ThinkStation D10 memory

Hello to all community forums.
I am thinking in buying this memory modules for the D10. Samsung (M395T5750GZ4) DDR2-667 4GB ECC/FB-DIMM
Are theese modules compatibles? I think so, but its the first time I will open the thinkstation to upgrade and I´d want to be sure before buy.
Thank you very much

depending on where you find them, one 4GB module can be cheaper than two 2GB.   but, if all you want to add is 4GB total then you'll have to get 2 x 2GB.

  • ThinkStation D10 and processors problem

    Hello,
Can you please help us with this problem ?
Our partner bought a second CPU for the D10, option PN 43R2011. He installed the CPU and now the system stops
with error code "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause"
He wants to open call, but hotline declined that because the CPU is not a CRU (customer replacement unit).
What can we do now, who can give us tha approval to change the CPUs? or when can be problem with these processors ?

customer service is correct -- processors aren't considered CRUs and aren't allowed to be replaced by the end user.   ones installed by the user aren't covered by warranty and technical support won't answer questions about non-original processors.
with that said, your processors need to match.   your original processor has a C0 stepping and the new one has an E0 stepping.   this will cause problems.   the only solution is to find a second processor with the same stepping.
the exact same problem happened to a user in the following thread:

  • ThinkVantage tools and ThinkStation D10

I recently acquired a D10 (6493) and was looking forward to the same handy tools I use with most Lenovo products, ie the Productivity Center (which Lenovo specifically mentions ships with the D10), the System Update tool, the power management tools, etc.
This machine originally had Vista on it but needless to say I had no interest in keeping that so I installed Win7 Ultimate x64 on it. But when I install Productivity Center on it, it doesn't seem to recognize anything about the machine, ie no system overview with part number/serial number, etc. When I install System Update on it, the only item that ever shows in the list of updates after doing a check is a system migration tool. Despite the fact that when I had installed that there were a bunch of drivers etc that had not yet been installed. (Having an automated tool to install driver updates is one of the things I really like about Lenovo products)
Whereas when I installed a fresh Win7-Ultimate x64 install on my Thinkpad T400, the various tools recognize the Thinkpad as expected, the System Update utility displays the expected updates available and so on.
I realize that the Thinkstation may not use quite the variety of Lenovo tools that ie the Thinkpads do, but I know that they must use some, since ie some E10's I installed for a client last year certainly do.
    Am I missing something here?

since no win 7 drivers were qualified on the D10, TVSU will come up short on what's listed as compatible.   if you were installing vista again then the database would exist and the results list much more extensive.   win 7 includes many of the drivers your D10 needs anyway so you shouldn't be missing much if anything.
i'm not sure why TVPC isn't working for you.   the software is quite old and was sunset early 2010 if memory serves, which could explain it.   make sure that you're using the version for thinkcentre/thinkstation and not thinkpad.   they're different.
3.11 is the most recent version available from 2009:  http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-63443

  • Needing to improve solve times of huge problem (D10 Thinkstation)

We recently purchased a D10 6427CT system with two Intel quads 5420, 64-bit Vista, 8 GB of RAM, and two 500GB SATAs in a RAID-1 configuration. We are running large simulation problems and in a few of them we are needing more than the RAM installed, hence running for 2+ days. Unfortunately the software is not optimized for multi-threading. What are my options to improving performance, at reasonalbe costs?
These are my options/questions I have throught about:
    1. Buy more RAM (8GB from Kingston for ~$400)
    2. Can I connect a SAS HD to my system even though it came with SATAs? I thought I could buy a small 73GB SAS HD and use it to store Vista's page file (~$320).
    3. Any recommended or tweaks to my current Vista system to make it more efficient?
    Thanks

    welcome to the forum!
what simulation software are you running?   does it utilize the graphics card at all or is everything processor-based?
    1.  more memory might help.   while running your simulation, open the windows task manager and click on the performance tab.   if memory usage is maxed out then you'll have a definitive answer.
    2.  yes, you can connect a SAS hard drive to your system.   the lower row of SATA connectors on the motherboard are connected to the internal LSI SAS controller.
i have a 73.4GB SAS drive in my D10 used exclusively for swap space.   i don't know if it made things any faster but things are more efficient.   the one benefit is that my RAID arrays don't get hashed as much.   the single drive maxes out at 130 MB/sec both read and write.
if you decide to add a SAS drive then i can get you the part number for the cable you'll need.   it's about $40 after tax and shipping.
    3.  with vista i would recommend disabling auto-defrag, windows defender, and any other service which might try to access your hard drive at inopportune times.   if possible, disconnect your system from the internet and disable any antivirus apps you might have.   anything running in the background can potentially slow things down.

  • Brand new Thinkstation D10 server fails to boot, no beeps or screen display

This server had been working fine for several weeks and today I needed to reboot it. It has been rebooted several times before so so I wasn't trying something new.   I hit the Vista Start button and it immediately shut down.  I couldn't recall if Vista prompts you to Stand-by/restart/shutdown but I think it does - this time it didn't. :/   Afterwards, it would not boot.
    I tried:
Unplugging and replugging it in: it then attempted to boot but shut itself down again after about 30s.
    a Power Supply Reset
    Reseating the memory cards
Removing one of the 4GB memory cards
    Trying the other memory card
    Swapping the two memory cards
Inserting a bootable disk (it never gets to the point of reading anything although the drive spins up)
Checking that everything in the system board was plugged in
Making sure none of the wires were hitting anything else (shorting out)
When replacing that annoying cover from over the memory cards, made sure again I was not pinching any wires
The server does not beep and the (directly connected) monitor never comes alive to display anything when I attempt to reboot.
Per the docs, I observed the power supply Diagnostic LEDs and front panel Power LED while attempting to boot and only the green Diagnostic LED on the power supply is ever activated.  The table indicated this means replace the system board.
    Aack!
Before I head for the support # and an eventual shipment back to Lenovo, would it be worth my while to try and replace the CMOS battery?  Or would a failure of that battery still have resulted in some indication of the problem (beeping and/or screen display)?  Can anyone think of something else to check?
Just thought I'd ask around before assuming that I'm stuck with the system board diagnosis).
    Thanks

The list of things that will make a computer power down on it's own before it can ever get into the OS or initiate a video feed is a short list.
A CPU thermal trip usually occurs within 30 seconds.  This can be cause by a loose or improperly seated heat sink or a failure in the thermal grease coverage.  If your D10 arrived with one CPU and you recently installed a second CPU, try taking the second CPU out.  Should this work, verify the second CPU is the exact match to the first CPU and that the thermal grease is properly applied to the heat sink and the heat sink is securely mounted.
Ambient temperature thermal trip usually takes longer, but can be significantly shorten if the air baffle for the memory is not installed.  Computers with high Front Side Bus frequencies result in memory DIMMS that get very hot.
DC power trip.  This can happen if too much power is being drawn through any of the PCI ports or through the power supply itself.
When you are using a highend video card, check to see if the video card has it's own power connector(a small six lead box).  If it does, there is a power connector, from the power supply, to plug into it.  Without that power plugged in, the video card may appear to hum, and the it will draw too much power through the PCI slot.
Should you have added any additional PCI adapters, try removing these for a test. If that works, add one card back in at a time to isolate the offending PCI card.
Disconnect any USB or Firewire devices you may have attached, including the mouse and keyboard.  If it comes back up and you have video, power down and reconnect the keyboard and mouse only and try again.
If you have the memory card reader option and kids, check to make certain no one has inserted something into the memory card readers.  My kid inserted a quarter into one of the slots on my reader.  My workstation powered down pretty fast.   Consider moving the workstation to higher ground.
Last by not least, disconnect any additional optical drives you may have added.  Some SATA devices have both the standard PC power connector and the SATA power connector.  Do not connect both of these power sources to the same drive.  The drive will be damaged and your computer will not stay powered on for very long.
Should this all fail to resolve the issue, contact Lenovo support.  To make your support experience faster and more pleasurable, send them this list of things you tried.  If this list of possible fixes fails, it's probably a power supply or system board issue, and I would start with the power supply.
If an electronic device has a defect it will fail within the first 90 days.  Once you get it past the first 90 days, it is generally good for years.
    I hope this helps!!!

  • Thinkstation D10 Disk I/O

Hi, we have the funding to replace our current developer workstations which are currently Dell Precision 690's.
    Two reasons:
the first is abysmal quality control issues we've had with these since receiving them, and
two, discovering that the integrated SAS controllers were complete dogs which were hindering our development with bottlenecks at the Disk I/O level when using RAID1. Our apps were slowing down by nearly a factor of 10 until we found that breaking the RAID array got us back (closer) to a speed we expected. It was pathetic to realize that Dual Duo-core2 Xeon processors were practically useless as far as speed and power when the disks were slowing everything down.
So the question before we jump ship from Dell to Levovo and leave one set of problems to invest in a different vendor of problems:
    1) How can users here rate the quality control of Lenovo Thinkstations and service? We've used Thinkpads for years and I'm still fairly happy with them, but only have Dell experience when it comes to workstations and servers, so I want to hear about that.
    2) What kind of disk I/O performance can I expect to see from the SAS controllers in the D10's? Are they integrated or PCI(e), etc. cards? Does read/write slow down if RAID1? Would we be better off using software raid? (saw that in many cases on the Dells). We develop database intensive apps, and it is most database access which suffers and kills us in the past, so we are looking for something where this will be solved. I don't suppose any benchmarks would help much, since it would be apples and oranges to me comparing them to the Dells, but any info might help.
Finally, what are the power requirements for a typical D10  w/ 2 E5450 processors, 16GB 2-3 drives? I'm guessing our existing APC 1500 UPS's should be plenty, but just covering all my bases.
    Thanks for any input.

    welcome to the forum!
it sounds like you're looking to build a system spec'd almost exactly like mine, including the UPS.
disk I/O with the on-board LSI 1068E RAID controller depends entirely on file size.   my primary array is built from two 300GB seagate drives in RAID 1.   i typically get 125 MB/sec write and 243 MB/sec read speeds with larger files.   small files don't write as quickly but still read quite well.   i have an empty 73GB 15K SAS drive installed that i use purely as swap space for the OS and applications.   this moves the random writes off of the primary RAID array and onto a dedicated drive.   i don't believe in hashing an array more than necessary.
regarding quality control and service, i find little to complain about in the D10.   after using thinkpads exclusively for over 13 years, i decided earlier this year to move over to a D10 as my main workhorse.   to this day i have no regrets.   build quality is excellent and interal layout is downright logical.   support is backed by IBM's server team and i've had excellent luck with them so far.   one of the DVD-R drives in my D10 was DOA and service overnighted a new one and called back a few days later to follow up.

  • ThinkStation D10 7 Sata device

It is possible to connect 5 sata hdd and 2 optical device (sata) in a ThinkStation D10 6493-33G.
The motherboard has 5 sata connectors and 5 sas connectors.

update: i just installed a single SATA HDD on the SAS array successfully so it looks like you can install any SATA device on any of the 10 available connectors.   the SATA drive had to be flagged as 'online' using diskmgmt.msc to get it to show up in windows.   however, i still recommend using the hard drives on the SATA controller and optical drives on the SAS controller.
on a side note, i benchmarked the drive using both the SAS and SATA controllers and speeds were identical.

  • Thinkstation D30 memory modules

    Hello,
    I have a D30 with 2x Xeon E5.
I want to change memory to 32 GB.
In order to keep upgrading possible I want to use 16 GB Rdimms.
    In the Manual is stated:
    • If your computer has two microprocessors installed, install equal numbers of memory modules in both
sets of microprocessor DIMM slots for maximum performance.
That's clear, BUT is there a minimum of memory modules when you have 2x CPU's?
    So will it work with 1x 16Gb module at CPU1 and 1x 16Gb at CPU2 ???
    thnx again.

You can certainly run with a single DIMM for each CPU.

  • Windows 7 and Acronis in Thinkstation D10

    Hello
I open this post to share an experience about Windows 7 and Acronis Workstation.
This weekend I installed a new graphics card, an ATI HD 6850, I know this isn´t a working card, but I don´t work with CAD, 3D, renders, etc... I am developer, (programming + design).
The main feature to buy this card is Eyefinity, nVidia don´t let me use 3 monitors without SLI, (I can use desktop apps with two cards but not certain apps using Full Window), and reading post by Erik and other members, D10
    doesn´t support SLI.
OK, Windows XP don´t let me use 3 monitors, so Windows 7 is the solution. Once Windows 7 is installed and upgraded I reboot and made a backup with Acronis BR10 Workstation BootCD.
After that I installed the Lenovo Thinkvantage tools, (showing there is no need to upgrade nothing), work software, Intel SSD Tool and Windows Acronis BR10. When I finished reboot and made an Acronis BootCD backup.
I finished and I thought, "it's time to work". When I reboot, uppps, a "nice" blue screen.
First thought, I was wrong with the graphics card, there must be incompatibility, but first reboot without the software installed system works fine.
I use the Acronis BootCD to recover the second copy, (all installed), and the same blue screen, but when recover the first copy, (only system updated) works fine, so I made a copy with BootCD every time I installed
    something.
One of the crash shown "SSD getting started", I thought it was due to Intel SSD tool, but much people had installed this, and without SSD Tool, when I install Acronis in Windows, once again.
The result is I can install all software except Acronis BR10 Workstation, because in the first reboot after install Acronis the system crash and the "nice" bluescreen is shown.
I hope this can help others users and thanks to all.

I have been on Win7 Pro for quite some time and the local thumbs.db has only recently started showing up in the local folders.  I recall this was a problem when upgrading from Win XP but my laptop is a clean install from media.  I recently had
to wipe and re-install Win7 Pro on my laptop and the problem began with after the SP1 install.
We all want thumbnail caching - just not in the local folders.  The network share matter is a different animal.
What is perplexing is that Win7 uses several central thumbs.db type cache files and doesn't need the local thumbs.db file, and yet I am getting the exact same behavior as the others in this post.  I've often wondered if the junctions are causing this,
or perhaps if you sync to file shares for media like I do then once a thumbs.db is in a folder Win7 uses it - kind of a use local then central behavior.  Something for a deep gearhead to consider.
My solution that so far seems to work is to do the following:
    - I always have "show all system and hidden files" on my computers... so set that first if not set
    - In Explorer go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View and check the box for "Always Show Icons, Never Thumbnails"
    - Next from c:\users\[name]\ search for all files named thumbs.db
    - Delete all of the thumbs.db files (you'll need admin privs)
    - Now return to the Tools -> Folder Options -> View and uncheck the box for "Always Show Icons, Never Thumbnails"
This works for me, the local files no longer show up, and yet the performance is fine because Win7 is using the central db.

  • D10, boot problems, a never ending fan test!

I hate this noisy fan test!!! My dog always panics, if it is in the room! But that's not the problem.
If I switch on the external mains, the fan test starts and ends after some ten seconds.
If I push the switch at the front of the maschine, the fan test starts and - sometimes - never ends. In this case, the maschine - obviously - will not boot. What to do? - Repeat the procedure. Sometimes I need 10 or more attempts to boot the maschine.
Now I found (shortly before I decided to bring the maschine back to the dealer): The fan test succeeds nearly every time (and the maschine will boot), if I switch off all the external USB-devices (5 disks, WLAN-stick, memory stick, etc).
    My questions:
what's going wrong with the fan test at my maschine?
is it possible to skip this crazy fan test?
    Thanks for your help!
Lenovo PC Think Station D10 6427-H6G, Windows XP

regarding the fan test, this cannot be disabled.   thinkstations are designed for 24/7 uptime just like servers and the BIOS tests the fans at every boot/reboot.   since there isn't much reason to turn these systems off or put them asleep, the best workaround is to leave your D10 running 24/7 as it was designed to do.   mine only gets rebooted for windows updates, software updates, or video driver updates.   otherwise, it's up 24/7/365.
regarding the fans getting stuck, update your BIOS.   the latest version can be found here.
also, if you put your system to sleep, be sure to wake it with the power button and not your keyboard.   a few users have reported their fans getting stuck when waking with their keyboards.   i'm not aware of the issue happening when using the power button.

  • D10 Config Questions

Hi.  I'm configuring a D10 for use as a Photoshop/Premiere editing station, and I'd like to know whether certain components can be "user" installed later.  For example, I'm reasonably sure that if I order the machine with 4 gigs of RAM (2x2), I can later add FBDIMMS to bring the total up to 16 gig.  Can I order with one Xeon processor and later add a second? Do they have to be identical (speed and everything else)?  Can I order with one video card and later add a second? Do they have to be identical?  Now the tricky questions -- disks.  We have pairs of 15K rpm SATA disks that make a good, mirrored C drives in our current machines.  Can I use those and have additional disks configured as RAID0 or as individual drives?  Can I have SAS and SATA in the same machine?  What controllers are on the motherboard?  I appreciate that there are 5 drives bays in the lower front, but can I add additional drives in the "optical device" bays, i.e., if I configure with 5 SAS drives, can I add two SATA drives and place them in the optical bays?  (Is there a documentation location where I can get the answers to these questions myself???)
My objective is to keep the initial cost down while providing a growth path.  A single CPU and 4gigs of memory are more than sufficient for our current editing requirements.  However, new video formats (those used in the new highdef camcorders with solid-state or disk memory), which are not yet supported by Photoshop, will require a lot more horsepower to edit.  Support for that format is probably a year away, but I'd like to buy machines that will last for a while ...   (We have plenty of NAS storage, so internal storage is for performance.)
Thanks, in advance, for your guidance!
    Rog
    Solved!

    welcome to the forum.
the best thinkstation reference is the hardware maintenance manual.   it has setup, troubleshooting, and parts information all in one place.   videos on changing or maintaining components and systems can be found at lenovoservicetraining.com.
    to answer your questions...
almost all components can be user-installed including hard drives, optical drives, video cards, and processors.
if you order with 4GB then adding more later is easy.   mine came with 1GB (2x 512MB) and i traded it for 16GB (8x 2GB) the day my D10 arrived as i had already sourced the memory separately.
you can order with one processor and add a second later.   you do need to match the first processor so if you get a 2GHz E5405 then you'll have to buy a second E5405 later.   or, you can buy two new processors and upgrade both.   you will then need a heatsink assembly for a socket 771 processor.   you can either get one through IBM parts or buy it/them aftermarket.
adding a second video card is easy.   they will likely have to match though as i couldn't get both my quadro FX 3700 and the original FX 370 to work together.
i've never heard of 15K SATA drives.   are you sure they aren't SAS?   the connectors are almost identical.
either way, the D10 has 5 SATA and 5 SAS ports for a total of 10.   the SAS ports (blue) can also be used with SATA drives (including optical drives) and the LSI SAS controller can manage them without issue.   the D10's power supply has eight SATA power cable connectors so you're limited to eight drives total (optical and/or hard disk) unless you split power somewhere.   while physically possible, i wouldn't install any 15K SAS drives outside of the 5-bay array as it would negate cooling for the extra drive(s).   you could probably get away with 5 SAS drives in the array and 2 SATA drives in the optical bays though -- just keep an eye on temperatures of the SATA drives.
the LSI controller supports RAID 0, 1, and 1E.   the intel controller supports RAID 0, 1, and 10.   drives can be installed individually without needing to migrate into an existing array.   simply put, if you don't need RAID on a drive then you don't have to use it.
i hope that helps answer some or all of your questions.   if not then please feel free to ask.

  • Not impressed with my D10 purchase.

I have to say I've not been impressed with our D10. First it took us almost 2 months to get it, then a HD failed after about 5 weeks and I really don't think it's all that fast for the money we paid. The buzzing noise generated by the 15,000 RPM drives has me almost ready to throw it out the window. At first I thought it had something to do with the bad drive, but after replacing it, the buzzing is just as bad as it was before (perhaps worse). This is the first time we've bought a brand name computer and it will probably be the last. Next week we will be replacing 4 of our aging computers with no name machines from a local computer retailer.
That said, support has been great, Eric (the moderator on this board) helped me diagnose the bad drive and when I called Lenovo on a Friday, they had a new drive to me on Monday (very impressive).
I'm really not a negative person, I'm just not pleased.
    Thanks for listening,
    Neil Parker.

    neil,
something definitely isn't right with your system.   from 10-15' away, i can't even hear my D10 -- and my hearing is impeccable.
here are my specs just for comparison:
    - dual 3.0 GHz xeon E5450
    - 16 GB ram  (4 x 4 GB)
    - three 15K SAS drives  (2 x 300GB seagate RAID 1 + 1 x 73.4GB seagate for scratch disk)
    - two 7.2K SAS drives  (2 x 1TB seagate RAID 1)
    - nvidia quadro FX 4800
next time you hear the buzzing, open the access panel and see if you can determine the source.   push on various locations inside to see if something is loose.   heck, it could be another hard drive for all i know.   either way, your system should be quiet and i want to see you find a resolution.
btw, what video card are you using?   have you checked it to see if it could be causing a buzz in the chassis?
regarding speed, i can totally relate to the unrealistic expectations.   the "seat of the pants" dyno doesn't always match what a system can do in actual applications.   also keep in mind that the QX9650 is essentially a xeon X5450 running in a system made for DDR3-1333 memory.   depending on what you're doing, these two systems will seem equally as fast during normal tasks.   shorter processing times, error checking, stability, and expandability are where the rubber meets the road in the D10.
fwiw, i'm using solidworks 2008 and adobe creative suite 4 (among other apps) under windows server 2008 enterprise x64.   you're definitely pushing your D10 harder than i am.
anyway, definitely keep me posted on your findings.   i want to see you find a resolution one way or another.

  • Multiprocessor_configuration_not_supported Blue screen when installing Win 2008 on D10

    Hello,
Finally, I got my new D10.  Took about 1 1/2 month to ship.
    (2) E5430 Quad Core CPU
    24 GB memory
    (2) 2 TB HD's
Was planning on installing Windows 2008 on this machine.
Go to boot of the DVD where the disc is located. I then get a blue screen with the error that
    multiprocessor_configuration_not_supported
I've done some research and I've seen some posts saying upgrade the bios.  I checked and my Bios it as the newest release.
In the mean time I've tried install Vista 64 & Windows 2003 64 and both installed with no issues ( got past all of the controller SATA / SAS Controller drivers)
    So I'm stumped right now.
    Thanks

did both of your E5430 processors come installed in the D10 from lenovo or did you source one or both of them on your own?
if so, boot into vista and check the processors using CPU-Z.   make sure each have the same core stepping values .   both should be C0 or E0 but not one of each.   also make sure that you don't have an E5430 and an L5430 as this will cause problems, too.

  • Upgrade suggestions to improve Windows Experience Index scores on a D10

I received my new D10 last month and it is a DREAM MACHINE! Excellent build quality.
I am primarily a SOHO user (MS Office, Quicken, Photoshop Elements, etc.). I ordered the machine with the entry-level video card (256MB NVIDIA NVS290). Here are my Windows Experience Index scores (Vista 64):
    Memory = 5.0
    Graphics = 3.4
    Gaming graphics = 4.6
    Primary hard disk = 5.9
The base score is 3.4 due to the lowest (general graphics) score. I would like to use the Aero GUI and the base score seems marginal to support a smooth and fast Aero interface. If I upgrade to the FX1700 card (like ‘biowizard’s S10 machine below), would this increase my base score significantly on my D10? I know that it is I hard to predict the graphics score without actually installing the card in my machine, but if there is a reasonable chance of improving the base score, I might upgrade to a higher-end card.
Thanks for any advice. And thanks to Erik for his earlier advice in helping me to selecting a suitable configuration before I ordered the D10.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

speed in design/photography apps will be faster with a high-end card.   my D10 was ordered with an FX 370 since (for me) it was only ~$11 more than the NVS 290.   in both photoshop CS3 and CS4, the FX 3700 kills the 370 in all aspects: RAW conversion, filter speed, refresh speed, etc.   my new FX 4800 isn't much faster than the 3700 but gives me 3x more memory, which is important working with 21 megapixel RAW images on a 30" display.
one issue i have with the FX 370/570/1700 platform cards is that the fans are small and loud.   the 3700, 4800, and 5800 are almost dead silent.   if you want a quiet card, i personally wouldn't recommend getting a 1700.
quadro cards are built for longevity using high-end components.   i wouldn't worry at all about a fan failing.
