Trying to network my mini Mac to Imac behind FIOS Router. How?

I just purchased a Mac Mini for my basement.
I am trying to network it with my IMac.
Both sit behind a FIOS Router.
I have tried using the File Sharing capability on my IMac but it seems to allow then disallow.
On my mini-mac I can sometimes see/find the Share capabality and other times it does not pop up on the left bar menu.
HelP?

can both of the mac's find the router on itself, i.e., have a network connection (to the internet for example) that doesn't drop away after some time?

Those specifications are not for the "last" mac mini, but for the mid-2011 Mac Mini: Macmini5,2.
While that model came with Lion and could not be downgraded to Snow Leopard out of the box, look for the work done by newfoundglory https://discussions.apple.com/people/newfoundglory in this thread on how to accomplish an install of Snow Leopard that will allow that model of Mac Mini to boot into Snow Leopard, if it is that important to you:

  • Transfering From Mini Mac to Imac

Hi All - Happy New Year
I have recntly upgraded from a mini to imac G5 - I transfered the files as suggested using the set up software and a firewire cable which was a success. Only problem when I start my pc I have two finder windows open - one for the imac and one for the mini mac - how can I get rid of the mini mac screen.
    Many thanks

Or you could use Titanium Software's freeware OnyX (choose your download carefully, according to the Mac OS X version you have installed). Does a whole lot for freeware!
You can also use Cocktail (shareware), Cache Out X 4.6.1 (donationware) or Northern Softworks' Tiger Cache Cleaner (shareware).

  • Does a wireless printer need to be on the TC network or can it remain on the FIOS router network

I have a verizon FIOS router with one wireless network...connected to it are 3 laptops, 2 HP wireless printers and numerous things like TV's, wii and Apple TV...when I set up a new TC and use it as my router for my Macbook Pro will I be able to print to the printers if I leave them on the FIOS network?..I of course will have the TC connected to the FIOS router via a ethernet cable. Its a pain to reset up all the numerous devices to a new network. Since the TC is connected to the FIOS router is it safe to assume something connect to the TC is also connected to the FIOS wireless network??

yes we got sidetracked into the extending thing..I don't want to do that I want to do what you mentioned latter..2 different networks I was planing on leaving my TV's, blueray, WII on the FIOS network but connect the laptops to the TC N network..and I'm now sure I'll have to set up the wireless printers on the TC network or the laptops wont see them..
So I will do as you mentioned in another post and:
Here is how to hook up your Time Capsule to the FIOS router:
Connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the FIOS router to the WAN (circle of dots icon) port on the Time Capsule.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility and click Continue to follow the guided setup to configure your Time Capsule.
Page 1 will ask you to assign a name and device password for the Time Capsule
Page 2 you want to choose the option to Create a wireless network
Page 3 will ask you choose a name for the wireless network and a password
Page 4 you want to select the Bridge Mode option
Page 5 select Configure IPv4 using DHCP. Leave everything else blank
Click Update to save your settings and the Time Capsule will restart in 25-30 seconds and you should have a green light.
You can now log on to the Time Capsule wireless network by locating the name of the network and entering the wireless network password.
It is possible that having two routers in close proximity both producing a wireless network may introduce wireless interference effects between the two networks. If you experience this, you will need to turn off the wireless on the FIOS router.

Trying to get my MacBook (10.5) to via home wireless network connect to my Imac (10.4). Was able to do this in the past many times. Now I get this error message when I press "Connect" on the Finder menu. I have double checked the 192 number but no luck after doing that.
"The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again" Error Code 36.

  • I'm trying to reininstall mini mac server

    Hi
I'm trying to reinstall my mini mac server after repair, disk swop.
When holding down the option key at startup i get an option to select wireless network.
That i can do, but nothing else! Where do i go from there?
    Jens

Your options depend on the particular Mac Mini, spare hardware, what backups you have, etc.
If your Mac Mini is new enough to have Internet recovery, you can use that.  Here is a discussion of Lion and Mountain Lion Recovery (HT4718)
If your Mac Mini is older, you'll have to install from whatever external media you have available, whether that's an old (bootable) backup or a recovery partition on an external disk, or the installer DVD that arrived with the Mac Mini, or one of the US$20 Snow Leopard DVDs that are available from Apple.
If you have a second Mac that can run the same version as the Mac Mini, you can create the recovery partition via that Mac, or you can cable to the Mac Mini via Target Disk Mode (FireWire or Thunderbolt — that latter link has some other useful information), making sure you don't clobber the disk(s) originally and normally connected to that second Mac.

  • Air Port Express/ Mini Mac problems

Trying to link my Mini Mac to an iMac - both old.
iMac is successfully running 10.4.3 with Airport Extreme working.
Mini Mac (old) - no airport card - hooked up to AirPort Express with ethernet cable.
Mini Mac/ Airport Express seem unable to connect to Airport Extreme.
Located about 50 feet away from each other.
Any suggestions? Would it be better to connect the Airport Express to the Mini Mac with a USB cable?

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
First you need to configure your AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express so that the two AirPort units for a "WDS" network. You can find instructions starting on page 42 of this manual:

Any suggestions? Would it be better to connect the Airport Express to the Mini Mac with a USB cable?
That won't work. The AirPort Express USB port is only for a printer.

  • "Network service error" game apps that require internet connection working fine, internet signal strong. Safari working, but YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and App Store won't work?! Tried resetting network settings but problem persists?

Safari working fine, as are game apps that require internet connection.
I can not get AppStore, YouTube app, Facebook app or twitter app to load anything as 'network service error" comes up.
I have the latest update 7.2 and have tried resetting network settings, anyone else have this problem?! How do I fix it?

I did try that one. But for some reason it still does not help. The strange thing stays that I can acces Twitter and other Apps. But still nos Safari/App Store. Only when I am on Wi-Fi.

iam trying to buy OS Lion to my Imac but i can not buy  because its saying Mac OSX 10.7 requires at least 2 GB of memomie and mine has 1 GB what can i do?

If it's just a question of memory, you can buy and install more. It could also be that your iMac is just not compatile with Lion.
    Minimum requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • In my small office ethernet network all of a sudden one of my imacs cannot be connected to. It can connect to all other computers and can access internet, but as soon as someone tries to connect to that mac, it disconnects from the network. Any ideas

I have a network of 9 macs that connect via ethernet and a router. All of a sudden one of the macs cannot be connected to. It can connect to all others and the internet, but no one can connect to that one. I have appletalk active and file sharing on, but everytime someone tries to connect to it, it is not on the network. Additionally, the personal file sharing keeps turning off even though I have it locked. Any ideas?

    Hi orangekay
not sure where you got the idea that I have
bizarre encrypted filesystem plugins and scripts you have manipulating them all the time
because I do not have any such running, just normal Applescripts that do tasks that could be done by hand.

  • Has anyone set up a mac mini using an iMac

I am trying to set up a mac mini with my iMac.  My end goal is to share files between the two and use my iMac 27" screen for the iMac and the mac mini.

AirDrop will let you share files with very little configuration on your part.  As long as the two machines are on the same network, you're just about ready.
As for sharing a display, the 27" model used to support Display input via DisplayPort, which used to be a matter of buying a cable and connecting one to the other. I'm not sure if that feature has come over now that they've switched from DisplayPort to Thunderbolt.
You could also use Screen Sharing to view the mini's desktop from the iMac...again, as long as the two computers are on the same network (and you've configured Screen Sharing on the mini) it should work.  Good luck!

  • HELP! Trying to network Macs with Windows PC is making me crazy.

I've been trying without success to network my Macs with a PC running Windows XP Home for longer than I care to think about. Here's the set-up: iMac G4 and PC are connected to Linksys router via ethernet. iBook and Mac Mini connect to internet via Linksys wireless access point connected to router. iMac is connected to an Epson photo printer; PC is connected to an HP laser printer. The Macs and the PC all happily share DSL internet access through the router/access point, but I've been unable to set up a true network that would allow for file- and printer-sharing. There's no problem getting the Macs to make nice (no suprise there) but getting the Macs and the PC to do so is another matter. The iMac and PC can ping each other (albeit only when I turn off the firewall in my PC security program) but do not "see" each other in their respective network set-up utilities. Nor have I been able to connect one to the other via IP address. I've found and followed instructions from a variety of sources on setting up a cross-platform network, all to no avail.
I'd love to get the whole set-up working as is, but would also add or switch hardware if it would make things easier. Among other things, I've wondered whether it would help any to add wireless cards to the iMac and PC for an all wireless set-up, or to get a print server, or to substitute an Airport for the Linksys gizmos. Any suggestions or advice will be profoundly appreciated.
iMac G4; iBook G4; Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Thanks for your reply and the terrific lucid instructions you've posted on your website. Yes, all the computers are on the same subnet. I followed your instructions for printing from the Mac to the PC and vice versa but unfortunately it's not working in either direction. On the PC, when I put in the URL of the printer connected to my iMac, I get an error message saying, "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly [it was not] or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server." On the Mac, on putting in the account name and password for my administrator account on the PC, I get an error no. 256 that says, "Unable to connect to server with the provided password and user name."
I guess this goes back to the PC's and the iMac's not being able to "see" each other on the network. I have no idea why that is or how to fix it.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • I tried, but ... Mac Network & Win-7 PC

OK, I start with "I Know..." look thru old posts to find answers.......
Just Spent last 4 Hours doing that. I understand how frustrating it can be to keep answering the same questions (Really Do) but a Great Fix for that would be finding Some Way to make it possible for us to FIND those old posts we are supposed to look for. I have read countless "Close, but not quite" discussions. I give up.
I'm assuming after entering all my machines in the database you can see those at the bottom of the post?? (I have seen others posts that had these details) to save space, I wont repete all that here other than to say I have MANY Apple Products (Phone, Pad, TV, Laptop, Mini...) and they all work & play with each other with fluid ease...... then there is the ONE... PC Laptop. Running Win-7.
NOTE: ALL of this is INSIDE My Home Network (Apple Time Machine Wireless) so no Internet stuff should be necessary.
I'm sure it is asking way too much, but I sure would like to be able to use the PC like any of my other mac's. I have managed to share a drive (External HDD) from the Mac Mini (Lion) and by "Mapping a Network Drive" on the PC it ...sometimes connects on it's own, when it doesn't it's simple enough to log back in and get it back but ....
As an example, with my Mac Book Pro. I can SEE all the other devices, Log into them, Share print & data and "Screen Share" to remotely administer (eg. the Mini from the Laptop)........... What I'm looking for is those same abilities on the PC.
("Why don't you just buy another Mac Laptop?" - Send me a check for a Couple of Grand, and I will. Other than that, I have to work with what I have. The only "Extra" Computer I have is the PC) Just trying to make some lemonaid out of this lemon. OK?
Frankly the only posts I found even close seemed to be about making a lone Mac work on an existing PC Workgroup Network. This is the Flip Side, One Lone PC is a world of Mac's. I have to admit my PC skills are rusty. I was a PC Guy that got "Converted" used to know Lots of the in's & out's of the PC's, but that was about 4 Operating Systems Ago (2000 & XP-Pro) I find I now feel like a Newbie again plodding along in the new MS OS again.
Being able to see the other machines would be a plus, connecting to all the drives & my NAS would be Great, but the Screen Sharing would be my Top Wish (If it's even possible) My various Mac's often do work that is LONG Running (sa Rendering Long Video Files, etc.) that can run on their own for long periods and Occasionally Need just a Nudge from me to get started again. This is why the Screen Share is a Big Deal for me. Do some work, Check in on #1, start it's next process, log out, check on #2, move some files and begin a new Process, log out, check on #3, then go back to work.... and I'm Not Always at my desk, so being able to quickly Pop in & out of each machine is a BIG PLUS for me.
I tried some Remote Desktop Software a while back when I was trying to connect my iPad to my Home Mac Network from Outside my home and discovered I knew Less than Squat about that. Tried & Failed to get software to work even after several emails with the developer of the APP. I couldn't even understand what he was talking about (and I have a CS Degree ??... OK an Old One on Main Frames, not PC's but I'm no Dummy and he was talking WAY over my head) So I pretty much gave up on that option.
If you have the answers? Appreciate the Info,
Even if all you have is links to other posts that have what I'm looking for? Great Too
    Thanks
