Thermocouple extension wire compensation
I am trying to set up a system level calibration procedure for my data system which validates an end tolerance for accuracy. This becomes problematic when I start getting into the thermocouple channels. When you connect the mV calibrator to the thermocouple wire, it creates two thermal junctions which are not compensated for. Thermocouple simulators can asses some of this, but they do not meet the accuracy spec for the channel due to the delays in thermal compensation. I can hold +/-1.5uV on a parallel circuit with copper or +/-1.0uV directly wired to the TBX-1303, but the thermocouple circuit floats with temperature (+/-200uV) and has offsets due to the voltage generated at the junctions were the calibrator is connected (~250uV). Any suggestions on how to address system calibration for this kind of a setup?
Thanks
HJ--<TC>-----J---<ExW>--------CJ(TBX)
HJ - Hot junction (measurement point of intrest)
TC - Thermocouple
J -Junction to
ExW - Extention wire
CJ(TBX) - cold junction @ TBX
No more junctions? Type of junctions? (keep contacts clean, equal temperature, ....)
Where do you want to place the simulator?
What is the accuracy spec, temperature range??
Type of simulator?
Do you have access to the HJ ? Can you use a mobile calibrator (small oven) ? For thermal calibration you will always have delays due to thermal stabilisation processes.
When it comes to higher accuracy, I'm not a fan of extention wires.
I have seen 4-5K drifts due to the bad extention wire and it's connection.
Sorry, just questions, no answers...

Generally Ethernet or USB extension wires
It is possible to get USB extension cables at any kind of electronics shop and also even in good supermarkets nowadays, and they cost as little as $5. Generally you'll find them around nine ft long, although they are offered in more lengths. A longer cable makes it lot more useful when utilizing such things as printers as well as scanning devices, particularly if they are being shared by other computers. If you have several computers sharing such devices you might want to think about setting up a network. However usually it is not essential for a family at home. On the other hand, an office building would likely benefit from the local network. Using a network where other personal computers and also devices link to a host, computers could share data as well as devices and without ever having to move them around.Generally Ethernet or USB extension wires are going to be used for hooking up computer devices to the principal hub or host as workplaces can be very large. Because of Windows plug and play feature, it is really effortless to connect printers and other units to the main hub. Configuring peripherals requires very little time because you will simply have to set up the host PC which all the other personal computers communicate with. USB extension cables need no external energy to operate which make them convenient to use. If you look around, you'll find that everything from cameras, external drives, web-cams and voice over IP phones are usually linked using USB cables, thus it seems sensible to have an extra cable just in case one goes amiss. While the future seems in favor of wireless technology, it'll be a long time that this becomes common and takes over the usage of cables.

Hi,
We recently had a new fireplace installed, which is nice. Unfortunately, in the process of doing this, the extension chord that comes out of the BT faceplate appears to have been damaged. The chap fitting the fireplace did his best to fix it - he worked out that the blue/white wire was faulty and swapped it over with the orange/white one (which apparently (according to him and http://www.wppltd.demon.co.uk/WPP/Wiring/UK_telephone/uk_telephone.html ) isn't used). However, it started playing up again, the phone lost its ringtone and the my Internet speed dropped to 512 kbps (it should be 8mbps).
Plugging the phone and the modem straight into the BT test port behind the faceplate temporarily solved this problem but I think I need a new cable and possibly faceplate too. I'd probably be able to fit it myself but I'm not sure if BT would be massively happy with this and I can see it being a bit of a pain to do (the wire leads out of the 1st floor and down to the ground floor. A ladder taller than the one I currently own and possibly cursing will be involved).
Would you guys recommend getting a BT engineer to fix it or if not, have you any advice on what leads or ADSL friendly faceplates to buy?Hi luther,
As already replied, Bt is rersponsible for the line up to the main socket, anything past this would be your responsibiltiy to resolve.
You can use BT for either disconnecting the faulty extension or installing a new extension. the visit charge would be £127.99 for an eng to disconnect it and if you wanted a new one istalled it would be a further £70 (not 100% sure on this amount but it is around this price).
I'm afraid it isnt as simple as the 'orange/white' wire is spair, as this depends on how the engineer (or electrician) installed the wiring and if any engineers have swapped any of the wires over (can swap to a spair pair if faulty).
The simplest and cheapest way (if you are comfortable in basic wiring) is to buy a new Extension pack from a hardware store (B&Q are resonably priced but seem to sacrifice the quality, in my experience) and completely replace the extension socket (can save time as you may replace just the wire to find the socket it self is damaged). The extension pack include a wiring diagram and are failry simple to follow.
one thing to be carefull of is the legnth of the extension wire (over 10 m can have an affect on BB speeds) and also make sure the pack is a copper wire pack (not aluminium as Broadband wont work over aluminium) -
Thermocouple k type fluctuation reading
I am new to Labview please anyone can help would appreciated.
I am try to read temperature using thermocouple K type with a module NI-9213 in Labview.
I used two individual channel. One is an ambient air temperature.
The second is one is mount inside of PVC tubing to read the temperature of air flow that also has moisture.
Ambient air temperature reading is working perfectly fine.
The reading in the inside PVC tubing is fluctuating. The temperature fluctuate between 4-7 degree Celsius randomly.
My question is what cause this fluctuation reading. Is it air flow inside the tube. Vibration? Moisture? CJC?
Please help anyone?
Thank you so much in advance

Go to Solution. It sounds like you have the right extension wire. This is very important because the dis-similar metals are what generate the TC signal. If you connect TC wire with copper wire at any point you have a new thermal junction that will add or subtract from the correct value (unless the temperature at that point is iso-thermal).
If your problem is turbulent thermal flow you can just glue the TC onto a small block of metal and put that in your pipe (but don't smoke it!). The mass of metal will act as thermal capacitor and naturally low-pass filter your output measurements. Of course you can fix it in the software as Tbob mentioned.

Extensions don't work.:(
Hey everyone.
We live in a new-build flat. It has the master socket downstairs near the front door (we live in a flat that has our own front door to outside and then stairs to our flat). We also have an extension downstairs near the front door and an extension upstairs.
BT have said that they've connected us at the exchange but only our master socket works. This isn't viable having everything set up down there because there isn't a plug socket next to the master socket and the wire is stretched out below the stairs.
BT have arranged for an engineer to come out on Friday (as they said we can be connected at the exchange and then they said that an engineer has to come out! Which is it? ). and I was wondering if they would sort the extensions out so we can plug in our router upstairs? I'm disabled and it being downstairs is really not a viable option in the long run.
Thank you in advance. Its Openreach who will visit if needed, but if your phone works in the master socket, that is as far as they can go. Anything past that point is your responsibility.
If the extension wires have simply been accidently disconnected, then the Openreach technician may reconnect them for you, if you ask nicely
They may even resite the master socket to the upstairs, if you have no need for the socket downstairs.
You could ask BT to send someone to sort out your internal wiring, but they would charge for it. Or you could get someone else to do the work in your flat, provided they are competent.

Fibre In, now Extension disconnected?
Extension socket now dead? Agreed to upgrade to Infinity 2 on HH5 from HomeHub3, Kelly's Engineer turned up, removed old faceplate, replaced with new faceplate, pluggs in HomeHub 5, swapped line at Cabinet, disconnected Extension wiring in Main socket explaining extension sockets would not work with Infinity?
Is that true, not at any point did BT advise me of the risk when moving across to Fibre, does not seem right to me?
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hi, well you could become my next best friend and save BT's reputation in my eyes...LOL
Slightly confused by what I no doubt is meant to be helpful, I have following wiring colours connected to each socket.
Main socket, incoming line on new Faceplate which has three slots for the wires, Blue on 5, then the Orange in the middle slot and finally the Green wire, the Extension cable is not connected but rolled back inside the faceplate.
At the extension end we have Orange in the middle slot of a 3 slot connector and sits on one side of the faceplate, whilst we have Blue on 3 and Green on 2 and nothing on 1 on the other connection point within the faceplate.
So which of the rolled back Extension wires do I connect to which connector in the Main socket?
I assume you simply push the wires down into their respective connector, in that no special tool is required to connect them? Probably do need something to disconnect them though? -
Extension Socket not working after Openreach Visit...
Hi folks, first post here.
The master socket in my home is a line box. I have one extension socket wired into it, not plugged. I only use the extension socket as the master socket (which was installed in a previous occupants time) is not conveniently located for my needs. Plugged into the extension socket is a filter for my broadband and telephone, that's it.
This arrangement has been working fine for years now until Tuesday 26th March 2013 when I reported online that I was not getting a dailling tone. Before doing so I established that the problem did not lie in the extension socket by taking off the lower cover of the master socket and plugging my phone in the test socket. The result was the same, no dial tone.
Wednesday morning an openreach engineer called to say that the fault had been outside and was now fixed but he needed to come into to take the call divert off. I had opted for the call divert to my mobile when I reported the fault online. He proceeded to take both the bottom and top cover off the master socket, did something and then put them back together again. He then took my telephone and keyed in a code to take the call divert off and then left saying everything was fine. Later that day I went to make a telephone call and the line was dead, no dialling tone again. So I plugged my phone into the master socket and found that I had a dialling tone there. I rang BT to tell them of my experience and the operative said that because the fault was after the master socket I would liable to a charge of £99 I told told the operative that it was not my fault and that I should not have to pay. I then asked to speak to the engineer and discovered that Openreach were contractors and that it would not be possible as the operative did not have a number for openreach. How absolutely riduculous, can someone advise please? Thanks
Solved!
Go to Solution.sounds like engineer has dislodged one of your extension wires in the master socket. if you take the bottom half of master off and make sure your 2 extension wires which should be connected to the back of the front plate to terminals 2 & 5. just make sure they are connected and tightly secured and extension socket should work

VERY strange lag on a Dell Optiplex 760
I thought it would be a good idea to keep a 16GB flash drive on my keychain that booted Arch so I could work on HW for college in a consistent OS! Everything is working great so far, but I ran into a very strange problem with a Dell Optiplex 760. During the normal Arch init process, everything loads great, except for when it gets to the udev stage where everything hangs. But here's the strange part of this scenario: the problems go away when I start typing random keys or move the mouse! If I don't do this, the system hangs completely from what I can tell. This happens at the console and with X.
The service tag for this machine is FDCQQJ1, and the dell.com driver area brings up this list of hardware and (windows) drivers for it.

I want to voice my disgust with the whole of this BT service.
Having renewed my contract with BT in April/May 2013 I had no end of issues with my service. The line was intermittently crackly and my broadband kept dropping out and hardly ever went over 0.02mb. I was constantly ringing BT and kept going through the routine of line tests, removing the front socket, etc etc which after a few months became quite labourious until one day they informed me it was my phone that was causing the crackle and so the reduced speed. I unplugged my phone and within days the intermittent broadband came back.
I rang BT who said it was something to do with the exchange and I had to wait days for the service to be fixed....as you can guess this didnt fix my problems so BT said then it was my ASDL filters and sent me new ones (actually they forgot to send them and so I had to call BT again to chase). Having got the ASDL filters- guess what it still didnt fix my issues!!
I asked for a new hub to which I was told I couldnt have a new hub as I was managing to get on line (although intermittently) and I would have to have an engineer out. I was reluctant to have one out as I knew I would end up in the situation I am in now....
Eventually I agreed to have an engineer out as I couldnt put up with the crackle or the lack of internet...it was now November.
Engineer came and guess what....no fault found!!! And the line was amazingly crackle free....Typical. The engineer said he couldnt understand why I had such poor broadband speed as my line was clear and suggested I get a new hub.
So another phone call to BT to demand a new hub. I got the hub and have had brilliant download speed of 16.89 ever since and still no crackling on the line. Terrific, problem sorted!
I called BT and asked for some compensation which they gave me...only £25 but better than a kick in the teeth so I accepted this payment.
All great until today 20/01/14 2 months after the engineer came to my address where I see BT have charged and taken the engineer fee from my bank.
FUMING!!!!!!!! Rang BT and as usual, hour long waits and lengthy calls and being passed from one person to another to be told that I had to pay as the engineer had wrote that the problem was my 'extension wire'. WHAT EXTENSION WIRE?????????? I dont have one!!!!!
I am disgusted with this. I asked for a hub before the engineer came and BT wouldnt give me one. Then after the engineer has been they give me one and charge me for the engineers visit. This couldve all been avoided and I would be £129 better off. I feel like its all one big scam. Big company like BT and they are robbing g**ts....if they didnt spend so much money on BT Sports they wouldnt have to rip us consumers off!!
I am now about to file a complaint to BT Openreach about this engineer. And I will be leaving BT as soon as this poxy contract comes to an end.
Id be interested in hearing if anyone else has recently experienced similar instances.
Off now for another lengthy call to BT to start my complaint!Hi disgruntledcustomer,
I'm sorry about the problems you've had with your broadband and we'll be happy to look into why the engineer has raised the charge. Please use the 'contact the mods' link in my forum profile under the 'about me' section to send in your details. You can find the link by clicking on my username.
Thanks

Blackberry service not working while internet is working
Hi,
I bought the blackberry tour 9630 last week online (v 5.0.0.975) and i am battling since then to register the blackberry service. I am new to the BB world , hence I will provide the details of the course of events:
-I called my network provider (Cell C of South Africa) and signed up for the BIS service. I was adviced to reboot my phone. I did so and I did the diagnostic test. It shows radio connectivity but the ICMP ping echo fails and blackberry registration =No, connected to BB=abort, PIN-PIN=abort. I tried rebooting the phone (some hard reset as well). same result except in some cases the ICMP ping test says=Yes. The MSISDN displayed there is not my number, it displays a number from India.
-I called up the operator and told them the problem. They linked the BB PIN with my own number on the BB server(I guess) and asked me to do a hard reset. I did so, but the result is the same, still the old MSISDN showing. The agent told me that Cell C (my operator) does not have an agreement with BB for this model (I doubt if she has full understanding of how BB devices supposed to work). I did check with the MEPD code that this device is unlocked (everything was displayed disabled).
-I then sent the 'register now' from the 'Host routing table'. I did not receive anything at that time, hence sent a couple of 'register now' request. The following day I started receiving the sms from Blackberry 'Your handheld has been registered with the wireless network'. I received couple of them, looks like every time I move from 2G to 3G or vice versa I receive that message.
-I tried the whole process of diagnostic testing again after receiving this message, still the same (BB registration fails).
-Itried changing the pre-defined MSISDN on the handheld from Advanced option>SIM card, it said 'error accessing SIM'.
Does anyone has any idea of what is going on? I need to know if the problem can be fixed before I send back the phone.ironman54 wrote:
Why would un hooking the wires and re hooking then work ??? I have this same problem - have been working with electronics since early 60's and this 'fix' would never have occured to me ! It sound like what many guys do when their car won't start - open the hood, jiggle the battery cables, stare at the engine and then call for the tow truck ! LOL !! Is there some type of 'reset' function like unplugging a unit from the A/C for 10 seconds to 'reset' or similar ?? Otherwise I don't 'get' why thise would fix anything. Its great that it worked but quite frankly it doesn't make a whol;e lot of sense unless one or more wires had been disconnected to begin with.
You say this was a 'common sense' repair, care to elaborate please 'cause the cold weather is coming and the set up I have now will not be very practicle in the cold weather: I'm runnng an extension wire out through the window to the jack on the service box. All inside wiring appears to be 'dead'. This doesn't make sense to me either considering the house is relatively new construction. Not like the wiring is ancient or anyhting.....ok, please enlighten me !
Probably because somewhere one of the jacks has corrosion in it and is shorting. When removing the plugs check the connections pins for green copper salts and if you see any clean them up and also the corrosion that is probably on the rj11 jack connectors too. -
I compiled and booted into 2.6.28 and switched xorg.conf back to
EXA.
Ok, it worked a little bit better but it did not WOW me. So, I compiled by hand the
latest intel driver and DAMN! very smooth in Compiz... "lightening fast" I don't have
any 3d games to compare but, some "artifacts" that were happening on startup of the
AWN dock are GONE. I can play a movie trailer and drag it around with wobbly windows
and it looks awesome.
Here's what I did....
use./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr or ./configure --prefix=/usr where appropriate.
[1] pthread-stubs
git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/xcb/pthread-stubs
./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr
[2] xf86driproto
git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/xorg/proto/xf86driproto
./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr
make install (its just headers so there's nothing to compile)
[3] Dec 22 version of libdrm (the latest)
http://dri.freedesktop.org/libdrm/libdrm-2.4.3.tar.bz2
[4] Intel driver
http://xorg.freedesktop.org/archive/ind … 9.1.tar.gz
./configure --prefix=/usr
Transitions everything now in Compiz is smooth, smooth, smooth....!!!!!!
Enjoy!!!!

I installed the system (latest ISO release), and updated it with "# pacman -Syu" (kernel updated from 2.6.33 to 2.6.34) and rebooted.
Now, when the booting log is coming to udev, the monitor just is turning off, it doesn't receive any signal, the led is blinking.
I booted from the CD and blacklisted nouveau in rc.conf, then I could boot the system, here is the log file when it tried nouveau:

It was very strange for me, because I had no idea about the KMS thing...
I thought it must be because I haven't installed x86-video-nouveau, so I installed xorg and x86-video-nouveau, un-blacklisted the nouveau module, but the same error happened. I blacklisted it again, booted. Now when trying "modprobe nouveau" in the fully booted system the monitor still goes the same bad way, reboot, here is the log of that try:

I think the problem is in "TMDS table revision 2.0 not currently supported", I just found that issue in http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/TroubleShooting.
As I can understand, there is no more nouveau-drm (I could find one only for LTS kernel) package (to try to update from AUR) and it is injected in the mainline kernel? What can I do now?
Thank you.

Try using some more nouveau goodness. I have no idea why nouveau-drm is unavailable atm - it was here yesterday ...

[SOLVED] lib32-printproto on AUR
Hi,
I'm trying to install lib32-libxp from AUR, and I can't because its depency (lib32-printproto) gives me an error:

Adopted and updated. New PKGBUILD based on Synthead's, from previous comment.

PKGBUILD is broken, pkgrel32 should be 3, not 2
Comment by: bchurchill on Thu, 24 Dec 2009 05:24:43 +0000
lib32-printproto should be listed as a dependency.
Everything else works! The PKGBUILD was updated to include Kray's comment that pkgre132 needed to be changed.

Thanks, that worked. I had to change the md5sum too, though. -
Solved It ... any experts care to explain this one...
ok, for 4 years ive had excellent broadband, in fact i checked the line myself as a BT engineer, I run my router off an upstairs extension, fitted it myself properly.
BT email me 2 weeks ago and say ill be on asdl2 and may experience some disconnections, ... i did .
The next day, my BB keeps going down, i work out that it happens when an xbox in our porperty is switched on, it cuts out the BB and i got an orange flashin BB light on my HH2
I phone BT, they fail to diagnose it and although i say it will do no use they send out an openreach engineer, i used to work with him in fact, he calls anyway and checks my line, all ok, he gives me a HH3 and it appears fixed
but for the 10 day signal to noise reset period we have sporadic fast and slow BB
more phone calls and i find out that the card in the exchange will not be reset for 10 days
when its finally reset is it fixed ........
Nope, now when an xbox is switched on and played, we have two, down goes the BB to 1/2 a meg, same problem as day one, i swapped the xboxes, phoned MS, open ports, open port forwarding for live ... all in vain
Could it be the power, i disconnect everything except the 50" plasma tv, it cant be that right !!!!!! its not internet able after all ..... errr yes it is the tv, everytime the tv goes on down goes the BB
i go to the master socket, take off the face plate my old work mate removed and there is a loose extension wire.
i reconnect it, and everything works fine
HOW could one loose extension wire give me 12 megs all day and night unless the plasma is on, i can only think that the wire was allways loose but has carried 7megs fine, then along comes adsl2 , this extenuates the issue and turns the dead wire into some sort of super aerial.
the plasma goes on and is picked up by this aerial and down goes my network
ANY Ideas.traidemark wrote:

Hi. Welcome to the forums.
What initially struck me was interference, which is was only noticeable at certain frequencies and "effective" when a certain bit of kit was turned on - and hence in resonance with the loose wire perhaps.
Over the years, various bits of kit have affected the BB signal, in particular Christmas lights/trees (so I expect there might be a few folk reporting drop outs soon ), lift shaft machinery, faulty power adaptors and all sorts of stuff outside the property (e.g. next door). A lot are very hard to pin down. The lift shaft one took a few months and a very interesting online blog.

Progess with my disconnection problem
So I was having problems with my Infinity dropping every 10 mins to several hours, only for a mere 20 seconds. After several calls to BT, they claimed I had a line fault, and eventually asked me to test my connection by using the test socket. Success! The connection was up for a whopping 1 day and 8 hours using the test socket! They told me they were going to phone me earlier today to see if there was any progress, but the guy who phoned didn't really seem to know anything about my problem, and simply told me a line fault had been fixed and to plug it back in to the main socket. This confused me, because I thought the fact that the test socket worked indicated some kind of problem with my main socket or the extension wires, not a line fault. I then tried to use the main socket earlier, but every webpage I tried to access took me to some 'BT Wholesale' page with some listed reasons why I got there. Any help trying to finally solve this conundrum?
