Trying to upgrade to 10.4 - Problems will not boot now

Hi,
I tried upgrading to 10.4 the other day. Currently my iMac is running 10.3.9.
When I tried upgrading, it would start the install and than freeze and wouldn't go any further. After several attempts I ran the Tech Tools CD i got with my computer. It said I had a problem with the Volume Structure. So I click the fix button and I assumed it was fixed and it continued to check everything else ok.
When I restarted the computer it would not boot into the operating system. It freezes on the gray screen with the loading bar. Left it alone for about an hour and it was still there. The only way I can boot it up now is with the Tech Tools CD.
Any ideas what happened or what I should do?
Thanks in advance.
Mike A.

Hi Mike:
I feel for you. I just went through a similar ordeal with a G4 (look here for details).
I think at this stage your problem is that you don't have a complete system installed. At least I was able to remove the hard drive and move it to another computer to get Tiger installed on it.
You could try cleaning your Panther CDs and trying again, but I suspect the source of your problem lies elsewhere: the logic board. If ds store is correct, and the firmware did get hosed during the upgrade, then we're both looking at expensive repair bills to get it fixed.
I'd also try removing all but the original (256MB) RAM, zapping the PRAM, and resetting NVRAM. It can't do any harm, and you might get lucky. You can replace the RAM once you get a system installed.

  • How do I uninstall Yosemite please ? Since I upgraded my 2011 MacBook Pro will not boot up

My 2011 MacBook Pro will not boot up following my upgrade to Yosemite. How do I uninstall or downgrade back to the previous version of OS please ?

You can't downgrade or uninstall unless you first erase the drive. Try the following:
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

The HP 700-209 has win8. It operates under strict UEFI BIOS control called Secure Boot. It protects the computer. Call the manufacturer of that card to determine if the card operates under UEFI or legacy BIOS. After that,  you'll have to disable secure boot and then deal with the "legacy" issue.

You mean you forced the computer off with the power button?
When you say the middle of loading a system update, what do you mean? Downloading it, installing it??

You need to boot into the Leopard DVD by inserting the DVD, rebooting and holding down the "C" key. After the language screen, in the menu, top left, under Utilities, run disk utility and repair HD and permissions.
    That's the first step.
If that does not work, boot into the safe mode by holding down the shift key on boot. If you get to the login screen, you are probably in good shape - just click restart and let the system reboot normally.

  • Screen Problem/Will not boot?

My black macbook purchased in 2008 running OS X (10.5.8 I believe) would appear to not be starting up. When I turn it on, the screen flashes and I hear the chime and then it goes black. I'm not sure if this is a screen problem or something else. I can hear something running despite the screen being black. When this first occurred I was watching a video on youtube and I could hear the video still playing and the computer still function but the screen went black. I tried to boot it in safe mode and that did not work. I tried taking out the battery and yet again, that did not work. Is there anything I can do? Has anyone else had this problem?

  • Sonnet Encore Zif G4 Installed but will not boot.

I am back and feel like the frustrated enator. I called tech support at sonnet and got the upgrade installed but B&W will not boot.
I checked Sonnet tech page and I have no PCI cards installed and the hard drive that was attached out. However I can not get the power plug that was attached to it off could this be the problem. If so how does one pull it off?
I also read some place may have been a post at site the some 256 ram may not be compatable with up-grade. I have 4 sticks of pc 133 non ecc in the B&W. Problem?
I replaced them with 4 sticks of 64 ram pc 100 but still would not boot. Old ram that is untested.<

After doing the firmware upgrade on the G3 some memory that worked before the upgrade will either not work or will not be fully seen. I had a couple of 128M sticks in my g3 that only showed up as 64M after the firmware upgrade, and one 256 pc133 that did not work at all.
I seems you are trying to do three things at once: firmware upgrade, cpu upgrade, and memory upgrade. Doing all at once without confirming the success of each install makes troubleshoting your problem difficult.
    Go back to ONE.
    - take out the G4 upgrade
    - put the original G3 cpu
    - remove all but one stick of memory
    - boot into OS9 with the one stick
-if no-boot then remove that stick, try another...
    - confirm that the G4 firmware patch has been properly installed (do it again)
(even if you can not disconnect the power supply line from the PCI card thats fine as long as the card is not in the slot)
-after booting with one stick, reboot and add ONE stick of memory , confirm memory in System Profile. Continue untill you have all your memory confirmed and working in OS9
-once you have all of your installed memory working in OS9 boot into OSX, confirm the memory in System Profiler.
-if no boot in OSX remove all but one stick, try that.
-if one stick works, take it out and set it aside, try another, test each individually.
-install all the working sticks you have
-recheck that all the memory appears in System Profiler
-Now reinstall the G4 upgrade with just one confirmed working memory stick in.
-If that works put in one stick at a time and reboot, checking for the memory in System profiler each time.
If this works you should have a happy mac. If not you will be able to report back with exactly where problem is.
I know this is a lot of rebooting but IF you have a bad memory stick it is the only way to find it, and you have to ensure that all the memory is osx compatible before trying to install a cpu upgrade.

  • Power mac G5 turns on but will not boot up

    Hello,
I have the last power mac G5 quad core made before apple switched over to intel. I have not used he computer in about 3 month and it worked fine when I put it into storage but when I tried to turn it on today it will not boot up.
There is constantly a yellow light on near to where the RAM snaps in even when the computer is off. (this is the 3rd light up from the bottom and the only on that is on at this point)
When I press the power button a red light turns on for about one second. Next to this light are the words LED806 Checkstop and it is offset to the right of the other lights a little bit when looking into the side panel of the computer. This light also lights up briefly when I press the power button to turn off the computer.
After pressing the power button another red light turns on just above the yellow light that is always on and the screen is still black. Then the screen eventually turns grey with the apple logo as it normally looks except some of the pixels are off colored a bit in square patterns across the screen. When this happens a green light turns on just below the yellow light. Now there are three lights on all at once.
Next the screen briefly turns light blue and then a little darker shade of blue and the computer will not boot up or go any further than this point.
Can anybody tell me what is going on here and is there any way to fix this?
Is there any way to reset or reboot the computer this the install disk?
Distortion on the startup screen (hard to see in this photo)

    Hi Mike,
LED 1—CPU A:  red—contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider
LED 2—Overtemp:  red—contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider
LED 3—Power On:  red—the main power is on
LED 4—Trickle:  yellow—Power Mac G5 is plugged into the wall correctly
LED 5—Open Firmware good:  green—no problem
LED 6—CPU B:  red—contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider
LED 7—Checkstop:  red—contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...

  • White 2008 MacBook will not boot completely (hangs up)

For Christmas 2008 I bought a New 2008 Apple MacBook (White) for my 13 year old Grandson. He gave it back to me to "fix" .
He said the following problem ----will not boot/Hangs UP during boot---- *first appeared immediately after he downloaded and installed an "APPLE/MACBOOK" update of some kind last week.*
DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR TO ANYONE OUT THERE? IF SO I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR SUGGESTIONS.
    More info:
It will not boot completely. when powered on it-- chimes once with the normal Mac sounds (Not a POST Beep error)---- and a white screen---- with apple logo in center appears--- after several seconds a small spinning "activity/busy" circle appears below the logo. This circle appears and spins for about 3 to 4 minutes with no other activity happening. Then the screen goes blank and power goes off.
Oh yes I am not certain as to the Exact OS designation that is installed (sorry)
I am new to Mac but have checked:
The power (A/C, and supply are on, Mag power cord attached and battery charge light on battery is blinking green with 4 steady green lEDs on--- (So I assume I'm OK with NO power or battery issues)
I then tried to boot into "safe" mode. (shift key when power on) (No change)
Then I tried Cmd, Option, P, R keys as suggested in manual during power on to reset nv(p)Ram (No change)
Grandson is searching for manuals, OS Apple Hardware troubleshooting disk etc. While I wait to receive those items from him --------
Does anyone have any Ideas /suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!
    Joe

HI Joe and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Since you can't boot in Safe Mode that's not a good sign. You really need those install disc(s) to repair the drive if necessary.
When you get the install disc...
Insert the installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open look at the bottom of the window. You will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% free disk space.
You can try something that doesn't require the install disk and that's Reset the SMC
If you can get the MacBook to boot up to the Desktop, click the Apple Menu then click About This Mac. The Mac OS X version number will be displayed there. 10.x.x

  • KT2 Combo will not boot

Installed board with Duron 1300.  The board booted to bios with no problems, until I formatted the HD and rebooted.  It will not boot now at all.  No bios, VGA doesn't even come on.  No beeps. No HD activity, nothing.  I cleared CMOS and nothing happened.  Please help me!!!!

No beebs? PC-speaker connected? If there is no beebs or life of any kind, the motherboard or some some other part may be shortcutted. Or something very VERY important has fried on the motherboard or PSU is broken.
If it's a short circuit, disassemble you computer completely and try to boot your mobo out of the case w only the most neccessary equipment installed.
Also, don't forget to check your fsb jumper that it isn't in the wrong setting, it is right next to clear cmos jumper and if you accidentaly switch that in the process from fsb 100 to 133 the mobo will most certainly not boot.

After upgrading to Snow Leopard, Mail will not let me archive any mail. All archived messages re-appear in my inbox (I have tried archiving and placing in the trash bin). How do i regain control of my inbox?

The main differences that can cause a problem are scripting additions (64-bit vs 32-bit and security reasons) and the usage of dates (it is not as forgiving). AppleScript itself is basically the same, so if empty paragraphs are what caused your problems the update would have just been a coincidence.

Same here.... No fix. Replacing is the option apparently and if you're out of warranty, you're SOL. That was as per the "Genius" at Apple.

but itunes on my phone has my correct current id and password.  I need to restore my back up from itunes, i did not use icloud.

I did try yesterday but did not realise at that time that itunes had correct apple id.  Hopefully this is a good thing!

Thank you for your prompt reply.
I have looked at icloud.com/find numerous times and my iPad is not showing at all (see picture below). As I said I did turn off 'Find My iPhone' on my iPad and then erase all settings and data before taking it to the repair centre.
The gentleman at the repair centre said that the device won't restore because "Apple thinks that 'Find My iPhone' is still turned on" (I'm repeating what he said).

  • MacBook pro will not boot. I get the gray screen, an apple icon and spinning wheel. Tried to start in safe mode but get the same screen. The only thing different was that I loaded the zedge sync app yesterday. Now getting this problem.

Macbook pro will not boot. I get the gray screen, an apple icon and spinning wheel. I tried to start in safe mode, but get this same screen. The only thing different is that I added the zedge update app to do a sync for adding ringtones to my apple cell phone. How can I get a good boot. I am fairly new to apple computer.

Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405 and then try a normal boot.
Run the Startup Manager to select Startup disk:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1310
If those did not work your disk may be sick or dying.  The top priority at this point is to make a backup copy of your data.
Check the health of the disk.  Boot in Recovery Mode (Boot, Command-R).  Run Disk Utility.  Click on the upper left disk icon.  Does the S.M.A.R.T. status say “Verified”?  If not the disk/SSD is unhealthy and needs to be replaced.  Even if it does not show “Verified” you can still attempt a backup.
Click on the icon indented below, usually called “Macintosh HD” and Verify Disk.  If it finishes with a green “OK” message then all is well with the disk.  If it shows errors in red then you have found a problem to address once the system is backed up.  Do not attempt software repairs until you have secured the data.
If the disk will not show up at all in Disk Utility as your ran the tests above then it may be dead or it may have a bad internal SATA cable.  A trip to an Apple store for confirmation would be in order.
If you have an external disk drive you can use as a backup drive then do so.  If not Google “Hitachi USB 3.0 external hard drive 1TB” to purchase one or go to a brick-and-mortar store (including an Apple store) to pickup one.  Any 1 TB external drive will do.
Assuming it is still breathing you can try to recover the data without booting from the sick disk.
Reformat the external disk.  (This will erase all data on the external disk.)
Boot in Recovery Mode.  Start Disk Utility.  Plug in the new disk.  Select it’s disk Icon (the second one down, left justified). Select the Partition tab.
    Partition Layout > Single Partition
Name: Emergency Recovery 1 (or whatever name you wish to use)
    Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    Options… > GUID Partition Table > OK
    Apply
    Select the Restore tab.
Drag the old system volume (Macintosh HD) to Source.
Drag the new disk volume (Emergency Recovery 1) to Destination.
    Click on Restore.
It may take a long time for the backup.
If that will not complete post back for other emergency data recovery methods, including those from a brody.
If the backup succeeds, use the First Aid tab in Disk Utility to select the old volume (Macintosh HD) and Repair Disk.  If it does not finish with a green OK message try to repair it once or twice more.  If it repairs with a green OK message, will it boot normally?  If not, boot from the Recovery Partition and reinstall OS X.
If it is still not healthy, post back for further instructions.
