Table of contents - self listing

Hello,
I've already found a solution on this forum for my question but I'm hoping an expert can explain to my why something doesn't work as I expect it.
Problem:
When you make a table of contents (ToC), the entry for the ToC....page # doesn't appear in the ToC itself.
Solution
Put a non-printing frame with a Paragraph style that is include in your "Include Paragraph Styles:" in the ToC dialogue box.
Question:
Lets just say I've got Paragraph Style X and Paragraph Style Y in the "Included Paragraph Styles".  At the top where you can choose the Paragraph style for Table of contents (next to the Title: box) I've tried putting in Style X but it still doesn't show up.  I've tried having another ToC (a Table of Figures) using Paragraph Style X and it also doesn't show up under the first ToC.  Other items with Style X shows up, but Table of Contents and Table of Figures don't show up as a ToC entry
Do ToC never list themselves? Or Is there something else going on.
Thanks

I never noticed that before, but my guess is that TOC stories are "special" (they do have some sort of internal marking in the database that says they are a TOC -- you can't copy them to a new doc and have them update, for example) and are not included to prevents some sort of regression loop on update.

  • How to include in table of contents the list of figures and list of tables?

How to include in table of content the "Table of contents", "List of figures" and "List of tables"? All are generated with function Table of contents, but they will not appear in generated table of contents even if they have proper style of headings - Heading 1, as other chapter.
I get this in generated Table of contentes of my dissertaion thesis:
    Table of contents
    Preface
    Table of contents <- missing
    List of tables <- missing
    List of figures <- missing
    Introduction
    Main
    Conclusion
Is it ok, that generated lists are not included in table of contents?

    You've just confused me.
My understanding of how this is set up is that either:
This is a book, and there is a master TOC that includes all book documents and a document-specific TOC in each component file, or
This is a single file and there is one master TOC that includes all sections and a section-specific TOC that includes only the individual section.
In the first case, I think you would want two TOC styles set up, one that includes the chapter heads (if I understood how you said this worked) for the for the master, and you would include all docs in the book when you generate it, and a second style for the individual chapters, with the subheadings you want to include.
In the second case, it would be similar, but instead of only one style to cover the section TOCS, I think you would need to create a unique set of pargraph styles for the headings in each section (they can all be the same format, based one section, just with unique names), and then make a TOC style for each section that includes only the styles from that section.
OK,  wait a sec. I just reread what you said: "Another thing: when the numbers are "linked" and updating well, they  display indide a little box. Not a text box, but a kind of little frame  around the numbers. That frame makes it imposible to delete just one  number: when the TOC says that Section 6.1 is in page 135, for example,  you cannot delete just the 5, it deletes, not just the 3 numbers, but  also the doted tab."
I think these are NOT normal TOCs created by using Layout > TOC (but you could replace them with ones that are, if you set up your styles properly and the text you want to include is appearing on the pages). Those little boxes you mention sound like cross-references, which should update automatically without any intervention at all. Unfortunately, cross-refs can be flakey, especially if they point to another document. I'd open the cross-refs panel and see if you need to recreate a bunch of links.

  • Table of contents from lists or character styles

I have a legal document and I want to create a table of contents that includes, not just Headings (Article I, II, III, etc.) but also the sub headings (eg: Artilcle IV.3) which were created as numbered lists.  If I give the list item a paragraph style it will put the whole text into the TOC.  If I put a carrige return after a List heading it makes the body text as a new number in the list.  Is there some wat to get either lists or character styles into the TOC? Can you have an in-line paragraph style? Here's what the document looks like:
    Article VII Heading
    List Heading.  body text...
    a)   Sublist heading body text
    b)   Sublist heading body text
    List Heading.  body text...
Is there any way to do this so that the TOC reads something like this:
    Article I   Heading              ....... page 2
              2. List Heading          ....... page 2
                a) Sublist Heading   ....... page 2
                b) Sublist Heading   ....... page 2
              3. List Heading          ....... page 3
    Article II                              ....... page 3
    etc. ??
I could do this manually, but this is document is being edited now and again and I don't want to have to change the TOC everytime we make a small chage to the document.
    Thanks,
    Brendan

The numbering and lettering are automatically generated by the List I selected.
It's been a few months since I did this, so I'm trying to remember exactly how the process went.
I've edited Bylaws and Constitutions like this several times for several non-profit organizations over the years, first on MS-DOS with floppy-discs using WordPerfect, later Windows and MS-Word, and now Mac OS-X and Pages '09. With each new iteration of software it keeps getting less painful, but it's still not a piece of cake.
This time, I began with scanned images of the last printed original copy (2008) for a document that no longer existed in any original computer format (1994). I imported the scans into Optical Character Recognition software included with my Canon printer/scanner.
I was determined NOT to re-type the whole document from scratch, so the editing I describe WAS time-consuming and a bit tedious, but still a bit less painful that starting from scratch. I'm a volunteer and retired. A paid fast(er) touch-typist working in an office (and their supervisor) might strongly disagree!
After cleaning up a few OCR-generated typos, I was also determined not to manually re-create the outline format and the table of contents if at all possible. Even 1980's WordPerfect on floppy discs could automatically generate an outline and a table of contents from marked text!
I used Lists to generate the desired outline format similar to the original, in some cases, correcting errors, but as shown in the above example, there are a few A's without B's and so on, because the original document (1994) was formatted that way, and I didn't want to substantially re-write the Bylaws at this time. (Save that for another day!)
As I edited, with the printed original by my computer, I did delete the original outline I's, A's, 1's a's, and so on as I went through, letting List do the re-numbering, and using Style to format the newly numbered headings.
Simple shortcuts when auto-generating lists: a [Tab] moves the active heading to the next-lower designation, and [Shift]+[Tab] moves it to the next-higher designation. Occasionally, I have to just use [Delete] to back up over the suggested letter, and start over again with [Return] to force the next letter/number.
And opening Inspector, Text, Lists, as shown in the example above, might help you more easily 'control' the outcome, as does Inspector, Document, TOC, noted earlier.
    Hope this helps!

  • Table of Contents links not working after conversion to PDF

I have created links in a MS Word 2007 document, including in a Table of Contents, a List of Tables, as well as internal cross-reference links.  I have converted to a pdf file using Acrobat 9 Pro.  All the links were retained except for the page links in the Table of Contents.  Does anyone have any insight into how to correct this error?

    MG,
You can get links to work in Numbers documents that have been converted to PDF, but it's quirky.
No links survive Printing to PDF
Links outside of tables (links in text boxes, etc.) survive Export in Sheet View
Links inside and outside tables survive export in Page View

  • Table Of Contents - Level Formatting

    InDesign CS3
Ive created a long document that catalogs all of my company's graphic options for our motorcycles.
Each page contains 2 graphics along with their respective part number and graphic name. The part number and graphic name for each graphic are set in 2 separate text boxes and setup as 2 different paragraph styles.
Im trying to create a Table Of Contents that lists, by section, the part number, graphic name and page number for every graphic. Currently my TOC looks like this:
    Section
    Part Number
    Graphic Name5
However, I would like for it to look like this:
    Section
    Part Number Graphic Name5
I don't see an option to keep TOC Levels on the same line...
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you,
    Desi

You can run on entries, but it runs on all entries. You'll just have to do a search and replace.

  • Table of Contents issue in 11.1.2.1

Has anyone seen an issue with a book table of contents when generated in PDF Format. 11.1.2.1
On the side panel where each page is displayed there is a Table of Contents page listed but when you click on the report it does not show up at all. It is the 1st report. No Table of Contents.
    Thanks.
    Judy

    Hi Judy,
I've seen the following bug, which sounds similar, at a client and the issue was fixed with patch set 107:
12800944 – The table of contents does not display and the page numbering is incorrect in a Complete Book in PDF.
Other book bugs fixed in patch 107:
12916617 – The page numbering in a Complete Book in PDF is incorrect.
13071627 - If a Book has page size set to Legal/Ledger/A3/A4, the complete book PDF's page numbering and Book TOC's (Table of Contents) Mapping are wrong.
12802465 - Complete Book in PDF returns a blank page with dots in 11.1.2.1.
12916552 – The table of content links navigates to the wrong report in the Complete Book in PDF.
I don't think it requires other patches to be installed (essbase, APS, Foundation, etc) however it will require re-installation of FR Studio and reconfiguration of the FR Print Server.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers, Iain

  • Is there a way to create a table of contents listing the order of tabs(sheets) in a Numbers document?

I am planning my wedding and I have this huge Numbers document with 20+ tabs and I have plans to add many more tabs. Is there a way to create a table that has two columns: column 1= order that a tab appears, column 2=tab name? For example, my first three tabs are called Venues, Must Haves, and To Do List (in this order. I'd want this table of contents to be in the first sheet of the document, so it would be like sheet 1. Then I 'd want like the cells of column 1 to be like 2, 3, 4 (2nd, 3rd, 4th sheet in the document), and then the cells of column 2 to say Venues, Must Haves, and To Do List. I can make a tiny table of one cell in each sheet that I copied the name of the sheet and then do like a cell reference for column 2, but I'm having trouble w column 1.

There is no referential value for the order of the sheets, just the sheet name. Only two things I can think of to suggest:
Do the same thing for the first column that you do with the second (i.e. put a referential column in the same table as the Name and point to that).
Seriously consider using a word processor program. Numbers is probably the wrong tool.

  • List view of PDF Table of Contents missing

In iBooks, PDF files can have two types of Table of Contents, thumbnail view and list view. My problem is some of my PDF files lack the list view of the table of contents.
I'm under the impression that the list view TOC in iBooks is created from the bookmarks that exist in the PDF file before importing into iBooks. I've been successful in adding new subheadings in the TOC by modifying the bookmarks in the PDF file before installing to iBooks, so I'll be surprised if that's not the case.
I have two files that have bookmarks in the original PDF file, but when I import into iBooks, there is no option for a list view of the TOC, only the thumbnail view. Can anyone offer any help as to why a PDF file with bookmarks won't show a list view TOC when imported into iBooks?
While we're at it, when you tap on the TOC button in a PDF file in iBooks, it always takes me to the thumbnails view. I would prefer it default to the list view. Is there any way to do that?
    Thanks.

There may be more user-friendly ways of doing this, but here's one way:
Open Terminal (in the Utilities folder).
Use "cd" to change directory to the folder you want to print
    eg cd /Users/myuser/Documents
Use "ls" to list the contents to a file
    ls -al > filelist.txt
You can then open the filelist.txt file from Finder in TextEdit and print it.

  • Need to Export a hypertext index list or Table of Content when saving as pdf

I have a catalog that is being converted from print to web and will be exported as a pdf and then converted to a flip book using a flash template. The flash template does have this capability and pdf files can and do import table of content text for navigating the pdf document. What I need to do is to take the Table of Contents list from the catalog (which I have tagged with hyperlinks) and have it appear in the pdf as a text-based table of contents with hyperlinks. I saw one post discussing "InDesign's index feature" but don't see that anywhere in my app. I am using CS3 currently. (been told to stay away from 4 til bugs are worked out of .ai and dreamweaver).

You've stayed away from CS4 so long that CS5 will be shipping in the few weeks.
As for your question, I'm not really sure what you're asking. Who's doing this converting for you?

  • Expandable list - Table of Contents -  Please Help

I used the code found on the following page to create an expandable list that worked great:        Expandable list :  at www.learningmovabletype.com
I created a table of contents for our Policies and Procedures that showed the main topics and when clicked listed each policy subcategory.  The following link is for this page:http://bsacapheadstart.com/PoliciesandProcedures.html
My company bought the Adobe CS4 package that included Dreamweaver several months ago and I am trying to create this same page using it.                          http://grantee.bsacapheadstart.com/Policies%20and%20Procedures.htm
The problem as you will notice if you go to this page and click on the categories, is that only the first topic will expand and all the others will not.
I have reviewed the code several times and do not see any differences between the first topic heading and the others; nor between the code that works on the first page and the page I am creating using Dreamweaver.
I have thought about using the Spry Collapsible Panel or Accordian but it is not exactly what we want.  Besides everyone is already comfortable with this layout.
If anyone could please help, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Start with valid code.  It makes trouble shooting much simpler.

  • Table of Content Help - Anchored Objects/Listing Order

For the love of god this is extremely frustrating.   I have been searching for literally hours trying to find the solution.
I have a large document, linked frames from page 1 through page 44 for example.
On many pages I have figures, and using an incrementing paragraph style, these figure captions are numbered sequentially.
When generating a table of contents, any figures that are in the main linked frames are created in the proper order.
My issue is that on a few pages, I have figures inside anchored objects - basically an anchored text frame with a picture and the figure label text using my paragraph style.
These anchored objects are not being put in the table of contents in the proper order - they are being added to the end of the toc!  Indesign should be smart enough to add items on the page in the proper order - be it the main frame or an anchored one!
    For example
    Figure 1 - page 1
    Figure 2 - page 1
    Figure 3 - page 2
    Figure 5 - Page 3
    Figure 4 - Page 2 <<< huh?
Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated.

After looking at this a bit more, this may or may not work so we might need to get dirty on this one .....................
Some clues can be found here : http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/bi-publisher/bip-bookbinding-176639.pdf
Looking at Page 7, it should be obvious that we can add additional deatils to the reports, including cover pages.
Though, after looking at Page 8, I think I may have you slightly in the wrong direction. toc-template appears to simply cover the commands for the table of contents and there is another template to control everything. But is that file visible to edit?
If you run FRConfig.cmd, you can find more clues.
Go to the MBeans tab, expand com.hyperion, then expand Financial Reporting, and Attributes.
The two attributes that immeidately jump out are TextPrintTemplate and BookTOCPrintTemplate
    - TextPrintTemplate is the FR_TextTemplate.doc file in <<EPM_ORACLE_INSTANCE>>/products/FinancialReporting/bin/ folder
    - BookTOCPrintTemplate is the toc-template.rtf file previously discussed.
Once again, though, the other template exposed to us is most likely just driving the content and is not at a high enough definition level for this to work how you want it to.
I would say to use the example in the PDF and try adding that to the table of contents page before it does all of the loops. Perhaps it will work from there, perhaps not.
If that doesn't work, Thursday we can attempt to drill into this more.

  • Table of content in .book is not linked correctly, it is linked to it self.

    Hi!
I desperately need some advice on an urgent matter. I made a perfekt little .book-file with a table of content at the front of the book.
Then I realized that when i turned it in to a .pdf the table of content ( it is also shown i the left-window when I look at it in acrobat ) is duplicated. The left window show my table of content and it links to the text-rows in the table of content, and then below that it shows the rows of the table of content again, but this time it links to the actuall correct pages.
How can I get rid of this duplication, and just get the correct indexing linking to the pages, but at the same time keeping my table of content in the front of the book?
    Kind regards

When converting a FrameMaker book to PDF, the PDF may include bookmarks for additional paragraph tags (on top of those specified in the book's PDF setup)
The workaround is to specify PDF Setup in the individual file. For example, open your TOC, select Format > Document > PDF Setup, and make sure that the Heading1TOC, Heading2TOC... paragraph tags are not included in the bookmark setup.

  • ID CS5: How to include additional text into a table of contents and how to hide text from it?

    I have the following problem:
    1. I'd like to include additional Information in my table of contents which I don't want to appear in the text I refer to.
Example: I do have a picture with a caption saying:
    picture 1: Blablabla.
And I want to have the source of the picture as additional information in the table of contents:
    picture 1........Blablabla (source: thisandthat)........23
Still I don't want this additional content to disappear, as soon as I update the table of contents!
    How can I achieve that?
    2. And how can I have this the other way round?
Let's say I want the source in the caption, but not in the table of contents.
    So the caption says:
    picture1: Blablabla (source: thisandthat)
but the table of content says:
    picture 1........Blablabla.....................23
I was trying to achieve this by two different praograph styles in the caption. One which would be listed, and one which wouldn't be listed, but this of course resulted in always having two paragraphs in the caption, which I'd like to avoid:
    picture1: Blablabla
    (source: thisandthat)
    Any solution to this?
    Best Regards,
    Rainer Schwachsinn

Sorry, missed the second part of the question. I think the only way to do that is to use invisible "dummy" text of some sort, and if you're going to do it for some entries, you might as will do it for all.
One of the easiest ways is to put the text you want inthe TOC into an anchored frame attached to the actual heading in the text (so it moves along with it). Use a unique paragraph style for this text, and include this style, not the one applied to the headings inthe text, to make the TOC. I usually use a character color of red to make it satnd oout so I don't forget it's there, and the position on the page isn't really critical. Select the anchored frame, open the Attributes panel and make it non-printing. You'll see it in editing mode, the TOC will pick it up (as will variables, if required) but it will disappear on output.

  • How to use different images in the Table of Contents?

Hello everyone, I am creating an iBook about Architecture and I would like to have different images for each Chapter in the Table of Contents... But when I add an image it automatically appears on all the other chapters, too. What am i doing wrong?

You drag the image to the screen and it replaces the placeholder image.
When you hover over the current image, don't you get the message "this is a placeholder . . ." under your mouse pointer?
I think the documentation states that the new image must be jpg or png, but a Photoshop image seems to work too.
In portrait mode, only one image shows at the top of the list of chapters, and that can be changed too.
But in landscape mode, all of the separate chapter images can be accessed by clicking the littel dots at the bottom of the screen when at the TOC page.
