Tool Palette Problem with FCE

Hello, Thanks for everyones help with FCE so far. I have lost my tool palette to the right side of the timeline. How do I return the tool palette? I can see the tool palette in the button list but it majically disappeared from the screen?

Go to the menus and select Window>Tool Palette.
It needs a tick against it.

When I click on tools in my tools palette the other tools (hidden under it) do not flyout so I can select them. Very strange. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you mean click-and-hold or just click?
Anyway you might just use the single-key Shortcuts to select secondary Tools (either hit the letter repeatedly or shift-letter, if Preferences – General – Use Shift Key for Tool Switch is checked).
    Boilerplate-text:
As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems You might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences You’ve changed) by pressing command-alt-shift on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.

Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)

  • Problems with FCE viewing on TV monito

I've used an ADVC-300 converter for several years to monitor and edit my FCE canvas. But today I am not getting real movement on the TV monitor. Just bumpy stills as I click the mouse. I've checked all cables and everything is the same. So what's happening and how do I resolve the problem?

    Hi

    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)

    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    External device’s (hard disk’s)
    • Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.

    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odw_en_GB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • Nvidia tools/Installation problems with Photoshop

Hey guys,so,i have photoshop cs2,i installed nvidia tools, but they wont work, they dont even show up,so i googeled arround, and i read that they only work if the version is in english, now i wanna install photoshop in english again, but no matter how often i install it again(i deleted all file sfrom photoshop and photoshop itself, before i reinstalled)it is ll the time still in german, what should i do?,is there any way to fix that,or is there any possibility to get nvidia tools working in german as well?thank you guys.

    Ramon,
Thanks for the input. However I tried that already with the same results.
Have no problem with Lightroom 2.2 just Photoshop CS3.
Sent Adobe a message with this problem via their support section, however they just closed the case and more or less stated my time has expired. So now I am at a stand still with CS3.
My next option is just do a complete re-install of Leopard as I do have everything backed up via Time Machine.
In the mean time I found a program called Pixelmator that works just fine until I am able find a solution for this problem.

  • Problem with FCE 3.5HD preinstalled on MacPro

I am getting the runaround from Apple's Online Store sales and support team. I received a MacPro preinstalled with FCE 3.5, but they didn;t send the discs. Now I cannot open the app because it requires a serial number for registration. I have made several calls to Sales Support (in Ireland) who tell me it's dealt with by a technical support team (no tel number), they have put me through three times and either I've had the wrong guy, no answer or they say it's an after-sales problem.
I have used Macs for more than 15 years but this level of service has been the worst I've experienced. Basically I've bought FCE and cannot use it. Any similar problems, or suggestions as to actually get the "support" they say they offer but actually don't??

    Maurice,
Even though the software was 'preinstalled' you should have received the installation discs. I would pursue Apple for delivery of the discs. Contact Apple Customer Service, not Sales Support. Use the Warranty contact (phone, email, mailing address) that came with your system.

  • Any known problems with FCE-HD and "Capture Now"  or edits

    I've been working with FCE for almost two years now. I've had the same problem ever since-- The SPINNING PINWHEEL OF DEATH when: playing back edited video from the timeline and the playhead passes over various edit points, usually cuts. Is it a CAPTURE problem, or camcorder RECORD problem, or something else? I use a SONY DCR-TRV38 with firewire; FCE-HD;
Any thoughts on why I get this problem so often, and what I can do to avoid it in the future? should I just switch to Avid or Premier??
    Thanks for any help...
    Shawn

    Hi Shawn.
I don't think there is a "known problem".
I assume your HDs are not more than 75% full or fragmented?
If you have not already done them, try the old chestnuts of Trashing the Preferences and Re-installing FCE.
    1. Make sure you trash all 3 of the Preference Files as detailed in this article:-
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93690
    2. If that does not work then re-install FCE but make sure you delete all the old FCE files first as shown in this link:-
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301182
    Good luck.
    Ian.
PS. When you write in with a problem, remember to give all possible APPROPRIATE details eg.
Computer model and external Hard Drive.
    Operating System.
    FCE version.
    Camera type.
Did the problem suddenly occur or has it NEVER worked?
Have you recently loaded new Software or Upgraded ANY programs, Operating Systems etc.
Have you moved or altered your source files?
Have you captured the clips from a DV camera or an A/D Converter etc.?
Is it Standard or High Definition Video?
What type of files are you using?
Also include details of exactly what you were doing before the problem occurred.
Is your film hours long and filled with numerous transitions and effects etc.?
THIS IS A GENERAL LIST. SOME OF THEM WILL NOT APPLY TO YOU.

  • Transfer video problems with FCE and Quicktime 7.6?

Are there any problems tranferring video with the new Quicktime (7.6)? I stopped downloaded upgrades to Quicktime last year when I could only transfer 5 mins of video at a time with Quicktime 7.3 (or 7.1.3).
Apple makes these upgrades so now I can't use iTunes or new Pages without upgrading Quicktime. However, i've heard there are still problems with digital video transfers etc.

Just for your info: I bought FCE HD3 in 2006, I had Quicktime 7. But when Quicktime 7.1.3 came out a year or so later - that's when I had to go back to using QT 7. Which meant I had to spend several days rebooting the entire system back to what it was when I bought it.
That cost me a lot more than what the Xpress was worth.
But I really do appreciate your advice. It saves me doing the same again. My complaint is, why can't Apple answer these questions themselves? My dealer could not even get an answer.

  • NEW IN THE FORUM - HAVING PROBLEMS WITH FCE

    Hi everyone!
My name is Mauricio and I am having problems in figure out how to use the FCE. I can copy my AVCHD files from my Sony CX100 but once I input it in the time line I can't(or can not find how) edit the frames and also how to mix music tracks with the original sound.
Please, could someone help a FCE beginner???
Thanks a lot for the time and attention.
    Mauricio "Big Mac"

    Welcome aboard Big Mac,
but once I input it in the time line I can't(or can not find how) edit the >frames and also how to mix music tracks with the original sound.
Normally you don't edit in the Timeline.
You move a clip from the Browser to the Viewer.
In the Viewer you select _in and out_ points to define exactly which part of the clip is required. If you don't define in/outs the whole clip will be entered.
Then move the clip to the Timeline. A simple method to do this is drag the clip in Viewer to the Edit Insert (yellow panel) Overlay of the Canvas. This will drop the clip at the playhead point in the Timeline.

  • Problems with FCE loading due to permissions??

OK, I am completely baffled by this and I'm hoping someone can help with this because it's rather annoying.
For the past several weeks, I've been under the assumption that FCE does not work with my version of Leopard because it would always shut down right after the splash screen had finished. That is, until today.
I have two accounts on my MacBook. One for administrative purposes (which has full access to everything) and one for daily use (which is simply a user account). Just now I tried launching FCE using the admin account and it #%$&! worked!
So, how do I fix this? Obviously there is a permissions thing going on here or else it wouldn't have worked for the admin account. PLEASE help because this is really annoying.
    - MT

FOR ALL OF YOU HAVING THE FCE LOADING ISSUE:
I solved it (although it's more of an "I can't believe I didn't try this" issue). Check your permissions on the application. If you are not explicitly set as a user, add yourself.

  • Connection problems with FCE HD and a Canon XL1

I just can not get the system to see the camera so I can capture. I have an external Firewire drive as my scratch disc. Any advice? Thanks!

Ian & Tom, First of all thanks for your ideas and quick replies, I really appreciate it.
I'm using a (Belkin) FW hub but have re-routed things so the camera is going directly to one of the computer's two FW ports. Have tried all suggestions provided in your posts but the best I'm able to get is a message that reads, "Unable to initialize video deck. You may still use Capture Now." When I go to capture mode, however, no controls are usable and it says, "not communicating."
Tom, I went to System Profiler and am not seeing the Canon. My computer has two FW ports and I'm only seeing the hub (and not the camera plugged into the other port). What's strange is that the hub is showing an "unknown device" but there's not an unaccounted for device plugged into the hub. I've tried the camera in both of the computer's FW ports to no avail. I'm guessing that's the weak link.
    Regarding full system info...
    - PowerMac G4, dual 1.27 GHz PowerPC
    - OS X 10.4.10
    - FCE HD 3.5.1
    - EZ Quest external FW drive
    - Canon XL1 (but my material was shot with a Panasonic DVX 100A, I'm just using the older Canon to capture for editing to save wear on the Panasonic's playback deck -- but the Panasonic connects just fine)
Any other info needed? You guys totally rock for trying to help me with this -- good karma!

  • Problem with FCE HD 3.5

With this version of 3.5 of the software it is impossible to capture the video if at the Mac it is connected a Fire Wire disk. The software show the following message "This operation could not be completed as there is no video". If you disconnected the FW disk the software capture regularly the video. It is a very annoyng bug!!!

It may be a bug, but with the amount of information you've provided there is absolutely no way to know. What are your full specifications? What's the computer? New, upgrade? OS upgrade? What version of QT? What drive exactly are you using? How is it connected to the computer? What camera? How is it connected? What settings are on the material? What settings are you using in FCE? Were the devices turned on, connected and in the correct mode before the application was launched? That'll probably be enough to start with.

  • Xl2 problems with fce

I have a xll2 with a brand new dual 2.3 g5 and FCE, In the capture window the preview is disabled. I have control of the xl2 via firewire. I.E I can start and stop the tape in the capture window. But when I go to capture the computer doesn't see the timecode or the video. I also noticed that their is not a capture preset tab in the capture window. ( I am a FCP user so I was wondering if it was a FCP feature only or is it is located somewhere else.)

Did you recently upgrade to Tiger or QT7? Does this apply? http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852

  • File Error, or, Why I'm Still Having Problems With FCE-HD

so it's been a few weeks since i've had any problems, so why not have some more?
today, i started importing video, and i've had an error message come up during the middle of the importing, and it says "FILE ERROR". this message causes the tape in the camera to freeze, as well as the image on the screen. then the capture stops, and what i had been capturing is not saved.
has this happened to anyone else? what can be done to remedy this problem, if anything?
please let me know. thank you.

    Joe,
Could you provide more info please.
Where are you capturing to? How full is that drive?
Are you using capture clip or capture now?
    Have you re-tried the capture?
What "Easy setup" are you using?
    etc.

  • Audio problems with FCE 3.5

I have a dv clip I am trying to edit. The audio and video plays in the viewer clip, but when I play the project in the canvas the audio doesn't work. Instead I just hear a steady beeping noise. Can anyone help?

Yes, that answered my question. Although it doesn't help my situation, I understand. I guess I will have to download my clip straight to Final Cut and ignore the file I brought to iMovie.

  • Problems with Open Format Timeline

    HEllo to everybody.
I have a little problem with the open format timeline editing.
I'll try to explain it as clearly as I can.
I'm editing a project which will output as PAL 25 Uncompressed 8-bit, letterboxed, through an Aja LH to IMX tape
I'm editing different formats, PAL 25 and HDV 720p.
I'm now doing the online editing. I used media manager to create an offline project and I'm recapturing my media at high quality.
My timeline settings are PAL 25 Uncompressed 8-bit. I'm recapturing my PAL 25 footage Uncompressed 8-bit and my HD footage via component through the Aja with the setting 720p 50 Uncompressed 8-bit.
On the timeline though, my HD footage shows cropped on both sides. Meanwhile when I open the master clip from the browser it is in his 16:9 aspect ratio.
When I re-edit the clips in the timeline they are no longer cropped but show in their 16:9 aspect ratio.
    My question:
is there a way to recapture the clips from my timeline in a way that they already show in their original 16:9 aspect ratio?
Or the only thing to do is to swap all the clips on the timeline with their corresponding master clips in the Browser? The project is an hour and 20 minutes, and the second option is quite time consuming and greatly boring.
I would greatly welcome any suggestion
    thank you

    Thanks Tom.
I suspected it might be as I heard it flowing glibly off the narrator's tongue.
Incidentally, your fame is spreading over here.
Last night at our club meeting we were visited by a neighbouring society. One woman happened to mention to someone that she was having problems with FCE 4, so she was directed to me.
I mentioned the ADFs and your name, to which she responded, "I'm working through his book at the moment!"
