Unable to Burn to Sony Brand DVD-Rs

I tried Sony's accucore 1-8x and 1-16x brand DVD-Rs in the finder and using Toast and I get a Sense Key Hardware Error every time. Maxel brands seem to work fine. The Sony disks worked in my DUAL layer Powerbook drive and in my dual layer G5 just fine, so I was very surprised. I had thought that Sony were makers of high quality disks. Am I wrong? Can anyone duplicate this? I tried various different burning speeds, even 1x. No dice. I purchased mine at staples (two different batches) and they came in a gold wrapper-colored spindle.
PS. I have the UJ-857 burner with firmware version HBE4

Follow-up:
I am now also able to definitively say that all my previously burned home movies (toast and imovie generated) that were burned from my previous G5 Powermac to any Imation 8x DVD+R disks will not mount on my macbook's UJ-857. When I put any of them in, it mounts as a blank DVD and the finder asks me what to do. I tried this with about 10 different finalized imation DVD+R disks. The frustrating thing is that they all are scratch free and play fine in my standalone DVD player(s). Can anyone else duplicate this problem? I am wondering if I have a defective superdrive. It burns maxell DVD-Rs fine. It also seems to play rental store DVDs just fine as well.
Why is my drive so picky? I know for a fact that the Imation disks were high-quality disks purchased at retail locations (staples, etc)

  • Unable to Burn (Backup) Library to DVD

    Hello,
Recently I have been receiving the following message when I attempt to backup my library using iPhoto," The burn to the PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K04L drive failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry."
I have performed this operation in the past. I recently even tried formatting my drive and reinstalling all software.
    Any suggestions?
    Many thanks,

i thought id provide you with results of my effots this may or may not help you.
firstly what i have noticed is that when you select to burn the dvd, ie share > burn > you will then get the burn disc options, if the speed is set to 1x and is greyed out, then this will fail.
i was attempting to burn a whole dvd, with under 100mb free on the final dvd. my work around was to choose a small folder / album you wish to burn, folow the above step, ensuring the speed of the dvd burner is not greyed out, do not burn at this stage, cancel the burn, select some more folders, go back to the option, just making sure it is not greyed out, continue this until you have selected all the album you want to backup and the option is still selectable. i did this in three steps selecting 1.5gig each step. it has worked for me, on this occassion, but i now have another 2 problems, not related to this issue, i hope.
ill keep you posted with developments, although i dont expect many on this issue now, due to the other issues.

  • Matshita DVD-R UJ 857-E (unable to burn CDs but reading DVDs and CDs)

I have had the macbook and burner for about three years.
I am unable to burn cds. When I attempt to do so in iTunes or Toast the error message reads "please insert a recordable cd". I have used the same cds to burn on other computers so I believe this is a problem with my drive and not the cds I'm trying to record to.
I am able to burn DVDs in Toast.
Any ideas? I'm looking for a driver right now...

I truly believe this is a software issue. I changed the system settings of the CD/DVD (system profiler) of "when inserting a blank CD to 'open finder' " ( u can use 'ask me' but I didn't have that option) instead of opening iTunes. Once the CD was mounted I was able to burn to the disk in iTunes as well as iPhoto. I was unable to that when I just inserted the disk from the program when prompted.

  • Unable to burn data to a DVD

I've got a brand new Samsung model SE-218BB portable DVD burner plugged into my Macbook Pro 8,2. Every time I tr to burn data to a DVD, it tells me The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 268435459). This is after it seems to get to 100%. I'm running 10.8.4. I tried googling this error but haven't had much luck.
I tried calling Samsung but their support is a mess. I tried rebooting, but that didn't help. Anyone have any suggestions?

What did Samsung tell you when you called?  You really need to deal w/them since it's their product you are having problems with.  If they are of no help, return their product, get your $$$ back & purchase a burner that is Mac friendly when it comes to tech support.

  • Unable to Burn Anything to Dual Layer DVD

    Greetings,
I have a new Memorex MRX-530LE dual layer burner, and I have verified that I do have the latest firmware from the manufacturer.
I am able to burn dual-layer DVDs with no difficulty using NERO. I am unable to burn a dual-layer DVD backup with iTunes 8. I have verified this with two different brands of DVD+R9 (DL) media, and I have verified that I am easily able to burn backups using single-layer DVD-5 media.
Can anyone verify whether iTunes 8 supports dual-layer at all? I have searched the forum and find nothing more recent than 2006, and am hoping that others have now experienced my situation, since DL media and burners are common today.
Best regards and thanks in advance,
    Scott

Hi. I am having the same problem. I have already done one backup and I want to do an incremental backup, but when I insert the DL+ disc it tells me that I will need 14 disc. My itunes is only 6.5 gigs?
    I think it's a bug.

  • Can no longer burn cd's or dvd's in itunes or iphoto

I have been unable to burn cd's or dvd's in itune or iphoto.  I can watch them copy pictures from them and listen to music.  Does this mean that the burner is dead, or has something happened during the upgrades?

  • Burning 130 min onto DVD

Hello, I have a movie that I made that is 130 minutes. I am unable to burn this using i dvd unless i choose a lower quality. Does anyone have other options that would keep the picture quality integrity.
I thought that I might have to break the movie into two sections and burn two dvds, or edit 10 minutes out to fit it onto one dvd. Any ideas. Thank you.

It would be very nice if iDVD could use compressed audio like AC3 (or M1A) instead of using uncompressed PCM. In long DVDs the PCM audio starves video the bandwidth it really needs. For example:
With 120 minutes the 1536 kb/s PCM audio takes a whopping 1.3 GB of the DVD and leaves only an average of about 3452 kb/s for the video.
A good quality compressed 384 kb/s AC3 audio would take only 0.3 GB/120 minutes leaving about 4604 kb/s for the video (192 kb/s AC3 audio would leave about 4796 kb/s for the video -- not a very big difference compared to 384 kb/s audio).
So even with good quality compressed audio, there would be considerably more bandwidth available for the video with long DVDs.
I don't know why iDVD uses bloated PCM. Maybe it is less demanding to simply use noncompressed audio (iDVD 5 seems to sometimes have trouble even with that Or maybe there are licensing issues.
BTW, the following handy formula calculates the average video bitrate to use to fill up a DVD disc based on the selected audio bitrate:
Video Rate [in bps] = (598566666 / Time [in minutes]) - Audio Rate [in bps]
    For example:
    (598566666 / 120 [in minutes]) - 1536000 [in bps] = 3452055 b/s = 3452 kb/s

  • HT5899 How can I burn iPhone video to DVD to view on a TV please?

I have an iMac Mountain lion and 4S iPhone.  I have imported my iPhone video into iMovies but am unable to burn video to a DVD that will play on a TV (it will only play on a computer). Can any one help please?

iMovie is not DVD authoring software. You need to use a professional DVD authoring software like iDVD (Apple discarded it on new Macs in the past 2-3 years, if you dont have it, give another alternative AppGeeker DVD Creator here a whirl) to burn and create a playable DVD that can be played on an ordinary DVD player.

  • Unable to burn any brand of DVD-R

Anybody have this problem (and solution?)? I have been trying all different brands of DVD's: Verbatim, Maxell, Memorex, Fujii, TDK using Toast Titanium. I tried to burn disk images and DVD-Video from VIDEO-TS and I keep getting, no matter the brand, the immediate indication "Writing Lead-Out" followed by a dialogue box saying "the disc failed to be written". I've tried using disk utility and it does not work either. It does not seem be the brand. Any suggestions or work arounds? Ihave been using DVD-R.

    hi ben--
the first thing i would do is booting to open firmware holding apple-option-o-f and typing in the following commands--
    reset-nvram (hit return)
    set-defaults (hit return)
    reset-all (hit return)
the last command will restart the computer. if that does nothing i would reset the pmu/smu. i do not know your exact model. instructions should be in your user guide. button is usually on the bottom left of the logic board. you have to ground yourself, press it once counting one one thousand, and then let go. some of the newer power macs reset it by simply unplugging the power cord from the power supply at the back of the machine for a couple minutes. hope that works. • Unable to Burn DVD due to Verification Failure

I am trying to make a backup copy of my Leopard Install DVD. It is a 7.2 GB file so I used Disk Utility to make a disk image of the DVD, then tried to burn the disk image to a Sony DVD+R Dual Layer disk (8.5 GB). Everything seemed to be working just fine, the burn process completed but at the very end I got an error message stating: Unable to burn "MAC OS X Install DVD Copy" (verification of the burn failed)
Is this a factor of the media used or something else? The disk image I created on my desktop appears to be fully functional. I put a copy of the disk image on a backup drive but I would prefer to have it on DVD media if possible.

    Hi Howwow,
Yes I was stuck with Sony DVD+R DLs tonight but thought I would try one anyway. I have to use a Dual Layer DVD due to the file size. From my reading on these forums it seems the DVD+R DLs are recommended. Single Layer DVDs seems to favor DVD-R for burning. I have heard that the Verbatim brand seems to burn well with consistency. I will try to locate some Verbatim DLs of both types tomorrow unless anyone has other specific suggested media or reasons for the verification failure.
    Thanks for the input.

  • No 1x burning with Sony DVD RW DW-Q28A

My 2.7 GHz/Dual Power Mac G5 comes with the Sony DVD RW DW-Q28A. I am unable to burn a DVD at 1x. Why would I want to burn at 1x you ask? At lot of DVD Players will only recognize 1x and 2x burned disks. We have the ridiculous situation of having to create DVD's with the Dual G5 and then transferring our creation to an 800 MHz iMac in order to burn at 1x so that people don't return the DVD's. My daughter recently had her PowerBook fixed by Apple. I noticed that part of the fix was installing a Matshita DVD-R UJ-825. That drive is also able to burn at 1x speed. Is it that this Sony model is "speed challanged" or is it just a problem with my drive?
I don't even know if buying 1x and 2x media is a solution with this particular drive. I have also read that there might be a firmware upgrade available for it. Unfortunately, from the directions I read, I would need to remove the drive and use an external USB connection with Virtual PC or install it on a PC and flash there. Are there no other solutions?

    PowerPC G5/Dual 2.7 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.1)

There is no official Apple firmware update for your
drive - using non-Apple firmware will void your
    drive's warranty.
Regarding your trying to burn 1x: Try another brand
of DVDs and make sure that their speed rating
    includes 1x
The same brand I used to burn on the laptop at 1x was used on the G5. It just seems that the Sony drive is "too stupid" (okay tha'ts not a technical term - lol) to listen to Toast when I request a 1x burn. On the Powebook with the non-Sony drive when I tell the software to burn the disk at 1x, it does, taking over 40 minutes. The blank DVD's I'm using are Verbatim 16x that are rated "up to 16x".
Just to make it even more clear, I have no problems burning 16x discs using the Sony drive. They are readable when used on my computer and on very modern DVD players that have DVD drive transports originally designed for PCs. They just won't play, for instance, on my Sony DVP-S500D which is a much older machine. When I burn at 1x on the iMac or Powerbook it plays fine on the S500D.
At the end of the day, if the drive won't burn at 1x what's the difference if Apple voids the warranty on a drive that can't be used for the purpose for which it was intended -- namely the creation of DVD's that will play to a wide range of DVD players.

  • Unable to burn DVD's

I own a PowerMac G4 with combo drive, 768 SDRAM running Tiger 10.4.3. Purchased a LaCie d2 DVD RW external burner to save my Quicktime movies made with iMovie. Using the software included Toast 6, I am unable to burn a DVD. Numerous calls to tech support over a 2 1/2 month period yielded no help. I returned the unit and received a new one. Same error messages on both units.
" Connection not stable" "Disk failed to be written". I changed the ports on both the computer and burner as well as purchasing a new firewire cable. No change. The only disk that I was able to burn 2 months ago was very pixilated.
    Anyone else have this problem?
    Any suggestions?
Sorry for the length of the post, but I tried to include as much info as possible
    PowerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Make sure you've installed the most recent Toast update from Roxio.com. If yours is Toast 6 Lite, the current version is 6.1. If it is Toast 6 Titanium it is 6.1.1. Those are required for Macs running 10.4.x.
I believe your error message may be due to poor-quality media. Most often this message appears when using DL media other than Verbatim DVD+R DL. Try using a different brand of quality media.
Another possibility is that your Mac has an OS problem related to its Firewire. These usually can be fixed by downloading and applying Apple's 10.4.4 combined system updater (even though you are already using 10.4.4).
LaCie has a firmware update on its support site. Download and apply it to update the drive's firmware. If the drive doesn't need updating the firmware updater will tell you so. Firmware updates typically increase the brands and speeds of media that the drive will burn to successfully.

  • Unable to burn DVD-R, CD-Rs burn fine

    Hello,
Hoping someone can help me here. I'm trying to burn some files to dvd-r, and getting a message "Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed. (Error code 0x80020022)". I've tried different brands of DVD-R (Sony being the latest), tried the suggestion to create another user account and try burning under that (same error message), tried burning via toast (similar error message). I'm at my wits end.
The problem started several weeks ago, but I did no update/etc. that I can think of that would affect this.
Does anyone have any idea what may be going on?

Hi James, It's still possible another brand of Media would work, (Sony is the worst one for me),...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=884305
But the CD & DVD parts of the Drive use different Lasers, circuits, & voltages, so it is possible for just one to go out.

  • Unable to burn AUDIO to DVD or Disk image, video is fine

As many other posts have stated; I am unable to burn the Audio portion of an iDVD nor does "save as disk image" transfer the audio of my iDVD. Transferred an iMovie, (an iPhoto set of photos with iTunes audio imported into iMovie) to iDVD. Audio plays on iMovie, audio plays on iDVD preview. Tried removing recommended ~com.apple.iXXX.plist, no help. Tried different encoding methods: i.e. Best/High/Professional. Tried saving to different sizes HD/Large/etc. Tried Share Media in iTunes, Media Browser, etc. Checked Main Audio, volume slider bar in iDVD. Tried importing audio into iDVD rather than transferring from iMovie. It doesn't seem to matter how I build the iDVD it works, until I go to Save As Disk Image or Burn DVD. Video works great (better in Large than HD) Audio doesn't transfer.
21 total minutes, 1.15GB of final iDVD using a default theme.

    Hi
(an iPhoto set of photos with iTunes audio imported into iMovie) to iDVD
Yes this is the problem - in iTunes there is a copy-protection that moves over
    Result
    • Plays well in iMovie
    • Plays well in iDVD preview
    • Silent on DVD
Only way around this is to in iTunes collect needed audio into a play-list
Burn this out as an Audio-CD and .aiff (NOT .mp3)
Use the audio on this CD in Your iMovie project.
