Testing in Forte: Good News :-)

Hi
The purpose of this message is to address some inaccuracies in the attached
message regarding testing tools. I thought I would share with you all what
I found out about testing tools that work with Forte.
I heard back from Forte users about two testing tools:
1) Mercury LoadRunner / WinRunner etc.
2) ClassIQ's product called IQTest
Mercury
I spoke with a Mercury representative today who listed for me several sites
which are successfully using Forte with Mercury (one of these sites is even
located here in Australia!). The problems described in the attached
message or accurate; however, the workarounds are documented and easy to
understand.
You can use Mercury today with Forte.
In addition, Mercury has been working for several months now on an even
tighter integration with Forte. This project has been extremely
successful. There is at least one Forte site in the USA which is using
this Forte/Mercury integrated product. According to the Mercury rep, the
Mercury/Forte tighter integration is now in beta testing and should be
production in May/June 1997. This information was verified by my contacts
at Forte HQ. If any of you need more detailed information than this please
contact me or your Mercury representative.
ClassIQ
ClassIQ currently has a small number of sites using its testing tools which
are written in Forte. Needless to say, ClassIQ is very tightly integrated
with the Forte environment. If you would like to know more about ClassIQ
contact Joe Burns at 105210,[email protected].
I am sure there are many other people using other testing tools with
Forte....these are just the two I have heard about in the initial responses
to my query. I would love to hear about other testing tools which work
well with Forte.

Eric

Hi,
We evaluated quite a few test tools in relation to the forte
environment. All of them have the same problem : The inability to
correctly map Forte widgets. Most of them cannot recognise
Outlinefields, ArrayFields etc. Even if they do recognise a forte widget
only basic properties like the size of the widget, its position on the
screen etc. are recorded. Data contents of the widget are not
recognized.
To clarify the above points : Given a screen with a TextData widget, you
can record and playback this sequence without any problems with most
Test tools :- Position the mouse on the widget, Type 'Testing' .
Ideally, the TextData widget should have a property 'Content' or 'Value'
(different test tools call it differently) which will have the value
'Testing'. In case of forte this does not happen. What is recorded are
the low level mouse movements or keyboard strokes. The position on the
screen where the value is typed is recorded and played back.
Low level recording maybe acceptable in some circumstances but say - you
have a widget which gets populated by a database query. How will you
test the values displayed ?
Some of the test tools are customizable i.e. you can actually create a
widget class of your own and try to map it to a recognized (by the Tool)
widget class. This will be a time consuming process with a great deal of
trial and error and no guarantees of success.
If the sole objective is navigate through screens and record and
playback, then most of the automated test tools work. If you want to
make full use of a test tools capabilities and want to go further and
intelligently record and playback, most test tools have very very
limited use.
Discussions with Test tool vendors have revealed the following :
- Forte has not released a Test API to any particular vendor or the
market at large
- Forte implementation sites are at the moment too few for any test tool
vendor to invest in Research and Development and come out with a Test
API.
So as it goes the chances of a fully compatible Forte test tool in the
near future are remote.
Forte's own AutoTester project has a limited usage. My own evaluation is
that it cannot be used for big sized implementations. Along with other
limitations, test management facilities that are particularly relevant
for big sized implementations simply don't exist with AutoTester.
The only product in the market that is Forte specific and is more a
testing Framework than a tool is TestIQ from ClassIQ. I am keen to get
information about TestIQ from any of its implementation sites. Again I
am not sure about its test management capabilities.
Hope the information helps,

Subject: Development tools
Hi all,
We are about to embark on a sizable Forte development and are interested
in hearing from anybody who has successfully used automated test tools
with Forte. Also, does anybody know of a problem tracking tool that can
be linked to the Forte source repository for the purpose of tracking the
status software bugs, fixes etc.
Thanks,

Subject: Automated test tools
I've read about Capture/Replay and played with the AutoTester project a
little. I'm curious as to the experiences that developers have had with
using these tools to automate testing of GUI applications. Has anyone
actually deployed an application that successfully uses these tools? How
does it compare against other automated test tools?
One limitation that I see with using Capture/Replay is that any non-Forte
client interfacing with my Forte code would not be able to use this
mechanism to perform its auto testing. Also, while playing with the
AutoTester I actually got a playback which was slightly different than what
I did while doing the capture.
Thanks,
Jim Hancock

  • Automated Testing of Forte Applications

    Dear Jim,
This is a technical and education Forum and I want to make sure everyone is
"educated" to your options out there. Our company specific purposes is
delivering testing solutions for Forte Developed applications. (Primary
responsibility is to help developers and qa staff) I have tried to answer
you questions as follows and to educate fellow Forte people on solutions
available to them. If you need more discussion about our tools, please
    contact me directly.
To anyone interested in testing Forte Applications:
    1) What product are developers using to automate the process of testing
    Forte applications?
IQTest- Unit Level Testing Tool that tests specific Forte methods and
saves them for automatic regression testing.
IQTrace: Unit Level Pathway Testing. Tests specific method level and
functional threads and saves them for automatic regression testing.
    2) If there is a tool, how long does it take to create a typical test?
    - Class I.Q. automatically generate the test classes and instantiates the
object under test. A typical setup for a developer is about 30 minutes
which is done once. The actual process of testing methods or traces takes
seconds. All tests are saved to any Forte database for automatic
    regression testings.
    3) Can the test include the testing of persistance to a database?
Yes, Our products are written to test persistance in a database and all
fully supported to test service objects which is currently a major issue
that most development teams are running into problems with.
    4) What type of testing can be performed: black box testing, white box
testing, integration testing, UI testing, etc.?
Class I.Q. is considered a "White Box" approach to testing. It is
exercising the source code and creating an output for each method call.
The test cases then are dynamically linked into a trace.
Some of the features of Class I.Q. Products:
    - Automatic Test Class Generation
    - Saving of Test Cases and Test Traces
    - Groups A queue for Different Testing Responsibilities
    - Linking to Any Forte Supported Test Configuration Product
    Thank you,
Any additional questions please call or email me directly.

  • GOOD NEWS FOR THE NANO!!!

"They claim current iPods can already play video (but this is disabled) — which means an updated firmware might enable movie playback, something not infeasible given the power of the iPod hardware platform."
http://engadget.com/page/3 -- scroll down to "Think Secret thinks we'll see a video iPod Tomorrow" and read the update!!
This is good news for all those who may be regreting buying the nano. (I don't, it's flash-newer technology, hard drive skips)

    Yeah,
Even though the screen on the Nano is small, I would still welcome video playback. I don't think copying full DVD's onto the Nano is practical given the storage size unless there is a way to compress video/DVD content to be loaded on to the Nano. You would be able to hold maybe 1 or 2 full DVD movies plus your music library. The new video iPod and regular iPods have much larger storage for things like full quality audio and video.
I welcome the ability to play Quick Time content, though.
Have a lot of video/movies in QT format and the sound would probably be great over headphones.
I do not regret buying a Nano, though. The Nano is an impressive piece of technology and still a good-looking device for playing any audio/video/image content.
I hope apple does release a firmware updater to recent iPods for video playback.
This would just make the Nano even more slicker device.

  • At last some good news for UK iPhone users

After the UK users seemingly getting a raw deal from from Apple as of late (no Atv price drop or movies etc), a report on Pocket lint informs us that our tariffs will be moving into line with their non iPhone tariffs in Feb. below is a copy but for more info check it out.
The three current tariffs for iPhone will be brought in line with the minute and text bundles offered on the new tariff structure.
iPhone customers on a £35 per month contract will get three times more minutes and more than double the number of texts than before.
The new £45 iPhone tariff gives the same amount of minutes and texts as the former £55 tariff so customers who were on the £55 tariff can either save £10 per month or take the new £75 tariff with 3000 minutes and 500 texts a month.
All iPhone customers will continue to receive "unlimited" data browsing and access to The Cloud's Wi-Fi hotspots.
    Roll on Feb

This is indeed good news! Well done O2!
This is from the O2 iPhone 'Pay Monthly consumer airtime contract for iPhone (November 2007)'
5.15 You may move to another iPhone tariff at any time, provided that you may only change tariffs a maximum of once per month. Changing tariffs will not affect your Minimum Period. You will not be able to move to a general O2 Pay Monthly tariff. Where you have notified us you wish to move to an alternative iPhone tariff, unless we advise otherwise, your new tariff will commence at the start of your next billing cycle.
I hope to move from the old £45 > new £35 Tariff (£120 a year saving).
Would be good to hear of any experiences from other UK iPhone users attempting to do this or similar.

  • DiskWarrior 3.0.3 and QT 7.1 good news

Good news. DiskWarrior no longer crashes on exit after installing QT 7.1.
QT 7.0.4 would cause DiskWarrior 3.0.3 to crash after performing repairs.

QT 7.1 does NOT fix the crash on exit from DiskWarrior 3.0.3
Turns out I had forgotten that I renamed the sound file in the app package that fixed it for QT 7.0.4.

  • Some GOOD news at last !!!!

Hey guys...aftert all that frustration and trying to make iTunes 7.6 work and no luck I downgraded back to 7.4.3...and after downgrading I noticed a tip that I missed earlier saying to check if I have Smart Card installed...I didn't have it...and after installing it, the error ''drivers are missing or corrupted, iTunes might not be able to communicate wiht iPod'' DISAPPEARED !!! And I can acces the iTunes store faster than ever !!! I'm happy, but I don't have the guts to try and instal the latest version of iTunes again...I'll stay at this version until Apple discovers the actual problem...

  • Big Thanks to Apple Care! Good News Post

99% of the post here are people with problems so i thought I would post some good news. Last week my iPhone got the White Screen of Death!!! I called the 1-800 number. I was told I get a new one mailed to me for $29 or I could go get one at a local Mac Store (that was over 2 hours away) I decided to travel to the store in Atlanta. 2 hours on Saturday. Got back with the new phone and guess what. The WiFi doesn't work!! My wife's phone and daughter's touch finds wifi easy but my new phone, NOTHING!!! I called today and was upset and told them I could NOT drive 2 hours again and can't see why I should pay $29 for a shipping when THEY give me a BROKE phone! They waved the free, sending me a new phone again over night!! They were VERY easy to talk and deal with! I thought for sure I would have the fight for the fee to be waved. They did place a credit hold on my credit card but that is just to make sure I send my phone back. So a BIG thanks to Apple Care!

Well, LukeD , that's one of the nicest pieces of feedback, I've seen on these boards!
Many thanks for the kind words. Such things matter far more to each of us, I suspect, than any acknowledgment or not from Apple!
And there are plenty of others who contribute here greatly (too numerous to name) , too, of course and make it a place worth coming back to for us all.
    Cheers

  • Good News Bad News and Loop question

The good news is AP3 seems to be working great since I've cleared ALL cashes and started, re-started in safe mode.
My one remaining problem is with the loop. It seems the more changes I make to my image the longer it takes the loop to kick-in. If no changes the loop magnifies in an instant but after adjusting wb,exposure, enhance, sharpen and highlights & shadows the loop may take up to 10 seconds or longer to kick-in to focus.
Anyone have a cure for this?
    Thanks,
    BobM

  • Miss the XP network icon in the system tray? Good news!

I don't know about you but since switching to Windows 7, I really miss not being able to monitor network traffic in the system tray?  In fact, the feature first went MIA in Vista.
Well good news!  I came across this little gem today and thought others might be interested in it.  Igor Tolmachev of itsamples.com has developed a nifty Network Activity Indicator, which adds the Windows XP-style Network connection icon to the system tray.

Right, but the original question was not, "do you think a mute status indicator on the screen would be useful". The question was whether there would be some way to implement one.
In any case, what you seem to be overlooking is that there would be a lot of people who MIGHT need to be reminded of the mute status, PASSIVELY. Its a different cognitive operation, where the device takes the lead and reminds ME of its status, on-screen, (just as I look at it for other status indications, such as new email in inbox).. without me having to remember to think of the mute status question unprompted. I find it totally illogical that Apple left this out. It could be in the bar at the top with the other status indicators SO EASILY.

  • 10.5.7 good news update

Apple have also fixed disconnecting Bluetooth mouse and also the Mighty mouse is actually useable, no jumping around or stuttering or disconnection's. Still have to use MZoom to set a useful tracking speed though!
Been using my BT mouse and keyboard for a few hours now and no disconnection's either!!!
I think this is new but when I used to right click on the Mail icon in the dock and composed a new email. Not only would the new email appear but the main Mail window, now in 10.5.7 only the new mail window appears. This has been bugging me for a long time and now its fixed.
Its all good news for me with 10.5.7
Now do I get a Mac Mini for an admin machine at work or a Ubuntu box with a quad core CPU. still doing research on that!!

    Hi,
With mail running you can right-click or ctrl-click its dock icon and choose compose a new email from the menu.
In the past the main Mail window would also open as well as the new email, which was not useful.
Now only the new email window is displayed on the screen.

I got it working completely (including tasks). Here's how I did it:
    - I first ran SyncClean in Support/PocketMacSyncManager/Additional Tools. You need to click both "Clean SyncServices Files" and "Clean PocketMac Files."
    - I did a uninstall using an app called AppDelete (http://reggie.ashworth.googlepages.com/appdelete) to nuke it. This apparently cleans up everything on the Mac side.
    - I then used the DataPurge UI to nuke the tasks (after doing another backup of course) as it was hanging on tasks.
    - I then did a reinstall.
After doing all of that, It now works. I'm not sure why this works, but it does so that's all I care about.

Way better than the old Cannon Software as you don't need Photoshop or anything, Its a stand alone program and Its actually pretty robust and automatic as well.
