Taking iMac to Apple Store to Be Looked At, Will it Cost Me Money?

I'm taking my 1st Gen, 24" iMac to my local Apple Store on Saturday (already have an appointment) because its starting to exhibit some weird graphical issues (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8677052#8677052), but thats not what I wanted to ask about. It isn't in warranty anymore and I didn't buy the extended Applecare (big mistake) so what I wanted to know is, will it cost me any money upfront just to have the Genius examine my iMac. I know that the graphics card at least needs to be replaced, possible the logic board but I would like to know if I'm gonna need to shell out some cash upfront just to confirm my theories.
Thanks!

Have you ever called an Apple store in this area? All I get is a recording stating their hours and location... ???
The genius's (or genii?) don't consult by phone. Applecare does if you pay for it.
You make appointments to see a genius online quite simply.

  • HT4528 I am due for an upgrade on 5/23 and I wanted to find out - can I bring my old iphone 4 to the apple store and get a new iphone 5 through the apple store instead of verizon?  Will it cost the same to get the phone as through Verizon?

I am due for an upgrade on 5/23 and I am trying to find out if I can get my phone through the Apple store?  I have an iphone 4 and am hoping to upgrade to a iphone5.  Just want to make sure if the price is the same as if I went to a Verizon store to upgrad.

I don't believe they were looking for a trade in, they are due for a subsidized Verizon upgrade. I think the bringing the iPhone 4 was for setting it up and transferring as Verizon does not require you to swap your previous phone for an upgrade.

Of course not. It's a hardware problem, so it can't be fixed by upgrading software. The only option you have got is to take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller.
That error indicates a problem with the hard drive. What you have to do is to make a backup of your files and take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller, so they can confirm that the problem is the hard drive and not the SATA connector, which could be worse.
If it's a hard drive issue, it's not expensive (about $100-200, depending on the hard drive). If it's a SATA connector issue, the whole logic board may have to be replaced.
Note that you can replace the hard drive yourself if you want, but the cost between doing it yourself and taking the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller is similar

Hi, i have a macbookpro 13, late 2012. I bought it last year october and its an year old and now out of warranty. This morning the computer did not boot, so i went down to apple store and they looked at it and said its a logic board failure and needs replacement worth £350. The tech at apple store gave no explanation, why suddenly, my computer decided not to start at all and said to me it was a logic board failure for no apparent reason and requires replacement. I have maintained the laptop in a pristine condition. Now I feel I have been cheated. This clearly means the product is substandard as a £1100 laptop is not expected to fail in just over a year. My last laptop PC which was worth £450 served me for 4 years before it crashed and lived for another 2 years until I decided to get a mac. This is ridiculous. I don't have apple care at the moment which translates as pay to get it fixed. Anybody in my situation ? I want to sue apple for selling me a substandard good . Any thoughts? Should I go for another pc for £500 because there is no guarantee even after the laptop were fixed by apple for £350 it would last for another year. I need a reliable machine.

This morning my MBP just woke up from sleep and is working without any glitches. I don't know what to say about this.

I can not confirm this kind of experience.
Even here in Germany, where articles are sold after the U.S. market is supplied, I had no problem buying a Lightning cable yesterday.
There were about 20 to 30 cables available in the customer area alone, not to mention what they perhaps had in their storage.
So why not make a short trip to Munich, Bavaria, visit the Octoberfest and buy a Lightning cable.
What makes me much more angry is that I was told there is no dock planed for the iPhone 5.

    Buy Snow Leopard here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Install it, update to OS X 10.6.8 using Software Update, and then you'll be all set with iOS 7.

I'm assuming you can..now I don't know the prices for your area, you'll have to check around, I just did a quick web search and I'm pulling all sorts of prices up, I'd look into a repair facility near you and see what they can do for you :-) shouldn't be too expensive though! Good luck!

Hi I have only 2 days in USA to buy Mac Book Pro 13" with Retina display. The issue here is that I'd like to get the westerns spanish keyboard and at the apple store the guy said it will take 6 days. I was wondering if I do the purchase within the express checkout, Will I be able to get the laptop before leaving NY on the 7th of May 2014?
I do not have any experience with the express checkout, actually I do know how it works, any advice please?
    Thanks!!!!

Call the store on the telephne and ask. However, I doubt it since a store would not normally have an item with non-USA features
Also, this is the Mac Pro desktop forum. I requested your post be moved to the MacBook Pro laptop forum

If that iPhone was orignally sold in the US, Out of Warranty replacement cost
    will be
    Phone 4, iPhone 3GS,
    iPhone 3G, Original iPhone
    $149
Replacement will be an iPhone of the same color and GB. There is no option to upgrade
    using Out of Warranty replacement.

  • Best way to replace defective 24" iMac?  Apple Store or Phone Call?

My new 24" iMac has a bunch of stuck pixels that cleared for a day, then came back this morning. Had it to the Apple Store and the guy was really nice and marked out all the bad pixels and said it definitely could be replaced and/or fixed for me.
If Apple Store does it they will fix the screen and get it back to me in a week or so.
But it sounds like some people have had Apple send them replacement iMacs - is this correct? That would be wonderful to not have to lose my only system for the week. My business relies on me using my computer so... yeah.
Advice on this is appreciated, after all these years and all these Macs this is the very first time I've had a bad unit...

    Hello,
That is actually not unusual for Apple on the phone.
I've had them give me trouble on anything that they considered cosmetic on the phone. And, eventually consenting to let me take it to the local service center for them to inspect and rule on.
They defer to the visual inspection of the local service center since they can actually see it.
So, if the local service center felt it was worth replacing, then I would just go back to him and work with them. That will likely increase your odds significantly.
I've had Apple send me to the local service center for:
    1) A keyboard that cracked on it's own. Came out one morning and it was cracked. Apple said on the phone that it was impossible for the keyboard to break without me dropping it or breaking it myself. I explained that I keep things tied so they cannot fall off the desk. They sent me to the local service center to get a visual ruling on it. He said that if the local service center said it was not broken by physical impact, then they would replace it. I asked how someone could visually tell such a thing, and he said he had no idea. I took it to the local service center, and had a new one ordered within the hour.
    2) A machine arrived with a physical chip in it's case (the bezel on the iMac). They said they couldn't tell me for sure. But, sent me to the local service center for inspection. The local guy looked at it, and my packing slip showing I just received it, and ordered me a new bezel.
    3) A burned-in LCD Screen. Looked like I had carved my screen into it with a razor-blade. They sent me to the local center for a ruling. The guy looked at it, and confirmed it was definitely 100% burned-in / permanently damaged. He ordered a new screen and came to my house to replace it. Actually, he even came to my house to inspect it (since I had AppleCare).
So, deal with the local guy. If he believes it to qualify for replacement, then Apple will do it. Let him order the part.
    I hope this helps.

  • IPad security When taking to the Apple store for repairs

I'm taking my iPad to the Apple store today. I'm logged onto most of my social sites, etc. How do I make my iPad secure so no one looks at my photos or any other info like my emails when it goes in for repair.

Granted my experience was best buy, not an apple store, but I returned my iPad a couple of years ago because it had an issue. Best Buy exchanged it and before I gave them my old one I asked and they let me go in and 'erase all content and settings', which wiped it clean.
Apple and Best Buy do have strict rules about customer data but they don't and can't make promises, probably due to liability issues. So doing it yourself is the one way to make sure, and I have yet to run into any store person that wouldn't allow the user to wipe the device.
If the employee balks, ask to talk to a manager and just tell them you want it wiped. You should have no issue at all. Honestly, I don't think they want access to your data any more than you want them to have it.

  • Wifi dropping in iMac and apple store geniuses have never heard of it

I started having wifi dropping on my IMac and recently figured out it was due to upgrade to lion through Internet search. So today I went to apple store here in northlake mall in Charlotte nc. Asked one of the geniuses about the issue and how we can fix it. He looked at me like I have no idea what I am talking about. He said he never heard of it. I told him that the problem is discussed all over apple website and he said he goes on all the apple discussion forums and he never heard of the issue. So I showed him this website and people discussing the problem. His face turned red and he told me to just make an appt. bring the computer in. My question is if you don't know what I am talking about then why would I bring the computer in when iMac is so heavy. I am just upset that apple people still don't know about this issue and have no solution for it. Come on apple.

Strange that they didn't know about it... were they just visiting appleisflawless.com?
Hi, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
    Also, turn off IPv6:
    System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6
    Or whatever Interface you use.

  • IMacs in Apple Stores

I already have a Macbook Pro and I'm hoping to buy an iMac in the near future. However, I thought it'd be better if I bought from from an Apple store. My nearest computer shop (PC World) sell iMacs but not the latest models, so surely they'd sell them in Apple Stores. I also felt that it'd b nicer to buy it right there and then rather then wait for it to deliver after ordering on the internet.
Then it came to mind about customising. I see it's an option on the Apple website, but I'm assuming you can't ask for such customisations instore? Would Apple Stores have a range of models to overcome this problem, or would they just have the one model, hoping the customer would accept that?
    Thanks

    Hi jaychristie909 -
I bought my iMac from the Regent Street store in London. They do stock different configurations but as they are always very busy it can be pot luck if you're after something different from a regular configuration. Best to call and see what they have available, then ask to reserve it. If they tell you they can't reserve items then that's not what they told me - I've had items reserved for 24hrs.
I originally ordered mine online after wanting to "customise" it a little. The delivery time went up from 24 hours to nearly 14 days (it's worth remembering that when ordering online from Apple they have several terms such as "shipping" which doesn't necessarily mean "delivery"). That was too long to wait so I cancelled the order and went to the Apple store and just bought a 24inch model and added RAM myself. I'd always advise adding your own RAM as it's far cheaper. You can try [Crucial|http://www.crucial.com/uk> which is where I got mine from - they are cheap, reliable and deliver quickly. There are plenty of others too.
    Hope that helps.
