Tagging and Watch folders on a HP Media Smart Server

I have a HP Media Server and have moved all my photos/videos to this server so that all three of my PC's may access them easily. I have a few questions that maybe someone can help with.
1. My wife and I use separate PC's and have PSE 7 on them. Apparently when we tag the photo's on the server, the tags are relative to the PC's that we tagged them from (multiple instances) and I would like to know how to merge them so that all PC's accessing the server media can see the Tags regardless of what PC generated them. Also how to prevent this from occurring in the future.
2. This may not be the appropriate Forum to ask the question, but you never know...My wife and I have made a habit of saving media to our home server. This really cuts down on having duplicate file's on multiple PC's. The problem that we are having is that when I try to add the media folders on the server to the "Watch Folder" list, Elements returns an access denied error. Now I know that this is almost certianly an issue with the Windows Home Server OS, but I was wondering if anyone may have experienced this before and has a solution.
Thanks for any help,
Brad

Brad,
While it is possible to store your PSE catalog and photos on a server and share that catalog among several computers, setting it up is tricky and you may not be satisfied with the performance of PSE:
http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Storing_the_catalog
Currently, it sounds like you're storing your photos on the server but each computer has its own PSE catalog file, which is why tagging a photo from one computer won't show up on another (the tags are stored in teh catalog file).
For watching a network folder, see this FAQ:

  • Using HP Media Smart Server and Time Machine

In a small office we have mixed Macs and Windows machines plus an HP Media Smart Server. HP provides Mac client software that allows Time Machine on the Macs to backup to the HP server. This is working fine on two Macs running snow leopard. Another Mac is running 10.5.8. The HP server is visible and accessible. Time machine Preferences even lets me try to select the HP server as the backup device. But when I make that selection, I get the error message,
"Time Machine could not be configured. The built-in network interface could not be found."
I have found a number of articles about this when I search the error message. But by and large those articles have to do with folks building their own intel based machine and then running Mac OS X. Fixes involve messing around with boot files, etc - not something I really want to do.
Does anyone have a clue what might be going on and/or how to resolve this?
    thanks

Good! And since that refers to a way to run OSX on non-Apple hardware (in violation of the License), it probably wouldn't apply to your situation anyway.
I don't easily find specs of this server, but if it doesn't meet the requirements set by Apple, it may not work reliably with Time Machine. See: Disks that can be used with Time Machine.
And be careful here: just because some 3rd-party hardware claims to support Time Machine doesn't necessarily mean that Apple supports it, or that it will work in all circumstances.
First, since this is *unsupported by Apple,* there's nowhere to go when there's trouble. AppleCare will refer you to HP, who will refer you to Apple.
Second, you're risking a future update preventing it from working, and perhaps rendering your backups useless.
From a post in another forum (found by V.K.):
The technical reason why Apple limits Time Machine to 10.5 AFP volumes appears to be to prevent disk image corruption. There were additional features added to AFP in 10.5 to support Time Machine. These presumably allow the disk image engine to force disk image journal data to write out all the way to the disk. Without such features, a network interruption can result in a corrupted filesystem on the disk image despite journaling. Remember, journaling relies on the journal being written all the way to disk before the changes take place. If you can't guarantee that (e.g., because of network/NAS buffering) then the journal is useless. Time Machine appears to rely heavily on disk journaling to deal with network drop-outs, interrupted backups, and the like. Take this away and your data is at risk.
If the NAS you are using supports these features it should report them to the OS and you should natively be able to choose that volume. If you have to trick the OS to use the volume it means the NAS does not support it.
To summarize: if you care about your backup data you should avoid using non-natively supported AFP servers.

  • I can not get imovie to see my external hard drive it is an HP media smart server

I can not get imovie to see my external hard drive it is an HP media smart server and I need to be able to house all my video on this server but it access in imovie.

amanda0509, I think you need to reformat the disk to something iMovie is able to work with. iMovie won't allow you to copy or move projects/events to a disk that is not formatted as a Mac OS Extended disk. Once you format it however, it won't be usable by a Windows PC. Are you trying to acces the media smart server by your Mac and also by some PC by any chance?

  • Photoshop 10 and watched folders on Mac

    Hello,
I was a little disappointed with Photoshop 9 for Mac users that the watched folders feature that I found so useful on the Windows platform wasn't available. I understand this was due to a problem with the Mac OS which couldn't be rectified in time for the release.
Is the watched folders feature available with Photoshop 10 for Mac?
    Thanks.

This seems related.  At least my questions to Adobe brought me here.  I tried taking one photo from iPhoto and it brought all 8000 including all movies.  It then proceeded to make thumbnails for them, all without my asking.  Is there any adequate tutorial for Elements 10 that steers one around such pitfalls.  I have not used Photoshop before so perhaps it assumes all sorts of familiarity which i don't possess.  The Help doesn't seem very helpful.  Tutorial films work or don't work, seemingly on a whim.

  • Can I set 'watched folders' to automatically import media to my library?

One thing I've long missed in iTunes is the ability to auto-import new music as and when I drag it into one of my music folders. Unfortunately, as I keep my music in a few different places (one large folder for my album collection, one large folder for my iTunes and 'singles' collection, DJ stuff, audio projects for work etc...) the options provided to me by Apple don't really seem like they're going to work for me. For instance, if I click 'File>Add to Library' then it's going to take me forever to remember which tracks are new since I last updated, and in which folders; I can't just re-add the entire folder tree as there's a lot of them and I'll probably end up with a load of duplicate entries. iTunes' supposed 'Automatically add to iTunes' folder also won't work for the same reason. I actually can't see how that folder helps; surely people want to automatically add ALL their new media to their media player program? I can't see anybody placing their whole music collection within a single folder called 'Automatically add to iTunes'?!! Surely there's a better way to watch a variety of folders for new media and import it automatically as it's created??!
    Any suggestions??

That is not how Automatically Add works. Once iTunes notices a file in the Automatically Add folder, it immediately whisks it away to its "natural" iTunes location, i.e. in Artist/Album folders under the designated iTunes Media folder, and creates a library entry. And the Automatically Add folder will be once again empty.
Try it with one file so you can see it in action. Perhaps it will meet your needs.

  • Compressor, Applescript, and Watch Folders

I know this is probably easy, I'm just missing it. I'm guessing somehow one can combine a Compressor Droplet with Folder Actions to create a Watch folder for automating file compressions. Drop a file in, the Droplet processes the file and places the new file in the folder set up when the Droplet was made. Sounds easy right? Can anyone point me to an example script somewhere or let me copy their? I guess all I really need is the syntax to use in the script that will trigger the droplet when new files are added.
I bet a lot of people would appreciate this trick.
    Be the man.

I'm not sure if you still need this, but I wrote the script file two days ago to do this. I needed it so our department can drop(ftp) files into a public folder on our FCP machine and it will compress the files and dump them into a "compressed" folder where people can pick them up. I want to add email notices and other bells and whistles later but this should get you going. Mind you you will have to change some things to fit your file system and folder locations...:
property dialog_timeout : 30 -- set the amount of time before dialogs auto-answer.
on adding folder items to this_folder after receiving added_items
    try
    tell application "Finder"
--get the name of the folder
set the folder_name to the name of this_folder
    end tell
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
open added_items using application file "For iPod.app" of folder "Desktop" of folder "ollie" of folder "Users" of startup disk
    end tell
    end try
    end adding folder items to
You just need to put the above text into the applescript editor and save. Then add it to /library/scripts/folder action scripts/... Then when you "configure folder actions" in finder it will be in the list to add to that folder. You may not need that first line, I left it in there from the "add items to folder" script...
Let me know how it works for you...

  • Launchd and watching folders

At http://developer.apple.com/macosx/launchd.html there is the statement,
"If you are about to write a program which will scan a directory periodically for files, stop; launchd already does that, and probably does it better. Services can be launched on access to a network port, on changes to files, on creation of files in a particular directory, on user login, or on a periodic basis. The majority of programs which wait for work to do are waiting for one of these events. Let launchd do the work."
I'm particularly interested in Services can be launched ... on creation of files in a particular directory What I want to do is watch a directory, and anytime a file gets created there copy it. It's a little tricky, since the directory is /tmp, and the files are there for only a short time. And they might appear and disappear after boot but before login; I'm not sure about that.
Can anyone point me to an example of a launchd plist file that will help me get started?
I suppose Applescript or Automator might be able to help. I just haven't looked there yet.
    Thanks

  • What are the /rpc/ and /ews/ folders used for in Microsoft Exchange Server?

I come across these two folders constantly when seeing the Microsoft Exchange server externally (other folders are usually /owa/, /powershell/ and /ecp/.
I've looked everywhere online I can think of but cannot find an easy-to-understand description that clearly understands it.
I notice that both folders are blocked by login boxes which are usually either Basic or NTLM authentication, why is this? Should they be hidden completely from external access?
Any help will be much appreciated, this is also my first post so apologies for any conventions I've missed.

  • Media Smart Server Remote Access IE

I have recently purchased and installed my MediaSmart Server.  So far, I'm very happy with my purchase.  I have two issues and both revolve around Internet Explorer.
Issue 1:  I have created a few remote access accounts and they seem to work fine when using something other than IE.  My IE friends get to my .com site and even get as far as being asked for their user name and password.  After the enter it and hit enter, it brings them back to re-enter user name and password.  My Firefox friends get right in.
Issue 2:  IE supposedly allows the ability to seleect multiple photos and up-load them to the share folder I have created.  I say supposedly because of the above issues.  In any other browser (FirefFox) you have to select one photo at a time and after you have selected all the photos you wish to upload, then select upload and all the photos will load.  Why would they (HP & MSoft) not allow other browsers to select more then one file at a time?

Well i don't think you have an option to access media server from the remote location?
But you can access your drive from the remote location using FTP feature.

  • "Watch Folders" in iTunes?

Why doesn't  itunes automatically update library when files are added or removed from folders ALREADY in the library? i.e. "Watch Folders" like MANY other media players do." I believe this is a feature iTunes NEEDS, especially for large libraries.
Drop a file or files into a folder that iTunes is watching....open iTunes and there it is.
Delete a file or files from a folder that iTunes is watching.... open iTunes and there is a warning "These files are missing, do you want them removed from the                                                                                                                                                             library or would you like to locate them?"

This is a user-to-user support forum. Apple don't read these pages for suggestions. Use iTunes Feedback for that. However this is a long-standing request from many users so my guess is, if it hasn't happened by now, it won't happen...
iTunes Folder Watch makes a good substitue for this missing feature.

  • Media Smart DVD player plays Blu-Rays only in letterbox format.

I've checked the settings window, and letterbox is the only option available. Is there any way to correct this?

    @blheinz
I'm confused, if you mean letter-box with the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, then this is normal.
If the original content of the Blu-ray was filmed in 2.40:1 then you will see the black bars and there are no adjustments in Media Smart to correct this.
I think there may be in Cyberlinks Power DVD10, but I have never played with the settings.
Find a movie that is 1.78:1 and it will fill the screen.
Directors don't like people adjusting the aspect ration of their precious movies so it is difficult to zoom the film up to get rid of the bars.
I think LG makes Blu-ray players that will do this, but they may have changed that.

  • Adobe Media Encoder CS5 Watch Folders

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but I couldn't find an Adobe Media Encoder forum, and since we purchased After Effects to get Media Encoder I figured this might be a good place to start.
Basically, we have a dedicated computer set up with Adobe Media Encoder, and we set up several watch folders on a network drive. We have several files that must be several different codecs, so Media Encoder is really an awesome solution to this problem. However, the only problem we've been running into is sometimes Media Encoder doesn't actually watch a folder. For example, we have a "For web" folder and a "For VOD" folder. The for web folder has had absolutely no problems as far as watching and pulling in goes. The "For VOD" will sometimes not pick up files, but if media encoder is closed and then reopened, it picks up all of the files in that folder, but then again, will not pick up additional files in that folder.
The Media Encoder machine is running on Windows 7 (due to one of the codecs being Windows only), while all of the other machines in the department are macs. I have tested setting up the same system on one of our macs and we get the same problem. We are using an SMB network, but also have DAVE clients on all of our macs.
My initial theories are that it's either: A.) Something with the network, or B.) Something on the computer interupting the network connection. One of the IT guys briefly checked out the situation, changed around some network settings, and concluded that it must be an issue within Media Encoder itself.
Also, as a side note, I did check for updates with Adobe updater and everything is up to date.
Any ideas would be fantastic! And sorry if I'm leaving out crucial information in order to solve our situation, I'm not sure what all would be relevant, but just let me know what you would need!
    Thank you!

Typically, Adobe apps do not work as well in a networked environment.  You might try moving the watch folders to a local drive on the Win 7 machine and see if that makes any difference.  If it does, there's your solution.
