Translated documents

I've done some searching in the forum, but haven't found what I need.  Sorry if this question is a repeat of a topic already covered and solved, but I'm a fairly new FrameMaker user.  Feel free to direct me to a thread topic if that'll answer my query, which is this:
We create a base Instruction manual (Book) in English that may then require translation in up to 16 different languages. We then have 16 separate books, one for each language.  The time-killer is when there are edits to the English version that then need translation and inserting into each of the foreign language versions.  To save money, we usually make a file for the translation service that contains just the edited text.  This text is normally dispersed at various locations within the document.  It's difficult and time-consuming to find the proper location to insert the text in each foreign language version, especially one with an unfamiliar alphabet (Russian).
Can Paragraph Tag types be broken down and/or expanded like Sub-Layers within Layers in Adobe Illustrator?  I'm wondering if then each Tag ("Layer") could then have infinite, sequential (Body1, Body2, Body3...) numbering "Sublayers" to the end of the document.  These would be similar to how Bible verse is numbered.  Then, each numbered Paragraph Tag (Sub-Layer) could then be searchable with Find/Change.  Would this be an efficient method of replacing these bits of translated text?
Also, rather than 16 separate documents, would it be better/easier to have one document (the bulk of the manual/Book) conditionalized to include all languages?

Steve,
The time-killer is when there are edits to the English version that then need translation and inserting into each of the foreign language versions.  To save money, we usually make a file for the translation service that contains just the edited text.  This text is normally dispersed at various locations within the document.  It's difficult and time-consuming to find the proper location to insert the text in each foreign language version, especially one with an unfamiliar alphabet (Russian).
Your best bet would be to talk with the translation agency how best to avoid this copy & paste operation. They are most probably using Translation Memory software and can easily handle so-called "100% matches". If you take into account your own time handling the preparation steps as well as the publishing steps after translation (×16!!) it might well be less efficient than moving the full book to the agency and receive a full set of files in return. There are some stumbling blocks:
Some (most?) companies don’t value the time of internal workforce as much as they should do. They only look at external costs... what a waste of resources!
Some source language documents are in a condition which requires major work (×16!) after every translation run. The best way to handle that is working with Structured FrameMaker, but I have seen documents from well-organized teams of a very high technical quality, well-suited for translation.
Some source language documents do not use terms and phrases in a way that allows precise segment matching with foreign languages.
The last two points follow the principle »garbage in – garbage out«, if the documents are not up to the task you won’t get desired results.
Also, rather than 16 separate documents, would it be better/easier to have one document (the bulk of the manual/Book) conditionalized to include all languages?
No translation tool I know of is prepared to handle multi-language sources.
IMO it is best to start with the basics before trying to find a technical solution. Of course, I don’t know anything about the technical quality of the documents you have to handle and a lot of conditions are very specific to your company environment. Try to get a seasoned consultant to optimize your processes.

  • Can't import xml file: "need translation document/template" - - help please

    Hi there,
Someone edited a project with fcp 5.1. I have fcp 5.0. I've been asked to tweak the project (for no charge, which is fine with me; it's for a tiny 3rd-world charity organization).
He sent me the project files as xml documents... but when I double click on them I get a window saying they "need translation document file", or translation template. Nothing in my fcp folder or app seems to do the trick.
Can someone please advise me on this?
I did a search before posting, and noticed that someone advised someone else that xml version 2 is the better xml file to work with. I don't know whether the xml files this guy sent me are v. 1 or 2.
Any help would be very much appreciated!
    Malcolm

Thank you Studio X. I've just sent off the request. I'll let you know if it works.
IF it doesn't work... should I upgrade to FCStudio2, do you think? I didn't want to have to do that (I'm not being paid for this work, so I don't really want to go out of pocket), but if this XML2 thing doesnt' work, I'm not going to be able to do this project at all, it would seem. Which I would feel badly about.
The other thing is, I've been sort of thinking that some day I'm going to have to get FCStudio2, so maybe I should just push that day up a bit.
It would really bother me, though, if I go to the expense of getting FCStudio2, and then I still can't open these files.
    Cheers,
    Malcolm

  • I am trying to open a .xml file in FCP, when i try to import the file it says choose a translation document. Any ideas?, I am trying to open a .xml file in FCP, when i try to import the file it says choose a translation document. Any ideas?

I am trying to import a .xml file into FCP; it asks for a translation document file. Any ideas on how to proceed? Thanks

What kind of xml?  What kind of xml?
Shane is right if it's an xml exported from finalcutpro but there are many other kinds/uses for xml, most of which will not import into fcp.

  • How can i print a translated document but keep EN text at it's cropmark info??

how can i print a translated document but keep EN text at it's cropmark info??

If you just want this for printing, one thing you can easily do is crop all of the pages to remove the margins. For example, you can rop 2" off the left and right sides, and 1.5" off the top and bottom. Then print using a Page Scaling of "Fit to Printable Area".
To crop in Acrobat 9, select: Document > Crop Pages
be sure to select All for the Page Range.

  • XMLs and translation document files

When I try to open a XML file it asks me to choose a translation document file. What does that mean>

Are you using the import XML function in FCP and this the message you receive when you select the XML file you are trying to import? If so, the XML version you are trying to import may not be a version that your installation of FCP supports.
Go back to the outputting program and try exporting an earlier XML version.

  • Translated document: mismatched tag

    Hello,
I received an IDML file from translator wich I cannot open with InDesign CC. I received this message: "Cannot open document: mismatched tag"
    Is there any workaround?
    Thank you,
    Sebastian

Sounds like the document is damaged, or was built incorrectly. I would guess the error means that someplace you have an open and close tag that don't match up. This could be because a tag is missing, or possibly a punctuation error, though I'm certainly no expert on the .idml structure.
The only way to fix what you have, I suspect, is to unzip the .idml and look at the component files, find the tag error and correct it. That not something I feel qualified to do, and I suspect it wouldn't be easy for you either. Send the translator a copy of the exact error message you recieved and as them if they can fix it on their end.

  • Help! How do you adapt an InDesign document in various languages?

Hi everyone...we are presently working on a user manual which we designed in English. We need to adapt this manual in 4 other languages. Is there anya feature in InDesign that changes the language in the doucument without going through the process of applying styles etc? (The doc is 90pages) Thanks

Sorry, OP, I can't even really tell for certain what you're asking for. It sounds like you want to click a button that will automatically machine translate your document, and then autoformat so you don't need to do any post-translation DTP cleanup. I want that button, too, but
    a) it might be a decade or two before the technology exists to make that happen, and
    b) when it happens, I'm out of a job.
So, assuming you're not looking for an InDesign feature that completely translates and formats a document automagically, what are you trying to do? What are your target languages? Are the translations being provided by contractors, or do you have translators and editors in-house? There is a magic-bullet tool that will flow a translated document into ID and retain all style information, but it still requires some post-translation DTP cleanup, it costs about $5k (at the absolute minimum), and you need some years of experience using it to be able to process an InDesign doc without accidentally scrambling your translation.
Sounds to me like you are in need of a translation industry pro. If you can articulate what you're trying to do, I'll try to point you in the right direction.

  • Trouble IMPORTING xml DOCUMENT....

I may be banging my head against the wall (as usual)....
but is there any way to import an xml document (a sequence from a fcp project) created in fcp 5.1.2 into my fcp version 5.0.4 --?
I'm asked to 'choose a translation document file', when I go into my apps and select fcp, I get 'no translation templates matching the selected xml file were found. Unable to import'
    Thanks.

I just got thru working a project with someone in 5.0.4 and I'm in 5.1 -- we did xml transfers back and forth and it worked very well.
For some reason I chose to use XML version 2 out of the export window (just a guess) and it worked great.
One thing I had to do was keep opening a new project file with the xml (but this mainly was to keep the other person from getting too confused.)
It SHOULD work for you... it did me.
File - Export - XML... or right click the sequence and Export as XML... then choose version 2 (or try the others too).
    Good luck,

  • What application should I set to open the Data_Viz Carbon Translator files?

I was looking over the files in my AW application folder. Quite a few say (in Get Info) that they should be opened with a very old OS 9 game application I happen to have. And also the "Kind" is listed as a document for that same game. That's not right. What Application should I select instead? The path to these files is: AppleWorks 6, AppleWorks Essentials, Translators, Data_Viz Carbon, Translators, and then the files. Some examples of these files are AppleWorks SS 5.0, Excel 97, and Word 5.0-Mac Win.
Thanks! I have no idea how long this has been this way.

You do not need to open these files directly. They are used by AppleWorks to translate documents from and to other applications, and you can't do anything with them directly. The claim that they can be opened with some game application is simply the Finder not recognizing them and making a wild guess.

  • Foreign Currency - Revaluation / Translation

    Hi:
I wanted to discuss and understand the best practice for foreign currency revaluation and translation routine.
This is how we do and configured the revaluation / translation routine:
    Valuation Area:
SG for revaluation - Currency Type 10 (Local)
S2 for translation - Currency Type 30 (Group)
    Valuation Method: EVR (Always Valuate)
In the ledger currencies for 30, "Translation taking transaction currency as a basis".
Plus other coniguration for account determination (both revaluation and translation). - OBA1 and "Define Account detemination for currency translation".
Based on this configuration, we run following transactions at month end:
    Revaluation:  FAGL_FC_VAL using S2
    Translation: FAGL_FC_TRANS using SG
So what it does is, it revalue document currency into local currency and then translate document currency into group currency.
Ideally, what should be as per GAAP is: Revalue document currency into local currency and then translate local currency into group currency.
In our configuration, we are not able to translate out of local books. The configuration translates from document currency to group currency.
Are we missing anything in the configuration or this is standard? What is the best practice or how other companies are running the revaluation/translation routine?
    Scenario is:
    Document Currency: AUD
    Local Currency: GBP
    Group Currency: USD
    Please advise.
    Thanks.
    Rahul

As per US GAAP, FASB 52 -
    Step (1):-
Re-measurement - Revalue all the balance sheet accounts/open items with 'Document currency' other than 'Local currency' based on spot rate and post this difference to a P&L account (Unrealized Exchange Gain/Loss Account) in 'Local currency'. Do not impact the 'Group currency' here.
    Step (2):-
B/S Translation - Revalue all balance sheet accounts from 'Local currency' to 'Group currency' based on the spot rate and post the difference to Cumulative Translation Adjustment account (CTA) in 'Group currency' only. CTA is balance sheet account.
    Step (3):-
Unrealized Exchange Gain/Loss Translation - Revaluate the P&L account that's been used in step(1) for exchange differences, from 'Local currency' to 'Group currency' based on spot rate and post the difference to Cumulative Translation Adjustment account (CTA) in 'Group currency' only.
    Notes:-
    1) Equity and retained earning accounts are never revaluated.
    2) CTA account is grouped together with Equity accounts in reporting.

  • Does Pages make errors in translation?

I've heard that pages is supposed to translate Word documents flawlessly in many cases, but in my years of using computers, I find that quite often when a document is translated from one proprietary format into another, it may look fine, but it will start displaying bugs that it would never show in documents that were created from scratch. Has anybody experienced this in Pages?
I can understand the appeal of working in a document in Word at the office and then Pages at home, but I suspect this is a chimera. I've had other programs behave in all kinds of weird ways when working with translated documents, like crashing when trying to print, not allowing you to select things, not letting you redefine styles, etc.

People discuss compatibility with Word all the time here. To see what they say, go to this link
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=155
and type "word file" or something similar in the search box.

  • What is the best practice for creating master pages and styles with translated text?

I format translated text all the time for my company. I want to create a set of master pages and styles for each language and then import those styles into future translated documents. That way, the formatting can be done quickly and easily.
What are the best practices for doing this? As a company this has been tried in the past, but without success. I'd like to know what other people are doing in this regard.
    Thank you!

I create a master template that is usually void of content, with the exception I define as many of the paragraph styles I believe can/will be used with examples of their use in the body of the document--a style guide for that client. When beginning a new document for that client, I import those styles from the paragraph styles panel.
Exception to this is when in a rush I begin documentation first, then begin new work. Then in the new work, I still pull in those defined paragraph and or object styles via their panels into the new work.
There are times I need new styles. If they have broader applicability than a one-off instance or publication, then I open the style template for that client and import that style(s) from the publication containing the new style(s) and create example paragraphs and usage instructions.
    Take care, Mike

  • KM content and language translation

Dear Portal Experts, I have a page with multiple links and content that was created in KM-documents as HTML file. This URL is being called using the URL iview in a page. Is there any way to translate and display the content in multilanguage based on user login language. Thanks
    Regards
    Gabriel

    Hi,
First you need to arrange the KM content in different folders based on the language. Let say if are displaying help file.
Then in KM you need have folder Help following by sub folder for each language. Under these folders you will need to maintain the translated documents.
Now develop a custom abstract portal component ... implement the method doOnNodeReady()...
under this method, get the logged in user and his language.
    request.getUser().getLocale();
will provide you that. Now dynamically build an url for the KM document to be displayed.
    e.g.
    String url = "/irj/go/docs/documents/help/"+request.getUser.getLocale()+"help.html";
Once you have the url, then you need to forward the request to this url using the below code:
    request.forward(url);

  • Word 2013 cannot translate - no services available

I'm trying to translate an entire document in microsoft word through:
review -> translate -> translate document
which brings up a screen that asks me for mini translator to select a language. i can select spanish here - but nothing happens..
under it says "translate from" and "translate to" and both have a drop down menu
the only thing that appears is "no services available"
normally i should be able to select english and spanish..
    any ideas?
    thank you!

First, I did exactly what you suggested and noticed the feature was already installed, i.e. "Run from My Computer."
Second, I tried setting the feature to "not available" (uninstall), and after a computer restart I re-enabled it.
Third, I tried uninstalling the complete Office suite, restarting the computer , and then re-installing the software with "Run all from My Computer."
Fourth, I downloaded and re-installed all the language proofing 64-bit executables for French, Spanish, English (US), Chinese (PRC), and Japanese from the Microsoft Office 2013 website.
All of these methods did not resolve the issue. I would like to add that this was never an issue with Office 2010 32-bit--which was completely uninstalled prior to the 2013 installation. However, I do now recall my 2013 64-bit version for the mini translator
worked prior to a later Windows Update some time ago. I suppose an update may be responsible for the issue.
Can anyone confirm my hunch? Did your mini translator for 2013 64-bit run before and then suddenly stopped functioning?
