Trouble connecting with sqlplus

I installed the "instant client" rpm files...
ORACLE_HOME=/usr/lib/oracle/10.1.0.2/client
tnsnames is located in
/usr/lib/oracle/10.1.0.2/client/tnsnames.ora
and it has the following contents
ibis8i =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = ibis.[company_domain_here])(PORT = 1555))
(CONNECT_DATA = (SID = oracle))
when I try connecting with
[user]@ibis8i
Hi, I get the follwoing error
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
I can't work out what the problem is :(
This same tnsnames.ora file is used on another machine on the same network and it has no problems at all (ie. the specified identifier does exist).
help would be much appreciated.

I used php4 some years ago with 8.1.7 DB.
In my php login function ORACLE_HOME was configured as
putenv("ORACLE_HOME=/ora/OraHome1");
and it worked (/ora/OraHome1 was my Oracle home).
Now I don't use php anymore, but just trying to help you, I tried to connect to a 9i DB, and got your same error. Maybe 9i and 10g need a newer php version (or oci8 version) .....

I have an Oracle Server running for the last year with little issues.
The lister just stopped working...
I can TNSPing ok...I just can't connect with toad or sqlplus anymore from another computer..
I can connect with sqlplus on the same computer...just not from any other computers.

Connect with sqlplus to Fresh Install R12 Vision ORA-12154

Summary:
Trying to connect with sqlplus to R12 Vision fresh install gives me ORA-12154.
Context:
Installed R12 12.1.1 Vision instance on Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.4 x86-64 (SElinux disabled / no virtualisation). Followed [761566.1] and http://www.oraclenerd.com/2009/12/ebs-install-guide-part-1.html. I also followed instructions from [761566.1] on networking files to the best of my ability. Stuck as closely as possible to those two documents and also stuck to defaults as much as possible. All goes well with all tiers on the same machine (A). Startup and shutdown OK.
Extended description:
Now trying to connect using (latest) sqlplus on the same machine with the following:

Connection to db fails from client if connecting with sqlplus user/ps@NAME

Hi
I have just installed Oracle client 11.2 on a linux server.
When I connect with sqlplus apmr/******@apm
I am getting:
SQL*Plus: Release 11.2.0.2.0 Production on Thu Mar 29 11:11:17 2012

ERROR:
ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist
BUT, if I am connecting with /nolog and then insert user/password --> it success!!!
Could anyone solve this mystery ? :-)

java.sql.SQLException: Io exception: The Network Adapter could not establish the connection.Before asking you to get the help from your DBA, i would suggest to check couple of things like:
1) Write a standalone program and check whether everytime you are getting connection. If answer is yes.
2) Check whether in your web application do jdbc jar's are there (in lib folder) . If answer is yes. Check the version of jars. because the application first checks the dependant jars in application lib folder, if not found then it checks at classpath.
So this might casuse a problem.
If no luck after doing above steps, then i would suggest to ask the DBA, does DB goes down frequently? and show him that error. Because the error is pure say's SID is not up and running.

Trouble Connecting with Windows Partition

I'm having trouble figuring out how to connect to my windows partition on my MacBook from my Desktop. I've obviously set things up incorrectly, but I can't seem to find the proper information to do it right.
On my Macbook, I have two partitions, one for OS 10.5, one for Windows XP. When I go to the NETWORK pane, it shows "Library," Mac001B631E2161," "MacBook," and "Servers." I can connect to the Macbook just fine. When I try to connect with "Mac...." it gives me a SMB/CIFS File System Authentication" dialog box, asking to enter the workgroup or domain name and my user name and password. I enter in "workgroup" and my user name and password, and it tells me it "could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found." And if I try to Delete Alias," it says the operation cannot be completed because I don't have sufficient privileges.
Any advice appreciated.

Have you installed the certificate on the client computer? If you designate a certificate that is not installed on client computers, authentication will fail. For more detailed information about EAP, you can view the link blow.

Trouble connecting with IMAC to Windows shared files on network.

Every so often our IMAC will have trouble connecting to our file storage server (running Windows Vista). Usually we reboot the file storage server and this fixes the problem. When the connection problem occurs the IMAC can still smb into other workstations on the network, but not the file storage server. Anyone had any similar issues before? The two things that seem odd to me are 1) That the IMAC can still smb into other workstations on the network and 2) That a restart fixes it everytime.

You are not doing anything wrong. There are compatibility issues with the way Pidgin and iChat Leopard communicate. Your options are to use another windows client (PSI for instance) or make some changes to the configuration of the ichat server (namely set the server up to use the non SSL port 5222 and plain text log in).

Mac book air trouble connecting with wifi

all of a sudden my air wont connect to the internet even tho it says it is. my ipod and iphone have no problem on my wireless network, i can connect with it at my school however. am i missing something?

Have you tried clearing out any saved WiFi networks from your Network Preferences? Is it not connecting? Is not showing up in the WiFi menu?
What steps have you taken to trouble shoot this issue so far?

Does anyone have problems connecting with VZnavigator?

IDK how often that app is really updated with bug fixes or maps, but HERE maps is free and uses no data for offline navigation and Google Maps is really good, but it doesnt have offline navigation. I personally use HERE Maps.

Troubling connection with iTunes (I have to jiggle the cable), and my volume bar drops out very often.

Whenever I am syncing my iPhone 4 (with iOS 6.1.3) via cable with iTunes, I have to jiggle the cable to get it to connect with iTunes. Also, whenever I'm listening to any kind of sound, sometimes the sound just drops out and the volume bar disappears.
I asked an Apple tech in the store, and he told me to restore the phone and set up as new phone. I have done this with no success. Any suggestions

iPhone charging port is faulty or dirty. Clean charging port with clean toothbrush and small amount of Isopropyl Alcohol.

Nintendo ds--trouble connecting with TimeCapsule

We just bought a TimeCapsule and have it connected with our multiple wireless devices (including Wii) but cannot seem to connect our Nintendo DS Lite devices to it. We get the following message:
"Connected to the access point but unable to connect to the server. Confirm connection settings and internet availability. For help call...."
The error code is 52101.
We'll call the phone number provided but I suspect someone else has had this problem here. Thanks in advance for any help.

Guest network is designed using http protocol. After a device has connected to it, if you try to get online, you have to input the guest password first. After inputting the guest password, that's the time that the device can get online/access any websites. It would really be a problem if the device that you want to work with the guest network doesn't have a guest network. Trouble connecting with FaceTime

Hi, look I have the same problem but in my case I'm trying to connect with my girlfriend who lives in a different city. She can call me and I will receive the notification, but when I try to call her nothing will happen on her iPod. I double checked my internet connection and restored my iPod's settings several times tough I haven't come up with a solution for this. Any idea on what's happening?

If you have a computer or another connected device, is its browser working? If not, shut down everything for about a minute and then restart the modem, router, and computer. Be sure to let each device's self-test finish before you restart the next. Then check to see if FaceTime is working properly.
If you do not notice problems with any other devices or apps, intermittent AV problems may be due to intermittent interruptions in your internet service. Call your ISP and ask if they might be experiencing intermittent interruptions.
The problem might also be at your GF's end. Next time you experience the problem, go to a different wi-fi location and call her from there. If your results are the same as at your normal location, go home and ask your GF to call you from a different wi-fi. By moving only one of you at a time, you should be able to tell which of you is the source of the problem.

HT4628 trouble connecting with airport

Having trouble connected via airport. Have done it day in day out for a year. Nothing has changed.
Now it won't recognize my password. It recognizes everyone else in the office. Just not my machine anymore.
I can get internet via tethering to an iphone but not my machine.

Create connection with sqlplus client

i've a little connection problem with the oracle Instant Client I've installed on my Windows 7 64 bit. First, I've token the files:
instantclient-basic-windows.x64-12.1.0.1.0.zip
instantclient-sqlplus-windows.x64-12.1.0.1.0.zip
and uzipped them together in a directory. That directory is in PATH enviroment variable on Windows 7.
Now i want to try to get a connection to my Oracle 11gR2 (11.2.0.3) database on CentOS. When i do a EasyConnect:
PROMPT>sqlplus system/pwdofsystem@hostname_of_db_server:1521/SIDNAME
there is no problem to get to the database.
But when i try the long way:
PROMPT>sqlplus 'system@(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=hostname_of_db_server)(PORT=1521))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=SIDNAME)))'
first he asks me for the password for system. I enter the password and then I get an ORA-12560 error.
I allready read about that error but i can't understand, why i need an entry in a tnsnames.ora file when i gave sqlplus all the parameters directly. Or is there another failure?

TAKE OFF THE SINGLE QUOTES, you will be connected
Run this without single quotes,
PROMPT>sqlplus system@(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=hostname_of_db_server)(PORT=1521))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=SIDNAME)))
I guess if you are passing the whole ting in quotes, sqlplus is considering it as a 1 single parameter and assuming the whole thing as USERNAME.
