Tiger to Snow Leopard for my '06 iMac Intel duo

I've read that my iMac will run up to 10.6.8 but not beyond, once there it cannot boot in 64 bit mode nor does it support Open CL, what does that mean?

I have updated my Jan 2006 1.83GHz Core Duo w/2GB of RAM to both Leopard and then onto Snow Leopard as the releases rolled out. I find that for the everyday minimal tasks like Safari, iTunes, iPhoto, etc. there is very little difference between using it and the new faster machines. I also expect that when I do decide to move on to the next maching, that the wife and/or grandkids will contuinue using it for years.
So on that note: Yes upgrading the RAM in your Early 2006 2.0GHz Core Duo with a couple of matching 1GB modules will definitly improve it's preformance.

I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:

So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?

Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
#2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk of your internal drive (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway) or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
#3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

Do I have to get a hard copy of Snow Leopard for my iMac if I already have it for my MacBook?

I have Leopard on my iMac, and Snow Leopard on my MacBook (both with all available updates)~I tried to use the Snow Leopard Install DVD from the MacBook to upgrade the iMac, but it said "Mac OS X 10.6 cannot be installed on this computer." Why??? Do I have to get a hard copy of Snow Leopard for my iMac? Are there different upgrades for the iMac vs. MacBook?
I think I understand that once I have both computers on Snow Leopard, the Lion upgrade would be ONE upgrade for BOTH computers {I'm guessing I would need the client version for at home use}. Also, once Lion was on one computer, would I just go into the Mac App store on the other one and download the upgrade on the other one? But no additional fee would be charged? Lastly, I read about the combo option that includes all updates to Lion since it's release~would that be the main Lion upgrade on the Mac App or would I have to search for it?

The disc you used would have been the install disc that came with your Mac. These can only be used on that as they are made for that specific model.
Make sure your machine meets requirements
Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
At least 2GB of RAM
Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later (Mac OS X 10.6.8 is recommended)
7 GB of free hard drive space is recommended
Once you've purchased it would be a good idea to create a bootable DVD or USB

Hi,
the Intel Core Duo processor is a 32-bit only processor and not capable of 64-bit.
Only the Core 2 Duo and later processors are capable of 64-bit.

This is an error message from Numbers trying to open password protect Excel files, which it cannot do. Assuming you have Excel, use Excel to open it.

The only operating system you can upgrade to is OS X 10.5 Leopard. Snow Leopard requires an Intel processor, which the Powerbooks don't have. I confirmed the other day that you can still buy Leopard from the US online Apple store at 800-MY-APPLE.
Before you update, be sure you download any updates to non-Apple software that may be needed to run under Leopard.

Price for Upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard

As the topics says, my question is how much it will cost to upgrade my Tiger to Snow Leopard if its released.
Any ideas? I did read that Leopard to Snow Leopard Upgrade has a price of $29. Did this means, I have to buy Leopard and Snow Leopard because I am currently only Tiger user?

Those who have Intel Core 2 Duo processors will apparently see significant performance boosts with Snow Leopard. SN is also much smaller than Leopard. From [Apple's press release|http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2009/06/08macosx.html]:

There's also an interesting article in [last week's PC World|http://www.pcworld.com/article/166344/snowleopard_taps_into_the_macs_corepower.html].
According to the article, the main Snow Leopard performance boost comes from parallel processing across multiple CPU cores and graphics hardware processors, not just from the increased RAM address space.
We'll have to wait for further real-world tests, but an additional $29 may be a good buy for those Intel Core2Duo owners who already have or were planning to buy Leopard.

If you use the original installation disks which shipped with your computer, then it will install Tiger (10.4). However, if you use your Snow Leopard disk and do a clean install it will put you at 10.6.0 or 10.6.3 (depending when the disk was purchased, then simply use Software Update to update to the latest copy of Snow Leopard. Using the SL disk you can completely wipe your MBP and freshly install a copy of SL.

Problems with Aperture after upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard

Help! I recently upgraded my IMac operating system from Tiger to Snow Leopard. Now, I am finding my aperture is not responding the way it used to. I cannot change the border dimensions; I can't print. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I was told by Apple Technical Support that they will not provide support for Aperture 2 and that I would have to upgrade to Aperture 3. Is this correct?

Upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard - now have problems with basic apps?

I have a 2007 iMac (5.1, 2007) dual core. It's capable of running Snow Leopard and Lion (but not, I believe ML).
I just bought the upgrade SL discs from Apple and installed them as an upgrade, moving up to 10.6.3 (from the discs). After running software update I'm now on 10.6.8.
Since upgrading I've successfully run Time Machine. However I have the following problems:-
A bunch of emails were present in the Inbox, but contained no body text - just the subject line. I have managed to since find most of them successfully from TM. This is a minor annoyance but I thought I'd mention it.
ITunes won't boot up. It booted the first time I tried it, but since then the little icon just bounces up and down.
Certain apps won't quit properly. I quit from the top menu, but the little blue light remains under the icon in the dock. I then have to 'Force Quit - Application Not Responding' *every time*.
Safari frequently won't load up bookmarked or seach pages, the progress bar gets stuck part way across and I stare at the rainbow pinwheel for ages, before having to quit, then Force Quit, then restart Safari and try again.
Now, I'm tempted to do a Clean Install, but after four international moves (Singapore-Australia-UK-Canada) I no longer have any of the original discs, and thus as I understand it will lose iLife. And iLife 11 needs Lion.
I've done a disc permissions repair thing via the Mac Disc Utility. I've run a few clean-up operations via Onyx.
Any suggestions gratefully received. My Mac as been running great for years, but this upgrade has been extremely disappointing thus far.

Many thanks for your advice. I've read all the links and will be buying a 2nd external HD to do a SuperDuper back up. I already had a 1Tb drive with Maxtor back up on it, and I also managed to get a Time Machine back up as well, so at least my data should be safe.
Qn - If I back up the System and Utility folders as well as the Home folder, I don't suppose I can restore them after an install and everything (eg iLife) will 'just work'?
Anyway, I went straight from Tiger to Snow Leopard. I don't have any Tiger discs either (see reasons above) so now have no way of restoring original set up. I tried to boot from the SL install CD and then hold 'C' but must be getting something wrong as I don't get the Disk Utility pop up. It just boots as normal to the desktop.
Anyway, via the normal Disc Utitlity I've done a Repair Permissions again with no major issues. However, my Onyx software now won't run at all so I can't clean any caches a second time.
I've contacted the Apple rep who sold be the SL discs but she's not got back to me yet re iLife.
This weekend I'm going to try a fresh upgrade. If that fails I'll try Erase and Install, if I can get the 'C' button timing right. I'll update if I have any successs.

Tiger to Snow Leopard install and back up help

Hi all. First off I am a complete noob when it comes to Mac.
I recently purchased a new imac with Snow Leopard and have been enjoying learning it.
Out of the blue I had an opportunity to buy a late 2006 Macbook at a great price so I went for it. Its a Intel based Mac using Tiger.
I want to upgrade this OS to Snow Leopard and need some guidance.
I have done some research and have determined that I should be able to do this by purchasing the $30 disc rather than the box set with ilife.
I am a bit confused regarding the back up and install procedure however.
After buying the macbook I successfully upgraded the hard drive from the 80gig to a 320 gig using the free download of Super Duper to clone the entire drive. There are a lot of YouTube videos and post outlining this and it went without any problem.
(there doesn't seem to be as much info for upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard out there plus I have read some people have had problems)
So I need a back up and install plan.
Can I use Super Duper for this? It seems to me that cloning would duplicate everything including the Tiger OS so I would expect that there may be conflicts? Or does Super Duper have another copying function.(it does not have any help files)
Here is what I have to work with.
The original 80 gig HD and an enclosure. A new untouched 500 gig external drive.
Original Tiger install disc's and soon to be purchased Snow Leopard disc.
FYI the Macbook has no personal files or 3rd party apps that I need to keep. I have only done test uploads of pictures and video to test the all the ports and drives etc.
I do however need to keep all the included apps like iphoto, tunes etc .especially imovie 06 HD
A bit off topic but if successful I want to download imovie 11 but still keep 06 HD. Can I use both on the same machine?

The reason to back up is so when you do the installation of the new system if anything goes wrong you can back out of it. Is your backup drive bootable? Although technically almost all models are if you cloned the internal, some Western Digital enclosures aren't. See if the external shows up as a boot alternative in Startup disks preferences, and actually try booting from it.
So let's say you have a bootable clone of your internal on the external. You can now just update the OS on the internal using your SL disc. If all goes well it should only replace system files. If there is a problem you can always clone your external back to the internal and start over.
I don't know about 2 versions of iMovie. I don't use it but in general those more involved applications don't like multiple versions. In particular the new version might want to overwrite the preferences file for the old version, which the old version subsequently would baulk at using. There may also be plugin version issues, etc. I'd post this as a separate question on the iMovie forum.

Upgrade to 3g to iphone 4.0 and tiger to snow leopard steps advice

I'm looking for some advice on best steps for this process.
I recently upgraded my 3G phone - which is backed up on my imac, to an iphone 4.0. I run tiger 10.4.11 on it and then found out that I need 10.5.8 to get my iphone 4.0 going. I went out and bought snow leopard - as I thought it's a good time to upgrade the OS. I then found out despite having intel processors - you need more ram than I have. I have now gone out and bought 2 * 1GB RAM for about £40 from Crucial - here in the UK - should arrive in 2 days. OK - now that you've finished laughing.....
The plan : install extra RAM, install snow leopard, sync up iphone 4.0.
I'm a bit impatient though - is there a way I could use my wifes laptop - which has enough RAM to "start off" the iphone 4.0 and then sync it properly with my imac when my RAM is installed or just not worth the effort ?
Also, any tricks and traps while upgrading directly from tiger to snow leopard - I read something about cloning but I assume all I could do is do a full back up to disk (closer to 12) ?

Since, by design, the iphone syncs itunes content with ONE computer at a time, you'd be better off waiting until you get YOUR machine up & running.
