single command line as a workaround.
First set the needed saplogon.ini and then execute in a nested command shell the call to sapshcut.exe
cmd /c set SAPLOGON_INI_FILE=C:\config\saplogon.ini & cmd /c "%ProgramFiles%\SAP\FrontEnd\SAPgui\sapshcut.exe" -user= -pw= -language=E -system=XXX -client=100
This works, but only if there is not already an instance of saplogon.exe running with a different saplogon.ini.

System-Wide Formatting not applied to Dashboard Column Prompt in 11g

In OBIEE 11g, I have a dashboard column prompt with a date column. I use this column in the analysis and have made the column properties (formatting) a system-wide default for that column.
When I use the column in a dashboard column prompt, it does not show this formatting.
Any ideas why it might not work?

So from what I understand about your question, the system wide default data format you have set for the date column is not following the same format when you use it as a dashboard column prompt. The system wide format only applies for analysis purposes and not for prompts in 11g.
