The saga of the lost 250 gig drive!

Solaris Express Developer 5/07 5.11 x86 install Asus P5RD2-VM Seagate drives:
Disks c1d0 c2d0 Solaris configures via installer c1d0(boot) allowed to use entire drive.
Disk two c2d0 is already configured with Bootloader (/dev/sda) sda1 60 gig ext3 (Ubuntu) sda2 1 gig swap remainder sda3 fat32 for joint access.
Solaris Management Console states the disk (c1d0) it set up fails to have a Solaris partition and wants to fdisk it. Hmm problem? Secondly despite extensive testing I can't mount (sda3) for access.
The attempts: mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c2d0s2 /mnt/aux i've tried scsi c2t0d0s2 also with partition 0-9 to no avail. However plug in my usb 250 and it mounts with no problem.
I have installed Solaris numerous times and even wiped both drives and put Solaris on the small drive.
I always get the same balk from 'SMC' stating a non Solaris fdisk that it setup. Attempting to identify the correct partition via dd if=drive bs=512 count=1 of=find_that_#!&* still left me out in the cold looking for a solution. Windows, Ubuntu, Mandrake and Dsl can all see the drives with no problem.
The oddest thing of the whole ridiculous episode is when I re-installed the last time Solaris added a grub line for Windows for the disk partition it refuses to mount.
Gparted Solaris where are you?
Any ideas greatly appreciated. I should note the re-installs are simply an attempt to resolve inability to access the fat32 partition, Solaris itself is stable and just as healthy as it can be.

  • 250 GIG drive formats to only 233 GIGs. Is this normal?

    Hello,
I have read that when you format a drive the file system takes some of the space on this disk. I just formatted a new 250 Hitachi T7K250 SATA drive and it formats to 232.67 GIGs. Does this sound right? I thought it might result in about 240 GIGs but it seems to me I am loosing some disk space somewhere. Or is this normal? I thought I would write this post just to confirm that this is normal hard drive formatting behaviour.
I formatted the disk with Tiger's Disk Utility and I chose the "write zeros" option.
I have also read that there may appear to be lost space on the drive due to the various ways Gigabytes are measured.
Is 233 Gigs a normal formatted amount for a 250 Gig drive?
    Thanks.

Not exactly. Can you express it in powers of 1024?
Yes. Inherently, however, it's all powers of 2.
That's right but you are not using the the powers 2^x, (x not equal
10,20,30,...), so effectively you are using base 1024.
    2^10 equals 1024^1, which is 1 kilobyte.
    2^20 equals 1024^2, which is 1 megabyte.
    2^30 equals 1024^3, which is 1 gigabyte.
Exactly and only powers of 1024 have a name. So when it comes to drive sizes only powers of 1024 are relevent.
    So actually you are using
    1024^1 = 2^10 (kilo)
    1024^2 = 2^20 (mega)
    1024^3 = 2^30 (giga)
So, drive sizes are specified as powers of 2, which
can also be expressed as powers of 1024 (but computer
scientists never talk about powers of 1024, they talk
    about powers of 2).
Yes but sometimes if makes sense to talk in powers of 16 (hexadecimal) and
powers of 1024. It used mainly because it can be expressed as a power of two, but still the base remains 16 or 1024.

  • The saga of the hanging eMac Please help

I'm working on this long distance, so I have to be long winded. I recently sold an emac 1 ghz with 1 gig ram, 80 gig hdd and a new install of Tiger on that drive. I had been running it with Tiger on an external drive and 10.2.8 on the 80.
Before it went out the door it got a clean bill of health from the local Mac reseller. Upon arrival it started acting up with this hanging issue constantly when he goes to shut it down. Occasionally when he tries to wake it from sleep it also does that. I had none of these issues during the time it was here so needless to say I feel pretty bad that I sold it to my brother and he's having this problem now. His frustration level is quite high as he's a new Mac user and so he's not feeling the love if you can catch my meaning.
There's 58 gigs used and I wonder could that be the issue? Or could the drive just be failing? I have just found the bad cap thread and wonder if it might be that too? Can anyone offer any more thoughts on this? I've told him to take the thing into the shop near where he lives and I'll pay the service call. If it's too much I'll tell him to send it to that place in Thailand (Phuket) and give him back his money.
    Regards
    Mike

What external peripherals does does brother have connected to the eMac? In particular, does he have a scanner or all-in-one printer/scanner/copier attached? Wat about an external hard drive with bundled backup software triggered by a button on the hard drive case (this last is a stretch for a new user). Most scanner/all-in-one devices have software that triggers a scan when a button on the peripheral is pressed. The button is detected by a process running in the background that continually scans for the button being pressed. That setup is a known source of problems, both in random freezing or crashing and in shutdown/sleep, essentially beacise the process doesn't quit as it should.
A quick test is to disconnect all peripherals other than keyboard and mouse and Start Up in Safe Mode. It's also possible to open Applications -> Utilities -> Console and view various logs (system, console, Crash Reporter, ones for any scanner/printer/all-in-one, etc.) to look for any reports of applications hanging, but I can tell you from experience that trying to talk a relative through reading console logs remotely is a non-trivial task (and trying to talk them trough setting up Vine Server so that you can use Vine Viewer or Chicken of the VNC is no better).
Two easier things to have your brother try, assuming that he did add a scanner/printer/all-in-one: first, check the version number of the device software (it should be on the install disc if it's not readily found in whatever software was with the drivers on the install disc) and compare to the version on the manufacturer's website. I personally have never seen a printer or all-in-one that didn't have more recent drivers online than in the box. Download and install any available updates for the OS X version on the eMac.
Also, launch Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions on the hard drive. This should be done any time any third-party software asks for an administrator password as part of the install. If the third-party installer messed up system file permissions (and Canon and HP are especially likely to do so), repairing permissions can fix things quite well.
Also, for a Mac OS X with sleep problems (file names and locations are for 10.4.x):
    -- trash /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    -- trash /Users/[username]/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
    -- reboot while resetting NVRAM
(For eMacs that boot into OS 9, refer to Computer Will Not Wake From Sleep)

  • Poor service and the saga of the Home Hub 2.0

Since upgrading to Total broadband 3 earlier this year, I've had problems with the Home Hub 2.0 (type a).  It keeps locking up/crashing.  Its the home hub rather than the broadband connection, which when used with a Linksys modem router works fine.
I've run through usual fault finding and rectification - hard reset, plugging into test socket, countless line tests.  of course trying to get BT call centre staff to understand its the home hub thats playing up/at fault, not the connection, is like banging ones head against a very hard wall.  For a piece of equipment less than a year old it should work without problem.  And I was tempted to go to PC world and buy a replacement modem, but decided to preserve with  BT's 'help' desk.
Over the past 3 or 4 months I've probably made one help desk call about the same issue each month.  Have to repeat myself time and time again and get fobbed off with another excuse, or promise of call back.
Eventually got through to a supervisor - after insisting when a call log was closed and marked 'resolved' when we were still having the problems and hadn't had a call back.  Repeated my issues for the 4th or so time, went through what I had done to date (restore to factory settings, checking its logs, etc etc)  he finally consented to send a replacement home hub.
I get an email telling me it would be delivered on the 6th before 6pm.  But of course it wasn't.  And I did as the email said, and tried to phone the number to say it hadn't arrived only to get an answer phone message saying the help desk was shut.
So wasted my lunch break today on the phone to BT trying to find out where it was, only to learn that BT had posted it to a previous address which I haven't lived at for 4 years.  Well done BT, it takes real skill to be that rubbish.
Fingers crossed another new one is on its way to the right address.
I have however a couple of questions, which as I can't face phoning the call centre again I thought I'd post on here:
    1) How on earth did BT manage to send  the replacement home hub it to the wrong address?  Especially since the original one was sent to the correct address & my delivery address is set  correctly on the web portal and the agent handling the call confirmed the address? - and what are you going to do to ensure it doesn't happen again (dare I mention data protection - as the home hub pack presumably has some personal details on it..)
    2) In the final call today I was asked for my date of birth and mothers maiden name so they could add it to the account - afterwards having not been asked by BT for this before on countless calls  I wondered is this standard practice - or should I now be worried?
    3) How do you have a sensible discussion with someone - preferably in the UK - about the customer experience?  As mine as has been rubbish (you might be able to tell from the tone of this post), and I'm regretting ever having upgraded and wishing I had instead gone to another broadband provider.
    4) Given that issues with certain models of home hubs seem to be known issues (at least to google) why do the call centre agents always focus on the broadband connection -(typical conversation with an  Agent "..so your connection keeps dropping", Me: "No the connection is fine.  The home hub has crashed again". Agent "So your connection has dropped"? and on and on) rather than actually listening to the customer. (Can you reset it - yes already have, several times  and so on)
Any answers from a moderator would be welcome.
I am actually happy with BT's  broadband product, and don't want to have to go through the hassle of changing provider, I'm just disgruntled at how bad the home hub has been, and how poor the customer service has been.
    Thanks.

    Hi EKandrew,
To be honest I have not heard of the hub locking up before.  The questions you have been asked by our helpdesk are aimed specifically at your connection as most problems tend to occur here, either with slow speed or hub drops etc.
Could you be more specific in how the hub locks/crashes? What do you notice when this happens? What way do you have your connection set up?
As much info as possible would help
    In answer to your questions:
1/ Sometimes we have an old address still on your account and this has not been updated for packages/correspondance.
2/ Nothing to worry about, we ask these questions for additional security.  If you have quoted your account number previously this is normally enough for most things however the advisor probably just noticed we didnt have this info on file.
4/ As above, this is not a common problem and most issues that come to us are to do with your connection.
    Thx

  • 250 gig detection problem

Does anyone know if the msi 845e max2 mobo is compatible with the MaXLine Plus II 250 gig drive? i have just bought one and cannot get it to be detected in windows xp pro correctlyi have the latest bios update for the board.
    anyone have any ideas?

To double confirm if LBA is being enabled in your BIOS, you can always access your BIOS and check under your standard CMOS setup and check your HDDs status and see if LBA is On.

  • OK HERE IS WHERE I AM AT HARD DRIVE WENT DOWN UPGRADED TO A 250 GIG AND NOW NEED TO KNOW HOW TO INSTALL OSX ON THE POWERBOOK G4 17

I have a powerbook g4 17 and it recently went down the hard drive sounded like it was eating itself so i replaced the hard drive with a 250 gig and now i need help on how to get osx onto the powerbook it will not boot from disk i will start all the back at 0s9 if need be can anyone please help me i miss my g4

Do you have any OSX disks?
It won't boot from the new hard drive yet because there is no OS installed.
You need to use an OSX disk, put in your mac, then when turn on, hold down the C key (to boot from the CD).
Hold it down for a long time until you hear it noisily reading from the CD drive.  Once OSX starts up (from CD) you should go to Disk utility and you will need to format your new hard drive.
Once formatted, you can then install OSX.
Everything is done from the OSX install disk.
If you don't have one, you can buy a retail copy from Apple (not Snow Leopard), or from Ebay.  Make sure it is a retail copy, not disks that came with a Mac as they only work with the exact model of Mac it came with.

  • Hello, Trying to run Bootcamp on my 15" Macbook Pro (Maverick).60 gig available on my computer's hard drive and 250 gig on a separate hard drive that I have attached which is single partitioned. Keeps saying "The startup disk does not have enough space"

    Hello,
I'm trying to run Bootcamp on my 15" Macbook Pro (Maverick). I have 60 gig available on my computer's hard drive and have 250 gig on a separate hard drive that I have attached, which is single partitioned (MS-DOS FAT). It keeps saying "The startup disk does not have enough space, you must have 28 gig of free space available" Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the advice Bob The Fisherman. I'm just reading what turbostar has kindly written and it appears that perhaps, if I take advice from you both, I need to free more space up on the computer's hard drive?
With the external hard drive; would it be advisable to defragment? Know of any defrag freeware for Mac OSX?
    Many thanks to you both.

  • I lost my hard drive, have a new one now, I should still have access to the media I bought from the iTunes store, right?

    but how?

You can re-download apps but not music.  If you still have the old drive then put it in an enclosure to see if you can recover files using recovery software.
    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location.  OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone.  Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.

  • My computer crashed and I lost my hard drive. I have downloaded the itunes to my new pc.  How do I sync my Iphone without loosing everything??

My computer crashed and I lost my hard drive.  I have downloaded the Itunes on my new computer.   I am afraid to sync my I phone as I don't want to loose everything on it and my I Tunes is blank - not what I had previously. ????  Can someone advise?

Prevent automatic syncing one time, without changing settings:  Open iTunes. Then, as you connect iPhone to your computer, press and hold Shift-Control (on a PC) until you see iPhone appear in the sidebar. Then, use iTunes File menu > Transfer Purchases from XXX's iPhone.  This will transfer your purchased items.
For your other stuff you will need a 3rd party utility.  Find  discussion of them here
Unlike music and video purchases, iTunes Store Apps can be downloaded again without charge.  This explains how: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519

  • I lost my hard drive contents and itunes wasn't backed up. Can I recover the library from my iPad?

I lost my hard drive contents and itunes wasn't backed up. Can I recover the library from my iPad?

You won't be able to recover you entire library from your iPad but you can recover some of its contents by transferring the purchases back to iTunes. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 This will not transfer anything you did not purchase from iTunes, for example music or video files you had stored on the HD and you put into iTunes. Without a backup that information is gone. One very important thing to keep in mind. Once you sync the iPad to the new iTunes it will remove all the afore mentioned music or video files from the iPad. Do not sync with iTunes if you want to keep those files. Hope that helps.
