Type-ahead like in address book?

I'm developing a simple app that displays a list, on selection the item details are displayed. Since the list is very long, I'm looking for type-ahead capability like the address book has (e.g. on 6310i). Is this possible with MIDP?

I did something along those lines for my own list control.
the best idea i had was that i didn't try to guess what letter the user meant to get, but rather worked off the numeric sequence. I matched all possible combinations of letters from the number keys hit so far.
Turned out this worked really well, you could get down to a few hits out of 2-300 within 3 or 4 keypresses.

How to Change the Font Type for Printing Pocket Address Book?

I am new to the Mac and was entering in my contact info into the Address Book in hope of creating a Pocket Address Book (PAB). When I attempt to print out the PAB the default font is courier. When I click on "set" and access other font types, sizes, etc., I can't seem to find a way to apply or save the font type that I choose. In short, it stays as courier. I found an archived thread in a forum that suggests to validate the font I want - which I did and it was already validated - and otherwise I cannot seem to change it from courier. Any help on how to get the font I select to be applied instead of courier would be GREATLY appreciated!

I have programmed iCal and Address book to sync via MobileMe. The info I type in iCal and Address Book on the MacBook Pro gets updated on the iPad, but not the other way around. Any hints?

IOS5 on iPad1, iPad2 and iPhone4S all with iCloud on. Lion 10.7.2 installed on my MacBookPro and iCloud set up/on. Any new iCal entry on either iPad or on the iPhone ends up via iCloud on both iPads and iPhone. BUT NOT ON THE MacBookPro. And iCal entry on the MacBookPro does NOT GET SENT to iCloud.com or to either iPad or the iPhone. This is a huge problem for me because I do all my office scheduling on the iPad or iPhone but rely on the MakeBookPro to print out daily client lists. I REALLY need to get this fixed...it is causing major business issues. " No one so far has had a fix.... :(

Can I group contacts like in Address book

I think the answer (at least for now) is no, but I figured I'd ask.
On my ipod, I can view my photos by "album", I can view my calendar by "calendar" why can't I view my Address' by "Group".
This would make things a lot easier. I'd also like the option to view by company vs. by person. Maybe I can do that by clicking the "Company" checkbox in address book. I imported everything from my palm desktop, and for contacts without a name this seemed to happen.
FYI - I'm on mac using ical, addresss book, and iphoto as source apps for the ipod.

I don't think so. It seems that the iPod software reads in all vcf files in the Contacts folder or any subfolders and then sorts and displays them in one list. I tested this by creating a subfolder "friends" in the Contacts folder and dragging my iSync.vcf file into it. Doing so made no noticable difference in how contacts were displayed on the iPod.
Looking at the iSync.vcf file in a file editor it doesn't appear that any group information is recorded in the vCard entries, so even if the iPod software could display people in groups the sync process between Address Book and the iPod doesn't include the group information.

Applications Icon in Dock looks like Address Book

Hi -
I'm suspicious about why my Applcations icon in the dock doesnt look like the Applications icon in the Finder window. Instead it looks like the Address Book with something hiding behind it. Really!
Is this correct?
If not, how do I remedy this?

I believe you have the folder set to "Display as Stack". In this display mode the dock icon tries to show you the icon representing the topmost object in the folder, which is usually Address Book in the case of the Applications folder. You can have the dock display the Applications folder as just a folder by clicking and holding the button down on the Applications dock icon (or control clicking on it) and selecting that option in the list of options that appears.

Address book in Lion tries to send updates to wrong URL in carddav server

As the title says. We have lion with address book. Out of the box.
We have a caldav carddav server that has been used with older macs no problem, and iphones work perfectly also with the server.
This is the problem.
The account is set up on the address book app, and the initial connection works perfectly.
After adding username, password and server address, the address book application finds the correct contacts at the following URL:
/principles/users/[email protected]
You can see this url if you go to the preferences/accounts. You cant edit the URL, which is strange, as you can in iCal (ical works perfectly BTW)
Initial read from the server is fine.
If we change a contact on the server, then click on the address book application, you see the spinner for a second, and the new changes can be seen.
If you make a change on the address book, the changes are NOT reflected on the carddav server.
Both Macbook and server on on same LAN
Server ip address is 10.200.200.51
The port is 8008
The principle URL is /principals/users/[email protected] (which is shown in the address book app as correct)
However, when the address book is changed, and it tries to update the server we see the following on the macbook logs as it is trying to update the server:
You will notice it looks like the address book is trying to connect to a folder that does not exist on the server.

What is interesting is that ical works perfectly (in both directions)
Im not sure if the '%40' in the address book app for the '@' symbol is an issue??
The server path url in address book is not editable as it does not sit in a editable field, unlike it is in ical.
Either way, both the ical and address book find the principle URL correctly, but the address book app then uses a different url when it tries to connect to upload changes made on the address book app.
Any help would be really appreciated!! :-) Maybe there is a way to change the URL in a settings file somewhere???

I have a similar issue. My initial iCloud sync works fine and then when I try to merge a contact I get an error. My iCloud doesn't sync after the initial sync it seems.

Address Book Sync is gunking up my MacBook Pro!

Everytime I first start up my MacBook from either sleep or first turning it on, it's ridiculously slow - everything I type takes about 30 seconds to show up on the screen while the little rainbow pinwheel does its thing. I took a look at the Activity Monitor, and it looks like the Address Book Sync that happens every time the system first starts up is crashing everything else - as soon as I Force Quit the application, it's smooth sailing. I'm wondering if there's a way to make it so the Address Book syncs only when I ask it to, so I don't have to wait 10 minutes to use my computer after first turning it on? Has anyone else had this problem?

Put one unique entry in both iCal & Address Book on your Mac. These entries can be fake, that doesn't matter, just make sure Address Book & iCal are not empty. Then when you select to sync contacts & calendars on the Info pane in iTunes, you'll get a merge or replace prompt. Select merge.

Simplify Address Book Search on 5230.

I was previously using E71 and recently switched to 5230 touch screen phone.
One thing that i really find it difficult is to find contact in address book. The search function bring up entire A-Z keys in 2 pages so flipping through the character set is little annoying... further as u type .. the key set narrows (good feature) but then u have to look hard for the next key as the position has changed!!....I wonder if the search functionality similar to N72 (t9) is implemented here so that all the keys are visibile on single screen...(in home screen the dialer is the best place to implement... as u type the character the address books gets filtered)..
The character set flipping and changing position every time takes lots of effort ... i would rather like to use a fix character set (the standard number+abc keypad) on same screen and see the adress get filter insted of flipping pages and trying to see where the next char is....
May i request the moderator to pass this message to 5230 team so that they might consider this a new feature request and we might get this feature in next Firmware release...

just to add a bit.. on 5230 this settings are
setting -> phone -> touch Input -> Adaptive Search.
Also i discovered another good way... tag a person to symbo... quite helpful.

Palm to Address book

I currently keep all my contacts in Palm Tungsten T3 and Palm Desktop 4.2.1
How can I transfer all my Palm contacts to Address Book?
Also is there a way to synchronize the T3 with Address Book AND the Palm Desktop every time I do a HotSync?

You can certainly transfer your existing Palm Desktop contact records to the Address Book. Just launch the Palm Desktop and export them as vCard records using the Export… option under the File menu.
Select Module: Addresses, Items: All xxx Addresses and Format: vCard and then press the Export button.
Double-clicking on the resulting vCard file will launch the Address Book and offer you an opportunity to import these contacts.
You cannot, however, synchronize the same data type—contacts, for example—with more than one application at the same time, particularly not with iSync and the iSync Palm Conduit. While it is possible to create custom sets of non-conflicting identical data types with the Missing Sync for Palm OS, this practice can place your data at significant risk. Variations in data mapping in the conduits that synchronize such data, that fact that several releases of Palm contact applications are available, and limitation inherent in OS X applications like the Address Book can create issues involving missing fields, duplicated data and duplicated records.
I would advise you to pick a suite, and stick with it. You can choose from…
• the Palm Desktop with the standard Palm conduits and the HotSync Manager
• iCal and the Address Book using iSync, the iSync Palm Conduit and the HotSync Manager
• Mark/Space Contacts with the Address Book and Mark/Space Events and Tasks with iCal using the Missing Sync for Palm OS

Need to import excel address book into google or iphone?

This is my scenario - a very close friend had his 4000+ contact list on Novell Groupwise but was let go from his job, he was able to grab the list and export it to Excel. When I view this list it has all of the info and each column seems correct like Column a has the Name to show, column B is email, Column C is Phone and so on. What is the best way to get this list onto his iPhone?

Save the Excel list as a .csv (comma-separated value) file.
Address Book can import .csv files.
Once the contacts are in Address Book, they can of course be synced to iPhone.
The process is described in more detail if you open the Help file for Address Book and search on "importing." There's a topic called Importing Contacts from Other Applications.
If you are in GMail and you click Contacts, and the More menu, there is an Import command. That, too, imports .csv files, so the same file you exported should work there too. The help text on that page says "...We also support importing vCard from apps like Apple Address Book." Which means you could also start from Address Book and export as vCard instead of CSV.

CSV and vCard are industry standards for contact list exchange, so at least one of these formats will work with almost any mail program anywhere, from Apple Mail to Microsoft Outlook to Yahoo Mail etc. etc.

Address Book application no longer launches

I broke my laptop a few weeks ago and had the data manually retrieved and put on a hard drive. I bought a new macbook pro earlier and I was manually transferring the application files when i think i accidentally overwrote the address book application. Note my old computer was using tiger - so every time I try to launch address book it says something like this address book doesnt work with this version of Mac OS X. So I deleted Address Book from application and ran the 10.5.3 update. Address Book is back, but now has no logo (it looks like the application logo) and doesn't do anything when I click on it.
How do I get my address book back!?

An update won't replace the whole program. You either need to get it from the instal DVD or copy from a Leopard version, then run update, again.
Pacivist will allow you to pull individual programs off the install DVD.

Address book in Mavericks

After installing Mavericks over Snow Leopard, what happens to the address book?
I see what looks like the address book in contacts in Mail, but how do you edit it?

I have the following problem. When I updated to Mavericks (from snow leopard), the folder name "Address Book" did not change into "Contacts".
I could see that all data were still there (library/application support/address book/metadata) but when I opened "contacts" in dock it displayed "0" elements.
I could display my contacts only through Mail, which is very strange, because I could not open it in Contacts.
Again, my identity in Mail was wrong: I received the eMails with the name of client of mine (who is in my address book). The address was correct, but the label was and is still wrong.
Then I've changed the folder name from "address book" into "contacts" and now, when I open it from the docks, it display 2 elements.
1) Apple GmbH (Ltd. in Germany)
2) My personal contact data (but I had to enter all my data again). Concerning this I my be wrong but I think that before it displayed my contact/identity as "me" and now it doesn't (name/family name/company...)
I can't retrieve the data in the metadata folder.
Any idea?

Address book searching failures revisited

I tried the solution given here:

However, if I type "rag" in the address book search field, it finds two contacts without highlighting any string within them. Furthermore, I can't see "rag" there.

Calendar using iphoto / Address book

I am trying to create a calendar using iphoto and for any reason is not letting me add a photo to a specific date. Also is not showing the icons on the botton of the screen, such as iweb and others icons that is supposed to show. I have watched the instructions available on the site and I could see that the icons does not appear on the iphoto screen also when I click into a specific date in order to add a picture for that date nothing happened it means is not allowing me to add a photo. Can someone let me know how can I add those icons on the botton of the iphoto screen and also how to fix the calendar so I can add a photo.
I am using the latest version of iphoto, this computer is brand new and I am a new user of apple.
Address Book, in the apple site show the address book has a view as adress book the one you buy on the store in my computer is showing just like a page not really like an address book, can you tell me how can I change this view.

Are you using iPhoto 11? Then you should update your profile as it's go you using 10.5.6 and that can't be.
All you need to to is drag a photo from the photo bin on the right into the date area.
To get the photo tray click on the Photo button at the bottom right of the iPhoto window.

Address book search now does not find contacts older contacts in 8310

Hi from a new subscriber, and Thanks for any help! A month ago my 8310 Curve, v. 4.5.0.55 (Platform 2.7.0.68) service provider O2, stopped being able to search and find Contacts unless I had added them after that date. These newer Contacts have not been folded into the original Address Book, but are all in a new and alphabetised list at the end of the original Contacts list. There are no Categories assigned, no Network sync, and Content is not protected. The Contacts are in the phone, not on the SIM.
Before this, I could type in to the Address Book or the phone the first 2-3 letters of someone's name and it would take me to that contact - now it says there's no such person. So I have to scroll through the entire address book to get to who I want, and then I can call/SMS etc.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated! Thanks.

First off, do a simple reboot: With the BlackBerry device powered ON, remove the battery a few seconds and then reinsert the battery to reboot.
Does this fix your address book?
If not, let me ask if you have added a Gmail email address in the past month, about when this odd behaviour began?
Can you look at Options > Status > press the Meny key > Database Sizes.
Scroll down to Address Book, do you see more than one listed?
