The image manipulation stuff in ACR 4.1 that will be in Lightroom look good, though...

    This has worked fine with MobileMe with only a couple of minor glitches in the past.
    Any experience doing this the "right" way?

  • Capture vs. Content Sharpening in Lightroom and ACR

    Hi,
    I have a question regarding sharpening in Lightroom and ACR. In the information I have read, many authors point out that Lightroom and ACR's detail panel is optimized to provide control over capture sharpening. In a post that I read recently by Jeff Schewe, he clarified that and said that we are really sharpening for both capture and content with the detail panel in Lightroom.
    That is confusing to me because after reading Bruce Fraser's book on sharpening, capture and content sharpening were treated as two different processes. If I understood correctly capture sharpening for digital captures was based on the characteristics of the camera and the file size of the image, with larger megapixel files receiving a smaller radius. In addition, I read that the radius in content sharpening is dictated by the dominant characteristics of the subject matter being sharpened, with high frequency subject matter receiving a smaller radius and low frequency receiving a higher radius.
    The reason I am confused is that it appears that capture and content sharpening for the same digital capture can at times be quite different. For example, I believe that the book suggests a radius for an 11 megapixel capture of .4. If the image content calls for a sharpening radius of 1.3, what do I do? In Lightroom/ACR I can only choose 1 radius.
    In all the reading I have done regarding the proper use of Lightroom and ACR, it suggest that you should use a radius that is suited to the image content. So it appears that we are that we are being encouraged to perform content sharpening only with Lightroom and ACR. What happened to the "capture" sharpening portion of the process?
    Since Lightroom and ACR are capable of recognizing the camera make and model as well as the file size, are they applying capture sharpening behind the scenes that is tailored to that specific camera and file. If not, then how are we achieving both capture and content sharpening in the same operation?
    Sharpening for both capture and content in one pass would seem to conflict with some of the basic concepts elaborated on in Bruce Fraser's book. I am assuming that since Lightroom is using Photokit Sharpener routines, that they have accounted for the capture portion of the sharpening, but I don't see that stated explicitly anywhere in anything that I have read. If they have, I say kudos to everyone involved as that would be great. I'm just looking for a clearer understanding of what's happening.
    If anyone can shed some light on this topic I would be very appreciative.
    Thanks,
    John Arnold

    The answer is that the detail section crosses over into creative territory and is not strictly "capture sharpening," although that is what is mostly meant to do.
    Following the ultimate logic of the "sharpening workflow" might make you conclude that Capture sharpening and output sharpening are purely scientific steps where you should not make ANY creative decision at all and that creative decisions are only to be made in the creative sharpening step. In the real world, there are creative decisions and decisions determined by the content matter that enter into the capture step too just like in the output step. You might like extra-crunchy prints for example, but somebody else might prefer softer prints making you approach the output sharpening with a creative intent. The sharpening workflow was probably (Jeff will know more about the history) more of an attempt to arrive at a more rational way of approaching the process and to provide a guideline. It is probably not meant to rigidly separate the workflow up in defined steps where in the 1st step you're not allowed to think or look at the image, in the second step you can go completely wild, and in the last step you have to close your eyes again. The goal was probably to make the photographer realize that the different steps have a different purpose. Not to make you turn off your creative genius or to treat the process like a black box.
    My approach to this, inspired in some part by Jeff's many posts on this, is to make the image look good at 1:1 using the detail tool in Lightroom/ACR. This is inherently driven by content of course as you use visual feedback. If your image is large swaths of plain color separated by sharp transitions with little structure, you probably do not want a high setting on the detail slider as you might induce halos and you probably want to use some masking. Conversely, if you shoot brick architecture, a high detail value might look good. If you shot at high ISO, you might need a different approach again to not blow up noise. Also, portraits might need a different approach. After the 1:1 optimization, I sometimes selectively sharpen (or blur!) parts of the image (rare but can be effective - example would be people's eyes). Then for the output step I use appropriate output sharpening for the medium according to my taste. You see that this is not rigidly following the workflow, but still is in the spirit.

  • LR 4.2RC and ACR 7.2 RC won't read SONY RX 100 ARW files

    I was at a wedding yesterday and had two cameras with me - a Nikon D800 and my little SONY RX 100.  I was using an Eye-Fi Pro card for the Sony.  I'm uninterested in the Wi-Fi capabilities when I'm away from home, but like the camera to upload pictures when I'm close to my big processing machine.  Long story short.  This was the first time I've used the LR 4.2RC and ACR 7.2RC with the Sony RX 100.  I plugged the card into both the regular Eye-Fi USB reader, and into my Hoodman USB 3.0 reader.  Of course, LR doesn't like the Eye-Fi reader, but it loves the Hoodman.  Finally, it recognized the Hoodman and the Eye-Fi card.  I have previews set to minimal and I was attempting to import all the raw (ARW) files into Lightroom.  When the initial previews come up as I start the import process, it shows about 1/3 of the previews and then tells me it can't read the rest, including MP4 files.  When I actually begin the import, it simply times out and reports that it was unable to import ANY of the ARW files, nor the MP4 files.  I have no trouble reading 63 files into Raw Photo Processor so I know there is nothing wrong with any of the files.  I can only conclude that there is something wrong with LR 4.2 and/or ACR 7.2.
    Anyone else reporting this problem?  I'm puzzled because this is the ONLY time I have ever had trouble importing files from supported cameras.
    Thanks for feedback.

    Well.  After some experimentation, I discovered what the problem seems to be.  For reasons completely opaque to me, Lightroom expects not only that the Eye-Fi card will be read from its own reader, but it also expects that the Eye-Fi helper application be installed and running.  Of course, this means that I end up with duplicate copies of every file - once to the Eye Fi directory, and again to the appropriate Lightroom Folder on a completely different set of drives.   I guess the conclusion I can draw from this is that without the helper application, the Eye Fi card is dumb and the images only partly visibible.  The Eye-Fi helper can import the .ARW files, but it doesn't display them because Apple hasn't updated its camera list to include the RX100.  Until they do, I think I'll just use regular cards and consign the Eye-Fi card to the hall of unhelpful cards.  Yikes, the darned thing is as expensive as the Lightroom upgrade.
    Sigh.

  • Question about open and close of MySqlConnection

    hi
        i'd like to ask a question.
      MySqlConnection connection = newMySqlConnection(stringConnection);
                    MySqlCommand cmd = connection.CreateCommand();
                    connection.Open(); and i have a try catch. accoding to your opinion, i should put  connection.Close() in the block of try,or outside of block of try? according to you,if i open the connection and do not close,is it bad?or i open 2 times(using different istancse,like connection1 and connecton2),is it ok? thank u very muchbest regardsmartin

    This code will work in tests. But it will propably fail in a production environment. You don't even close the connection and that is bad enough. This is how you should never,
    EVER work with disposeable objects!
    try
    MySqlConnection connectionLev = newMySqlConnection("server=P30LSIMUL;user id=root;database=cncp20l");
    MySqlCommand cmd = connectionLev.CreateCommand();
    connectionLev.Open();
    Console.WriteLine("OK");
    catch (Exception ex)
    Console.WriteLine(ex.Message);
    try
    MySqlConnection connectionLev = newMySqlConnection("server=P30LSIMUL;user id=root;database=cncp20l");
    MySqlCommand cmd = connectionLev.CreateCommand();
    connectionLev.Open();
    Console.WriteLine("OK");
    catch (Exception ex)
    Console.WriteLine(ex.Message);
    If code like that runs in any production environment, you are about to get fired.
    From a catapult.
    SqlConnections implement Finalize so when the GC does collect them, they will be properly closed. That can be anywhere between "milisccond the reference vanishes" and "the programm is closed after 100 years of the computer running without
    a hitch and reboot."
    Put one of those blocks (or both) into a loop that runs 100 times and you will run out of avalible SQL conenctions.
    Since you alraedy have a try...catch block, just use the construct that Magnus showed you:
    Put the variable outside of the try (so finalize can access it). Check for null (in case an exception happened before/during the creation, not during the use of it) then Dispose.
    Note that finalize is even run after the function it is contained in returns (about the only code that can still run then). And that you should always log/expose ex.ToString(), never only the message (that one contains only 5% of the information, the otehr
    95% are much more important).

  • Cost transfer posting within Training and event management

    Dear experts!
    Now, I'm getting some issues about transfer posting in Training and event management.
    - The first, I create business event.
    - Second, I posted cost of business event to CO.
    when I posted to CO, I only want to give cost of business event to one cost center. But the system require I have two cost center:
              + Sender cost center
              + Receive cost center.
    Really, I want to post cost of business event to Receive cost center.
    How do I have to do?
    Help me, Please!
    Best regards, Huy

    Hi huy daongoc ,
    you need to find out from the FICO guys.
    If the sender cost center and the receiver cost center is same.  then give both records.  They will help you out.
    I think Sender cost center means the cost center under which the training is organised.
    Receiving cost center means the persons who are all receiving the training, those persons cost center.
    Regards

  • Need help with Olympus E-M1 and ACR 8.3 Results

    Hi:
    1.  I'm fairly familiar with photoshop and ACR, but definitely not an expert.   I'm also very familiar with the Olympus RAW files since the E-5 (I've owned the E-5, E-M5 and several Pens);  I now recently purchased the E-M1 and I've been having problems getting decent images out of the RAW files (compared to the prior Olympus RAW files).
    2.  Problem:  it just "feels" that the overall tone curve is more abrupt, especially in the highlights.    With the prior Olympus RAW files, the transition from moving the exposure slider to the right and then getting blown out highlights was more gradual;   there just seems to be an overt decrease in "headroom" when dealing with highlights in the E-M1 RAW files.   I know this makes no sense in that the dynamic range is supposed to be greater with this camera compared to the prior ones.
    3.  Problem:  In relation to the above issue, it also seems that the highlight slider is not as specific as it used to be in that when I move it to the left, more of the histogram seems to be affected as opposed to the bright / highlight region.   It now seems to  basically counteract any adjustments made to the exposure.   Again, this may be my imagination but it just feels this way.
    4.  Problem: In relation to the above issue, the other strange observation I've had is that although the histogram of the image shows no clipping, the image may have very bright areas with almost imperceptible detail;   when I click on it and view that data point within curves, it shows it to be well below 255.    In my lame flower shot example (it's not a good example but I couldn't find anything else right now), I would have guessed that in the brighest petal area, that it would be something like 250, but it's only 220.   But when I zoom in, there's really no texure or detail or data.
    5.  The above issue in re: highlight rendering and control may or may not be related but it's the first time, I've been having issues and I've never had such problems with either ACR or prior Olympus cameras and thus I'm wondering if this is some issue with how ACR interprets the E-M1 file.  I did do some comparison with Capture One 7 and that does a definitely better job of highlight recovery in that it seems to more preferentially target just the highlights and definitely does a better job with color rendition.   I have Olympus Viewer 3, but it's so slow and lame, that I haven't done much testing with it.   Any thoughts and advice much much appreciated.

    Also, you might want to upload your raw file, a full-size JPG of what you posted, above, and an example from C1 to www.dropbox.com and post a public link, here, for others to experiment with.

  • Best avenue to file complaints about bill and have them resolved

    I have been a customer since before 2005 and went with Ntelos in November, I called the night I was at Ntelos to ask Verizon what my contract buy outs were and I was given the prices. The representative tried to offer me whatever promotions she could offer (there wasn't many) and I declined service (there she should have took the initiative to ask about disconnecting). Since my bf opted to keep his number his phone disconnected automatically. I was told my Verizon phone would cycle off within 24 - 48 hours by the Ntelos rep. That was not the case so I called verizon to ensure my phone would disconnect and they told it would at the end of the billing cycle (december 20) which makes sense. I understand I would be responsible for the November - December. Anyways, December 20th rolls around and mind you I've called already to ensure it will take place and it doesn't. I phone in and come to find out the person who took my orders didn't complete the disconnection and now I have to wait until January 20th for it to cycle off and I can finally pay my bill! Well get this in my November - December bill they've charged me $51 for Monthly access (I have a work discount) and $49.99 for insurance and smartphone access for 12/21 - 1/20 and won't refund my $51 as they say that I called out on the phone. I turned the phone on and had voicemails that I think I checked around the time period that they are mentioning (1 day) and that data was used (1 day) I had no outbound calls after December 11th my birthday. Because there are no comments in my account (that I specifically asked them to make) my phone should have been disconnected when I had called in the first of December... really!?! The phone should have been turned off regardless and it was one day out of 30 seriously? I mean the phone has been turned off this whole time and literally only checked to make sure Verizon did their job. I CAN'T HELP IT YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO YOUR JOB, I PUT THE EFFORT IN MULTIPLE TIMES TO LET YOU KNOW MY PHONE NEEDED TO BE DISCONNECTED YOU SHOULD HAVE KEPT RECORD OF IT!!! What really heats me up is that I was told a supervisor would give me a call back after they got out of a meeting and I have not rec'd a call back yet. VERIZON Reps/Supervisors your customers are the reason why you have get a paycheck, I suggest you start treating them a little better. You can't seriously tell me giving me back my $51 for service I DID NOT USE (except according to you for one day you can't even give me details about?) is really going to hurt your pockets. I've been jerked around by your reps for the last 2 months as one told me my contracts were up in January and I shouldn't' be charged for disconnection fees at all, she credited me those termination fees but they later got rejected (after she said her supervisor approved while I was on hold) and NO ONE HAD THE COURTESY TO NOTIFY ME!
    I've worked in customer service before and I'll be first to tell you that your reps are not trained very well and you have horrible ethic! You should not charge your customers for an error that was your fault; especially since it was your reps that I asked specifically to note my account and didn't (this isn't my first rodeo with you all, it should be standard procedure to give your reps time to comment before throwing them into another phone call). I'm not doing this for my health here, that $51 could buy diapers and baby food for my daughter and you are crazy if you think I'm going to let it slip through my fingers to line your pockets. I will keep escalating it until you do something about it and I don't care that you already gave me an inconvenience credit I deserve that and my $51 so don't try to justify it that way! This has been way more than an inconvenience, so don't worry I'll inconvenience you as well!

    With my new provider I am only using the chat function to settle anything with them so I can save the conversations I've had with them (not that I've had any issues thus far). It should be standard procedure for them to comment your account while they are on the phone with you before hanging up. I should have been annoying and asked them to read back their comments (hindsight ugh!).  I'm sorry that you are having to deal with this as well, just know you are not the only one receiving horrible customer service. I'll share with you what I wrote on their Facebook page. They really should take some accountability for their actions and have better follow up on resolving issues (or train their representatives better). I can't stand having to talk to another person time and time again explaining the same thing i just explained to 3 people before them.
    Almost immediately, I received some attention after posting this:
    Dear Verizon,
    I am appalled, especially after reading your credo, that you are refusing to credit back money that is owed to me because your representatives didn't take the necessary time that they should have to comment (after I specifically asked) in my account after I diligently called in multiple times to ensure that my disconnection took place when it was scheduled to and was told that it would (an ongoing issue since the beginning of December). Come to find out that the representatives I spoke with prior to December 20th didn't do their jobs correctly by not entering the disconnection orders in. "Verizon Credo- a set of principles that describes our culture of integrity, respect, performance excellence and accountability. The Credo is a blueprint that directs us to live up to the highest standards possible when serving our customers, shareowners, communities and each other." Let me school you on something here because it appears that you just put that mission statement up on your website 'cause it sounds good, you certainly do not follow through! Accountability: Noun - the quality or state of being accountable; especially an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one's actions (i.e. public officials lacking accountability). It doesn't matter that you cannot find any proof in my statements it doesn't change the fact that it happened and I am not a liar. I seriously wouldn't exhaust this must effort had I been lying. I'll take this a step further and reference your statement "we focus outward on the customer, not inward. We make it easy for customers to do business with us, by listening, anticipating and responding to their needs." First of all, when I made my initial call to you all asking what my contract buyout prices were and your rep tried to offer me promotions (or lack there of) to keep me as a customer and I declined she should have "anticipated" my need for disconnection. I shouldn't have had to jump through so many hoops to get my service disconnected from you all and pay my final bill. It's not my fault that your representatives weren't trained well enough to correctly put through disconnection orders. Based on my interactions with your customer service I could see where people would disconnect their services regularly!!!!! You are not making it easy for me to severe ties with you and conduct BUSINESS and you are not responding to my NEEDS. I think you forget that I could be a potential customer in the future. If it's one thing I learned from my Communications Degree is that negative feedback will reach more consumers vs. positive feedback of a company and how they handle their business. I have 1,000 plus facebook friends and twitter followers so I'm pretty sure my negative experience could reach quite a few people! You say you have integrity? How is it moral uprightness to charge me for a whole month of service (regardless if the phone was turned on once) for a billing period that shouldn't have existed if your customer service reps did their job correctly? I suggest that you all take a good look at the way you are treating your current customers because we are the reason you get a paycheck! You should make your customers a priority especially if they've been with you for 10 + years regardless if they are disconnecting service or not! How about following through, taking ACCOUNTABILITY and having that supervisor representative call me back from my phone conversation last night like I am a priority (how every customer should be treated) and helping me get the money that I am owed, regardless if the phone had been turned on for a short period (your rep couldn't even tell me what numbers I supposedly called - exactly the phone has been off since December 20th if not before unless turned on to confirm disconnection)! Oh but let me guess did you all forget to put that in my account comments as well? Probably like there is no mention of the formal complaint I filed against some of your representatives that there was supposedly no ticket number for. I thought I was going to regret leaving Verizon for another provider but it turns out that I only wish I would have left sooner and actually gone to a authorized dealer/ Verizon Store to process my disconnection because your customer service line is a joke!

  • Quick Question About Ringtones and iPhone

    I've looked through the discussions and could not find my answer. If you know of a discussion already posted please refer me to that.
    Question: After buying a song from iTunes is there a statute of limitations governing the song's ability to create a ringtone?
    None of the songs that I bought before my iPhone can be made into ringtones and songs that I bought a few days ago, which initially I could make into a ringtone, but did not, now can no longer be made into a ringtone.
    Also, is there any program besides iTunes that can be used to create ringtones from any song?
    Thank you for any and all help.

    No there is not a time limit that I know of. The bell has disappeared on mine too. Have you clicked Store>create ringtone?

  • Problem with JPGs Downlaoded with Nikon Transfer - Can't Apply Develop Settings in Bridge CS4 and ACR 5.3 Settings Don't Stick

    I have found what I believe is a "problem" with JPGs downloaded using Nikon Transfer (ver 1.4.1) and processing same in Adobe Bridge CS4 (Develop Settings) and/or Adobe Camera Raw 5.3 (Photoshop CS4 and Elements 6 as hosts).
    Anyone using these programs in their workflow?
    The problem, quite simply, is that neither ACR settings (nor Bridge CS4 Develop Settings) "stick" when applied to JPGs that have been downloaded via Nikon Transfer ver 1.4.1.
    The same images from the same cameras (D300 and D90), downloaded moments later using Nikon's predecessor software PictureProject work just fine in both Bridge and ACR.  Develop Settings appled in Bridge immediately are seen, and JPGs opened in ACR, and settings applied, then "Done" immediately stick and are reflected in Bridge.
    If someone else is processing their JPGs in this manner, please let me know, as I have reported the problem to both Nikon and Adobe, and although I have tested it on two different cameras and two differnt laptops, I would like to get an impartial result as well.
    One other test, the problem does not seem to affect Nikon's RAW (NEF) format files downloaded from a D2x using Nikon Transfer.  More/different test are forthcoming.
    Thanks
    jeff

    Can't say one way or another on that statement about using manufacturers' software.  Since Adobe has to interpret each camera models' RAW format having the latest ACR seems to be the best option.  But if the manufacturers' software is more convenient, and you get the same results then use it.  But it does appear you are not getting what you want, so suggest you try a duplicate test run with images straight from the card reader to Bridge and see if you still have same problems.
    I do know it is widely recommended that using a quality card reader gives you more reliable data than getting the pictures straight from the camera.  Does not seem intuitive, but that has been experience of many.

  • About:config and bold text

    I have noticed that showing ALL bookmarks is very slow.
    I understand that Firebug is sometimes cause for slow behaviour as posted on some notices for applications.
    I like to check why is this and disabled some Ads-on.
    Issue is what is actually about:config and bold text like:
    accessibility.typeaheadfind.flashBar;0
    Is it bold text warning that something is wrong?
    Ref:I have upgraded to new version 9.beta4

    No bold text in about:config means that the value it has modified from you or from a add-on or for a program that related with firefox(flash or anything)......
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Accessibility.typeaheadfind.flashBar
    if you like to read about:config:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config_entries
    probably the browsing some times are slow because as you allready known 9.0 is a beta version, and for the reason you tell us, Firebug.
    thank you

  • About gif and jpg

    who can give me the website about gif and jpg format?
    thanks guy.

    This is a crosspost.
    Chances are that you won't get a resonable response when you do that. Try reading How to Ask Questions the Smart Way. That will give you plenty of pointers on getting reasonable responses.
    The response in your other post is a literal answer to you question, google is your friend.
    For a direct answer, here's the the Jpeg FAQ. If what you are actualling requesting is "how do I use images in Java" take a look at the ImageIcon class, the javax.imageio package and search this forum for examples. You could also check the How to use Icons in the Java Tutorial.

  • About bridge and extreme sloth

    Setup: Running win7-64bit, on i7 with 8GB ram, using tools from the cloud (trial)
    If this is the wrong forum for bridge there seems to be no forum for bridge specifically so posting here because I'm currently using bridge with PR.
    After downloading all the still and videos from days work, (5 videos and some 50+ stills plus the raw formats too), I'm trying to go through them, do some renaming and general organizing prior to loading videos into PR.
    At first I thought the new bridge had no right click functions, since when I attempt to right click an image or series of images nothing happens.  No menu is raised.
    But, finally the right click menu appeared and I was able to batch rename.  But every little chore, renaming, copying to somewhere else and even just moving around I find to be like wading through thick (deep) mud.
    I have PR and Bridge open along with Google earth but no other process is really processing data or doing other heavy lifting except bridge.
    Is 8gb of ram just too puny for the newest adobe tools, or are there steps I can take that will allow bridge to function at something approaching a reasonable speed?

    In the lower right hand corner of Bridge you will see an arrow.  If it is spinning it means it is building the cache.  With CS6 it seems to lock up the application until finished, and seems to take longer than in CS5.  Thumbnails seem to build at the rate of about 1 second for every 30 meg.  So for a 300 meg video file it takes about 10 seconds, at least on my system.  Once the cache is built then things run at a good clip.
    (PS - Processor speed: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q820  @  1.73GHz  1.73GHz)
    I see a pause in actions even after the arrow quits spinning (I guess you meant the lower LEFT side?).
    For example, once the arrow quits, if I click a top menu item (any one of them) I experience a second pause nearly as long as the arrow spin pause, before the menu opens.  Once that has happened then other menu items or the same one are normally fast to respond to a click.
    A further example of what seems to be uneccessary sloth happens if I minimize bridge or focus on a differnt app window such as this browser, then go back to bridge and click a menu item, I see a full 5/6 second pause before the menu is displayed. After having clicked and waited on one menu item, the rest respond normally to a click
    A quick look at what a session might look like:
    Click a directory in folder (or content) view (wait out a 4/6 second pause)
    Once the directory has opened press Ctrl-a to select all images (wait out a 4/6 second pause) click a new directory (wait out a 4/6 second pause) right click to get to `paste' or press Ctrl-v  (wait out a 4/6 second pause).
    Not really a workable flow (at least not for me).
    Curt Y wrote:[...]
    Also check your thumbnals.  I use embedded as they are small and fast.  If you use HQ, and generate 100% preview they can use a lot of disk space and would take longer to build.  Thumbnail options are two squares on 2nd line of tool bar on right hand side.
    Switching between "Always high quality" and "Prefer imbedded" I don't see any noticable change.  But that is on directories with fairly small content, like a mixture of 40 raw and 40 jpg stills at 6000x4000. Something like  1.35 GB of data. The *.jpg are about 10MB and the (raw) *.arw are about 24 MB.
    One really maddening thing I see here, is that when I've been focused on some other app window, then come back to bridge and right click on an image in a open directory, the pause for the right click menu to show up is a full 8 seconds.
    And that right click pause never goes away.  That is, if I right click andwait for the menu, then right click on the next image I have another 4/6 second pause for the menu to appear.

    For some reason if you purge cache with Tools/cache/purge cache for xxx folder they seem to rebuild much faster.
    I don't see any noticable change here following that proceedure.
    Curt Y wrote:
    Bridge is more dependant on processor speed than RAM.
    How much processor speed is requred to not see these nasty pauses?
    On my current working machine, the repeated pausing in bridge has meant that its nearly useless.  Bridge ends up being saved only for mass rename or image processing chores.
