The Zombie Numeric Keypad

I have removed the batteries from my Bluetooth numeric keypad. When I check the Bluetooth window in Systems Preferences, it still shows the keypad as being connected (see snapshot below). How could this possibly be?
Cheers
John

By numeric keypad, I assume that you're referring to the phone dialing pad. If so, no you cannot input text using the numeric keypad.

  • TS3048 What about the Wireless Numeric Keypad??

I just can't get it to connect (2011 iMac, 10.8.4, 2.9 GHz i5). Green light is on (& flashes), but Bluetooth can't find it in Setup Assistant.  I've read somewhere about entering a code once connected; I have no idea what code.  I've got the serial number (underneath), but I don't remember any code in the box it came in.  Do I have to be connected first??  Is there a software or firmware update I'm missing?  I'm caught up on all my updates.
    Stumped.

try changing the batteries in the keyboard, if it still doesn't connect you may have to connect a USB keyboard to finish the setup so you can get to the bluetooth settings in the system preferences.
can also try shutting down and doing SMC reset, the following article tells how to do this:

  • Numeric keypad locked on

I have a problem like this with my Powerbook G4 17 - it's a system which was upgraded from a Pismo to a Powerbook G4 17, with software strarting from 10.0 and upgraded through Leopard.
The problem is the first Powerbooks supported the embedded numeric keypad, and now that there is no more support for the numeric keypad, but my Powerbook G4 doesn't know that.
The keyboard acts like the numeric keypad is engaged, and I don't know how to turn it off.
When I first got my MacBook Pro 17 (early 2008) and transferred software with the Apple migration tool (via firewire) I had this symptom but the guy at the Genius Bar at the Apple Store went in to Preferences and disabled something in the Universal Access Control Panel, but I don't remember what.
Now that my Powerbook G4 17 is experiencing the same symptom, I don't know what to turn off.
Note that this doesn't happen when I Screen Share or VNC into the Powerbook.

    Sorry for the long delay.
Actually, I did - duhh - finally actually take a look at my Powerbook G4 and found that it did indeed support the embedded numeric keyboard, and I could turn it off the proper key.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

  • Disable embedded numeric keypad?

    Hello knowledgeable Mac folks,
Somehow, my father has been managing to repeatedly and unintentionally activate the embedded numeric keypad in his iBook keyboard (the numbers below the letters M, J, K, L, U, and I) as he types. (This has been happening in a number of applications: Word, Firefox, etc.)
My assumption is that he is somehow accidentally hitting certain keys that activate this as he types, but I thought I would check in with the experts. Could this be an indication of a larger issue, or is it likely that he's just unknowingly activating it as he types?
If the latter, what would be the keys that would activate this? How would he deactivate it when he does accidentally activate it? And even more, is there any way to disable this embedded numeric keypad so that he couldn't accidentally activate it at all?
I've been looking around for answers and haven't found anything. Thanks for any help you can offer!
    Best,
    Emily

    Hi Ronda,
    I believe he's using 10.3.9.
There haven't been any other major issues -- this is the only one. Usually he uses it on a table, and over the summer he's been actually using it on his lap, so I suspect he's just setting it off accidentally as he types . . .
However, when this is happening, the green num lock light does not come on, which is what made me wonder if there was something else going on.
    Thanks for your help!

  • My numeric keypad isn't working, any suggestions?

I bought the additional numeric keypad when I bought my iMac and all of sudden, it has stopped responding.  I have changed the batteries, I have reset it, I have powered it off and on, disconnected the entire keyboard, I am out of ideas.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Reset the SMC and PRAM, instructions can be found by clicking Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets. Do each reset 3x in succession, sometimes they don't work the first time.

It works for me on 10g but the only pitfall is the " * ", the workaround is to use the " & " in the label next to the key you want.
    for example:
    Button*   label &*
    Button-   label   &-
    Button/   label   &/
    Button+   label   &+
    Button.   label   &.Try it

  • Numeric keypad emulator for MacBook Pro?

I've noticed that the state of the Fn key can be read in software, rather than just being a hardware-level modifier key. How do I know this? There's the Keyboard Viewer and StickyKeys, which both treat Fn just like other modifier keys.
Anyways, you know how the new MacBook Pros don't have the embedded numeric keypad? Well what I'm wondering is if there's some software to bring this back. You know, it can intercept keyboard messages and, if a key that would normally be part of the embedded keypad is pressed, check whether or not Fn is held down. If not, it will type the normal character. If so, it will type the number. Certain programs require the numeric keypad, or are at least much more usable with it (Blender, anyone?) and it would be really nice to have something like this. Thanks!

You can install the KeyRemap4MacBook PrefPane:
    http://www.pqrs.org/tekezo/macosx/keyremap4macbook/
...and remap the fn-key to fn-key-with-numlock, where fn-key-with-numlock enables the "missing" embedded numeric keypad on the newer MBPs.
@Tuttle - how does that help the OP? There are USB and Bluetooth numeric keypads everywhere (I've even seen them in gas station convenience stores!). There's even 'an app for that', if you have an iPhone/iPod Touch. But, the OP is asking about the embedded numeric keypad which is present on older MBPs (like mine) but was dropped with the Early 2008 models.

  • Numeric keypad locked Mavericks on Mac Mini Older Wired Keyboard

Using Mac mini on mavericks and I can't unlock or get the extended numeric keypad to work
I have tried two different wired USB old style apple keyboards and the extended numeric keypad won't work using either keyboard
I've tried pressing the Num Lock key and holding it down
Something I don't know? Please help

If you can't get this sorted out, why not just buy a new $12 Logitech usb optical mouse from Walmart, which will have left and right mouse buttons.
Control+click is the same thing as clicking with the right mouse button on a two-button mouse. Problem solved.
BTW I use these inexpensive Logitech mice on all the Minis I set up.

  • Numeric Keypad option on Wireless Keyboard

I use the faux Numeric Keypad setup on my MacBook Pro (fn key + select keys on the right side of the keyboard) to enter music in Sibelius. I'd like to do the same with my BTW Aluminum Keyboard - but the equivalent key strokes don't engage the "numeric pad" setup. Is there any way to do this or is it just not an option?

The laptops my employer provides (probook 6550b & elitebook 8560's) have numeric keypads. What I dislike about the keyboards with them is how off-center the keyboard, track pad and touch pad are. Haveing the keybpard centered is much better for true mobile work. A number pad sounds nice, and If I were an accountant, CPA or someone that works with numbers a great deal, it coul dbe a desireable feature. (or get an external number pad if that important.) Overll, I like the placement of lenovo's keyboard and other keys much better than what HP has done.

  • Multiclip Bug with MacBook Pro Numeric Keypad?

I'm having the issues with FCP 5.1.4 using a MacBook Pro with both Targus and a Adesso numeric keypads. Although the Targus is not listed as such, the Adesso is advertised as being OSX compatible. But regardless of which numeric keypad I use, regardless of which keyboard layout I use, regardless of which modifiers I use or map, I am completely unable to make cuts using modifier keys with either of the numeric keypads listed. Blue markers show up, but then the cuts are not made. I can switch video angles without modifier keys. I simply cannot cut to a video angle with a modifier key. HOWEVER...if I map the unmodified numeric keypad 1 and 2 to cut to a video angle, then ALL modifier keys (Shift, Opt, Ctl, and Cmd) will also now do the same.
The numeric keypads work in other apps, and seem to even work within the alphanumeric fields in FCP. It's the modifier keys that simply won't work correctly with multiclip editing.
This is a 2 camera project project that was shot WITHOUT matching timecode and was subclipped to keep everything in sync. Playback is fine in multiclip mode, and the multiclip buttons in the timeline button bar do work without problems. In fact this may be the only way I'll get this project done, which is a real pain.
Thanks for any and all help.

The only two options is to force quit out of the application, but this will NOT correct the problem when you restart iPhoto. I was only able to regain access to the top left library window when I unplugged the external display. This allowed me to regain control by shifting the iPhoto Library window back to the Macbook Pro screen. Once again I've never had these issues until upgrading to 10.10.2. My workspace set up has been the same since 2011.
That was bit drastic, to exit Full Screen Mode this way.
The green button is the new way to use iPhoto in Full Screen mode in 10.10.2.  To exit FullScreen Mode, either use the escape button, or "Exit Full Screen ^⌘F" from the View menu.  The main application menu will appear, when you move the cursor to the upper border of the screen.
If you Force Quit, iPhoto will stay in Full Screen Mode, when you restart it.

  • No Numeric Keypad on New MacBook Pro...How do you RAM preview?!?!?

Title says it all. My old PowerBook G4 had the keypad accessible with the "fn" key. I just realized my brand new MacBook Pro, doesn't. How in the world do you access the vital preview controls, such as RAM and audio preview?
    Please help!
    Thanks.

^Unfortunately, not any more. As I mentioned above, Apple have removed Numpad functions from the current release of MacBook Pros (released February 26 2008). I have a 17" MacBook Pro that is about 8 weeks old, and can verify this is the case. No Numpad toggle. The Numpad variants are no longer printed on the keys because the Fn key no longer provides that functionality.
This issue is being complained about all over DigiDesign and Apple's forums and The Cow. Strangely, a few of the Fn-key variants still work: Fn-Return=Enter, Fn-Arrow keys = PgUp/PgDn/Home/End. But you cannot create Numpad entries using the Fn key.
This is confirmed on the "switch To A Mac" website:

  • Number lock - ThinkPad USB keyboard and USB numeric keypad- they're not independent

Because Lenovo has discontinued my favorite keyboard ever, the USB ThinkPad with Ultra Nav full size keyboard with number pad, I bought a keyboard and numeric pad separately. I ended up with the 55Y9003 ThinkPad USB Keyboard with Track Point and the 33L3225 numeric keypad. That gives me the full solution, a good keyboard with a numeric keypad. Well, almost.
The issue I'm having is that the number lock on the main keyboard (turns the "uio", "jkl" and other keys into a number pad) controls the number lock on the separate keypad, and vice versa. What I want is for the numeric keypad to always be set for numbers and my main keyboard to always be set for letters. Instead, what I have is both are set for numbers or not, together. This of course defeats the main point of having a separate keypad for the numbers.
Is there a setting somewhere to fix this? I'm running Windows XP Professional on an HP Compaq desktop computer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

I have the same problem. Would be interested to hear of any solutions as well.

  • Engaging the Numeric Keypad

Hi, would someone please tell me how to engage the numeric keypad when running Quicken in Windows on an iMac? Thanks.

Does the keypad work properly in other places?
If not, press the Option key 5 times. You should then hear a short series of clicks, and it should work properly. See System Preferences > Universal Access > Mouse for details.

  • Introduce a keyboard with built in numeric keypad option on the W500 Lenovo!!

Ok, so this is not so much of a question as suggestion to Lenovo and call for any who think its a good idea to ad your support in appealing to Lenovo to offer it.
There are a number of competitors out there who make 15.x inch laptops and provide a numeric keypad on the keyboard. I do a lot of entering of numbers (and I suspect do a significant proportion of other potential W500 buyers) and not having a numeric keypad is a real limitation. Separate USB keypads don't really fix the problem because they don't offer the convenience and ergonomics of having it on the keyboard. Given the fact that it is aimed at true power users who can justify its cost, it should also offer the option of the keypad. I know this would mean a redesign but I believe there is enough room there (there may need to be some resizing of the current keys to fit it in but for those who crunch a lot of number its would be worth it. Given that many of the competitors who offer less capable machines can successfully fit the numeric keypad on a 15 inch machine then Lenovo should be able to do it without stuffing up the integrity/userbility if the current keyboard.
    Anyone agree?
