Tabloid Newspaper in InDesign - Bleeds, sizing, etc.

Hi Guys,
I have a lot of experience doing magazines and the lot in InDesign, where artwork goes to the edge of the paper.
I've been tasked with the tabloid-size redesign of a regional broadsheet newspaper.
I will have the newspaper's in-house design team to back me up soon, but I want to get a head start, and I'm a bit baffled.
Wikipedia and various other sources set the page size at  430 × 280 mm (16.9 in × 11.0 in), which is the size of the double spread (so two pages across). I would be inclined to half the width at 215 mm and put each page size in at 215 × 280 mm. (This would be done as 'facing' pages.) Is this the wrong way to do it? Should I put the full 430 × 280 mm in as the page size?
I know it sounds ridiculous, but I've had a measure of other compact/tabloid size newspapers (with a ruler), and they all seem to be much bigger than those sizes. I presume that's because newspaper printing isn't and doesn't need to be very accurate. Is this correct?
If so, what bleeds should I put in for the document? I would be inclined to say 20 mm since printing seems so inaccurate, but this seems way too big. And should these be added using the File > Document Setup window? This seems to add on to the overall width. Is this OK?
I'm sorry for all the questions, and I know I seem ridiculously inexperienced at this lark, but trust me, I'm a quick learner!
All responses are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ed.
[I'm based in Ireland so all sizes are UK/Ireland standard, and I'm using InDesign CS5]

Thanks for your help Peter.
With regards to the cutting apart – how much of a safe-zone should I give myself so that the wrong parts don't get cut apart?
I'm very, very baffled with regards to the sizing of the tabloid. The design team do not know; I am the person tasked with deciding the size (Berliner is being considered), as they currently are a broadsheet newspaper.
The sizes given across the web are 17 (width) x 11 (height). If that is considered the page size, then it would be a very awkward newspaper! Obviously wider than it is tall.
If we are to revert it, as you did, so that it is 11 x 17, we get something that is reasonably OK, but it is simply not the right size, and is out of proportion compared to tabloids.
The thing is, if we half the the 17 x 11, so that it is 8.5 (width) x 11 (height), the proportions look perfect, as with tabloids. Is it possible that newspaper sizes are discussed regarding spreads, and not the actual individual pages? It's not the way I'm used to and you don't seem to be either, but maybe?
As far as I know, UK tabloid and US tabloid sizes are different, so that may be leading to some confusion.
Thanks for your help...
Ed.

  • Creating Tabloid PDF from 2 letter sized pdfs

I am using version 7.1.0 pro and am trying to figure out how to create a tabloid sized pdf document from two letter sized pdf documents, basically making printer spreads for output to a copier. Thanks!

    Chuck:
Do you actually need a PDF this way, or do you just need to print it out this way?
If you only need to print it this way, you can set up your Print setting to "2 Pages per Sheet" in the "Layout" section of your Print settings.
If you actually need a PDF this way, you would have to follow graffiti's suggestion and place the PDFs in an inDesign document. Or you would need a 3rd Party plug-in for Acrobat such as Pitstop to accomplish this.

  • Indesign Bleeds set correct but print wrong

I have a vendor supplied InDesign file built in facing pages with bleeds and marks set to bleed .125" on three sides and 0" bleed on the insides of the pages, however when I print the pages the inside edges also show .125" bleed. I have gone through the panels several times and cannot find why this is happening. We are a commercial printer and use this setup on many jobs and it always works the way we want. Don't know where the issue is and would like to resolve it for future happenings. Thanks

Okay I have attached the pdfs and screen grabs you requested

  • When exporting document to Package in InDesign, bleeds disappear!

I've tried to export to PDF, and the bleeds and crop marks come out just fine. But when I try to export to package, I get this:
Once again, I have the document setup to bleed at 5mm on all sides and you can even see the red line in the background of the screenshot which indicates the bleed area (the outer red line). Why are they not coming up in package settings?  Using InDesign CS6 on Windows 8. Can anyone please help?

When I open the packaged file, in the instructions it still says bleed is missing (set to 0), but the InDesign file opens with correct bleed settings (5mm).

  • InDesign Bleed Problems???

Hi, I am a little new to Adobe InDesign.  I am creating a brochure, and am dealing with bleeds/margins/layout issues in InDesign.  The bleed I need is an 1/8 of an inch all around...
I have 4 photoshop documents that I am importing in to 2 InDesign documents.
*The 2 InDesign documents are the front & back cover(one), and the 2nd & 3rd page(two) for the inside of the brochure.*
    *The 4 photoshop documents are the front cover(1), 2nd page(2), 3rd page(3), & back cover(4).
Here is my dilemma, which I am sure has a couple different answers:  The document(s) I made in Photoshop is the protocol 8.5" x 11"  -  Should I have made that document in Photoshop to incorporate the bleed or can all this be done in InDesign after I import all 4 photoshop documents?
    Any help is appreciated...

Thanks Eugene, that was my first guess...  Is there a way to do a workaround if my files in Photoshop have already been made with No Bleeds incorporated?

  • CS 4 InDesign Page sizing tool

I found a post about this a week ago but lost it. CS 4 got rid of the easy page sizing tool so I could click on 100% or 75% or whatever and easily shift sizes of my pages in the work area.
Apparently there is some new (application) tool on the tool box but I could not find it.
    Thanks for any help.

Hi. I am looking on the tool bar on the top and on the side. I cannot find anything that will allow me to size my page up or down as I am working. So far I have to go to the magnifying tool and use that to work. There is something on the top bar with a white x in a grey square box that has some sizes but it doesn't do a thing so I don't know what that is. I wish they hadn't removed this for CS4.

  • Photoshop - layouts for business cards, bleed edge etc

    Hey
I've been told by some printers that I need to put a bleed edge for them. I'm alright with that part....
But they asked for me to put bleed edge marks so I don't have to pay for the extra layout costs.
Any idea what they meant or how to do it?
    Thanks very much

I'm sure the phone conversation took longer than it would for your printer to add bleed marks. Personally I always hated "bleed" marks added by the customer for a bunch of reasons, but to each their own.
    <br />
<br />Make a file 1 inch bigger than your BC (typically a file 4.5 x 3). Then make guides at 0.375 and 0.5 inches from the top, bottom, left and right. If you set your rulers to inches and hold the shift key while you draw the guides (click on the ruler and drag into the image), you should have an easier time hitting 0.5. Make sure the info palette is visible so you can see the guide coordinates.
    <br />
<br />Then use the pencil tool with 2 pixels width to paint (in black) the marks. Make sure to stay outside the 0.375 guides. This is your bleed and you don't want marks creeping into it. Use the marquee tool to check you got the size right: the inner box (trim) should be 3.5 x 2, and the outer box (bleed) should be 3.75 x 2.25.
    <br />
<br />If I were to build a bleed BC, I would build it 3.75 x 2.25 and tell them it bleeds on all four sides. Their stance is a red flag as far as I'm concerned.

  • Confusion regarding bleed/slug etc.

    Hi there,
I'm currently attempting to set up a document which will be printed and professionally bound.
Scans of my images will be placed in the document along with text, shapes ect.
The binders informed me that for the A5 document (A4 pages halfed lengthways when bound) I need to set a "3-5mm bleed all around" and "25mm from gutter".
Does that mean i set the gutter at 25mm and bleed at 5mm?
Do i need to check what they need for margins and slug? They never mentioned those..
And finally, I need to set a fold line directly down the middle of the A4 page - how would I go about doing that?
    Any response is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

OK, so  I THINK I understand what yo are doing. Pages "1" and "2" will be printed in the same side of one sheet, the other side will be blank. 3 & 4 will go on the next sheet, and so forth. The sheets will get printed, die cut, and folded, then assembled into a book block for binding (almost certainly glued, not stitched) using the loose edges in the binding.
If that's correct, then I might set up as A4 non-facing pages since the back of all sheets will be blank and normal imposition is not possible, and on each page I would make two columns to represent the two pages that will be on that "leaf" in the book. Set the bleed top and bottom at the 3-5 mm, and left and right at the larger dimension as hese are the edges that will wind up being in the grind-off area for binding (what I presume the printer is calling the gutter). For the gutter between columns, use twice the value of what would be the outside margin on a regular book  because when folded iin half that gutter becomes the outside page margin. Set the top and bottom margins to whatever you like, and left and right will be what would normally be the margin at the spine area, so I would make them a little larger. You can add a vrtical guide at the centerline for reference on the master page. Objects that bleed to the outside of the finished book should extend exactly to that line, not beyond.
The tricky part is if there will be objects that need to cross over adjacent spreads of the finished book. For those cases you could try setting the pages not to shuffle and drag two pages together in the Pages panel so you are looking at what is essentially a four-page spread.
A different approach would be to set up as A5 facing pages, do the entire layout as if this were a "normal" book, then place those pages side-by-side into a new A4 document. This would allow you to use automatic page numbering, if you want it, and would make crossovers much easier.

  • Newspaper Workflow with InDesign

I am building a newspaper in InDesign and I'm looking for a workflow to improve the work to all workers.
What i'm looking for is an application where all writers can write news directly in the template, to know the characters and space limitations. Basically is what professional newspapers use.
Does anyone know something like this?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Huge InDesign file jams printer...suggestion on optimizing??

Our company produces a tabloid newsletter via InDesign that contains may photos making the final file over 11MB. (Pictures are saved then placed as JPG). We print this in house for distribution to staff. The problem is that the file is so large that it took 23 hours to print 50 copies! Our goal is to minimize the file size to speed print time but without losing the sharp resolution in the photos. Any help would be appreciated. (We have tried to export to PDF high quality print, but the colors in the document change significantly when this is done.) Thanks in advance.

    Change your Flattener settings perhaps?
To be honest, this is going to come down to what printer you have, whether it has a certified Adobe Postscript RIP, how much RAM, etc as well.
We have Xerox 5500's and a Xerox 7760 and a KM C450 with Fiery and regularly print files in the 50-100mb range without issue.
Worst case, there is a hack we've used successfully in the past for postscript clone printers that basically makes ID turn the page as much of the page into a bitmap as it can before sending it to the printer. Go to Edit->Transparency Flattener Presets and make a new flattener called Bitmap. Slide the Raster/Vector slider all the way to Raster (0) and set the DPI to be the same as your printer (probably 300 or maybe max of 600).
Then when you print, choose that under Advanced->Flattener.

  • InDesign exports to interactive PDF in spreads only

I saw a suggestion in the comments section of the CS5 help file to start a discussion--so here we go...
I've created a newsletter for print in spreads, but when I try to export to an interactive PDF, there is no option to turn off spreads. It would seem that Layout-->single page would get me what I want, but it still pops up firmly in readers spreads.
This PDF is intended for the Web, and I need it to be single page for those who want to print it--it's a real devil to try to print a tabloid-size page onto letter-sized paper.
Eugene Tyson recommended changing the document setup to turn off facing pages--but, as he said, that can present other problems.
I saw that this would probably not be considered a bug--well, how about considering it a simple error? Please fix this, Adobe!

  • Indesign export as PDFX1a

    HI,
I'm exporting an Indesign file containing RGB colour Jpegs as a PDFX1a, in order to convert to CMYK colour. My exported PDF doc has blue hazy areas in it particularly around the edges.
I've made sure the background of my Jpeg images are pure white by using the 'wizard wand.'
My Jpegs 'save as' PDFX1a through photoshop just fine. But I need to use Indesign on this project to set bleed margins etc.
Could anyone help me on this. I'm falling behind on my Uni deadline for this. I don't work a lot in digital, mostly silk screen printing.
    Thanks, Ed.

I've made sure the background of my Jpeg images are pure white by using the 'wizard wand.'
My exported PDF doc has blue hazy areas in it particularly around the edges.
This is a case where you shouldn't be using the jpeg format, save as PSD after you make the selection and set the background to white. When you save as RGB jpeg out of Photoshop, the JPEG compression would add non white compression artifacts to the background which would become more visible on the conversion to CMYK during the PDF export. Also the default PDF exports add another layer of compression so you might want to turn off compression in your export preset.
When you are setting the background in Photoshop, use the eyedropper tool with the Info panel open and set to CMYK and sample around in the white area to make sure everything is actually white 0|0|0|0

  • InCopy workflow for newspaper

We are a small weekly newspaper using Indesign CS3. We want to adopt a workflow using InCopy CS3 that will benefit all users. One goal is to be able to archive newsroom stories to our website that include the main story, headlines and all text associated with that story without too much user intervention if possible. Can anyone suggest an InCopy workflow solution for us?

InCopy helps streamline publication workflows because it allows writers and editors to work on stories within the layout while the design team is still assembling the layout -- that's the broad stroke of it. There's nothing inherently special about InCopy that would assist you in archiving (I assume you mean exporting) text files for a web site.
There are third-party publishing systems which run on top of IC/ID, such as K4, that have optional web publishing abilities. For a small weekly newspaper though it might be overkill to move to a system like that (and quite expensive).
With an off-the-shelf IC/ID workflow, I think you're best served by leveraging the XML capabilities of both apps. Editors and designers can easily apply XML tags to content, and then export the tagged XML from either app. For example if you're using an assignment-based workflow, the editors could be in charge of the exporting of all content in an assignment (headline, byline, body, images, captions for a given article) to a single file for the web team.
There are ways to use XML tagging to create basic XHTML files, or there are ways to apply an XSLT while exporting content that give you more control over the transform.
And of course all this is scriptable with JavaScript, Applescript or VBScript, to help automate the process (the tagging, the exporting, etc.).
Unless you have staff members who know how to do this (or aren't afraid of cracking a couple books to figure it out), you'll probably have to bring on some subcontractor to help you get it set up.
In the meantime this article might give you a head start on how this could work (I think most of the instructions would work in IC as well):

  • IWeb and stills - re-sizing?

I've done a quite elaborate website for a film I'm producing.  I'd like to use the work I did on the website in a press-kit I'm preparing.  Can I use the iWeb project to pull stills for the press kit ... and still get the original resolution of the still?
I've resized the stills in iWeb, but only by dragging IN iWeb, not by actually re-sizing the original stills.  Does iWeb do the actual auto re-sizing for the internet when I save the project, or when I upload to the web?  In other words: can I just grab the stills in the iWeb project and dump them in Pages and resize them (larger) in Pages and still expect to get the original resolution?  Or do I have to go back to the originals in Aperture?
    All ears,
    Ben

Large image files slow a web page download time so they should be reduced in size preferably before dragging into iWeb.
There's not a lot of poimt in dragging in an image that's 1200px x 900px if you are going to reduce its viewable area to 640px x 480px in the application.
This is particularly important now that a growing number of people are viewing sites on portable devices. Ideally you would provide a different size of image for each device type although you can't easily do that with iWeb.
When you create a presskit as a download you would include different sized versions of each image. A reviewer would then choose the appropriate size for whatever media they are using - newspaper, magazine, blog, TV, website etc.
Its even more important with video clip files. You should provide four different sizes in the download and at least three on a website. Here's an example of a reponsive web page which loads three different versions of the movie based on device width...
    http://www.ezmacwebdesign.com/Responsive-Template/video-js.html
As you drag the browser right hand edge to the left to reduce its width you will notice that the poster image changes in size. The browser is loading a different image for each device width and, when the image is clicked, the appropriate video file size plays. On a personal computer you can have all three playing at once if you really want to!
In the above demo I am using VideoJS to play the movie so that I only have to provide one video format - MP4 - in three sizes.
If you use HTML5 for playback you need to provide three formats, each in three sizes as well as three splash images! Even then your movie would not be viewable in some older browsers unless you provide flash fallback or a .swf or .flv file!
The only easy way to achieve this with iWeb would be to offer direct links to the various movie files or to arrange for them to appear in different popup windows.
What you can do with iWeb is to create a smart phone version of your site with the appropriate sized media files...
