  • Unable to open D3 NEF in CS3 (Mac) and CS2 (Win)

I have installed the latest Camera Raw Update file (Mac OSX 10.5.3), but when I try to open a nef-file that was taken with my Nikon D3, CS3 complains about an invalid file type - ??? Opening the same file in Nikon NX works without a problem. A friend of mine who still works with CS 2 on Windows XP (incl. Camera Raw 3.7) has the same problem.
Any idea? Since Nikon NX is opening the file the problem can't come from the camera, right? I apreciate every tip! Thanks in advance.

To answer the first question (from the first message), take a look at the installation instructions and make sure you have placed the plug-in in the exact folder. There is a user folder and a main (?) Folder that are named very similarly, and you must put the plug-in in the right one or it won't work. I apologize, but I have never used by Mac computer so my terminology may not be exactly right.
As far as the second question is concerned, I don't believe the Nikon D60 was supported until after CS3 was released. Ongoing support for Camera Raw is only provided for the current version of Photoshop. Photoshop CS2 might not be very old from your point of view, but in software it is practically ancient history.
The last version of Camera Raw that would work with Photoshop CS2 is version 3.7. If your camera is not supported in that version then you will either have to upgrade your version of Photoshop or else you can use the most current version of the DNG converter to convert your raw files to DNG files. Those can be opened in Photoshop CS2/Camera Raw 3.7.

  • Unable to Copy from my Mac to my external drive? Can you help!

    Hi,
I am a Ex-Windows user who has just invested in a Mac and as you can imagine my knowledge is very limited so im looking for a little help please!
When i connect my Maxtor 350gb external hard drive to my Macbook via its USB lead it appears on the desktop as you would expect but if i try to drag and drop and sort of file onto it i get the following message...
the item "file name" could not be moved because "External HD" cannot be modified
Can someone advise me as to how i can resolve this issue please.
    Regards, T.
Macbook Black   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Tom,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
How did you format that external drive? Open disk utility and select the external drive in the sidebar. Now read what is written in the bottom part of the window. It will say something like "partition-scheme" and when you select the volume it should say something about the "Format".
There are Windows formats and partition schemes that can be read by MacOS X but are read-only. In this case you will have to reformat the drive.

  • Unable to print to Canon iR-Adv C5045 from MacBook Pro that is connected to Windows computer and shared on the network

I am unable to print to a Canon iR-Adv C5045 from a MacBook Pro (OS X 10.9.4) that is connected to Windows NT computer and shared on the company network.  I am connected to the network by ethernet.
I was able to add the printer manually by going to Advanced, Windows printer via spoolss, smb://computer name/printer name and used the Canon iR-ADV C5045/5051 driver.
When I print it appears to be printing but nothing comes out.  I checked the completed jobs from the Print Queue and the job is listed.  Checked the print log on the printer and it isn't listed.  Is there a different driver I should be using for this configuration?

You may not have a choice as to what driver you can use. If the ADV C5045 only has the default UFR2 printer kit, then you will have to use the UFR2 driver - which is what you are using now. If you can access the copier, press the Counter Check button on the control panel. Then on the display you will see an entry labelled Check Device Configuration. Select this and scroll down through the pages. You are looking for an entry called PS. If you see it then the Canon does have the optional Postscript printer kit enabled and this will let you use an alternate driver. One suggestion would be to create the printer again using the same setting that you have done already but this time select the Generic Postscript driver included with the OS rather than use the Canon driver. This will help to determine if the driver is the cause.
If there is no PS option you will have to use the UFR2 driver and this could be the problem, as the Canon drivers don't always work well on a Mac via a Windows share. As a test, are you able to create a print queue directly to the Canon rather than via the Windows share? If you can, then this will let you check if the driver currently installed will work, as there can be settings on the copier that can block/stop you from printing. Assuming that you can print to the Canon with a direct connection from the Mac, then we can work on getting the printing via the shared queue. But if it doesn't print directly from the Mac, then it confirms that it may not be the server and more to do with the copier.

I have Microsoft Office 2004 on my MacBook (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo).  It is currently up to date with Microsoft updates.  I am running Mac OS 10.6.8.  I just updated my Mac software with "Security Update 2012-001".  I am now unable to print (Epson NX510 printer) from Excel or Word.  When I click on the Print menu item in Excel, there is a flash in the background like it is trying to open the print window, but nothing else.  I am able to print from other programs like TextEdit, Mail or KakeidaGraph.  As far as I know I have the latest Epson print driver.
Also, I am also unable to open an existing Excel or Word file from the open menu - both programs lock up and do not respond.  I have to force quit.  After I restart Excel or Word I can open an existing file by double clicking on the file, but if I again try to open another file from the open menu, Excel or Word lock up.
    Any similar problems?

    Howdy,
Apparently some are reporting that this causes the older PowerPC (PPC) applications that are supported in 10.6 via 'Rosetta' to crash upon attempting to open/save/print using any dialog box, or fail in other similar ways such as simply not printing or quitting, or freezing/hanging/crashing of the application.
I have read of some companies that have indeed submitted proper bug reports to Apple, but that is not a guarantee of a bug-fix being issued.
    You might wish to read:
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/snowleopard/index.html#d02feb2012
If you are unsure if you are still using PowerPC apps, if the application is currently running, look under the 'Activity Monitior' (in Applications -> Utilities), or alternatively you could check in the System Profiler, Applications. Check the column "Type".
Here is a fairly simple way you can restore you system and restore you applications functionality again, if you don't have a recent clone or good Time Machine backup that you can restore from. If you do, restore from your backup prior to having installed the Security Update 2012-001.
    Time Machine restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Lion recovery partition (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility. Select the backup prior to your issues, and it will be restored back to the state it was in at that time.
If you can't easily restore from a backup, you can instead do the following:
    - You first start by reinstalling your OS X 10.6.x, this will preserve all your user data, your applications, no worries there.
    - Then install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (links provided below)
    - Make sure you're printers are showing up correctly in your system preferences, if not, re-add the printers
    - Then finally, run the Apple Software Update (by pulling down the Apple Menu), and install any and all remaining updates, except do not then re-install the Security Update 2012-001. It is possible that you may have to reboot after installing some of the updates, and you may even need to run it a 2nd time to make sure that you've got all updates, except NOT the Security Update 2012-001.

  • I am unable to print PDF's using either Adobe Reader or Safari. In Adobe Reader, I get an error message from my Cannon printer that says, "/usr.libexec/cups/filter/pstocupsraster failed". In Safari, I can only print the first page of a PDF.

To try to resolve this problem, I have done the following actions.
    1 - I have run Disk Warrior.
    2 - I have repaired permissions.
3 - I have deleted all plist that are either Cannon or Adobe.
4 - I have downloaded and installed the lastest versions of Adobe Reader and the Cannon printer drivers.
I am still unable to print PDF's.
In Safari, I can print only the first page. In a multipage PDF, Safari only seems to recognize the first page.
In Adobe Reader, I get an error message from my printer: "/usr/libexec/cups/filter/pstocupsraster failed".
Any help would be greatly appreicated!

    Quit Safari.
Open the Library folder in your home folder as follows:

  • Unable to Print 2-Sided on L7780...

Hello...I have a L7780 that has worked fine for approximately a little over one year.  I was printing from Tray #2 (legal-sized paper) the other day & suddenly experienced numerous paper jams.  Multiple times, I had to remove the duplexer, as well as open the print-carriage access door to clear the jams.  Eventually, I was able to resolve the issue & printing resumed in a normal fashion.
Today...I wanted to print a PDF document & found that it was only printing one side of each page; however, 2 sides would successfully print intermittently.  I checked all of my settings & tried again, to no avail.  I thought that perhaps it was the document.  I tried another PDF document & then a Word document...same results.
I aligned & cleaned the printheads, as well as ensured that the printheads were in correctly.  I also calibrated the linefeed.  I checked to make certain that the duplexer was inserted correctly ~ I removed it & reinserted it.  The printer will feed the paper back through, as it always has...it simply will not print on both sides of the paper consistently, as it is supposed to.
I am unable to print a 'Self-Diagnostic' page ~ only a very tiny strip of the heading of this document will print.
I also went into the printer properties to make sure that my accessories were installed...I uninstalled & re-installed them.  I have unplugged & plugged the printer back in the socket.
There are no alerts that come up after the printer boots up & runs through its self-diagnostics.
I have also tried to print from both trays.
Additionally, I installed the S/W listed below...
HP Officejet Pro Full Feature Software And Driver
I am very concerned, as this is a replacement for another printer (different model) & the duplexer was the problem w/the previous printer.  I appreciate any suggestions or input that anyone might have.
I use this printer wirelessly & my OS is Vista Ultimate 64-bit.
    Thank you!

Apparently, I have similar problem as yours. My L7780 wireless all-in-one printer worked perfectly fine for a bit more than a year but now the printer kept on popping an error message that says out of paper, load paper when printing two-sided documents. At first, it prints 2-sided erratically and then deteriorates with that error message popping up after every 2-sided printing attempt.  I have tried every possible solution (e.g. using different tray, fan the paper stack and re-insert, re-startting both printer and computer, and so forth) but none was successful. I paid $500 for this unit with no third party warranty coverage. Sigh...

  • UNABLE TO PRINT TO TOSHIBA FIERY COPIER AFTER 10.6 UPGRADE

I have upgraded my OS to 10.6 and in doing so the OS has killed my printer.
I am printing to a high end Fiery Toshiba e-studio311c.
For those not familiar, a fiery is a rip device, when your Mac prints to it, the desktop printer spools to the Fiery Server, where it prints out directly and then goes into a queue. I didn't have any problems printing on 10.4..
My dedicated rip software which allows me to view and connect to the Toshiba server is still working fine. I KNOW it is not the printer server. I can login and reprint old archived jobs.
The new setup is a joke. I have re-added and reinstalled all my fiery software.
The PPD Drivers I have are old but the most up-to-date.
I have re-setup the printer in both IPP and LPD neither way matters.
If I select the proper PPD the the error I get is
    "Connected to printer…"
"Network host '192.168.1.195' is busy; will retry in 20 seconds…"
    It never completes.
If I select the "Generic CMYK" PPD the the error I get is
    Status: ERROR
"The printer software was installed incorrectly."
"Please reinstall the printer’s software or contact the manufacturer for assistance."
I have called tech support to Apple - Each time I felt like I was getting my teeth pulled. The technicians were like reading from scripts and the solutions offered were, " oh just go back and reinstall 10.4 and be mindful to do a full erase "
    * extend finger * When I asked to be promoted up the tech support ladder I got transferred to another tech (let's lean over to the cube next to us and see if he notices I give him the same lame answers * chuckle chuckle *. This tech gave me the same answers and directed me here
I called Toshiba, which referred me to to the people who sold me the copier,
    They shrugged.
I called Toshiba again, they referred me to their electronic devices division, who referred me to their copier division, which referred me to to the people who sold me the copier, which referred me to to some other division of Toshiba's.
These people were of no help and said we are waiting on EFI - They referred me to Toshiba's PR company, who referred me to Fiery's public relations answering machine. No answers and I don't expect any.
I think this whole mess is directly related to the abandonment of Appletalk in 10.6. Snow tiger needs a warning label on the box. "Warning, blood you see is the 100% magenta from your printer."
At this point, I ask you my internet friends - Any advice? I need work around solutions.

    Hi there.
I have several Canon devices that are using Fiery RIPs (albeit on Canon's they are called imagePASS and imagePRESS). Names aside, I have found that there are a number of limitations with the Fiery drivers on 10.6.
The first is that the driver installer requires Rosetta to be installed on the Mac. If you simply added the printer by browsing to the PPD, then there is a chance that the plugins referenced in the PPD are not present on your Mac and will cause problems with certain printing functions. So, I would suggest that if there is an installer for your model of Fiery, then run that installer but beware that your Mac may need to connect to the Internet to download Rosetta. Alternatively, you can manually add Rosetta by running the Optional Installs package located on your Snow Leopard DVD.
With the driver installed correctly, the error about the software not being installed correctly is due to a permissions error with the cups filter folder. EFI have posted an update that can resolve this error message, providing your RIP is running System 6. A Config page will confirm this under the System Info heading. You can download the CUPS filter update from EFI via this link.
Regarding the use of LPD, the Fiery's often require a queue name of print (and it must be entered in lower case). If you do not enter the queue name correctly then you can get the busy errors you mention in your post.
If you were using AppleTalk previously, you would have seen the print queue advertised and probably the direct and hold queues also. As for IPP, I never had much success with using this as a protocol. Personally I prefer HP Jetdirect-Socket (which connects to RAW Port 9100 on the Fiery). This is typically what Windows queues will default to and can be a more stable connection than LPD.
To end this reply, I suggest you go easy on Apple support. These folks aren't trained on network printer setups or issues but then they should not have to be. Toshiba should be providing you with your support and if they cannot then take it up with their management. It is not good enough to shrug shoulders and cry poor. If they cannot help, then tell them you are taking your business elsewhere. The wheel that squeaks always gets the best support...
One last thing. Get your head out of the past and stop crying for AppleTalk. It always amuses me that people want the latest operating system but then want support for outdated protocols and products. AppleTalk was rubbish on large networks. Yes it allowed you to see the printer on the network but it never happily co-existed in an IP-based network and was often the cause of lost connections.
    We can't fear change....
