TOC (table of contents) Formatting/Leader Tab Problems

BACKGROUND
I have found it impossible to format TOCs with leader tabs as I've seen the procedure outlined in numerous forum posts, books, and elswehere. I am an intermediate FrameMaker user running FM 9 on Windows XP Pro. I run the same setup on a home and office machine with the same problem.
I am in the process of migrating very large volumes of our company's documentation from LaTek to FM and this issue is proving to be insurmountable.I need to have complete control over this process, instead of "making do" with the default TOC.
I have spent three days studying every nuance of the issue, which usually leads me to some insight or pattern that lets me solve the problem, or at least share some clue on the forums. However, in this case, FM either doesn't work as its supposed to or it implements my changes in a seemingly arbitrary manner. So I'm not sure if this is a bug or a user error. I've also experienced the occasional crash of FM during all this work, oftentimes this is preceded by the Paragraph Designer window freezing up and refusing to change views within the window (i.e. basic, default font, etc.).
THE PROBLEM
More specifically, I've learned to manage general formatting with the building blocks on the "reference page", but the leader tabs I use for the page numbers almost never propogate, unless I use the sample TOC included with FM.
I am certain they are properly formatted, I've even copied examples directly from files that I know work (FM sample files).
When I implement the process manually, I insert the tab between the building blocks (no spaces), set a right flush tab, double click and choose tab leader option. Then I go to "body page" view, save the document, and regenerate the TOC. Usually nothing happens. Ocassionally, after regenerating several times or creating a fresh TOC, some of the changes magically propogate.
I have even tried importing the format of another TOC, which only seems to work randomly. Mostly not.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Douglas

Thanks for your quick responses, as well as your other suggestions for my project.
I am running FM 9.0p230. I tried upgrading to 9.0.3 when I began encountering this problem, but received an error message telling me I was running the wrong version of FM. If any one is familiar with this error message and can mention the fix before I delive into that problem, it is also appreciated.
I have attached the TOC. I'm not sure how/if this can be used to help me troubleshoot, so please let me know. I am new to the forums and the development side of FM.
I did "update all" on the paragraphs tags in question. If you look in the body view of this page with text symbols turned on, you can see the symbols for the second tab stops I have placed between the text and page number. That informatoin also appears in the Paragraph Designer. Both of those things add to my confusion on this matter, because that would seem to indicate I have globally applied the paragraph tags correctly, right?
If you go to the reference page, you will see my treatment of the building blocks.
Thanks again in advance for help,
Douglas

  • Table of Contents formatting issue

Table of Contents will not format properly when I change document margins.  The TOC looked great until I had to adjust my left margin to 2inches for printing purposes.  Now the page numbers are only a couple of spaces from each header, and it looks really bad.  Is there an easy fix, so that I can adjust margins without screwing up the TOC formatting?
    Thanks!

    Thanks Jerrold,
I have certianly considered this an option if I can't get this resolved before I have to turn in my paper.
I bought Pages to write my thesis, espcially since I have to include a lot of capitoned images.  I expected an Apple program to run smoothly and be intuitive, but it has been buggy at times, freezing up, and issues like the wacky TOC formatting from changing the margin size don't make sense.
    Thanks again for your time.

when creating a book in epm workspace, v11, is there a way to format the table of contents such that it uses aliases for versions and divisions? seems simple enough, but i can't find a setting switch

As far as I know, FR and Workspace are pretty limited when it comes to formatting books... Sorry!

  • Table of Contents Formatting

My TOC appears in the following format: Active Directory 5
I would like for the page numbers to be right justified:
    Active Directory...........................................................5
Anyone know how to do this? Please email here and at: [email protected]
    Thanks.

    Hi, Reggie:
    Regarding Tim's and Monica's suggestions:
To avoid right-aligned tab positioning problems resulting from the reference page text frame being narrower than the body page text frame, I always set the right-aligned tab-stop position (and other TOC paragraph-format properties) by working on the TOC body page. I manually insert a Tab character in a TOC entry, between the text and the page number, to move the page number to the right-aligned tab stop. When the position and other properties are right, I Update All, to lock in the format. Then, on the reference page, I insert a tab character in the paragraph prototype line, between the entry building blocks and the <$pagenum> building block, save the TOC, and regenerate it from its source file or book, to verify the operation.
I've avoided using the \t symbol, for the tab character, in the paragraph prototypes on the reference page because \t doesn't push the text to the tab stop as a true tab does. The tab character gives a better representation of the tab position, even though the building blocks aren't accurate representations of the width of the entry text or page number.

  • Format tab leader in table of contents

I have a table of contents that uses tab leaders. There are two levels of header in the table of contents. One is bolded (major headers) and one is not (minor headers). The page numbers are not bold for any entry. For example:
    Major Header.................1
    Minor Header...........2
Apparently if you make the header text bold, the tab leader is bold too. This means that the major headers have bolded tab leaders, and the minor headers have regular tab leaders. This makes them appear uneven. I would like to use regular, unbolded leaders for all entries, but I don't know how to modify the leader formatting without affecting the header text.

You can override the heading style setting.
In the major headers, type a space at the end of the text and before the tab leader begins.
Select all of the leader and the text/nmber at the end of that line.
    Toggle Bold to Off.
If your header levels use different type sizes, the leaders will still look different. You can also use the Size control in the format bar to match the size of the leader to that of the minor header.
Not thoroughly checked. You may find this unstable in use, particularly if the content in this is edited.

    Barry

  • Creating a Table of Content (toc)

    Hi
I am very new with Output designer, so please dont mind if it is a silly question.
I have to create a PDF report which has around 15-20 sections. I need a toc (table of content) at first page and at the specified position with page number for each section.
All the sections has some header and detail subforms, so pagenumber is not known at the begining for each sections. I am using xml file as the data file.
So can i use JFPREAMBLE to get the page number for different subforms, and write that on to the toc subform,
i did lot of mind storming but not able to resolve my problem, please help.
    thanks and regards

    Hello,
I was able to create a TOC for a recent customer in the UK.
Took a lot of work, but it worked.
You will have to create a TDF to get the data that you require to be on the TOC, but this is quite easy. The best way is to get the TDF to output the result as a seperate file, and then get the orginal data to call the file as the first thing that you do by using the ^file command
If you would like an example please drop me a line at [email protected]

  • Проблема с оглавлением/The problem with the table of contents

Please tell me how to fix it?

Courtesy of Google I can translate for you in hopes someone else will assist you, Nikita.  There are many experienced Pages users here.
Hello, I use Pages 5.5.2 and when creating a table of contents I have a problem: If you put a filter on the title, and not to use everything as suggested in the beginning, the hyperlinks in the numbering update astray.
For example: Title 1 page 1
                        Heading 2, page 2
                        Heading 3 Page 3
                        Heading 1 Page 4
                        Heading 2, page 5
                        Title 3 Page 6
                        Heading 1 Page 7
                        Heading 2 Page 8
                        Heading 3 Page 9
this is the original version, which requires formatting, so it works, but if you filter out unneeded heading styles, the result will be:
                        Heading 1 Page 1 - when you send a page 1
Heading 1 Page 4 - when you send to the page 2
                        Heading 1 Page 9 - when you send a page 3
Please tell me how to fix it?

  • Table of Contents in PDF Export

There are normally three ways to create a TOC (Table of Contents). Which did you try to use?
    1) Bookmarks: Most applications and non-graphic only devices will interpret a list of bookmarks as a TOC if exported properly as part of the PDF file. Unfortunately, Pages does not appear to export this data as part of the file export or does so in such a way that the bookmarks are not recognized by other applications/devices including Apple's own Preview. If this is what you are trying to do, you would need to use a secondary application to re-bookmark your content. (NOTE: Don't use Preview for this as its bookmarks are also not recognized by other applications/device and only work when using Preview as the reader.)
    2) Pages "Insert TOC" Option: This option should produce a a working TOC that will work on non-graphic only devices and/or applications that allow touch, stylus, cursor movement, etc to highlight/activate internal/external links. This form of active annotation has the advantage of being able to update and display page references automatically as you create the document. If this is what you tried to do and it didn't work, the most frequent problem is a failure on the part of the user to tag the text on the page you want included in the TOC with one of the "header" tags (i.e., h1 thru h6). Properly tagging your text will allow the selected text to be automatically added to your TOC along with the page number on which the text is tagged if desired. Further, tagging the text allows you to redefine the style of that tag at any time you wish and apply the change to all other text similarly tagged.
    3) Manual Links: The third option is highlight selected text in your document and add it manually to your bookmark list. Then you would select the text (either on a manually created TOC page or anywhere else in your document) and link it manually to one of your bookmark entries. As you can see, this process can be much more time consuming but should work under the same conditions mentioned above regarding the auto-generated TOC. This option does not require tagging of the content nor does it prohibit it.

  • Table of Contents Slider Issues

I have been told by iBooks that on my iBook that I have published that when you look at The TOC (Table of Contents) in landscape mode the slider either doesn't move or it goes back to the first page (copyright page).  Any ideas how I solve this?

    Hi there
Good on ya for reporting. It's fine to sound disgusted. If
you don't tell Adobe they will never know and will blissfully
assume that everyone is pleased as punch with the changes.
Personally, because the TOC functionality was so limiting in
version 3 I just avoided it. As a result, I tended to largely
ignore it in the beta. What I did see seemed like a vast
    improvement.
Keep in mind that a future release may also be an interim
update before a new major release.
    Cheers... Rick

If you forgot the database password here is the way that you can change it.

  • No index in my Table of Contents

Framemaker 9 > Table of Contents
My book includes a TOC (table of contents) and IOM (index) file.
All of the chapters in my book have a chapter title tagged to the "Title" tag.  The last "chapter" in my book is the IOM file.  In the IOM file, I have a "Title" tag, with the value of "Index".
When I generate my TOC, all of the chapter titles in my book are listed, however, the Index does not get included in the TOC, even though I have the "Title" tag included in my TOC setup (see below).
So how do I get the Index to appear in the table of contents?
    Thanks.
    Sam

    >> Make sure that the first line of the index file has the string "Index"
    >> with the Title paratag applied to that line.
Does it make any difference if this task has alread been done in the Master page "First"?  I already had the first line in the "First" Master Page associated with a Title paragraph tag, containing value "Index".  See snapshot below:

  • IBooks Author strips tab stops from Table of Contents

Tab stops that are generated from section names are stripped from published iBooks Author files.   When I click on Table of Contents in iBooks Author, I can see it exactly like it should be.  Please see the screenshot that I have uploaded tabs.jpg.
Please note the Tab stops of the inspector that are in the screenshot.  It shows clearly that I have made a number of tab stops and how it should be displayed. However, please download the following file to see how the tab stops are stripped from the .ibooks file that is created when I publish it:

The iBA Help has info on: table of contents
    Which includes:
Each book comes with a table of contents that is updated automatically. You can view the table of contents at any time by selecting Table of Contents in the sidebar. The table of contents includes a default set of items, but you can change which items appear. A table of contents can include:
Chapter and section titles: All chapter and section titles are included in the table of contents by default. If you remove a section from the table of contents, all other sections that use the same layout are removed as well.
Text that uses specified paragraph styles: By default, the table of contents includes all paragraphs in the book that use the Heading 1 and Heading 2 style, but you can include whichever styles you like. Paragraph styles appear in the table of contents only in portrait orientation. See Format text using styles.
The way the table of contents looks depends on the current page orientation. In landscape orientation (shown below), each chapter has its own contents page, with navigation buttons at the bottom. In portrait orientation, the entire book’s table of contents is visible as an expandable list.
Add or remove items in the table of contents
If the Document inspector isn’t open, click Inspector in the toolbar and click the Document Inspector button.
    Click the TOC button.
Do either or both of the following:
To add an item: Click the Add pop-up menu , choose Add Paragraph Style, and choose an option from the submenu.
To remove an item: Select the item you want to remove and click the Delete button .

  • Problem with Sections and Table of Contents

I have just purchased pages. Both my iMac and MacBook have Lion. I do not have the "sections" button on the toolbar. When I open the "inspector" and try to insert a Table of Contents, the "paragraph styles" pane is empty. How can I correct these problems as I would like to use pages for a family story

You have started your document with a Page Layout template. TOC doesn't work with text boxes. You need to use a Word Processing document and have the text in the main text layer.
In the New from Template Chooser you can see the types in the left side bar.

You can download the trial version (http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-downloads.html) to convert the PDF back to WORD if you do not have the original. The conversion may not be perfect, but it is typically better than starting from scratch. You may be lucky and get a good result. You might check the settings (in the save screen) to try retain format versus retain text flow. The format version can be a pain to edit since it creates a bunch of text boxes. The flow version may require you to reformat in WORD, but you likely would want to do that anyway.

  • Span columns problem with Table of Contents order

    Hello,
I'm having a strange issue with headings that span columns and Table of contents order. My document has a heading paragraph in a coloured box, which is then inserted in-line into a 2-column text box. The paragraph style for the box (set to in-line) is set to span all columns, so that the 2-columned text doesn't get messed up.
When I create a table of contents, the Heading style that is inside the coloured box is being picked up fine, but even though it is inserted before the headings below it, it is showing up after the level 2 headings, instead of before.
I have confirmed that the insertion of the blue bar is before the text below it, as when I remove the span columns option, the TOC works as it is supposed to. Is this a bug?

Hi there, thanks for the reply.
The only way I could move the inline box to the left was to make a custom anchor and change the X value, this did not affect the TOC unfortunately. I also checked the location of the invisible marker indicating the location of the inline text box, and it is definitely before the heading that follows. I confirmed this by removing the span columns option for that paragraph, and the TOC displayed properly after doing that, meaning there is likely some problem with the span columns option not properly recognizing the order of content.
