T60 Microphone input: Stereo? Mono? Phantom power?

Hello,
Does anyone understand the T60 mic input. It seems to me that it a mono input, but if you plug a stereo cable in it, the middle ring on the cable actually gives a 5 volt reading if you put a volt meter across the middle ring and ground. Is this possibly some sort of phantom power and wouldn't this be shorted out if you plugged a mono plug into it? I would think that shorting a power source would be a bad thing.
Thanks for anyone's help,
John

It's a mono input, and it is worthless in my opinion.  The 5 folts is probably spurious, and shouldn't be there.  If you have tried to record direct from this input, you will probably hear a load of noise in the recording.
At least, that's what I get on mine. Really made me angry, as I had to buy a Soundblaster add-on card to get decent recording.
Phantom power is generally a lot higher than 5 volts, but a lot of things in computers run on 5 volts.

If i record something with my mic, i cant hear the audiofile, the mic works in skype and so on without problems and i can see, that my audiofile was recorded - but if i start to "play" the file, i cant hear anything, whats wrong in my settings?
Edit: ok i see, if i connect my mic, i cant hear anything, even in youtube or something like that. if i disconnect my mic after that, i cant hear sound in youtube too. what should i do to fix this?

already asked and discussed in the last 3 days.

  • Cant record in stereo , mono input (aux in) intel ALC270 [Solved]

Hi there, i've been reading the forum but i cannot get the right answer to this issue.
I am trying to capture audio with the microphone input connector.
I tried it using audacity (as i always did with other distros but now is not working) and with this command arecord -vv -fdat foo.wav
The thing is, i always end up with a mono audio file. I see in alsamixer the input/capture connector is stereo, i can see the Left and Right volume levels
but modifing those make no difference.
Something seems to tell the whole system to translate the stereo microphone into a mono microphone or something like that... i am no quiet sure, cause in audacity the recording track shows a stereo track although both channels have the same audio track, the right channel one...
i was using this same computer not long ago with fedora, and for like 2 years with slackware and always worked fine... i've been using archlinux for 4 months now and i came across with this while trying to rip some new cassettes i got.
Thanks in advance for your help pals.
    Cheers!

It's a dean markley acoustic pick up with a mono 1/4" jack. It's plugged into a focusrite interface. GarageBand only records it in stereo and only plays it back in mono.

you appear to already know the answer, however...
GB is not recording it in stereo, nor could it

  • Using Both A Microphone and Stereo Mix Input In Audition

    Hello,
I'm attempting to record a radio show..
Running Vista.... And using Adobe Audition 3. I am trying to use a stereo mix input (which I know is visible and can use) along with a microphone input (I have a sm57 mic, which is also activated and working).
However, it only gives me the ability to use one at a time when I go to multi track.
    Any ideas?
    ~Thanks

That's all Microsoft's 'mixer' does for anybody; you can only select a single input to record from. The best solution in your case is to use a small, cheap external mixer instead. This has the added advantage of giving you some immediate physical control of what you are doing as well.

  • Logic Will Randomly Lose Phantom Power

I have an Apogee One running into Logic Studio 9. On the Apogee One, I am running and XLR cable to an Apex Microphone, and a 1/4" cable to a guitar (At Different times). When recording either the Guitar, but most commonly with the Phantom Power on the 48V Input, the Microphone will drop out temporarily and not pick up any sound, then slowly it will fade back in. This happens every couple of minutes during a recording. We have already replaced the Apogee One, but the issue still seems to occur.
    Any Suggestions?

    Hi
This sounds like an issue with the audio interface, not Logic. Does the interface work ok on another computer? If it can, run it with a separate power supply, rather than bus-powering from the Mac.

  • Optimizing microphone input level into GB with a mixer

I am trying to optimize the mixer settings for recording from a professional quality studio condenser microphone (requiring phantom power) in GB. I have the options of 1) changing the preamp gain on the microphone input, 20 changing the level of the microphone channel in the main mix, and 30 changing the main mix output level. These output from the mix goes through an iMic into a USB port on my mac.
Can someone describe how to set the mixer output to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio without causing distortion in GB? When I have followed the general recommendations for setting the gain, level, and main mix output for live performances, the output from the mixer causes GB to distort, even though there is no clipping occurring before it leaves the mixer. I can turn down any of these settings and get a decent recording in GB, but I'd like to know how to optimize the settings and not just settle for something that just works.

Consider an all-digital chain of signals (for sake of the argument, in analog terms it's similar), recording at 16 bit. If at the first stage of your recording you use only 12 of the 16 bits, you're giving up half of your resolution which is important for the dynamic range that your recording has. And this information is lost forever, even if you push the signal at the next stage - you lower the sound quality.
That's why I said that taking advantage of the full bit resolution at every step of your signal chain is crucial.

  • Microphone Input Not Showing on Garageband 10.0.1 (Macbook Pro Late 2013)

I am using GB 10.0.1, trying to connect a microphone to my Macbook Pro (Late 2013) and record a few things. But the input doesn't show up at all... The only thing that shows up is "Built In Microphone". What should I do?

an SM58 is a dynamic mic, not a condenser, it does not use Phantom power, however there still are reasons why you can not plug an SM58 directly into a Mac, and do indeed need an interface:

  • Phonic Firefly 302 -  No Microphone input

New firewire audio interface works for MIDI and analog input but not for microphone. Have tried with both iMac Core Duo and Powerbook G4 both w/ OS 10.4.8.
The interface seemed like a good deal - $120. Just started shipping. Manufacturers page:
    http://www.phonic.com/en/product/detail.php?groupname=&languageid=1&group=en&productno=FW32P
The curious thing is that the input level monitor in the Sound System Prefs panel responds appropriately when tapping the mic but no sound. Also lights on interface box respond appropriately, depend on mic switch, phantom power, gain controls etc.
Device appears in audio midi setup.app control panel but audio input controls in lower left are inactive (volume sliders, thru checkbox et al greyed out.).
Midi keyboard records just fine with garageband 3. Ipod input through analog-in jacks plays fine through interface with rogue amoebas Linein.app. I cannot get any sound at all with microphone (Nady SP1).
Am waiting for a response from Phonic. Anything else to try?
Powerbook G4 and iMac Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

seems like if the analog input off of your iPod works, the Mic input should do the same.
what software are you using to record the mic ?
Have you actually tried to record, or are you waiting to "hear" something first?
It's possible that when you select Mic, it signals the Mac to Mute the audio so that it doesn't feedback.
Try recording your iPod, and whil still in record, switch your interface to Mic, plug it in, and see what happens.

  • I need help interface/phantom power

i'm going to be purchasing the nt2-a studio condenser microphone but i'm under the impression i will be needing to buy an interface, could which interface i get affect audio quality etc, i will only ever be using one microphone at a time.
Which interface should i get and what should i know as i've only worked with usb microphones before?
Do i need to buy a phantom power also?
Do i need to spend 100 odd on an interface or will this work http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/XLR-to-USB-Interface-convertor-with-48v-Preamp-phantom-power-/16 1105081721?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Preamps&hash=item25829c7579
    What is my cheapest option?

I must confess that I'm slightly at a loss to understand why you want to purchase one of the quietest condensor mics around and then feed it into a piece of junk like that ebay item. The mic will considerably out-perform it. Yes, you need phantom power for this mic, but if you want to use it to anything like its capability, then you'll need rather more than the cheapest usb interface for it.
You'd be better served by the (cheaper) Behringer Xenyx 302 USB Mixer and interface, or for not much more, the ART USBMix 3 Channel Mixer w/ USB Audio & Phantom Power. Even though I'm personally not a huge fan of Behringer, either of these will do a better job, because the preamps in them aren't anywhere near as compromised. At this price level though, (only 16-bit A-D) you still won't be able to get the full benefit from it. To do that, you're going to need a more expensive system with a better converter.

  • Phantom Power On, Gain Still Too Low

I am running STP on a MAC Mini with M-Audio Firewire Solo and I can't seem to realize any difference between a dynamic and condenser mic input. I turn Phantom Power on on the Firewire Solo but I still have to crank up the gain. The condenser mic is brand new too. What's up?

Probably a mispcerception. Why do you think phantom power would help?
If you have a battery in the mic, phantom doesn't apply.
If you don't need a battery in the mic, phantom doesn't apply.
If your mic requires power and none is applied, the preamp does nothing, there is no signal available at all from the mic.

  • Phantom power for a USB mic

I'm interested in a USB mic made by SE Electronics USB mic (2200A). It has zero latency because it has a built in headphone jack. The only problem is that it requires 48V phantom power. The only phantom power units I've seen online don't have USB or even 1/4" inputs. (they're all three pin mic inputs) How do I get phantom power for a USB mic?

it doesn't need an external poser supply when used as a USB mic.
I'm assuming you mean "power" supply? And that the mic in question only needs phantom power
if used with a 1/4" adapter going into an interface or preamp, but if directly plugged into the Mac USB port, it needs no other power supply? The salespeople at the store know nothing!

  • Running Mic through Phantom Power

Hello all! Im having a bit of trouble here. Running a MK-319 Condenser Mic through a Phantom Power adapter, then through a Lexicon Alpha (audio interface) to my USB. I can't get a signal with GarageBand08. Any help would be much appreciated. Hope Im not being to vague.....

o.k., I'll do my best to answer that. Done=I've Created a drum track(loops). Set=? Changed=I've changed my input/output settings on both my Hard Drive & GarageBand Preferences to Lexicon Alpha. Created=I made a track with my giutar through the audio interface.... Im sorry, Im sure that didn't help at all. Im kind of new to all of this...

  • SB Audigy 2 ZS Plat Pro and MXL 990 Phantom power microph

I recently acquired the microphone which is "phantom power".
I am presuming that it is not compatible with the sound card, would that be true?
if any walkaround could be suggested so that i can use a better quality mic with the sound card it would be much appreciated.
phantom power 48v +/- 4 (if that means anything).
I will be getting a mixer soon as well to aid a variety of projects but all my hardware is sourced at relati've low cost so compatibility issues cannot be tested in advance. again if there are any issues with connecting to the hub it would be good to know.
    cheers
