Trying to use iSight as a mic in Garageband 2

I can use my iSight microphone to make audio recordings through quicktime, but when I go to Garageband's preferences and try to select the isight for the input, the option is there, but it is greyed out and it also says (not 44.1). I'm assuming it's telling me something about the recording quality, but that's about all I can get from that. Any thoughts on what that might mean and if there is a way to use my isight microphone in Garageband?

From the podcast link on the Garageband help page:
"Attach your preferred audio interface and a microphone to your Mac, or use your computer's built-in microphone. (Note: The iSight camera is not supported as a microphone input in GarageBand.)"

  • Recording with an external computer mic in Garageband?

    Hi,
I am trying to record an interview for a podcast on location and was trying to use an external computer mic. This isn't a professional mic or anything, just one that goes into your phone jack or line-in. cheap little thing many computers come with. the problem is i can't seem to get the recording to go through the mic. when i use Built-In Line-In nothing records. If i switch to Built-In Microphone, obviously then it works, but is using the internal mic.
Can anyone help me in the appropriate setting to use with an external microphone NOT coming in through an Audiophile or similar set-up (i have used a professional mic as well with an Audiophile, but needed something more portable)
    thank you in advance!

thanks - i tried bulletsandbones and have to admit i'm not sure it helped me. But maybe i'm missing something. I changed the recording options to Built-In Line-In but still nothing was recorded. the second link just says "depends on your processor" so it's not too much help. Basically is there a way for me to record using a line-in Mic WITHOUT it being a Firewall or USB device?

I bought the Zoom Q2HD video recorder to use for video and because it can be used at a USB Mic for iPad.  I recently bought a camera connection kit and last night tried to get the Zoom to work as a mic but it would either not work at all or it would crash GarageBand and the ipad and take me to the Apple logo as it restarted the iPad.

You are not supposed to connect a pair of speakers(as in left and right in a stereo pair)to two separate out jacks on the sound card.the place on the card where headphones/speakers with the mini jack goes is the right place.

  • Can't capture video using iSight camera in QuickTime 7.4 (92)

OK, I see that there are plenty of "bugs" with Quicktime Version 7.4 (92), but I don't see the problem I am having, posted anywhere. Here goes...
I cannot capture video using my [Firewire] iSight camera on my CoreDuo MacMini. I definitely used to be able to do this. When I go to File>New Movie Recording, I get a back/blank Movie Recording window and that's it. I click on the Red/Record button and nothing happens. The timer doesn't even advance. Just sits there. When I try to stop the recording, I get the following message:
*"Recording failed because no data was received.*
*Make sure that the media input source is turned on and playing."*
I can still capture audio, although had some problems and had to "downgrade" to version 7.3.x and subsequently reinstalled 7.4. Now the audio works but still no video.
    A few things:
    1. YES, the iSight camera works - I can use it in iMovie, iChat, Photobooth, etc. - for both video and audio.
    2. As I mentioned, I tried "downgrading" (using "Pacifist") but still no video.
    3. I re-installed Version 7.4 and the audio problems cleared up, but again, still unable to capture video.
    3. All software updates installed.
    Any ideas???
    Thanks!

See QuickTimeKirk’s posting in the following thread:

    Try the following:
    Trash com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
    It's located in your account:
    HD/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
Delete the file, restart (a new .plist will be created) and quicktime hopefully will work again w/o doing an Archive & Install.
+If you want to do an A&I:+
Do an archive and install of your OS from the OS disc. Stop at the QT upgrade you need.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301270 Scroll down to "Archive and Install”
IMPORTANT: Maker sure you select "preserve user preferences and data" when you performed the A&I?
    Good luck!

Is it a USB hard drive?  USB hard drives have the problem of not giving full speed if they are hooked up on the same bus as keyboards and mice.  Double check your profiler to make sure that is not a problem.  If it is Firewire, make sure there aren't other firewire devices in use at the same time.  I recommend not only keeping a Time Machine backup, but also a clone, and if you do use Time Machine, to make sure the Time Machine drive or partition is at least twice the size of the original drive.

  • Video Link using iSight on MBP

Hi folks, I have a dilemma.
I am trying to get a live video link up and running for a wedding.
The service is going to be in one room and we need a video screen in another room for the overflow of guests to be able to view the service.
I am currently trying to use the following to no avail.
isight camera on 1st gen 15"MBP 2.16G with 2GDDR2 SDRAM or MB Core2Duo (Black), It doesn't matter which camera we use, they both work fine. Both machines are fully up-to-date with all patches on OSX v 10.4.10
Airport Express base station for connecting the computers wirelessly (on which they can file share etc with no problem).
I have tried various things using QT Broadcaster & QT / VLC with many different configurations, none of which enable me to view a live video stream.
I am currently downloading DarwinStreamingServer to see if this will help.
there must be a way to do this, can anyone shed any light?

    Hello mooseworks.co.uk
If I understand your postings correctly, you are not having problems with your iSight.
Rather, you are asking for help with QT Broadcaster and Darwin Streaming Server. If you need more help than you find in the "Help" files for these applications, see Apple's QuickTime "Streaming & Delivery" tutorials.
If you need still more, try posting your question in the QuickTime for Mac OS forum.

  • MacBook slows down to a crawl when using iSight

    Hi!
I have a 2006 MacBook (Core Due 2 GHz), which I have upgraded to Snow Leopard (via Leopard). I am trying to use the built-in camera ("iSight") for video chat, but when I do, the computer slows down to a crawl, and the application that is using the camera takes all CPU.
I've tried with both iChat and Skype, and the result is the same, so it seems to be in the camera drivers and not the applications themselves.
Does anyone have any good ideas on what I can do to alleviate the problem? I have not installed any specific drivers for the camera beyond what comes with Mac OS.

    Hello nafmo
Snow Leopard's iChat 5 does require more CPU power than iChat 4 (from Leopard), so you may, in part, be noticing that. The best way to verify that is with your Mac's Activity Monitor utility. For your comparison, my new 2.26GHz Core2Duo MacBook Pro uses slightly more than half of both cores for Snow Leopard iChat video chats.

  • Sound Issues using iSight

I am using iMovie 7.1.4 and when I try and record video & sound using the built in iSight camera, I get pictures but no sound.
I know the audio settings are correct in the System Preferences as I can record a voice-over using the built in mic. Thoughts / help anyone?
    Thanks in advance, Andrew

Sorry, that's my mistake... I changed the drop down menu on my OS (but forgot to change it on my next post). It is indeed 10.6.6.
However I've managed to sort the issue out with a bit more research (thanks to your post). The 'noise reduction' settings were turned right up in the Voiceover recording panel... which despite not affecting the 'voiceover' recordings as much, they had in turn effectively muted the mic during video recordings.
So I've turned them down and got sound back on both types of recordings.
    So thanks

  • Noise when using isight in Movie 08

I have substantial noise when using iSight in iMovie '08. Please see my example on Youtube Mirno63 labeled test. I would like to have my daughter practice for a recital using isight but the noise is so loud. Please help!
    Thanks
    Marian

    Hello, Marian (mirno)
If I am listening to the correct YouTube video, I think that at least some of the sound that is troubling you is background noise. Sookyas may also be right that feedback is causing your problem.
In either case, using an external Mic that is positioned closer to the voice you want to record than to your MBP should help you.
I use this Logitech USB Desktop Microphone when I want to get sound from a person who is not close to my Mac. My Logitech does a GREAT job on spoken words. Although it is not advertised as (and does not cost as much as) a music microphone, it gives better sound recordings than my laptop's built-in mic unless the voice being recorded is very close to my laptop. It certainly meets my singing and other amateur music needs. However, other brands should work, too.
Unless you can buy one from a trusted retailer who will give you full exchange or refund credit if a new microphone does not correct your problems, I suggest you take your wonderfully portable MBP with you when you shop, add any needed driver, and test the mic before you buy.
Here is how I would perform the test.
    • Leave "AudioMide" settings at default. (You should not need to change these settings when using iMovie except in extraordinary circumstances.)
    • Set your  > System Preferences > Sound > Input to use the new mic as your input device.
    • Extend the microphone's cable away from your MBP, and start recording.
    • Leave the computer where it is and physically move near the mic so your mouth is approximately half a meter from mic.
    • Sing or speak in a normal voice for a few seconds and then stop the recording.
    • Now change your System Sound Input preference back to user you MBP's built-in mic again.
    • Start recording again.
    • Leaving the MBP in place, move back to the same place where you tested the external mic.
    • Sing or speak again at about the same volume you did when using the external mic.
    • Stop the recording, and play back both recording so you can compare them.
This test should let you easily determine whether the external mic meets your needs.
If the noise is still there when recording from the external mic, there is most likely something wrong with your Mac. Contact Apple or your Apple-Authorized Service Provider.

You cannot use your built-in iSight for video in two applications (Skype and iMovie) at the same time.
I do not see any built-in ability to record video calls in Skype's video features page:
      http://tinyurl.com/239gqgf
The easiest way for you to record Skype video is to add http://ecamm.com/mac/callrecorder/
You will find many other possibilities if you search the web for "+how to record Skype video call?+" (without the quotation marks.) You may find many other perfectly acceptable alternatives, but I have always had good results with ecamm products and can recommend them in good conscience.
If you are determined to use iMovie, I can suggest two ways to record a Skype video call using iMovie:
    (1) Run Skype on one Mac
      • Run iMovie on a second Mac pointing at the first Mac's display.
    (2) Connect an external webcam to your Mac. (With more than one camera, iMovie will show both.)
      • Launch iMovie and select the external cam as the video recording source.
      • Point the external cam at your Mac's display.
      • Launch Skype and verify that your built-in iSight is the cam that Skype will use.
      • Start your Skype call and set the window size, brightness, and location.
      • Adjust the iMovie cam to show the part of your display you want to record and start recording.
Call Recorder seems a much better ways to record your Skype videos than either of these.
*For Snow Leopard users wanting to record Skype video*: you can record your entire display regardless of what app is running by using the QuickTimeX (version 10.x) that is bundled with Mac OS X 10.6.x. (10.5.8's QuickTime does not offer this screen recording feature.) QTX records only the full screen, so a product like Call Recorder may still be of interest to SL users who want to record less than full screen calls.

  • Can I Use iSight as A Microphone or My Built in iBook Microphone?

    Good Morning Everyone,
I have to do a audio project for school. I was wondering if I could use my built in iBook microphone, or my iSight as a microphone in GarageBand to record my voice, then burn the track to a CD. Does anyone know if I can do this??
    Thanks Alot,
    Tom Frank

The iSight doesn't work with GB (sampling rate of 48,000 instead of 44,100). The built-in mic does, however you'll record a lot of your iBook's fan noise.
Why do you want to do it in GB in the first place? There's audio recording programs out there that will do the job and can be adjusted to the camera's microphone.

  • Multi-way video chat using iSight--problem.

On the Apple website, when you multi-way chat (with more than one person) using iSight it is supposed to have all of them set up as though you are looking at each person in a different pane, almost like sitting around a table. See here: http://www.apple.com/imac/isight.html
When I tried it tonight with two buddies who have MacBooks (I have an iMac) it didn't look like that. It had two panes (like a book that is standing open) and on the left pane it said who had invited me to chat (in white letters on a black background) and on the right there were three panes right on top of each other, each one flattened out. The middle pane had a frozen/distorted shot of me and the top and bottom had distorted (though moving) video of my two buddies--not at all the way it's supposed to look from the website. Although, it did have the small video pane of me in the center bottom (as the website shows).
    Any ideas?

    Hi mac westwood,
    Welcome to the  Discussions
Do you get this on every multi-chat ?
Have you restarted iChat between tests ?
    Restarted the Computer ?
    Repaired permissions ?
    Run the Cron Scripts ?
    Tried the Combo Install ?
