TOC and section markers

Can section markers that are added to a master page and updated with in a document be added to a TOC. I have created a paragraph style for section markers and added it to my TOC style but it will not show up when I create my TOC.

Thanks for your help Peter.
Maybe you can help me with my next question. Again my document is broken up in to sections and in each section I have photos that I would like to add figures to. I have figured out how to create the figures and have them cross referenced, but I would like to have my figure reference the section number like so (Fig. 1 – 1.0) and (Fig. 1 – 2.0). Is there a way to do this

  • Generate TOC with Section Markers?

It's been a while since I've had to setup and create a TOC for a single file long document, but I'm pretty sure that I've created TOCs this way in the past. So, why won't the text in Section Markers show up in the TOC? Is it even possible to generate a TOC that has Section Marker text?
I'm using InDesign CS5 in Windows. I've got a single file document that I'm trying to generate a TOC for. I've designed a 16 page handbook in one inDesign file which includes a Cover page, TOC page, and seven "chapters".
I created separate sections for each "chapter" and used Section Markers at the top of the Master page for the chapter names. This is something I've done in the past for single file long documents with multiple chapters.
I've set the first page of each "chapter" as a new Section on the Pages panel. In the Numbering and Section Options for each page, I've checked Start Section, Automatic Page Numbering, Page Numbering Style: 1,2,3,4... and in Section Marker: I've put the "chapter" name in the text box.
I set up Paragraph and and Character Styles and used them throughout my document. When I set up the TOC I set up everything correctly, including my Section Marker style for the chapter names and a heading style that I used for all the sub headings in my file.
When I insert the TOC, the sub headings with their page numbers generate but the chapter headings which are Section Markers do not generate. Am I missing something or is it even possible to include the text for Section Markers in a TOC? I'm sure that it's worked in the past. Can anyone offer a solution for this?
    thanks,
    Kat

awesome! ...worked like a charm. I knew I was forgetting something.

  • Section markers and pages

Hi, I have a document which I've divided into sections (mainly for the purpose of putting different headers into each section).  The problem is that whenever I add content to a page that overflows onto a new page, the section marker for the next section (the little down arrow above the page on the pages panel) doesn't move as well, forcing me to remove that section marker and make a new section marker on the next page where the beginning of that section was bumped to. Is there a way to get around this? Maybe I haven't set up my document/sections right?

Sounds like you want running heads that change according to the content on the page, instead of static section markers attached to the pages themselves. I didn't see a version number anywhere in this thread.
With ID CS3, Adobe added variables. The Running Header Variable will let you pick up the content of a paragraph or character style from text and display it in a running header. So, for instance, if you want your chapter title to display at the top of all left pages, you make a running header variable that references the chapter title paragraph style and put it on the left master page. Now at the beginning of each new chapter (or whenever you've used the chapter title paragraph style) the left running head will change.
    Is that what you want?

  • Table of Contents and Section Numbering ??s

Hi, we are using CS6 and have a couple questions about trying to use automated section numbering and table of contents in a single document. We don’t do this often (actually, never used auto-TOC before), so I just want to see if I’m missing something obvious.
SECTION NUMBERING WITH SECTION INTRO PAGES
Our document (a style guide) is divided into sections. Each section begins with a section intro title page, which is basically just a blank page with the new section’s title nicely styled. We are setting up our sections as 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. And we would REALLY prefer for the page numbering to be ’1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.’, where X.0 is the section intro page.
    1) I can add the sections OK with a prefix of 1., 2., etc. But InDesign does not allow me to start the section numbering at ’0′, it must be ’1′. So my intro pages HAVE to be 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, etc. instead of 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 etc. Any creative workaround to solve this??? We really don’t want the intro pages to be X.1, as they have no content and we want the X.1 page to be the first with content on it, NOT X.2. How do people generally handle a section intro page?
    AUTO PAGE NUMBERS AND TOC
We are trying to use the automated Table of Content feature and running into an odd issue. We have page titles on top of each page in a unique paragraph style (H1). We are adding the page number at the beginning of this paragraph using ‘Type > Marker > Current Page Number’ and a unique character style. It’s working fine on the pages, showing the appropriate section numbering we setup for the document (e.g., 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, etc.).
But when we make the table of contents, the ‘page numbers’ at the beginning of the titles are coming in as absolute numbers (e.g., 7, 8 , 9, 10, 11, etc.) instead of our section numbering. I checked the General Preferences, and it is set to ‘View: Section Numbering’. And when I exported an interactive PDF, the bookmarks also add the absolute page number at the beginning of the titles as in the TOC. But if I set the TOC to include page numbers automatically, those DO display correct section numbers (they just precede or follow our titles with the incorrect numbering).
    2) Any ideas why the TOC and PDF Bookmarks would be picking up absolute numbering while the actual titles on the pages show the proper section numbering?
    THANKS!

I've never tried adding a second marker to a paragraph like that. Why not use a numbered list instead?
Just checking in here. Not sure I understand what you mean about using a numbered list. Do you mean instead of the page numbers in the titles, or instead of the Table of Contents? Not sure how either could be automated to stay in sync with adding/removing pages and creating the TOC links and bookmarks in our PDFs.
    - Is there a bug when the TOC pulls the specified title paragraphs and they have page numbers in them?
Thanks. Still trying to see if we're doing something wrong as this is the first we've played with TOC.

  • TOC  and hyperlinks in PDF

    CS3 (5.0.4) on Mac 10.5.7 (Leopard)
When I generate a TOC, if i select the "Create PDF bookmarks" option, the entries also create hyperlinks to the location within the PDF.
In the PDF, if I click on the TOC entry, it jumps to the page where the entry starts.
    All well and good.
Where I am confused is the Hyperlinks panel in InDesign.
These hyperlinks do not show up in the panel.
However, if I select the text in the TOC and choose "Hyperlink Options..." in the Hyperlink panel, it gives me the options for that link, including a weird name, such as .7890 that I assume is auto-generated.
So it seems that there is a hyperlink there, I just don't see it in the panel.
(I do however, see a list of bookmarks in that panel.)
If I create a TOC where the "create PDF bookmarks" is not checked, it still seems to create hyperlinks, they just aren't active, or they don' t have a destination(?). If I select text in the TOC and choose "Hyperlink options..." it shows me the options (the hyperlink type shows up as "All Types"). Furthermore, I can't select the text and choose "New hyperlink" which indicates to me that there is already a hyperlink there.
Can someone explain to me how the creation of hyperlinks/bookmarks from a TOC is working and if I can make the auto-generated hyperlinks appear in the hyperlinks panel?
I've read through the sections in Help and in RealWorld InDesign CS3.
    Thanks!

No, is not at all a problem related to maintaining forms.
    All the contrary.
Please be kind and read again the post, is a problem with links, with the integrity of the file, with anomalies in behavior, just with many things far beyond the user that can not be reduced to that known resource:

  • TOC and Cross reference bookmarks

Hi. I recently finished work on a book that had front matter containing a brief TOC and a detailed TOC. The book also contained individual TOCs at the beginning of each chapter.
I updated all numbering across the book files before generating the TOCs in the front matter, then generated the brief and detailed TOCs using my TOC Styles. However, I assigned cross references for the individual chapter TOCs. May not have been the best choice.
Because there was special styling for some of the front matter TOC entries that wasn't easily specified using just the TOC Styles, I cut and pasted groups of entries from the generated TOC on the pasteboard into a new frame on the page. I checked in Story Editor to ensure that the invisible markers for the TOC entries had been copied into the new frame.
When I exported the files to PDF, the TOC entries no longer pointed to the correct pages. They simply pointed to the first page of the PDF when clicked. Furthermore, no bookmarks showed up the TOC entries in the Bookmarks panel, even though I had "Create PDF Bookmarks" checked in my TOC Styles.
    I have three questions, then:
--Is there any way to reclaim the behavior of the TOC bookmarks, and their display in the Bookmarks list of the PDF, if the entries are copied and pasted into a new frame in InDesign, without doing this manually in Acrobat Pro?
--Is there any way to get cross references to display as bookmarks in a PDF, assuming that I needed to make individual PDFs of each chapter, without doing this manually in Acrobat Pro?
--I'm betting that all files should be exported from InDesign as a single PDF in order for all TOC and cross reference links to work properly, without manual intervention in Acrobat Pro? If so, and manual intervention is required, is this accomplished by cataloging/indexing in Acrobat Pro?
I need to be able to pass this information along to a publisher who is now requiring all of their compositors to submit bookmarked PDFs with their printer files. I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this one, but I would like verification from the pros here. Thanks!

  • Not able to edit the words "chapter" and "section" in the document workflow

    Hi all,
I would like to point out something that could be a bug. The 2 words "chapter" and "section" are not editable in the document workflow: I can just change the title for each chapter and the title for each section, but I am not able to change the words "chapter" and "section".
The problem is, iBooks Author is using the words "chapter" and "section" (heading 1) to build the TOC: if I am using iBooks Author in English, but I am writing a text in French, I am not able to change "Chapter" into "Chapitre". The only way to go, what I found out, is to close the app, change the OSX Lion system language, log out, re-open iBooks Author and start a new book: opening an English book  in the French version of iBooks Author will not change automatically the language in the workflow.
Does anybody has a trick to edit the words "chapter" and "section"?
    Best regards,
    Mauro

    Hi KT,
Thank you, but it's still in english.
I changed to "only number", then wrote the word "chapter" in french or italian or german before the number, then deleted the preview on the iPad and made a new preview, I still have the same result: the word "chapter" is still in the language of the app.
To be clear: I am writing a text using iBooks Author in italian. I have to translate the same text in french, the fastest way would be to rework the italian version (I already have all the multimedia stuff inside). I changed the italian word "Capitolo" (chapter) to the french one "Chapitre" (using the advices of AodhFFXI and K T). And for the first slide of the chapter that's fine.
But if I "close down" the first chapter slide or if I click on the top left botton to go to the chapter TOC, there I still have the word in italian, even if the word has been deleted in the layout:

    Sorry, I misunderstood.
You are correct -- it does not work as expected in CS3 either. This one-line javascript
    app.activeDocument.sections.add(app.activeWindow.activePage);
works, but only if you start at the end of a document and go backwards. For some reason, I cannot insert a new section after an existing one (not counting the very first).

  • TOC and text flow bug?

I have a TOC that spans about 5 pages (or should).  I've created the TOC and shift click insert it, it then place 2 1/2 pages (about 50% of the total) and then a preflight error is displayed regarding overflow text. Clicking it indicates the problem to be located 2 pages after where the TOC stopped (at only 50% inserted/displayed), and the page in between the last page of the half-placed/displayed TOC and the preflight error message, both are blank.
    For example:
    Section 1
    i - TOC page 1 placed (w/shift click)
ii - TOC page 2 (flowed)
iii - TOC page 3 (flowed, but stopped at half page and only 50% of total TOC)
    iv - Blank page
v - Blank page - preflight error messge refers to this page
On a side note: how to see/determine quickly that a page/spread has content? When I trash a page in the Page palette, a confirmation delete message displaying indicating the page has content.
    Thx

    Regarding:
    From my first/intial post:
When I trash a page in the Page palette, a confirmation delete  message displaying indicating the page has content.
    And you wrote:
"t's also possible you've got hidden objects on a page you want to  delete, but that usually would be less likely than a page number."
While searching for an explanation of this mysteriously missing last page from my other concurrent post, in opening a previous document version, I saw many additional pages at the end of the section, apprx. 5 addtional - all blank with excpetion to the master number marker and a text frame (which I assume were placed for the multiple repeated TOC inserstions). So I began deleting those (for "fun"), beginning with the last, first, and noticed with each delete by trashcan icon, there was no similar confirmation message as was present higher up in the section when deleting the TOC pages, until the third, forth and fifth from last (intial) pages (as they decrement with each deletion etc.), then the confirmation delete message appeared. I undid the previous deleltions with Cntrl Z, and compared each page looking at the layout etc. (as you suggested), and there is no difference at least visually and object-wise (as displayed) between any of them. So then, why would two (the last two) delete with no content message, and the remaining three have the content message...

  • TOC and text objects

    Hello,
I am having trouble with my Table of Contents. I have a 140 page doc with approximately 70 sections (some sections are a single page, while others are many pages). Each section has a different first page. In this first page I used a text object to hold the section title and subtitle. I did this to place the title over the header area. Everything had worked out fine until I went to create the Table of Contents. It says that the styles Section Title and Section Sub-Title have not been used in the document! Obviously they have, but every occurance is in a text block (object). Is there a way to make the TOC engine see these styles? Is there another way to place text over the header area on section first pages? Any help is much appreciated.

    Hello Christopher,
you can use a work-around. Insert the headers, subheader, etc. you want to use in your TOC in the main text are of the title pages (this is the only way you will get them into the TOC) and adjust them as a 1pt and 100% transparent text (or tweak the header texts in other ways to make them invisible). Now you can see them in the TOC. And try to place the headers etc. near the top of the title pages so the link in the TOCs will jump to the top of the title pages.
I hope this helps you to get what you want. If you need further help with this, a better description of the title page layout will be helpful.

Quicktime Pro can't edit MPEG-1 or 2 videos. You need something like MPEG-Streamclip a free program to be able to edit these type of videos.

  • In and out markers

Is it just me or is the online help manual not always that helpful?  When splittling clips in says to insert in and out markers but it does not really tell you how.
I found them in the clip drop down menu but they are grayed out.  I want to be able to add back a few frames if needed when editing a video.  I used to use pinacle studio and you could just drag the end of any clip to restore frames.
    Michael

There are several ways to add In & Out Points (not ever heard them called "markers") in a Clip.
One way is to Dbl-click on the Clip in the Project Panel. This will Open the Clip in the Source Monitor. There, you can use the In & Out Poiints (maybe these are the "markers" referred to), in the Source Monitor. When done, drag the Clip from the Source Monitor to the Timeline. This creates an Instance of that Clip. You can have unlimited Instances, and they can all have different In & Out Ponts.
Another way to do this is to drag the Clip from the Project Panel to the Timeline. At the Head of the Clip, click-drag to set the In Point. Now, click-drag on the Tail, to set the Out Point.
A variation of the above is to drag the Clip to the Timeline, then use the Scissors/Razor Tool (or Ctrl-K, with the CTI where you want to Cut) to Cut the Clip. Separate it, as is required. Then Rt-click on all sections to be removed, and choose Delete and Close Gaps.
Remember, your original AV file is NOT harmed, or changed in any way. You are only writing instructions to the Project file, PREL, telling it what to do, when you go to output the Timeline. Don't worry about "cutting" Frames out, as they are not really gone. You can click-drag on a Head, or Tail, to get them back again.
Now, when setting In & Out Points, if you are using Transitions, see this ARTICLE, as you WILL want to leave adequate Handles.
    Good luck, and happy editing,
    Hunt
