Unable to combine microcsoft word or rtf files when creating a .pdf

We cannot add microsoft word or .rtf files when trying to combine them into a single .pdf file..
When you click on Add files..the word or .rtf files are greyed out and you
cannot select them..
We are using Mountain Lion OS (ltatest version) and adobe acrobat version 10.1.5

Before Acrobat XI, it was only possible in Windows, not on a Macintosh.

"In previous versions of Acrobat, Mac users were stymied when you wanted to open a Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or Excel file into Acrobat to convert it to PDF, or to include these files when combining documents together. Now, if you have Microsoft Office installed on your Mac, you can include these files. (There are still no PDF Maker plug-ins installed on the Mac, and hyperlink and bookmark export from Word is not yet supported.)"

  • Log files when creating a pdf from PDFMaker Office COM addin

    Hello,
I just bought Acrobat Standard to create pdfs on Word 2013.
I'm making a catalog using this two softwares, Word 2013 (latest version with all updates) and Acrobat XI (latest version, 11.0.06). Unfortunately things are not working as I wish, and on some documents almost at the end of the transformation process, it can't save the pdf file or it gives a major word error, exiting word.
When the transformation process is running/ending, are there any logs created to see what happens in case of errors?? If yes, where can I look up for them??

Sorry, but when the pdf is created or not (like when happens on this particulary case), I don't see any logs on the same folder.
Let me try to explain my problem in depth.  I have a docx, a big file with 200 pages. It's created with Word 2013 but using the 2010 docx format for compatibility reasons. I beggun using the Word x64 but now I'm using the x86 and the problem happens on both and in the same ways.
First. If I try to convert the whole document, most of the times (I'd say 70%) the pdf doesn't get created or the rest of the times (30%) It causes a crash to Word with a dll error. Normally it halts (whether it doesn't create the pdf of halts word) at a certain page, after repaginanting all pages and when it says that is creating page nº X.
I already pinpoint, more or less, where the error is. The error is located on the first pages, more exactly on the index pages. It's not a index created by the Word, it is a set of pages that I manually built with a grid of pictures with each one having a hyperlink to a designated bookmark to a desire page on the document. If I "pdfmaker" the rest of the whole document (without the index pages) I can get the pdf created.
So, the index is where the problem resides. On this thread, http://forums.adobe.com/message/5816803#5816803 , you will see that I had a another problem due to the method used on Word 2003 about hyperlink of images that no longer works (when exporting to pdf) on the latests words versions, at least on the Word 2013. The pdf file was created with no problem, but on the pdf the hyperlinks were not created due to something that M$ has resolved to change between Word 2003 and Word 2007. I found a way to fix that (listed on that thread link). But as I like to invent, on the Field box, on the field options, for this time, I decided to choose the option "Data not stored with the document". That is what is breaking the pdf conversion. Too bad. Now I have to clear the index all the way and start again from the beggining but without that option. I already remake 3 pages and after the conversion the pdf is created. I have to finish the index redone once again and then create the full pdf document to see if any of those errors/halts happen again.
I just wish to see a adobe log to see what type of error this bug produces so it would be possible to adobe crush the bug
P.S. - Sorry if I was too confusiong for anyone to understand what I'm trying to say here

You may first want to look into Safari's "Installed Plugins" section within the browser. This is (usually) found under the Safari Help header in the top of a browser. I say usually, because I don't use Safari often and mine is an older version. They handle applications and plugins like most others, to a point.
I see in Safari Installed Plugins that mine would use
    application/pdf
    Acrobat Portable Document Format
Acrobat Reader & reader plugin v9.5.5 for web browsers
(in Safari 5.x, where I looked into this)
While I use FireFox, SeaMonkey (Mozilla) and others, where I can choose in preferences the helper applications to open from the browser, Safari has different methods; so if you can change this in the preferences or settings of Safari in a later version I am not certain.
You could see what the defaults are by using Safari help menu to open the Installed plugins, and maybe find out what happend to Adobe reader plugin. Could be it was 'sandboxed' in a later OS X and needs to be installed differently to be accepted as safe.
It is easier to set how a file type is handled once it is inside the computer and not held in the browser; by file type in general or specific to each single document. I do both, and seldom let an a browser do these things due to security considerations. I download and open them, only then if I feel they are safe.
Sorry to not have a specific answer for that anomaly.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Placing Microsoft Word 7 RTF files in PageMaker 6.0 document

I am a weekly newspaper editor. For years I have written my articles on a PC at home using Microsoft Word 2000, saved them to disc as RTF files, transferred the RTF files to our Mac (running OS 9.2.2) at work, and placed them into PageMaker 6.0 documents with no problems.
I now have a new PC at home running Microsoft Office Word 7. When I attempt to place the RTF files produced by Microsoft Word 7 into a PageMaker 6.0 document at work (on the Mac running OS 9.2.2) I get the following error messages: RTF import syntax warning: Unrecognized character set, mac character set used. When I click OK the same message repeats. When I click OK a second time I get a different message:
RTF import syntax warning, unrecognized token.
Is there anything I can do to get these Word 7 RTF files to work with our old Macs?
I forgot to inform you my new PC operating system at home is Windows Vista Home Premium.
    --Roger W. Bonham

You might be able to save your word file as a Macintosh word 6 file or Word 97/98 file. That should help. You might, like Buko suggests, upgrade to PageMaker 6.5 and then get the free upgrade to 6.5.2.
It might also work to save your word file as a text only file.
Upgrading your PageMaker should get rid of your Word woes, but beware of recent Word apps, which have no support from PageMaker.

  • Combining files to create a PDF - stalls, then doesn't work

My organization has just pushed out Office 2013, and one person has had trouble when she combines files to create a pdf. At first, it seems like the process works, but when it comes to the "Merging Files" stage, it hangs up - it doesn't even finish converting the first file. It stays like this for a very long time, then a small pop-up comes up and says "Acrobat failed to send a DDE command."
The reason I bring up Office 2013 is because before we pushed it out, it worked just fine with either the 2010 and 2007, and now I'm wondering if this problem is occurring because of our recent 2013 installations.

    suicot,
Did you ever find a solution to this problem?  I have the same issues.  I can get maybe 3 files (word/excel) to start (slowly) converting then the the stall happens.   Also, Acrobat opens the word / excel application each time it attempts to convert a file, then word/excel freezes and I have to force a close.  What a mess!  (Windows 8.1 / Acrobat X Pro)

  • How to change the default save encoding of the dvm files when create dvm???

When I creating a DVM(domain-value mapping) in Chinese on the ESB control and confirm it, then restarted the SOA service, the DVM that I created in Chinese disappeared from ESB control. All the maps(both English and Chinese ) are in DVM Repository.
After I updated the encoding from ‘UTF-8’ to ‘GB2312’ in the three files below, and restarted the SOA service, the DVM in Chinese appeared on ESB control.
But when I adding the second row in Chinese and save it, then restart the SOA service, the DVM in Chinese disappeared from ESB Control once again. Because the encoding in the three files below is updated from ‘GB2312’ to ‘UTF-8’ .
    Files:
    C:\product\10.1.3.1\OracleAS_1\integration\esb\oraesb\artifacts\store\metadata\files\dvm.def.xml
    C:\product\10.1.3.1\OracleAS_1\integration\esb\oraesb\artifacts\store\metadata\files\dvm\Chinese.xml.def.xml
    C:\product\10.1.3.1\OracleAS_1\integration\esb\oraesb\artifacts\store\content\files\dvm\Chinese.xml_1.0
How to change the default save encoding of the dvm files when create dvm in ESB control ???

I have the same problem.  When I updated to Mavericks now the bookmarks bar font is huge.  I liked it the way it was before.  I liked the smaller font.  Also wish I could change the color of the sidebar and font/folders too.
I tried to see in preferences if there was anyway to change it, but I don't see anything there.

  • How do I automatically delete a .ps file after creating a pdf?

Hi all! I vaguley remember in the past that there is a preference to automatically delete a .ps file after creating a pdf. Can someone remind me of how to do this? I'm using Distiller version 9.2.0. Thank you so much!
    Julie
PS: I'm creating the .ps file from Quark 7, if that makes a difference.

I am unaware of any feature allowing automatic delete of .PS files.
The adobePDF print driver which has been removed in OSX.6.x (Snow Leopard) That you choose when ina Document would go through the following steps in the background this made it slow.
    create .ps File (hidden)
    Checksum Verify the .ps File
    Open Distiller in background (hidden)
    Create Pdf
    Checksum Verify the .pdf File
shut down Distiller in Backgroun (hidden)
    Delete .ps File (hidden)
    Pdf suddenly appears
If at any point in this chain something dies the pdf was not made.
Actually in prior OS to X.3.x the print driver provided for my Hp Inkjet, it was actually better to go to print menu, and choose save as  postscript, then drop the postsript file on distiller and creat the PDF. or just open the ps in Acrobat.
with the PRint Drive provided for my HP Inkjet for X.3 it was changed to  create Postcsript file from PDF.  In the start having the PDF button on print menu. The pdf's were not as good as those created in the AdobePDF driver. But were aceptable for most purposes.

  • Combining Word and Visio Files Through HTML and PDF

I have a Word document and a Visio drawing with multiple pages, and I would like to combine them together into a pdf file.  Both documents have internal links and links to each other, and I would like to maintain them when converting to pdf (so that I do not have to re-add them through Acrobat).  Word anchors are specific words on a page, and Visio anchors are specific pages in the drawing.  I can maintain Word bookmarks as named destinations through OpenOffice, so that isn't a problem.
Originally I was able to accomplish this by converting both of the files to html, linking the html pages to each other, and using the Web Capture feature in Acrobat 5.  However, Word formatting was lost, so I am looking for a way to convert the Word file directly to pdf and still maintain the links.
I was able to make most of the links work properly by saving the Visio file as html pages and linking to those from the Word document.  Then I could export the Word document to pdf, open the file in Acrobat 9 Pro, and Web Capture > Append Links On Page from the table of contents.  However, links from the html (Visio) pages to "file.pdf#destination" do not link back to the same file.  Instead, they try to open another file with the same name and become very confused.
When I tried this in Acrobat 5, it would append another version of the pdf Word document.  However, named destinations would not be maintained, so all of the Visio to Word links would go to the title page of the Word document.
Is there a better way to accomplish this through Acrobat 9 (or Acrobat  5)?
Additionally, Acrobat 9 image map conversion does not seem to work as well as it did in Acrobat 5.  Most of the link boxes are twice as big as they should be, making it difficult to click on anything.  Is there a good way around this?

Basically, the question is: can I combine two interlinked PDF files so that the links in each go to the correct views in the merged PDF?  If not, is there a third-party application that will?
Could I possibly make a PDF Portfolio that maintains the links?  I'd prefer a single file, but that would work as well.

  • Problem displaying Word 2002 RTF files in JEditorPane

    Hi all,
I am having a problem displaying RTF files created in Word 2002/Office XP in a JEditorPane.
Our code, which does the usual stuff:
    JEditorPane uiViewNarrativeEda = new JEditorPane();
    uiViewNarrativeEda.setContentType(new RTFEditorKit().getContentType());
    FileInputStream inDocument = new FileInputStream("c:/temp/testing.rtf"); uiViewNarrativeEda.read(inDocument, "");
    inDocument.close();
works just FINE with RTF files created in Word 97, WordPad etc, but it seems that Word 2002 adds some tags to the RTF file that the RTFReader cannot handle.
For example, I believe the following exception is due to the new \stylesheet section that Word 2002 adds to the RTF file:
    java.lang.NullPointerException:
         at javax.swing.text.rtf.RTFReader$StylesheetDestination$StyleDefiningDestination.close(RTFReader.java:924)
         at javax.swing.text.rtf.RTFReader.setRTFDestination(RTFReader.java:254)
         at javax.swing.text.rtf.RTFReader.handleKeyword(RTFReader.java:484)
         at javax.swing.text.rtf.RTFParser.write(RTFParser.java, Compiled Code)
         at javax.swing.text.rtf.AbstractFilter.readFromReader(AbstractFilter.java:111)
         at javax.swing.text.rtf.RTFEditorKit.read(RTFEditorKit.java:129)
         at javax.swing.text.JTextComponent.read(JTextComponent.java:1326)
         at javax.swing.JEditorPane.read(JEditorPane.java:387)
Does anyone have similar problems or knows how I could get around this?
I thought about writing a parser that replaces the \stylesheet section with one that works but that seems a lot of work and it does not always work (I tried that by copying and pasting...).
Maybe I could replace the RTF converter that Word 2002 is using with another one - but how?

    Hello again,
I found out that the 2002 version of MS Word writes a lot more of data into the file than e.g. Wordpad does.
There is one section that causes the problem, its called "\stylesheet".
My workaround (working in my case) is to wrap the input stream of the RTF document and remove this section (only in memory).
    See example implementation:

  • Unable to combine multi documents in one file

It seems like my Adobe Reader  Acrobat X! is not showing the correct format so that I am able to combine multi documents in one file.  Any suggestions would help.

Are you using Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader?

  • Abobe X Pro needs "additional files to create a pdf..."

    Error message:
Additional files will need to be installed to create PDF from this file.  You must have Administrator privileges to install these files. Please contact your local system administrator.
    1) just an 'ole lady here - on a pc - not a system administrator (though I think have admin rights in windows 7).
    The details:
    a) had a lenovo small format pc running XP - Acrobat X Pro worked fine on this pc, could create pdfs and fillable forms etc.
    b) Just bought a used pc with Windows 7 Enterprise - after a week of issues - duh - I realized X Pro was not working on the new(used) pc, except to let me open a pdf, and even add a text box, or sign or line out a change in a pdf. - that is all it will let me do..
    c) I had a purchased CD of Adobe Pro Standard.  In 2012, I was able to upgrade it to Adobe X Pro 10,  while still on XP, with a digital download, for which I have the registration key.
The X Pro version showing this morning was 10.1.12 (before I uninstalled it, and I assume after various updates).
I've also tried repairing the installation - and selecting the function I need PDFMaker (to work with MS Word) -
I have uninstalled Adobe, and re-installed it, from my old downloaded file the version is 10.0.0
Finally read that I should have deactivated it on the old pc.
Called Support, and they gave me an all new, full version (download) of Adobe X Pro at 5 pm est, and a NEW S/N.
I uninstalled, the old version, ran ccleaner, restarted the pc, installed the new X Pro 10.0.0, used the new s/n and still cannot use Adobe.
Still  can't, create a pdf, combine files from word or create a form from a word doc - nada.  Also, do not seem to have Adobe Reader anywhere on this pc, either (a good thing from what I've read).
When I was on XP I did not have this problem.  Now that I am on Windows 7 Enterprise, I have the problem.
(I am using MS Office 2003 and do plan to update to 2010.  Using Google Apps for Work, small business working from home, did not like Office 365 since I am on a MiFi hotspot for internet (country living))
Maybe all of this was more information than you'd want or need... just was not sure what is is causing the conflict/problem.
Feeling out of my depth with this and really need some guidance / help / specific steps to take - Thanks in advance for your help!

Actually, it's a breath of fresh air getting all of the info needed to help.

  • Hyperlinks not converting when creating a pdf from Word 2010 to Adobe Acrobat 11.0.6

First off, let me say that these are not table of contents hyperlinks.  I have created a document in Word 2010 (not a MAC) with hyperlinks to files residing on our company's intranet.  In Word the hyperlinks work great but when I create the pdf, the links do not work.  I have converted using both PDFMaker from Word and Create a pdf from within Acrobat.  Yes, I have all the boxes checked regarding saving links.  The links appear to work partially.  Meaning that when I hover the cursor over the link, the pointy finger appears but when I click I get a pop-up message telling me the file could not be opened.  Also, when I hover over the hyperlink, the address appears.  So, I think it knows there's a link and it tries to open but can't.  When I create the file within Adobe the link works - once.  When I click on the link I get a pop-up window asking me if I want to save my file before closing.  After my response the file closes and the linked file opens.  However, when I go back into the file and try the hyperlink again, I get the pop-up telling me the file cannot be opened.  HELP!  I am at my wits end.  After spending hours yesterday trying to research (I think I read every thread related to hyperlinks but I am not using a Mac, table of contents or Adobe 7 around which it seems all the prior questions revolve) and futily creating and recreating the pdf (as if doing the same thing repeatedly would somehow magically work) I am about to give up.  This is a document that will be published to our intranet for use by employees which cross-references other documents to which they can refer for additional information.  I would prefer to publish a pdf and not a Word document.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for your input Bill. I've checked the preferences and "view large images" is turned on. It's not all of the images which are missing, only certain ones do not transfer over to PDF.
