This often happens when iTunes is not up to date. Try updating iTunes to the latest version, then try updating your phone again.

I cannot get help from Apple support because i am being asked to supply the serial number which is stored on the phone and I cannot restore my data in the first place. I am reluctant to "Set up as a new Iphone" since I don't know whether if I do I may not then be able to access my data from Itunes...
Please advise what to do. I did not see any tutorials on Youtube to help me with this.

If you resintall iTunes, it should fix the issue. The following document will go over how to remove iTunes fully and then reinstall. Depending on what version of Windows you're running you'll either follow the directions here:

I am unable to upgrade iphoto 8.12 to access photo streaming. It gives an error message when I try to update

I go to Learn More next to the message

If you have iPhoto 8.x and want to access photostreaming, you need to buy iPhoto 9 from the App store or buy the iLife '11 package. Have you already purchased iPhoto 9 from the App store?

Since upgrading to FireFox 6 I cannot run Firefox in Avast Sandbox - get error "This application has failed to start because xul.dll was not found". Firefox works fine outside Avast Sandbox.

It suggests re-installing may fix the problem but I've un-installed and re-installed firefox a number of times and no change.

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

* Uninstall your current Firefox version.
* Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
* It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

I am receiving this error message repeatedly, but it doesnt feature in any of the error code or message lists.
I have completed all the steps such as updating itunes, removing any other
USB devices, rebooting etc

Are you sure your phone is a 3GS and not a 3G? 3G IPhone cannot be updated any higher than iOS 4.2.1 and this might be the reason why you are getting the not compatible error.

By the way, Mattban and Sancasslano, are either of you also experiencing any of the following issues:
* Problems with Contacts either crashing or listing no names
* Problems with turning iCloud on or off for application under Settings->iCloud... On both mine I just get a pop up saying that iCloud is being turned off but Contacts then just locks up.
* General problems when trying to synch applications on the iPad or iPhone over iCloud?
I am wondering if all these issues are in someway related to and whether it is worth trying to turn off iCloud somehow, though I cannot work out how this can be done once set up.

Crazy lag issues upgrading from OS 10.58 to OS 10.6, what gives?

I've just upgraded to OS 10.6 from OS 10.5.8 on my 3.06ghz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac and pretty much everything has slowed down considerably. I've got 4gigs and 800 mhz of memory and my computer was lightning fast running 10.5 so I'm pretty sure that's not the issue.
My main problem is that I'm no longer able to "spacebar" preview any files without extremely long lag times. Trying to preview video, music, and .PSD files takes 5 minutes to load in some cases even for a 10mb file. I'm in the process of editing over 200 video clips and this has basically prevented me from using this machine at all.
Additionally I made the mistake of deleting Quicktime 10 because the interface was horrendous and sticking with Quicktime 7 since I had already purchased a pro code for it. Even though Quicktime 7 is still on my computer all of my audio and video files are now opening in the "Grapher" utility by default, which is extremely annoying and ridiculous. How can I make Quicktime 7 my default again?
Anyone have any idea what would cause these issues and more importantly what can I do to resolve them?

Try restarting in Safe Mode, this clears some of the caches it's possible one has become corrupted. You should also Repair Disk Permissions using Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility) and I'd also recommend doing a SMC reset (maybe even 2) and reset the PRAM.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

It just stays on screen with USB and the iTune picture. What can I do to get it going again. I only tried to upgrade because I was prompted to up-grade and now I am helpless. I did a backup before starting the upgrade. The error message did not tell what to do next. Any help is very much appreciated.

Usually that means the iPhone was hacked to unlock it from the original
carrier .
Updating the operating system locks it back to that original carrier
