Trouble recording a guitar line in.

Hey guys, I'll try to make this as short and detailed as possible. I plug my guitar into my computer using the Line In, using a ME-70 as a preamp, but the computer doesn't register any sound.
Let me try to explain how I'm setting it up:
-My guitar is connected to the 'guitar in' on my ME-70
-I use a 1/4" to 1/8" converter on the 'Rec Out' jack in the ME-70 to connect to the line in on my computer.
-I turn the preamp on my ME-70 on.
-Go to System Preferences/sound, use the input audio as Line in

I checked, made sure all the volumes were on, and everything was plugged in properly. however, no matter how hard I strum, or what I put the volumes at, there is no response in the input level. Every cable functions perfectly, and when I plug headphones into the Rec Out jack it sounds great. what can I be missing?
thanks for your help.

I am also having trouble getting my guitar to show up in Garageband. I have followed every tutorial I can find online (they all say the same things anyways). I set computer audio preferences and GB preferences to line-in, and experimented with mono 1, mono 2, and stereo 1/2 line in sources in GB. No love from any of them. No sound at all. My guitar has active pickups and all cables work elsewhere. The line-in does show a bit of input when unplugging the cable from the computer so the input isn't dead.
Any help would be awesome.

  • Trouble with interference / guitar

Never tried recording a guitar with GarageBand, so I'm new to this. Hopefully I'm just doing something wrong.
I went out and bought a 1/4" to 1/8" mono adapter, ran a line from my guitar to the line in on my iMac - had to crank input levels to the max, ... there was a lot of interference... Some of the effects were okay, but anything with distortion (the "metal" effect is the killer) is just unusable... I thought possibly it was my pickups or something causing it (?), but when I unplugged the cable from my guitar, I could still here the steady interference drone... High pitch hiss sorta
Figuring that was not the ideal setup, I purchased a USB Lightsnake guitar cord. It's better, but there's still an annoying level of noise which really gets bad when I switch to the metal effect... I've upped the noise gate which makes it okay, but I don't understand why I don't have this issue on any amps I've used. (cheapies, too)
I then took the USB Lightsnake, and ran it from my Line-6 amp's headphone out to the iMac... Much better, but still - switching to that metal effect creates a constant hiss, regardless if I have the volume totally killed on my guitar.
The only way I can get a clean distorted sound is to have garageband set to no effects, and use the effects on my amp. Are the effects in GarageBand that bad or something? I'm confused, and was hoping I could do recording without dealing w/ my external Amp...

In my experience, you can sometimes get interference from the computer itself coming in through the pickups. (Obviously single-coils will be affected more than humbuckers.) For a start, try moving away from the computer with the guitar (even a few feet may help) or angling the guitar away from the computer.
Secondly, I certainly notice more noise with the higher gain GB FX, like the full-on metal setting, etc. Some of that is just the nature of the beast -- higher gain means more noise, generally -- but backing away with the guitar may help. Adding some shielding to the pickup cavity in the guitar might help, too.
I've got a decent twin-humbucker guitar (and they're good, 3rd-party humbuckers), and I can certainly generate a lot of noise with high gain GB FX settings and the guitar close to the computer and screen. Twiddling around the settings and moving around with the guitar seem to help -- and then much of the remaining noise ends up lost in the mix, with any luck!

  • Recording electric guitar

    Hi,
I'm trying to record off my guitar via a Griffin cable, but don't know how to go about it- the program doesn't seem to recognise that any external instrument is plugged. How do I go about this? Thanks, Al

    Hello there!
Forgive me but what is Griffin Cable? How are you interfacing with your computer, are you plugging right into the computer through the audio line in or are you using an external audio interface that uses firewire or USB? If you are using the internal audio line in you have to make sure Logic is set up to see that, or vice versa if you are using an external unit. Also make sure any MAC drivers for your audio interface are installed but COREAUDIO will see most of those with out drivers. Also make sure in LOGIC that the channel or "Track" your wanting to record the guitar on is 1.) Record enabled and 2.) That the input is assigned correctly.

  • Guitar Line-in Help!

So I'm trying to record my guitar with GarageBand 3.0.4. I bought the guitar cable that goes from 1/4" to 1/8". My guitar is plugged into my input jack right next to my headphone jack. I went to system pref --> Sound and selected Line-in from the list. I strum my guitar and see it register (it registers more with the Line-in than with the built in mic, so I know it's getting the input from my guitar). BUT GarageBand STILL uses my built-in mic to record instead of my Line-in guitar. Any suggestions? Is there a setting in GarageBand I don't know about?

  • Recording acoustic guitar with microphone

My sound levels are very low when I try to record a guitar - Real Instrument/Acoustic Guitar/Natural settings. I am using a Shure SM58 via an M-Audio Fast Track Ultra. My line levels seem very low. Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong?

You probably need to set the gain on the Fast Track quite high and get the mic fairly close, like less than a foot.
I usually like to use two mics for acoustic; one dynamic, like the SM58, and one condenser. Or a condenser and a line-in (I like the Dean Markley ProMag Grand soundhole pickup.)

I'm new using Logic, i've been using garageband for quite awhile now though but my question is just basic. When i want to record electric guitar while clicking the software option it brings me to alot of guitar sounds that i want to chose. I chose the twangy electric or the distorted strat but i only hear clean sounds. No matter what kind of guitar sound i chose in the library it only produces clean guitar. How can i make it sound like it supposed to? Did i miss something i should do?

This definitely has me stumped as I'm unsure as to why your guitar can be heard, but with none of the channel strips plugins applied to the sound.
On the record enabled channel strip that contains your guitar input, is the "I" button located near the "R" active? Also, if you record your guitar, can you hear the FX applied to it when you play back the recorded track?

  • What's a good interface to record voice/guitar tracks in Logic Pro

Hello - could you tell me what would be a good interface to record voice/guitar into a Logic Pro project please?  Thanks.

re the firmware update - there is talk that this should only be done if you are going to use USB - and also that it needs to be done via Windows.........I am confused re this?
I don't know about that, I don't own a Phonic, but if you only have to do it for USB, well, then there's no problem and you don't have to do anything, so...
Also when you say DAW (what does that stand for?
Digital Audio Workstation; Logic, Cubase, Protools etc are all DAWs. You'll probably encounter this term once in a while...
I just want to make sure and sorry if i sound silly but I should be able to use Phonic as my interface with Logic Pro without using Cubase?
    Yes.

  • Logic Pro how to record bass guitar

Logic Pro how to record bass guitar any tips?

What's up with this is you don't know what you're doing. Obvuoisly if it was the program's fault a few major motion pictures would have never been scored. Garageband was free with the system, it's made for beginners.
You've purchased a professional program, now you're going to have to educate yourself, enjoy!
Oh, you might start with the manual.
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/logicpro/
Choose the document  "Exploring Logic Pro"  Read through it.
    And from the main manual-

Don't worry, it won't hurt too much.

  • Record key and Line number

    - What are the uses of 'record key' and 'line number' in the DTW template?

So It is like indexing the records? okie..
Let me tell you a scenario. Please tell me what would be the result.
    scenario 1:
    Items to be uploaded: 200
number of templates: 2 ( 100 items per template)
I define the record key 1- 100 for the 100 items in the first template
I  also define the record key 1-100 (not 101 -200) in the second template
In this attempt, what will be the result? will the second template items update the first template items?

I'm having trouble with the guitar tuner in the new Garageband ..locked on C, no response! I've read that opening and locking a couple of times will unfreeze it but that's not working for me. Any suggestions?

  • I'm trying to multi-track using an m-audio device, I can record my guitar fine. However, I want to create a new track so I can record an acoustic tambourine over the top. Instead it records the original guitar as well as tambourine? its really annoying

I'm trying to multi-track using an m-audio device, I can record my guitar fine. However, I want to create a new track so I can record an acoustic tambourine over the top. Instead it records the original guitar as well as the tambourine coming out with a really distorted sound. I've managed to record over the top of a guitar before and add diferent riffs and sounds but I've tried all of the settings but its still not working. Basically I want to record different tracks without it recording my previous guitar riffs as well. Help would really be appreciated.

Ah that was it, thanks a lot common sense really but thanks for the help

  • While recording a guitar do not record the output from other tracks

    Hi all,
I'm an audition/recording newbie. I have Audition CC. I have recorded one guitar track. and now I'd like to record another one. The problem is that when I try to record it the output from the other one gets recorded as well. I do want to hear the output from the first track while recording track 2 but I want only to record my guitar playing in track 2.
    Thank you.

The basic problem here is not actually caused by Audition, but by your sound device mixer, which appears to be letting you record everything you hear - so that will be the guitar part you are playing, and also the replayed tracks that you've already recorded. In Windows, the fix for this is generally to make sure that the recording source is set to be just the input you are using, and not 'what you hear' or whatever it is on your device. The playback part of the mixer should let you monitor both the wav playback and your source, which is what you need to be doing - it's only the record settings you need to look at.
If you are using a Mac though, I can't help you because I don't know anything about how they work from that POV, but I'd imagine that it must be similar.
