Time lapse photography on the cheap.

Needed to do some quick and dirty time lapse shots over the weekend. Automator has a Take Picture action but not all cameras are supported (for some strange reason) and even though I can tether shoot in Aperture my Canon 40D isn't supported by Automator.
So I cobbled together this AppleScript. It has the added bonus that the images are already in Aperture, no need to import.

Yes a great image, glad you found the script useful and I saved your fingers. I have found at -18 something a bit stronger then coffee is needed.
I had forgotten all about that one, as it uses GUI scripting (actually having the script pretend to press the buttons in the application) I'm surprised it still works. Any minor change to the applications UI will throw the script off so as a rule these types of scripts need constant tweaking between app versions.

I have an EOS T1i and would like to experiment with time lapse photography. I just read an Apple tip for the iPad and it is easy to do with the iPad but timing is something else. I would like to do it with my Canon and be able to change the timing between shots. Can you provide advice? I put time lapse into Google and it had an attachment for the T3i that I could get from Amazon. I don't know if it fit my T1i and don't know where to put it. Any advice would be helpful. I tried to do a search on this forum but could not find the answer.

Will Final Cut allow for Time Lapse Photography for days?

I have a new MacBook and am unable to use my old editing software from my powerbook so am needing to find a program that will allow me to hook up my video camera and let it record for possibly a full 24 hours, will FC let me do this?
I used to use the old iMovie to do long imports so now am stuck of what I should purchase.

Time-lapse still photos to IMovie???

I have a Nikon D2x that will shoot time lapse photography. I tried a test of 30 images (one second of video). So I have a folder of JPG images which I then resized to 640x480 at 72dpi.
At first I tried to import these stills into IM just by dragging and dropping my pictures into the clips window to the right of the viewer. It took a while for these to "render" but when they finished, I placed a few of the images in the time line.
I pressed play, thinking that each photo would show for 1/30th of a second, but what happened instead, stayed on the first photo, did a pan out, and then went to the next photo.
My question, (and maybe IMovie is the wrong app for this) is how do you take a sequence of still photos and have them play each for 1/30 or 1/24 of a second so that I can see the out come of my time lapse photography?

The easiest is to use QuickTime Pro ($30, from Apple). It lets you import a series of images to a movie, creating just what you want. You can tell it to import the images at 30 frames per second or any duration you want.
It can be done in iMovie too, but there are some hurdles. One is that iMovie lets us import a photo with a duration no shorter than 3 frames per second (shown as 0:00:03).
But there is a back door. See this topic:

That happened because the Ken Burns settings in the Photo Settings window were set to zoom in. Turn off the Ken Burns checkbox and import the image as a still instead of an animated video clip.

Does the time-lapse feature in imovie work well?

Hi, I just got a gig to produce a time-lapse video covering the changing light on a building from dawn until dusk. I work in Final Cut Express, but have heard that imovie has a time-lapse option; i.e. you can set up the Capture to only grab 1 frame out of every 30. Does this work well? Can I come out of my camera with firewire into a laptop into imovie and just capture onto the hard drive without running tape? (Otherwise, I don't know how I could record 12 hours continuously).

Time lapse with Camileo P10 or Camileo Pro HD

Hi,
I have both of these camcorders and I understand that time lapse photography is possible with them????? I've certainly seen a few sequences on youtube that are supposedly done with the P10.
I've been right through the menu's on both and I cannot see how it is done! Anyone able to help please?

I had to googled for +time lapse photography+ because I did not know what it is.
Now Im a little bit slier ;)
I assume both camcorders dont support such feature I also checked the user manual but could not find any details about that.

Time-lapse flicker unchanged after Color Stabilizer

I shot a sequence of still photos of a cluster of roses blooming in front of a blue screen for creating a time-lapse clip, my first time to try that. I have an NTSC-sized comp that fills the frame nicely with just one of the roses. As expected, there is flicker due to imprecision in the camera's aperture, and the rumor is that AE's Color Stabilizer effect should fix that. I have Keylight to key out the blue, and also TimeWarp to speed it up because the rose took longer than I thought to open (although that's optional, as I can just make the clip at its original length and speed it up in PPro when I combine it with backgrounds), but I made sure to put the Color Stabilizer below those other effects in the timeline - that should mean it is applied first, right? The Color Stabilizer in is "Brightness" mode, and because the rose's petals move, I put the "Black Point" on the blue screen. But it still flickers - it doesn't look like there is any improvement over not using the effect at all. Am I doing something wrong? Naturally, if the Color Stabilizer was being applied after Keylight, it wouldn't work because the background would already be erased, but I think it should be applying it first. If I have to put the Black Point on some part of the rose, I will have to chase it with a bunch of keyframes, and it may still not work right. Recommendations?
I wish there was an effect that would simply look at the whole frame's brightness and smooth each frame to a running average of several frames in a row, but as far as I know, such an effect doesn't exist.
Additional info: AE CS4 on Windows XP. The photos were for 1 second each @ f-8 with a Canon Powershot S3-IS, if that matters.

If the lighting and background are constant, there's nothing for Color
Stabilizer to do, you should not have needed it at all.
That would be true if I was shooting with my video camera (which I have done for many a sunrise or other less-than-one-hour time-lapses. But the problem is that most still cameras do not keep their aperture set while waiting between shots, and even in manual shooting mode with a specific f-stop, there will be slight variations. The flicker isn't caused by my subject matter, but by my camera.
In my case, I'm actually pretty pleased that my camera did as well as it did, considering that it's not an SLR. The flicker is not nearly as bad as some examples I have seen on the web. For your benefit, I made two half-resolution Quicktime file of the same 4 seconds of the middle of the sequence - this one has no effects at all, and this one has not just one but two effects added that are rumored to be helpful in reducing flicker: Color Stabilizer in "brightness" mode with the "black point" on the background, and Auto Levels with a Temporal Smoothing setting of 1 second. (Even at half-resolution and only four seconds, the files are still over 14MB each, because they contain the full frame rate of 29.97 fps, so be patient with the download.) To my naked eye, I can't see much difference.

processed the individual stills in a batch in Photoshop first, leveling
all variables.
How does one do that? I do have Photoshop (CS2), but I'm not much of a Photoshop expert and have no idea how to get it to compare levels between even two files, much less do such comparison in an batch fashion between thousands of files.

I didn't see anything directly relevent at first glance (deflicker discussions center around using VirtualDub on a progressive video file, but my source is 3000 still photos, my destination is interlaced DV-encoded video, and I don't really want to process and resave it multiple times if I can avoid it). But when I have more time, I'm sure I could learn lots about time-lapse in general by reading the forum threads.

I want to overlay elapsed time for 30 hour time lapse onto 30 minute video.

Title says it all. I have 92k pictures that I've put into an ~30 minute time lapse video. The pictures came from about 30 hours of recording. I would like to add a clock to show the time on to the video. I have sequences broken up by hours of the day, so I could create one hour segments very easily.
I've tried playing around with the timecode filter, but it doesn't do what I want it to (or I can't figure how to make it do what I want it to do).

There isn't a built in clock effect in PrPro... timecode is the closest to it but probably won't work for what you want. After Effects may have one, but I'm not sure. There are probably some third party ones but I don't know of any off hand. Otherwise you may have to build and animate it yourself using titles or something like that. Again AE may help with that but I'm not certain. The time lapse part should be pretty easy. You can import them as image sequences if they're sequentially named, or else import them with a 1 sec default duration and add them to an appropriately sized sequence using automate to sequence or just by dragging and dropping.

Aging time-lapse

Any ideas on how to AUTO resize/crop/perspective etc two (or more) portraits, according to one common item? (lets say for example eyewear, or the eyes, or any other object that could use as a guide item)

Well PS almost does this kind of operations with photomerge.
I suspect identifying elements in two images taken less than a second apart from roughly the same position and aligning them is considerably »easier« than identifying and aligning functional anatomical units in images taken at vastly different times and possibly even different lighting consitions.
One might be able to semi-automate the task, I guess.
One could for example manually declare the reference points (as PathPoints for example) and then automate the aligning – still seems pretty difficult to me, though.

Time lapse from stills

I am making a time lapse movie from a group of hi-res still images. The final needs to be HD to play looped on the clients HD TV.
We shot the stills only about 20secs apart. When I play the movie back, I get quite a bit of flicker. I do not beleive it is interlaced flicker I've been reading about. It is more of an exposure variance flicker. I've read that , that can be common on still camera time lapses due to the aperture is not exactly the same on all frames?? I hear there may be a plug in, Boris FX for after effects that will help with this??
Any help on this would be great!
Also, the test movies I've made with several different compressions are too soft.

Since it sounds like you have After Effects, you may want to check out Stephen Schleicher's tutorial on removing the strobing from time lapse footage. It sounds like it's exactly what you're looking for. It uses the built-in Color Stabilizer filter to accomplish its task.

Seeking advise on techniques for making a time-lapse movie

Hi, This isn't technically a question having to do with FCE directly, but it seems like a good place to ask. I need to make a time-lapse movie showing the changing daylight on a fixed point from dawn until dusk. It will be edited in FCE, but I have no idea of how many seconds I should shoot at a time, and at what intervals I should shoot them. Or.... would there be any advantage to shooting still photos and then importing them into FCE?
Can you suggest any resources which I could read on the subject?

Lets say you are doing this shoot at equinox (ie 12 hrs between sunrise and sunset).
Since most cameras do not hold storage media that can hold 12 hours of media in one file, you need to either use an intervalometer setting on the cam (allowing for incremental recording) or record to an external drive that CAN hold 12 hrs of media.
The approach one takes depends upon the recording limitations. If using external storage that can record the full length, it's just a matter of bringing in the file and speeding it up to whatever makes sense to your needs.
If you are going to use an incremental capture approach, then you really do need to know what will be the speed of the final clip. Is this thing going to play back at real time? 2x, 10x, 100x? Or, asked another way, how long do you want it to run? 30 sec, 1 min, 5 min, 20 min, etc?
Once you know that, it's really simple math to figure out.
Video (in NTSC land) runs at 30 frames per second (29.97 if we are being precise).
This means if you were to record it in real time you'd require 1,296,000 frames
12 hrs x (60 min per hr) x (60 sec per min) x (30 frames per sec).
If you want it to play 100x faster, you would need 12,960 frames. This can be accomplished by recording every 100th possible frame (that is, snapping an image every 3 1/3 seconds)
Or, if you work it backwards - thinking that you'd like to compress 12 hrs to 12 minutes, you'd need to acquire one frame every 2 seconds. (This yields a 60x increase in speed.)

Using Time Lapse function after importing video

Hello!
I have IMovie 08 and import my video via a sony handycam. I want to edit the video to reflect the time lapse style. The video would be too long and boring otherwise and my handycam won't allow me to record this way. Is it possible to do this in IMovie 08 during editing? Any suggestions on where I might watch a tutorial or read how to do this?

I don't know if it's a fix, but when them clips(fast one's), are in the project, click on it's blue gear(inspector),> Clip Adjustment> Speed= should be 100%. If it helps until fixed, try and slow it down to normal. Just a tempory fix, unless you find the problem on that way.

Time Lapse App Not Available

Hi all, I recently purchased an A6000 and was eager to install the time-lapse app from the play memories camera app store. Unfortunately, despite having access to the store and some apps, the time lapse and some others (it seems I only have access to the free apps...) do not appear... I purchased the camera in Dubai (UAE) and that is where I accessed the PMCA store... Could that be the reason? I would be surprised as the MEA website seemed to welcome the update of time-lapse V2.0 recently... Any idea on how to get the app? Thanks!

Calculating time lapsed using Now function

I have a column named Time Lapsed which is the difference between the present time and the event occured time. How will I use now() function to evaluate. let's say I have a datetime field called 'EventTime'. I tried the following calculation
now() - EventTime but doesn't seem to work. Please advise.

I created a data object calculated field "Now" : Now()
and a calculated field TimeSpan : Now - EventTime
where EventTime field is a datetime field which gives when the event occured.
Issues faces is the TimeSpan field should keep ticking like a Stopwatch, but this one only gives the value on loading.
How will I get around this. Any use case?

Any tips for editing an HDV time lapse?

I have done some extensive Googling on time lapse and understand the limitations of video as compared to film, and how most professional time lapsers use still cameras. Be that as it may, I am just having some fun with my new HDV camera and its built in time lapse/interval record feature.
What I would like to know is if there is an easy way or any tips/tricks for processing it? Being HDV, it has captured as several hundred 15-frame videos.
Any advice?
NB What I have tried so far is:
1. dumping all the clips onto the timeline (thank god they fall in order!)
2. changing the speed of the first one to 00:00:00:01 frame
3. pasting Attributes: Speed over the rest of them
(please don't laugh if this is a ridiculous method; I am very new to this!)

Just wondered as it might make sense if it was 15, as that is the GOP length for HDV, meaning that perhaps the camera records the pictures this way to ensure that you will have a complete 'i' frame... just a thought...
