  • Home hub 3 and gaming

Hey all im new to bt broadband but have a quick query to ask of anyone who can help.
I live in an area where broadband speeds arent great tbh, when i lived at my parents the download speeds would never go above 1.3 mbps but i assumed that was cos they had a basic bb package with aol. Never the less though even with the poor transfer rates i almost never had a problem with lag when playing games online on my ps3( cod:black ops mainly).
I have now recently moved out and decided to get my bb through bt as they said that they can give my 10mbps for my area although they was honest and said the reality of the speed would more be in the region 0f 6 mbps but this was still very satisfactory for me.
At the mo im only getting 2mbps but im aware it can take up to 10days of my line being monitered at the exchange ( which happens to be a 10 min walk tops from the house) before they increase the speed. This im also fine with but heres my problem. At mum and dads i would almost never get lag at all even with my transfer rates being so low but now im running my wireless off the new home hub 3 and with a slightly better transfer rate than my parents house ive noticed online gaming very laggy indeed. Ive tried port forwarding but that still didnt make a difference.
Can any body else shed some light as to what could be the cause?
Thanks for reading all of the above i know theres quite a bit to read through lol

Hi arnie30uk, as Darren said gaming and wireless is never gonna be great. Have you thought about trying one of the units that use your home power cables e.g.
    http://www.google.co.uk/#sclient=psy&hl=en&source=hp&q=network+through+power+outlet&aq=1&aqi=g5&aql=...
Only thing you need to be aware of with most of these is that both units need to be on the same circuit i.e if you have down stairs sockets on one fuse and the upstairs on another then they may not work.

  • BT home-hub is HORRIBLE for gaming.

I'm using the home-hub 1.0 on my computer, I was sent the latest one but it turns out it does not even work on my system (upon calling your call centre, apparently I have to go out of my way to update my hard wear from 2007-08 which is unacceptable).
    Let me give you an example with one of my games I use called Killing Floor and the program it runs on called Steam;
It is because the router is deciding to disconnect your game 1 minute after getting a server list. There is a rule preset, and hidden, on the router on UDP ports 27010-27011 which has a timeout of 1 minute. When Killing Floor connects to the Steam master server, usually on one of these two ports, this rule is triggered. However, after the initial connection, there is no data passed from the master server, and Killing Floor communicates directly with each server. Exactly one minute after clicking on Internet Games in KF, or clicking refresh, and receiving the initial data from Steam, this rule expires, because no more data has been passed, and it considers the connection closed. This has the effect of messing up the connection to the server, because it now wants to change the port that it is using to transmit or receive data on, and obviously the server wants to keep using this port. Hence you become to all intents and purposes, out of sync with the server.
I've tried port forwarding from the example list, I have even tried manually entering port codes. Nothing works, I still get the same problems and connection drops. I would try to go into the Telnet command prompt to delete this stupid rule the Home-hub uses to stop me playing games, but guess what? The new Home Hubs, to the best of my knowledge, have this feature missing or locked, and it was disabled on the earlier ones through updates. Thanks for that.
I'm not even sure if my hub updates at all and recently, my hub keeps losing connection. This is horrible service I am getting and I am more inclined to rip out this router and use a custom one to actually use the Internet and play games online.

    Chris456 wrote:
On games that use a Source game directly then I have a few problems. When I first connect to a server I will drop out, second rejoin works fine. This has started to effect other games now when it never used to, like WoW.
I recently installed the latest Hub that I had with success (1.5 I think) but I'm still getting the same problems, so I tried to go to Applications and Sharing in my Hub-manager controls and I selected the device 'Steam Games' and 'World of Warcraft' and clicked add and then apply. So I join WoW and 1 minuet in I still get dropout problems, whats contributing to this? I am starting to believe like others have stated that something has happened to the net speed because it never used to do this with WoW itself. I don't want to risk breaking my hub by trying to manually update the firm-wire etc, so I might try and call BT tomorrow and ask for assistance.
I have tried accessing the Telnet numerous times but I always get the same message "could not open connection to host on Port 23: Connection failed". I am not sure how I can get this port open, anyone know how? Would be appricated. I have not tried the MTU either, guess I could try that.
    This any good...wild guess... https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1452-HCVB-6984

  • Infinity 2 package (so fiber optic) on a Home Hub ...

Hi people I'm a little stumped with whats occurring with my Home Hub 5. I'm moved into my current flat in January and had the Infinity 2 package installed at that point.
Now I will add that the speed hasn't been terrible, which is why I never really noticed before until I saw another HOME HUB 5 setup today at my cousins and his is wired differently to mine with a completely different modem and router to mine (well I only have the Home hub 5 doing both jobs for me but he has two separate devices given to him one of which was from B.T) thought we pay the same and we live very close to each other. So whats confusing me is that my HH5 has a DSL cable going into the back of the Home HUB 5 as an input from my one and only phone socket in my flat and he has a white modem feeding his Home Hub 5 with a RED WAN cable as an iput.
So I have just the one cable and mine is a DSL connection (not RED WAN), and his has the RED WAN lead, which is clearly fiber optic feed from a separate modem.
So does this mean I only get DSL+2 max and not fiber optic speeds??? because clearly I dont have fiber optic running into the back of my home hub. I'm paying for A BT infinity 2 package which I'm guessing should be a Fiber optic set up but yet I have DSL cable or can they make me pay the same and give me older technology???
As mentioned I was at my cousins earlier today and he pays the same as me money wise, he is four streets away but yet has the RED WAN input (which is clearly fiber optic) and Im paying the same but yet only have a DSL input.
Now I have looked online and it would appear that they may only have to wire fiber optic to the house (curb) and the internal wiring from the master bell socket to the whole building is down to my land lord but my question is thought should I be paying for a fiber optic package when I'm clearly on a DSL connection package inside the property??? should this of not been mentioned to me when it was set up, like "sorry mate I'm fitting DSL and not fiber optic here, enjoy"
My other question is after this discovery today wanted to get rid of the Home Hub 5 for a third party modem/router which I already had. I have a Belkin DSL+2 from my last address but always thought I couldn't use it here because I was unaware that I was running DSL, so today I plus it in and set it up correctly and now the Belkin cant/wont connect.
I have ran speed check tests on the Home Hub 5 and I'm getting about a ping of 29 and above 70 mbps down and above 18 mbps up, but that's only to one site and that's only minimal packets of data (I have no idea how reliable these tests are) (speedtest.net)
Just with the new Belkin flitted (its a modem and router) it cant connect as the DSL connection bums out all the time every time I try to connect.
I'm guessing this is because for a DSL connection in the flat its quite good and the Belkin cant handle it???
but if you try and find a modem/router which is fiber optic via a DSL connection, there is no such thing, how is my home hub 5 running such high ish speeds via a DSL connection??? and can I get a better modem/router than the free Home Hub 5 which will run off a DSL connection but at fiber optic speeds???
Should I be getting these speeds??? are the speed tests talking rubbish???
Can I get a better modem router than the home hub???
Please help the Home Hub 5 is really not helping my gaming :-(
    Many Thanks
    Rich.

You have a Homehub 5 which has a built in VDSL modem. Your speeds indicate you are on Infinity 2. You would not be able to get those speeds on ADSL. To check you can  use this speed tester then carry out the further diagnostics and post back a screen shot of all the results including your IP profile for up and down. This test must be done with a wired connection.
    http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/
Because you have a Homehub 5 can you also post the stats from 1-12 by logging onto the homehub management pages then troubleshooting > helpdesk. http://bthomehub.home/ This will show your connection  type and speed.
Your cousin will more than likely have an Openreach modem and a Homehub 4. The Homehub 4 does not have a VDSL modem built in hence the reason it must be connected via the Openreach modem.

  • BTHub4 - gaming lag

    Good afternoon,
I have just installed my HH4 to replace my old router, the old router was set by BT to non interleaved, I do not know how to check if my account is still non interleaved and I am suffering considereable lag during gaming.
The Xbox is hard wired (ADSL)
    Cheers,
    Rich

    Thanks John for your reply,
I have had a look under troubleshooting and the Latency setting is "Fast", but I cant find anything regarding interleaved etc, I did just carry out a swap from my old router to the home hub 4 so taking on board what you said it should still be as set by BT
Any other ideas ? or am I just going to have to suffer until super fast broadband arrives in the sticks?
    Cheers

  • Xbox One and xbox 360 on the same Home Hub 4

I currently have an xbox one and 360 directly connected to a Home Hub 4 (with different internal static IP addresses  allocated to the xbox units).  I want to configure port forwarding on the Hub to enable access to xbox live and other gaming services.
I have created the game profiles one the hub and can allocate to one of the devices, but when I try to allocate (either the same or another profile), I get a conflict error.
I understand why this is happening and was wondering if there was a simple way to resolve this (without giving both xboxs the same IP address, and only having one online at any given time)?
    Many thanks

    Hi there,
If you are using UPnP, then you will need to use what's known as "Port Range Triggering".
You can't use "Port Range Forwarding" as the limitation of this is that it expects the ports to be directed to one internal IP address.
The ports you need to forward are as follows:
    53, 88, 80 and 3074.
Disable DMZ (should be disabled by default on the Home Hub 4, but double-check) and also disable "Port Range Forwarding", if this option is available.
Lastly, you will need to set your MTU to 1364 to avoid lag issues.
*DISCLAIMER: This is generic advice, sourced from the internet, so I cannot be held responsible for it's accuracy, as I don't use a Home Hub router*
EDIT: Here's a Youtube link that explains the process visually. Although the user here doesn't use a Home Hub, essentially the process is the same.

  • Configuring a BT Home Hub to Reduce Disconnections

Hi, I have had disconnections over the last 2 days while I was playing poker. This has caused me a great deal of inconvenience.
I've been in touch with Pokerstars and have sent them log files, and they seem to believe that they have found the issue, and have given me instructions on how to solve it.
Firstly, is it possible for me to implement these instructions into a BT Home Hub 3? Are there instructions anywhere for how to go about doing this?
And also, I have had ongoing internet problems over the last year, which involved dropping connection when the phone rang but even sometimes just randomly, however, these problems have finally been solved, temporarily at least.
I am led to believe that implementing these instructions will not affect the work that BT has done to solve our dropping connection. Is this true? When these Pokerstars cutouts are happening I can still open my browser and the Hub still shows the internet as being on.
    Cheers in advance, Tom.
    Hello Tom,
    Thank you for contacting PokerStars.
The Network Status Report (NSR) you provided verifies this issue stems from a local problem and not from our site. This report runs a ping trace to various websites around the world to test your connection in general.
Please allow us a moment to break down that report and demonstrate. The set of traces listed below are ran to Australia, Cambridge (UK), US West and East coasts, (US) Manx Telecom (IOM), and the Pokerstars.com Website (IOM). With the exception of the PokerStars website, none of the other servers belong to PokerStars nor are they related to your connection to our servers. We use these sites to test your overall connection and path of data communication. We have only included small snippets of each trace and you may review the file you sent to review the entire path.

As you can see the traces fail starting at hop # 1 for all sites traced.
Hop #1 belongs to your router, which means that it may be blocking our software from connecting properly, as sometimes the default firewall that routers have can interfere with our client’s connection. Most routers are fine pieces of equipment, but sometimes they need to be updated and configured for online gaming software.
Please set the trigger (automatic port forwarding) for the following ports: 26002, 443 and 22.
Using a Web browser, bring up your router's configuration page. By default, the URL is 192.168.0.1 (or similar), the user name is "admin", and the password is blank. Once you have accessed the router configuration page follow these instructions as a guideline (exact instructions may vary depending on router model).
    1. Click the Advanced tab
    2. Click the Applications button
    3. Click the Enable button
    4. After Name, enter "PokerStars" or anything you wish to label this setting
    5. After Trigger Port, enter 26002
    6. After Trigger Type, choose TCP
    7. After Public Port, enter 26002
    8. After Public Type, choose TCP
    9. Click "Apply"
    10. Repeat these instructions for ports 443 and 22
Some players have also reduced the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) setting from 1,500 to 1,200 with excellent results. We recommend you to use the value of 1,312 as theoretically speaking it will be compatible with most equipment running on 53 byte packet sizes.
Updating the firmware on the router may also stabilize the connection, but if it does not then you may need to acquire a different model or a different brand of router, or work without a router (running your cable/DSL modem directly to your computer). As a router provides some minimal natural firewall capabilities, we do recommend using a router.
To upgrade your firmware, please contact the router vendor or manufacturer.
We suggest using a wired connection from your computer to your router as wireless connections (WiFi) are generally speaking less stable. If you use a wireless connection, please check to see if your router has a Turbo or G option and turn it off. For example, in the wireless option of your router's configuration page, you may find a field with 'B/M/G Mixed' which can be changed to 'B/M Mixed'. This will disable the G option. Some "Super-G" or "Super-G Turbo" routers have a problem running in Turbo mode. Apparently they use "channel hopping" to bond multiple channels in support of this feature, but it is highly susceptible to interference from other 2.4GHz wireless networks and devices. Turning off the channel hopping feature (or the Super-G/Super-G Turbo mode) of such devices will turn them into a standard 802.11g wireless device and may make them more stable. Please contact your router vendor or router documentation for more assistance with turning off these features of your router.
We hope this information is useful to you, please let us know if you need anything else.

You just need to forward the port.
    Please see Port forwarding problems
Look at the example for VPN, and simply call it something else, and alter the port number to 26002.

But I can't find where it is or how to kick it off. I have the network "secured" as much as the hume hub will allow so am not happy to find interlopers there. Also noticed that the number of MB downloaded the other day was rather high (~ 1GB/day) considering no one had been here.
Very odd. Any home hub experts out there who can tell me how to disconnect people? The odd thing is that there is no entry in the "Devices" section of the page. Any suggestions or insight will be appreciated!
    Thanks,

Funny thing that - I do. After rummaging through the network settings on the PS3 it seems that it is by default in 'lurk mode' where it does not register itself with the DNS hence could not get to it from the home hub. It was switched off. Odd.
Also seems that the amount of bandwidth used according to BT on viewYourBroadbandUsage is *much* lower than that reported by the router. Odd indeed. Hmm...
Anyhow, thanks DS for the pointer!
    No probs
You could always disconnect the PS3 from the hub when online gaming isn't needed...
(And when you do, name the device via the hub manager, fix it to the issued DHCP address and no more 'who is this on my system')

    Hi all,
To stop online intruders from anywhere in the world gaining access to your Hub, Network (ie devices connected to your home network) a firewall monitions the outgoing and incoming data that flows through the home hub so it can block suspicious data packets that may cause harm to your network.
Disabling your Home Hub firewall can open up your network to external attack, so you need to take appropriate security measures to protect your network.
BT strongly recommends that the firewall is not left disabled as this makes your network very vulnerable to attack by hackers.
    Hope that helps.

  • Home Hub Type A Or B

hi all can somebody tell me the differance between the home hub type a and b,i currently have the type a ,and im thinking of getting a type b,because ive heard there much better for online gaming, can someone tell me if this is the case

     Hi there,
The type A hubs (of which there were two types with different internals) have something of a reputation for being pretty poor for gaming.  The type B hubs have a differnet circuit board to the A types and the firmware is also different.
Not being an avid gamer myself I can't offer first hand advice, but there have been noticeably fewer complaints on the forum since it was introduced.

  • Airport Express with BT Home Hub and Xbox 360

    Hi,
I know this is kind of an out there question, but im looking into buying an airport express and i was wondering if there was a way that the Airport express could connect to my existing wireless network (BT Home Hub) and share that internet connection over ethernet to my xbox 360.
My xbox is in another room and i cannot connect it to the router. I have been reading about WDS and client mode but it all goes over my head. can anyone explain if this is possible with the airport express even though i dont have an apple base station?
Im also wondering if Airtunes would work for my speaker system. Any help is appreciated!

    Welcome to the discussions!
"i was wondering if there was a way that the Airport express could connect to my existing wireless network (BT Home Hub) and share that internet connection over ethernet to my xbox 360."
Possibly. You would need to check to see if the BT Home Hub was compatible with what is called ProxySTA. Otherwise, the ethernet port on the Express will not function.
WDS would not be compatible with your BT. Even if it were, the wireless network bandwidth would be reduced by 50%. Not what you want for gaming.
Assuming your BT is a router with ethernet ports, you absolute best connection for any application, but especially gaming is an ethernet cable.
If this is not feasible, look at ethernet power line adapters. One adapter plugs into the AC socket at the router end and the other plugs into an AC socket near the 360. The adapters use the AC wiring in your home to transport the ethernet signal. This is almost as good as a straight ethernet cable and far better than wireless for gaming.
The Express would be able to join the wireless network of the BT router for use with AirTunes.

  • KEITH BEDDOE - WIRELESS ROUTER TO REPLACE HOME HUB...

Dear Keith - I am new to this site and don't normally subscribe to this type of thing and from reading the forum, you may be the man I need!
Have had my Home Hub 3 for a year now  (not on infinity) and have had enough. I have spent endless hours on phone to BT, switched channels, WPA/WPA2 etc - but this router just will not work consistently with all our devices. (If I take the devices to work, or anyone else's house who doesn't have Home Hub 3, they work fine), further, everything else worked fine on my old Home Hub 2 but the signal strength wasn't enough to make it round my house, thus I changed to Home Hub 3. The devices are all set up to Home Hub 3, but I constantly have to reset it because it keeps losing touch with devices. If I reset then everything is fine but then some devices (normally HP, Blackberry, Kindle and Nintendo DS) will start dropping signal.
I have now decided to invest in another wireless router, I have searched the forum but am unsure if any of the suggested products are suitable, so, can you suggest something?
I connect the router via the phone line (is this ADSL) and wireless everything. We have quite a large house, so it needs to cover a good range, and easy to set up because I am a complete novice at all this. These are the items we run on it (there's alot, we are a big family) .....
    IPhone x 3
    IPad x 1
    IPod x 1
    Blackberry Playbook x 1
    Blackberry Phone x 1
    Nintendo Wii x 1
    XBox x 1
    Nintendo DS x 2
    Kindle x 2
Netgear thing for Sky Anytime x 1 (sorry, can't remember what that gadget is called)
    HP Laptop x 1
    HP PC x 2
    HP Printer x 1
I just want a router that will sit prettily on the table and do it's stuff and that I don't have to keep resetting to get a signal from it....
Thanking you in advance for all your help....

As Bullitt says, there are quite a few choices, but  the TP-Link TD-W8960N 300MBPS Wireless N ADSL2+ Modem Router is a popular choice.
It does have external aerials, so coverage should be fairly good. Bear in mind that all wifi routers have the same power output, so router placement and aerial quality are important.
Things like PCs and gaming console are best connected using powerline adapters, and not wireless.

  • Lack of loopback on Home Hub 3 is making me consid...

The lack of loopback on Home Hub 3 is making me considering quitting BT Infinity. Why? Because as a software developer this is a giant paint in the **bleep**!
Every application I develop from home has to use local IP addresses, which means it keeps adding development time to my projects as I cannot use hostnames and have to keep writing go-arounds. It's a giant PITA!
I mean, sure, if you didn't support some wacky new technology that only 1% of people used then that'd be understandable but BT Infinity is FAST internet and people who pay £40 a month for FAST internet usually aren't the clueless old people you think they are!
I don't even like BT I think you lot are a bunch of crooks, but I don't live in a cabled area in my new house so I'm stuck with you. Considering moving to a friends FTTC service even if I do have to pay £20 extra a month.
So BT, pull your finger out of your god **bleep** **bleep**, hire some decent developers and fix your **bleep** because I and thousands of other customers are wound up by this. You're doing nothing to inspire loyalty. Nothing.

You do have the alternative of using your own router, there are plenty of cheap cable routers available.
If you only have one PC connected, then you can connect it directly to the modem, by setting up a PPPoE network connection type.

  • Regular disconnection from my Home Hub 2.0 on Infi...

For the last year I've been getting regularly disconnected on the wireless from my Home Hub 2.0 router on Infinity - and have to reset to get the connection back (this happens to all phones and laptops connected) - this is despite the blue lights remaining 'on' on the hub. It's now getting more and more frequent (5 times per day) - making skype calling a challenge. Also the line speed degrades and a reset brings this back up. I contacted the help line a few months ago but failed to fully resolve this. In my mind the home hub is faulty and I need a new one - but seems v difficult to get that to actually happen.
I'm on the verge of cancelling and going to another provider now I'm out of contract - any advice?

From the memory, (which is not very good at the best of times), the Home Hub 2 is not infinity compatible.  The router needs to be able to support PPoE on a WAN port.  The HH2 does not have a WAN port.
Other than that there are lots of threads on here re: unreliable wireless connections.  Too many to list all the definitive suggestions.  A search should help.
As to BT replacing the router, BT may replace it if it is deemed faulty within the warranty period.  If the router is over a year old it will be out of warranty and as it was purchased by you as part of the contract it will be your problem to sort out.
Many on here have replaced or not even used the supplied router.  As long as the replacement supports PPoE and has a WAN port, (i.e. Cable router), you should be OK.  There as also a growing number of routers that are VDSL capable so it may be a consideration to replace the modem as well.  With regards to router replacement this thread may be of interest.

  • Issues with Home Hub 3 Wireless. And lousy teleph...

I don't know if this forum is moderated or followed by BT support staff, but I sure hope so.
After coming from Virgn Media for my BB to BT infinity (Awesome speeds btw!) I'm pleased with the connection and, up until today, the support. I now have issues with my Wireless devices on the HH3.
This is the outline of my setup:
I have the Open reach modem connected to the home hub.  I then have the 1Gbps ethernet port from the home hub that is connected to a 1Gbps 5 Port switch that connects my wired network together (Consisting of my Xbox, Networked Printer and my Desktop PC).  Wireless serves 2 Laptops, an Xperia U phone, and a G5 Ipod touch (not all mine, I have a flat mate).
My issue is that when more than one device connects via WiFi, the WiFi network has serious issues: The connections don't drop per se, but websites are not delivered, data transfer is intermittant at best - i.e. the WiFi network simply does not work.  When there is only one device, there is no issue.
Now, being a techie (I don't mean to title drop, but I think it's important that technical support know that I know my stuff) I'm an electrical engineer (The graduate type) and I know my IT - so I have my own idea of what's wrong with this.
Now, as my order was not completed until yesterday, techincal support couldn't/wouldn't help until today.  Yesterday, however, I spent hours trying to solve my issues and got as far semi-solving the problem.  I managed to get everything working nicely together when Wireless N is disabled and only a/b/g is enabled.  Great, but a main selling point is the Wireless N and I want to use this.
So, today I phoned technical support.  I should also note here, and I made this perfectly clear with support, that when the WiFi starts to missbehave, the wired network still works perfectly and I have no issues with internet connectivity with any wired devices.  So, clearly this is not a line fault - it's on this side, aka, the router WiFi side where the problem resides.  Support decided to do a line test anyway - and of course it got the all clear.  He then asked me to reset the router (Yey, again after I had done it plenty of times before, only this time I had customised the SSID and the LAN IP addresses and now they need done again).  He then went on to state that I should receive an e-mail with instructions on what to do next, and if they are still issues to reply to a text message that will be sent.
Duly, an email arrived.  It began with "Sorry you had to call us today about your wireless disconnecting. We’re pleased we could help you get it working again." and continued on with with this theme.  No, my problem is not resolved!  I phoned back, this time advising me to change channels, and check individual devices to see if they're any conflicts - I did this pretty quickly and disabled and re-enabled WiFi on my Laptop, phone, ipod and still to no avail.
I have now been told that I will get a phone call between 3 and 3:30pm to see if the WiFi will settle down. huh!
I don't mean to be such a pain and sound like such a git, but this is not an issue that I believe the technical support (via the call centre anyway) will be able to solve.  This is an issue with the HH3, mine at least, not being able to handle mutiple WiFi devices conntected simualtaneously - all but one on N, the other on G.  Now, I'm of the understanding that this shouldn't be a problem.  I'm sick of telephone support going through their script without listening to the whole issue either or beleiving that I spent a good 2 hours yesterday getting to the bottom of this.  I don't need line tests, I don't need resetting the router, I don't need changing channels - I've did all this!
So it looks as though I'm stuck on HH3 in 'G' for now until we solve this issue.
Further information: I'm using the type A HH3; again wired devices are not impacted in any way from this issue; I have tried multiple different channels; YES! I've reset the router and power cycled it; And this issue happens wether my WiFi devices are 1 meter away from the HH3 or 15 meters away.
Could this be a bad HH3 or frimware issue? Can someone suggest something or highlight something that I've perhaps overlooked or missed?
