The audio on my 1st gen iPad is sporadic -- can't trust alarms and sometimesdownkoaded iTunes won't play.  What's going on?

My 1st generation IPad's audio is sporadic.  Can't trust alarms and sometimes downloaded iTunes will advance but nothing can be heard.  And yes, I have checked to be sure the audio Is turned on and the volume up high.  Can anyone help me?  Please don't tell me it's a hardware issue. . . .

I tried to install it, but now a little window pops up that says "The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory C:Program Files\Quick Time\QTSystem\Quick Time.Resources.en.lproj. The installation cannot continue. Log on as an administrator or contact your system administrator".
Although those messages do sometimes indicate a folder permissions problem, they can also be caused by disk damage. So let's try running a chkdsk over your C drive first.
See the following Microsoft document for instructions and a "Guided Help":

Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, reboot the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly now?
