To eject or not to eject

My combo drive has gone mad . One day he refused to eject my cd's . I could hear it struggling to eject them , but something sounded like it was stopping the cd's just when they were about to pop out .
If shut down my PB and let it cool down for a couple of hours , when I restart , the problem is gone , the cd's eject just fine...for about another 40 - 60 minutes .
Then when the PB warms up , especially in the cd/dvd drive area , the cd's get stuck again . I push the eject key , the cd makes its way out , but when it reaches the edge of the slot drive (before I even see the cd) , it goes back in again , like someone would brutally push it back .
What could it be ?!?
Any ideas how to fix the problem ?
I must admit that I have a temporarly solution but very rude and violent.....If I slap the laptop just beneath the drive when the cd is ejecting , the cd comes out like my PB would spit it in my face . I guess he doesn't like that very much .
Thanx for any ideas .

Hi Zeny,
I'm afraid that there's actually very little troubleshooting to be done with faulty drive ejects. Besides the 'check that it's actually ejecting' routine, verifying that the drive cage is properly seated in the chassis, short of replacing the actual optical drive there is little you can do.
I would suggest probing the slot for any obstructions, using a paper clip or other thin edge. I'd avoid any other action if the unit is still under warranty.
Bringing it in to an AASP might be your only real recourse here.
Good luck!

  • Nano 5th gen -- to eject or not to eject?

    Hi all,
Each of my daughters has a 5th gen iPod Nano.  For one of them, after I sync with iTunes, it says "OK to disconnect."  For the other -- also a 5th gen -- I have to "eject" the iPod to disconnect it.  Both are running on Windows laptops; both are configured more or less identically.  Anyone know why there's a difference?  The younger daughter's is the one that requires ejecting, and I'm concerned that she'll just yank it out without properly "ejecting."  All ideas welcome.
    Thanks!

  • Eject is not working when installer asks to insert second disk

I have a quite strange problem, when i'm installing world of warcraft on my laptop, everything goes allright for a first (of 5) dvd, it's running install till 20% and then asks to insert a second disk. When i'm trying to eject the first one it says, that a disk is in use and refuses to eject it (nor the eject button, nor dragging cd to bin works). But this is not the end, when i even closed the installer, it still is saying, that disk is in use, and doesn't want to eject it until reboot.
Maybe someone had this problem and solved it? Please, help, i don't want to download 4 gigs of installation.

    Hello,
I just had my DVD drive replaced by Apple. This did not solve my issue. I am still unable to install WoW. Any help would be much much appreciated... This is SO frustrating...

  • Error message "disk was not properly ejected" while syncing to iPod Classic

    Hello,
I am having a terrible problem with my iPod Classic. All was fine until this morning. For some reason now when I try to sync iPod I receive several error messages. The iPod will start syncing slowly then I receive "Disk was not properly ejected". At this point the iPod disappears from left side of iTunes. The iPod still says "connected". After I click "ok" on error another error message appears saying "iPod cannot be synced, disk could not be read from or written to".
Please help, my music is all I have as I am wheelchair bound.

To be clear, I'm unsure whether or not iOS 6.0 is the latest iPod Touch software but I did get this error message when I attempted to update:
I hope this helps. Thank you!

verify on another Mac if the same
WD is having issues with mavericks as you can see on the WD forum, did you install any WD software (never do that) when you connected the drive for the first time?
possible issue is a dead SATA bridge card or the new WD firmware w/ Mavericks.

  • "A disk on [computer] is in use and could not be ejected."

Yesterday I was doing a few things and needed to connect to my desktop iMac (running Tiger). When I did I was surfing through the applications folder on that computr when I accidentally opened iTunes. It did open, so I quit it. Anyway, then I ejected the disc, but it wouldn't eject. So I just ignored it and did a softyware update that had been nagging me, then after that I shut the computer down but it wouldn't shut down. The menu went and everything but the cursor remained on screen as did the default background, I didn't have time to sit there waiting for it do whatever it was doing so I just held the power button down and forced it to turn off.
Now though, whenever I turn the computer on, it always opens a window immdiatly after loading asking me to enter the password to connect to my iMac. I can just click cancel but a lot of the time I don't want it connected all the time. If I do connect to it at the start, I cannot disconnect from it. If I click on the disk in the Finder window and click Disconnect it just ignores me and if I click on the eject button next to the disk it comes up with the error in the subject line: "A disk on [computer name] could not be ejected because it is in use." Or something along those lines anyway.
Confusingly, if I click cancel to the enter password window that appears at start up, I can use the computer as normal, I can even connect to the iMac normally and disconnect from it.
Any ideas how I can stop it doing this? Does it have something to do with me opening iTunes on the other computer? Thanks.

This has obviously not getting much attention so I posted again and made my question more clear.

Hi there. Hear are some other options . Hold down for click on the track pad while restarting and keep it down all the way thru boot. Or use right click on a mouse. If it's stuck, sometimes sticking a business card in top edge of slot while trying the eject option can work.

  • "is in use and could not be ejected"

I want to eject an external hard drive (actually my time machine hard drive). Time Machine is finished but the drive activity has not and is sucking the speed out of my computer (as it always does when Time Machine is active).
When I try to eject the hard drive, it tells me it "is in use and could not be ejected"
The drive is not in use. All I have open is Safari, TextEdit and Word. All documents are on my main hard drive. How do I find out what program it THINKS is using it, or do I just have to give up and lose all my pages of information?
This is actually a continuing problem. I hate to lose all my data to keep restarting the computer because of this drive.

If you have the problem where you can’t empty the Trash or eject a disk because something is preventing you? Usually the reason is because some application has a file open, and thus you can’t get rid of the disk or trash the file. Then use What’s Keeping Me! What’s Keeping Me will identify the application that is preventing you from accomplishing your task. You can then use What's Keeping Me to quit, relaunch, or kill the problem application so you can get on with your business. http://www.hamsoftengineering.com/products/wkm/wkm.html

  • Frequent message that time machine disk not properly ejected

I am using a 750 GB USB HDD for Time Machine backups.  I am getting frequent pop up message stating that the external drive was not properly ejected when in fact it wasn't ejected at all - on 24/7.  Backups are halted until I click the OK button on the pop up.  This seems to happen when I get back on after the machine wakes up.  I had the same problem with my 2007 iMac (which this machine replaced) and I googled the problem and found that many had the same issue, but couldn't find a solution.

Thanks for the suggestion, Kappy. Indeed my Energy Saver preferences were set to sleep the Hard Drive whenever possible. I just disabled that. My TM drive has not been kicked out since, but I'll know better in a few days if the problem has been completely solved.
    Fingers crossed.

  • "Drive not properly ejected"--How do I keep a USB drive mounted constantly?

I have a 2-month-old iMac, and have had a USB external SATA-enclosure 2.5" 500gb drive attached the whole time. About a week ago, it started randomly giving the "Drive not properly ejected" message and usually it remounts after a few seconds. Sometimes it doesn't and I have to unplug it and plug it back in.
I thought the drive was at fault, so I switched it with a similar drive that was connected to my AirPort Extreme base station. The problem stayed with the Mac. Also I imagined that (somehow) the iMac wasn't supplying enough power, so I bought a powered USB hub. The result is the same.
I don't understand how it can work for two months and then suddenly get this problem. The only change along the line is that about a week ago I did a software update ("About this Mac" says it is 10.6.7). The latest update DOES coincide with the appearance of this problem.
    How do I resolve this?
(Notes: There at least one other thread here where people seem to think that this is a Time Machine problem. I think this is because many people connect large external drives for the purpose of backup. I upgraded to iMac from Mac Mini. I installed Snow Leopard right after I bought the iMac and then tried to restore from my Time Machine backup. Something went wrong, so I mirrored my Mac Mini drive onto a 500gb SATA 2.5", put it in a FireWire enclosure and boot from that. I use the iMac's internal 1T drive for Time Machine. That may sound like "lazy man solution", but it could have a great advantage someday where I could plug that FireWire drive into my Mac Mini and not have any downtime should iMac need to be repaired. The random disconnecting of the USB drive doesn't coincide with any Time Machine events. TM is working fine.)

    Kappy,
Thank you for your help with this problem!
Your hypothesis for the drive/enclosure being a problem is good thinking, however:
-The problem never existed for the first two months I had the iMac.
-I can switch similar drives with iMac and AirPort Extreme, and the problem stays with the iMac.
-It has nothing to do with Time Machine as I am using a FireWire drive to boot, and the iMac internal 1TB for Time Machine.
-A friend suggested a cable problem, but I have tried many combinations and it wouldn't explain why suddenly after 2 months three sets of USB cables can fail at the same time (at least one, I used for 3 years with Mac Mini.)
I now have a 111gb drive connected to my AirPort Extreme and it has been copying files to my FireWire drive slowly but surely for two hours now. The same drive disconnected after 13 minutes on the iMac. All indications are pointing to OSX 10.6.7. The perfect test (for anyone with convenient resources) would be to install Snow Leopard from disc on a clean Mac and not upgrade it, plug in a USB drive and see if it can last a day or two. Then, upgrade to 10.6.7 and see what happens. I hope someone can try this.
(Is this a ploy to try to sell more FireWire equipment? I hope not.)

  • After ejecting a disk plugged into the USB port using Finder, I am now getting "The disk was not properly ejected" message.  This didn't used to happen.  How can this be corrected?

After ejecting a disk plugged into the USB port using Finder, I am now getting "The disk was not properly ejected" message.  This didn't used to happen.  How can this be corrected?

When you right (control) click on the disk and click eject "disk name", do you pull it immeadiatly or wait a few seconds for it to unmount? Try waiting and see if you get the same message. If you do, when the disk is connected go to applications/utilities/disk utility, after opening DU, select the volume in question from the left side bar and try a permissions repair, you may also run verify disk and see if it comes up with any errors (they will be in red)

  • USB Eject - Seems to not completely Eject

On my wife's Macbook with tiger, when she ejects using the finder eject button, the blue light on the USB Stick goes from flickering to solid ON. The key does disappear from the finder's list of devices, but the blue light remains on. On other mac's or PC's the blue light goes off after eject is complete. She has noticed also after ejecting on the Mac, the key gets hotter.
    Sounds bad!
Anybody got a clue? Sounds like a firmware or possibly hardware problem. But other USB devices all work perfectly. I may upgrade it to leopard, perhaps there's some USB driver fixes in it.

    Hello,
Well, I don't think it's a problem you need to worry about.
The same thing happens with my Sandisk Cruzer Micro. The light stays on even after it is ejected from OSX. (But the light does go off when I unplug the device.) I find this undesirable, but doesn't effect functionality at all so I just ignore it. I think it is mostly because Sandisk engineered the device to have the dumb U3 functionality.
Oh and the key is hot because the macbook's USB port is hot, not because the key itself is generating heat. If you plug anything in the MacBook's USB port, no matter what it is, it will feel hot to you when you unplug it and touch the tip.
